Delta Upsilon Beacon Lehigh University Chapter | Volume 6, Issue 1 | May 2016 From the Desk of the President Greetings Brothers! With another successful Spring semester wrapped up for Delta Upsilon, it is my pleasure to share with you some of our chapter’s highlights. This semester started with a highly successful formal recruitment period, where we recruited and later initiated 22 new brothers into our chapter. This new class is filled with members eager to learn and lead, and we are excited to see the future impact they have on our chapter. Throughout the semester, we kept up last year’s momentum of effective philanthropy and community service events by continuing our involvement from last year, as well as exploring new options to improve the effect we can have on the communities around us. Furthermore, we placed a greater emphasis upon fostering brotherhood within our chapter. Through brotherhood events and our new weekly brotherhood dinners, many members of our chapter agree that we met our goal. Finally, our chapter continued to establish a strong presence in the university community by fostering members that are involved as leaders in various organizations across campus, as well as supporting other university and Greek organizations with the events they host. We had a packed Spring semester are already planning how we can continue this momentum into the Fall. Sincerely, Tristan Seton ‘19 President Spring, 2016 Initiates and Brothers

Delta Upsilon Beacon Lehigh University Chapter | Volume 6, Issue 1 | May 2016

From the Desk of the President Greetings Brothers!

Throughout the semester, we kept up last year’s momentum of effective philanthropy and community service

events by continuing our involvement from last year, as well as exploring new options to improve the effect we can have on the communities around us.

Furthermore, we placed a greater emphasis upon fostering brotherhood within our chapter. Through

brotherhood events and our new weekly brotherhood dinners, many members of our chapter agree that we met our goal. Finally, our chapter continued to establish a strong presence in the university community by fostering members

that are involved as leaders in various organizations across campus, as well as supporting other university and Greek organizations with the events they host. We had a packed Spring semester are already planning how we can continue this momentum into the Fall.

Sincerely,

Tristan Seton ‘19 President

This newsletter serves to update our DU family on the events and

activities of the current brothers. Thank you for taking the time to read and recall undergraduate memories. We invite you to connect with both current brothers and DU Lehigh alumni on LinkedIn: “Delta Upsilon – Lehigh Chapter”

https://goo.gl/yJTFSA

Please include DU brothers in any recruiting you may be involved with for internships or career opportunities. DU Alumni have also helped undergraduates other with short-term work projects, relocation advice, and general career insight. A list of seniors and their majors is available upon request from President Tristan Seton ’18. Also, please contact us when you plan to visit campus so we can arrange access and give you a hearty welcome and tour of our still beautiful Chapter House. We would love to see you! Lehigh has implemented key card access to all residential buildings on campus, including Delta Upsilon. Please contact Tristan Seton, Chad Paul or myself, James Michal, at the email addresses listed on this page. Chad’s cell phone number is (610) 392-8888. I hope that you have enjoyed this edition of the Delta Upsilon Beacon. As always, thank you so much for all your support!

Delta Upsilon Lehigh Chapter

Dear Delta Upsilon Brothers: I hope you have enjoyed reading about all the good things happening at our DU Chapter at Lehigh. The undergraduate brothers are performing well, having fun, and growing the chapter. This year’s pledge class of 19 men was the largest pledge class on the hill! The accreditation presentation, held last month, went very well, with many of the brothers sharing the presentation “load.” You would have been proud of their performance! One of the keys to their success is the very strong leadership training program offered by DU International. As the brothers have reported, quite a few of them have taken advantage of these opportunities, and that helps them grow and mature into good leaders, good friends, and well-rounded young men. These opportunities would not have been possible without all the alumni support we receive. Thank you! Our 131st annual spring initiation went flawlessly, with 120+ brothers, parents, administrators, and alumni present. It was followed by the first alumni cocktail party and dinner we have been permitted to hold in the chapter house in 30 years! It went very well, administrators were impressed, and, I believe, bodes well for a shift in the future social and alcohol policies at Lehigh that are more “reasonable” while still adhering to Pennsylvania law. I hope you will consider attending our 132nd spring initiation next year!

I have mentioned in the past that we are approaching the 50th Anniversary of our current chapter house. I apologize for the miscalculation of years in my prior letter. I am now being told that the first occupants took possession of the house in the fall of 1968, so we are two years from the 50th.

As a part of the rollup to that celebration, we have decided to conduct a $150,000 capital campaign to spruce things up as well as build financial security for the Chapter. It has been almost 10 years since the last “update,” and the wear and tear is showing. We also want to ensure that, in good times and bad, we have the resources to keep the house in good condition and the chapter financially viable. I’ll be sending you a separate communication with all the details. When you receive it, please give our request ample consideration, especially remembering the richness of your DU experience and the friendships with DU brothers you are close to, even today.

Finally, an update on our Alumni Corporation President, Mark Parseghian ’49. As I have reported, Mark had a series of mini-strokes in mid-2015 and spent weeks in St. Luke’s Hospital and months in rehab at Moravian Village in Bethlehem. Mark is at home now, and gets around reasonably well, albeit slowly. He was able to join us for our Spring Initiation, cocktails, and dinner, which was terrific. I’m sure he’d love to hear from you: 20 South Main Street, Nazareth, PA 18064 610-759-0340.

Yours in DU,

Chad Paul ‘76
