animpressiveandexcitingprogrammeofeventswhichincludesart,dance,music,film,theatre,literatureandhistory.ThisprogrammeofeventsisbroughttoyoubythestaffoftheCityCouncil’sArtsOffice,ParksDepartment,CommunityDepartment,SportsandRecreationDepartment,DublinCityPublicLibraries,DublinCityGalleryTheHughLaneandtheMansionHouseinconjunctionwithactivemembersofourcommunitiesthroughoutourcity.

ThereisagreatrangeofeventshappeningrightacrossthecityduringMay.In2015theMansionHousecelebrates300yearsastheofficialresidenceoftheLordMayor.TocelebrateweareholdingtwoBealtaineevents.WeareworkingwithDublinCityPublicLibrarieswhoarebringingtheirMemoryBustotheforecourt.WewantyoutoshareyourmemoriesoftheMansionHouseovertheyearswithusandbringphotos,memorabiliaandmemoriesforrecordingon23rdand27thMay.TheHousewillalsobeopenforpeopletowalkthroughandhavealookatthepublicrooms.WealsowelcometheRialtoF2StitchandBitchgroupwhowillbeknittingaDublincityscapeintheMansionHouseon19thand20thMay.ElsewherethereisacommunitygardeningprojectinFlanagan’sFieldswhereartistChristineMackeyexploresourrelationshipwiththelandandit’ssoil,asketchingtourintheHughLaneGalleryandcraftworkshopsinourcitieslibraries.Cometoourcontemporaryartgallery,TheLABon16thMayinFoleyStreettoparticipateinNationalDrawingDay.ThereisaseriesofeventsformusicenthusiastsintheCentralLibrary,ILACCentreduringMayincludingamusictherapyworkshopandalunchtimeconcertbyTheBlueHeavenBarbershopChorus.

OneofthehighlightsofBealtaineistheFEASTONDANCE,broughttoyouinpartnershipwithCoisCéimBroadreach.ParticipateinmanyofthedanceeventsthroughoutthecityandenjoythefinalperformancesinCityHallon28thMay.Comeoutanddancetosomegreatmusic,includingrenownedfolk-singerJohnSpillane,andshowhowolderpeoplecelebrateinDublinthisBealtaine.Evenifyoudon’tparticipatedirectly,comeoutandsupportasaspectatormanyofthelivelyandengagingeventsofBealtaine2015inDublinCity.

Thereweremanycreativewomen–socalledprivileged,mostlyProtestantwomenintheperiod1860sto1950s–whohavebeenbarelyresearchedorwrittenabout.EllaYoungwasoneofthem-mystic,folkloristandpoet.

ItwasanexcitinganddangeroustimetobelivingduringElla’stimein

Dublin(1890-1925)whenIrelandwasfightingforherindependence.Sheimmersedherselfinidealisticandmysticaldreamsamongsttheliteraryandpoliticalcirclesofhercontempories,W.B.Yeats,GeorgeMooreandJ.M.Synge.She,however,riskedherownfreedomdaringlyhidinggunsforthefreedomfighters,the boys asshecalledthem,inatticsandsecretroomsofthehousesinwhichshelived.

SheemigratedtotheUnitedStatesin1925andwentontohaveadramaticallydifferentlifeinCaliforniawhichlastedover30yearsuntilherdeath.ShelecturedattheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley,andherknowledgeandenthusiasmforCelticmythologywonherawideaudienceamongwritersandartistsinCalifornia.

Hester Stanhope,grievingforherlostlovewhowaskilledatCorunnain1809,shetravelledtoLebanon.Whenshipwrecked,andhavingtobuyanewsetofclothes,shecastasideherfemaleattireanddressedasanArabsheikhfortherestofherlife,completewithturbananddagger.

Andthegreatestofthemall,Lady Jane Digby–ascandalouswomanifevertherewasone–foundtrueloveinMedjuel,anunbearablyhandsomeandchivalroussheikhoftheSyriandesert.“AletterfromMedjuel”,shebreathed,“andthathewascominginafewhours..Inearlyfainted.”

EatyourheartoutMillsandBoon,thesethreewomenfoundthemselves,inreallife,drawntothemysteryofthehotdesertsoftheMiddleEast.
