ThisarticleisastepbystepguideonhowtodualbootWindows7andKaliLinuxonasingleharddiskdrive (HDD).KaliLinuxiswhatusedtobeBackTrackLinux,adistributiondesignedforpenetrationtestingandsecurityprofessionals.Itshipswithabout300penetrationtestingandhackingapplicationsinstalled.

WhileBackTrackisbasedonUbuntu,KaliLinuxisbasedonDebian,andusesthecompleteDebianInstaller.Asaresult,theinstallationprocessisdifferentfromthatofBackTrack,whichusesUbuntusgraphicalinstallationprogram.

TheobjectivehereistoshowhowtoinstallitonanHDDalongsideanexistinginstallationofWindows7,withtheWindows7bootmanager asthemasterbootloader,sothatattheend,whenthecomputeris(re)booted,youwillbepresentedwithabootmenuthatlooksjustliketheoneshownbelow.SelectingWindows7bootsthesystemintoWindows7andchoosingKaliLinuxwill,bydefault,takeyoutotheKaliLinuxbootmenu,whichisthesamethingastheGRUB2menu,theversionofGRUBusedbyKaliLinux.

TobypassKaliLinuxsbootmenu,simplyeditthefilenamed/etc/default/grubandchangeGRUB_TIMEOUT=5toGRUB_TIMEOUT=0.Thenruntheupdategrubcommand.



Nowthatweknowwhattodo,andwhattheresultwillbe,letsgetitdone.Ifyouhavenotdonesoalready,downloadaninstallationimageofKaliLinuxfromhere.

1.ShrinktheWindows7CDrive:MytestsystemhasanexistinginstallationofWindows7ona500GBHDD,withjusttwoprimarypartitions.ThisishowtheyappearinWindows7spartitionmanager .ThetaskhereistoshrinktheCdrivetocreateroomforinstallingKaliLinux.Todothat,rightclickontheCdriveandselectShrinkVolume.

Note:IfyouintendtoinstallWindows7afresh,thisprocesswillbealoteasierifyousetasidethefreespacethatwillbeusedforKaliLinuxduringtheinstallationofWindows7.

IfyouhaveenoughfreespaceontheCdrive,thesystemwillsuggesta5050splitofthefreespace.Whichisjustgoodenoughforthistestinstallation.Shrink.



Aftertheoperationhascompleted,youshouldseethenewlyreclaimedspacenexttotheCdrive.Youmayexitthepartitionmanagerandrebootthecomputer.BesuretohavetheinstallationdiscofKaliLinuxintheopticaldrivebeforerebooting.

2.InstallKaliLinux:ThebestoptiontoselectonKaliLinuxsbootmenuisGraphicalInstall.Itgivesyouapointandclickinstallationprocess.Installworksjustaswell,buttheinterfaceisncursesbased.

ForinstallingKaliLinux,thefollowingpartitionswillbecreated:/boot,/,/home,andSwap.Inthatorder.The/homepartitionisoptional.Atthediskpartitioningmethodsstepoftheinstallationprocess,yougetabunchofoptions.Becausenoneoftheguidedoptionswillcreateaseparate/bootpartition,



creatingthepartitionswillhavetobedonemanually.SoselectManualandclickContinue.

HereyoucanseetheexistingWindows7partitions,bothofwhichareprimarypartitions.Thefreespace,reclaimedfromWindows7inthepreviousstepiswhatwillbeusedforcreatingthepartitionsforKaliLinux.Tostartcreatingthepartitions,selectthefreespaceandclickContinue.

Createanewpartition.Continue.



ThisshowsthetotalamountofdiskspaceavailableforKaliLinux.The/bootpartitionwillbecreatedfirst,soyouneedtospecifytheamountofdiskspaceforit.

Forthistestsystem,Iassigned300MBtoit.Continue.

Becauseyoustillhavetwoprimarypartitionstouse,youcancreatethebootpartitionasaprimaryorlogicalpartition.Eitheroptionwillwork,buttheinstallerpreferscreatingitasaprimarypartition,ifthebootloaderisgoingtobeinstalledinit.Forthistestinstallation,Ichosetocreateitasalogicalpartition.Continue.

Thisstepshowsthedetailsofthebootpartitionyoujustcreated.Theonlythingyouneedtochangehereisthemountpoint.Doubleclickingonitwillopenanotherwindowwhereyoucanspecifythecorrectmountpoint.

Hereswhatitshouldlooklikeafterthemountpointhasbeenspecified.TheotheroptionyoumightwanttochangehereistheBootableflag.

Thereisagoodreasonitshouldbeenabled,butthesystemwillbootevenifitisdisabled.ItjustdependsonyourBIOSversion.Forthistestinstallation,itwasdisabledandthesystemstillworkedperfectly.



Heresthefinaldetailsofthebootpartition.ScrolltoDonesettingupthepartition,thenclickContinue.Notethatthestepsyouusedtocreatethebootpartitionwillberepeatedfortheotherpartitions.

Backtothemaindiskpartitioningwindow,youcanseethebootpartitionyoujustcreated,plustheremainingfreespace.Select,thefreespace,thenclickContinue.
