• Extreme durability and temperature tolerance

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of the Emirate of Dubai is developing a highly advanced transport system in line with Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision for making Dubai a smart city.

Dubai is one of the world’s fastest developing cities and with population growth among the highest in the world, improving the performance of the road network is an important priority for the RTA. To meet its objectives, the RTA commenced a large-scale development of the Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) infrastructure on roads, freeways and expressways in Dubai.

The project involves the extension of fibre to each location to enhance traffic control operations; but the RTA faced the challenge of managing the fibre rollout without causing a disruption to the traffic flow as the closure of major intersections for weeks, or months, would have a catastrophic impact on traffic congestion.

After carefully reviewing and testing a selection of wireless Machine-to-Machine (M2M) products, the NetComm Wireless 3G WiFi M2M Router with Voice (NTC-40WV) was chosen for its unmatched durability, signal strength and continuity in extreme conditions.

The NTC-40WV is to be installed in cabinets on the sidewalk at each location to transmit information, such as the number of cars that pass over the sensor, to the Traffic Management Centre so traffic light durations can be set according to traffic requirements in real time.

The first phase of the deployment is to integrate the NTC-40WV with the control box to establish communication over 3G. The second phase is to set unique commands for the traffic lights so the light will immediately change colour when a predetermined number of cars reach the intersection. This is achieved using the embedded Open Linux operating system and Software Development Kit (SDK) to enable an automatic response to a programmed event.

The NTC-40WV supports the secure collection and analysis of traffic data from remote unmanned locations to ensure seamless traffic light functionality across the Emirate of Dubai. The device combines M2M data and voice capabilities and features: Ethernet connectivity; built-in 802.11n WiFi delivering speeds of up to 21Mbps and advanced remote management (TR-069/SMS/SNMP).

The feature packed NTC-40WV also combines powerful processors; flexible power options; GPS support; Mimo antenna technology; remote diagnostics; advanced wireless security and is built to withstand harsh environmental conditions and extreme temperatures to ensure optimal traffic conditions for the people of Dubai.

About RTA

Since Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in today’s world, making the provision of high quality infrastructure facilities absolutely imperative, and since providing an advanced transport network for the people of Dubai has been high on the government’s agenda, which is evident from its initiatives to enhance the public transport facilities and improve roads across the emirate to make travel safer and smoother, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) was formed by the decree number 17 for the year 2005.

RTA is responsible for planning and providing the requirements of transport, roads & traffic in the Emirate of Dubai, and between Dubai and other Emirates of the UAE, neighbouring countries in order to provide an effective & an integrated transport system capable of achieving Dubai’s vision & serving the vital interests of the Emirate.

“The RTA required a reliable wireless solution that would keep the traffic lights connected while also enabling the automatic transfer of data from the traffic lights to the Dubai Traffic Management Centre in the absence of a fixed line connection”
