In July, our City residents and visitors experienced the launch of the “Corpus Christi First” initia-tive. is progressive project is a collaboration between the City of Corpus Christi, the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Downtown Manage-ment District, the Downtown Marina, and the Regional Trans-portation Authority, in an e ort to promote the revitalization of Downtown and to increase tour-ist tra c in Corpus Christi. It is an event-based program, sched-uled to take place during the rst weekend of every month. e anchor events for the weekend activities are: Friday - the Downtown ArtWalk,Saturday - Marina Market Days, Sunday - Harbor Bridge

BridgeWalk.

ese events encompass an incredible range of positivity, pro-moting community involvement and inclusion necessary for con-tinued successful growth. As the initiative gains momentum it is anticipated that other events will be o cially “adopted” to become part of “Corpus Christi First” and at the time of writing, in time for the August 5th ArtWalk, docent guided tours of City owned Pub-lic Art in the Downtown area will be piloted on ArtWalk mornings in August, September and Octo-ber. e 9:30 tour will be dedicat-ed to schools but the 11am tour will be open to the public and is free of charge. Starting point is La

Retama park and transport is pro-vided by the DMD Dtown tram. Also negotiations are underway to increase the Sunday tness op-tions to include a family friendly bicycle ride and some kind of running event.

ArtWalk, the veteran event of the DMD, takes place on the rst Friday a ernoon of every month from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. It origi-nally started as a small, ve venue, art event and has evolved into the current 68 venue “Community Event” designed to demonstrate to residents and visitors alike that the Corpus Christi Downtown, whilst having much redevelop-ment still to come, is a safe and vibrant place to visit. Currently the Downtown businesses active-ly participating in the event o er music, art, and activities that give folks many reasons to revisit ev-ery month. e event grows each month, in venues and in partici-pants. Since February, attendance has risen from the 300 mark to an estimated 2700 participants at the July ArtWalk. e Art Museum of South Texas, e Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, and the Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures (all of which of-fer free entry to ArtWalkers on ArtWalk night) have all recently joined the ever increasing list of venues. Two new businesses on William Street ( reads and Ur-ban Fare Cafe) held their Grand Openings during the July Art-Walk, and have also added them-selves to the growing list of Art-

NEW BUSINESS DOWNTOWN

ThreadsBY MEGAN BRIEGER

Originally from Portland, Jen-nifer Reid is a young, vibrant girl who has been residing in Aus-tin for the past ve years. A er a few years of brainstorming on her idea for a funky, hip con-signment shop, she’s transform-ing her dream into reality... and she’s bringing reads to Wil-liam street in Downtown Corpus Christi. Here’s what she wants future reads’ lovers to know about herself and her newest con-tribution to this wonderful city.

What made you want to open reads and how long have you had this idea?

“Its been a dream of mine for about 3 years now, my mom owned a shop similar to reads in Portland and between helping her out, being inspired by all the really cool shops in Austin, and being tired of ‘working for the man’ I decided to start saving and really honing in on making my dream of owning my own shop happen!”

What is your interest in fashion?“Well I love seeing people ex-

press themselves through fash-ion. Just wearing something that makes them feel good, ya know. It’s fun just mixing and matching things together to make some-thing fresh and new! And It’s even better when you nd an awesome deal!”

How would you describe your style and how close or di erent is it to the style of the average reads customer?

“Well I guess I’m not the “av-erage gal”. I skateboard, so my

style is a bit di erent from other people. I guess I just wear what-ever makes me feel good. I can get down with the boys but I still love to throw on some heels and a sexy dress and go out for a great night on the town.”

Describe the kind of style of ‘the average reads shopper’?

“To each their own. I want reads to be very versatile and I want anyone to be able to nd something great there!”

Why Downtown Corpus Christi?“I love the openness that the

ocean has to o er and I love Tex-as, so why not return to my roots? A er being gone for ve years, I see that Corpus has so much po-tential to have a awesome Down-town scene... and not just for one night. We have the geography that alone makes this city worth living in. Bringing the business and en-tertainment, etc. that right now, everyone leaves town to go do, is just going to make it that much better.”

Describe your vision of reads?“ reads will be a place where

you can go and nd something that all the stores in the mall don’t have in multiples. You could stumble upon something ‘one of a kind’. Every day there will be something new to nd. We will have  everything- from tennies to heels, rings to sunglasses, t-shirts to dressy tops, day dresses to formals. reads will be a place where you go to search around and have a good time, and dis-cover your new favorite out t :)”

Describe the average reads

shopper?“Anyone who likes a great deal

on name-brand stu !”

What sets reads apart from thri stores?

“I feel that it’s a step above, lets say, Goodwill in that we are only taking things that are in  style, so  you  eliminate  having to si thru a lot of random items. And you get money for your clothes!”

What sets reads apart from other consignment shops?

“ e di erence in reads vs. other resale shops in town is that  reads will be targeting to-wards a  younger generation. It’s more for people in their teens to 30’s, and also we will have a sepa-rate guys department!”

Hours of operation?“7 days a week 12 pm- 8 pm.”

When will you start opening to take clothes?

“We  will start taking clothes June 6th! Times will be posted on Facebook each Monday for the week. Basically, everyone who brings in clothes has their own account and when their item(s)

sell they get 40% cash or they can choose to use it as store credit and receive 50%. Every 15th of the month, a report for that month will be made where we’ll calcu-late how much you sold We’ll reach out to you, and then you can come pick up your money or store credit.”

 Plans for grand opening/Art-Walk plans?

“ reads will open July 1st in collaboration with ArtWalk. I plan on having a ribbon cutting ceremony, bands playing, profes-sional Hoola-hooping going on, jewelry and art for sale, etc. It’s gonna be a real fun day you won’t want to miss!”

What’s your goal for the shop?“Aside from being everyone’s

new favorite place to nd great deals on great clothes, reads will host a lot of really cool events in the future! Stay posted online face-book.com/txthreads  or  ccthreads.blogspot.com”

How will reads help improve and better Corpus Christi?

“Hopefully I can inspire oth-ers to move or start a business

Downtown. It’s a nice getaway from the inner city shu¬ e, just to walk around Downtown and visit shops and restaurants. Take a bike ride down Ocean, stop by Cole Park, or walk the pier. It’s a great city and this whole “there’s nothing to do here” attitude and perspective that a lot of people have, it just isn’t true. By getting people to come Downtown, and inspiring others to help improve our city, I hope more people will learn to start fully enjoying our city. We’re here so we might as well make the best of it!”

Anything else you want your fu-ture reads shoppers to know?

“You never know what you’re going to nd, so come in and enjoy the experience of nding something unique and new. Well new to you anyways!

Also, If you choose to donate the items we cannot take they will be going to various women’s shel-ters and teenage housing shelters in town.”

First Friday ARTWALKSept. 2 • 5:30 to 9:00 pm

BY MICHELLE SMYTHE

ere’s a fantastic event hap-pening right here in our own back-yard and it’s breathing new life into Downtown Corpus Christi. ArtWalk is not to be missed! Held on the First Friday of every month with estimated attendance at 2700, ArtWalk continues to highlight the exceptional talent of our local artists and musicians.

ArtWalk has grown to include more than 65 venues opening their doors for the event. Down-town businesses feature art, mu-sic, refreshments, specials and discounts. e event begins and ends in La Retama Park where visitors will nd artists and food vendors, live music, Kid’s Art Corner and an all around festive atmosphere. La Retama Park is located at the triangle between Mesquite, Peoples and Schatzel Streets. Live music in September will be provided by Get O the Lawn bluegrass band.

Art Museum of South Texas, Asian Cultures Museum and Mu-seum of Science and History are now participating in ArtWalk. To get there, just catch the ArtWalk Express, a bus graciously pro-vided by e Regional Transpor-tation Authority that transports ArtWalkers to the far-reaching

venues of ArtWalk, like the muse-ums, Yachting Center, Art Center of Corpus Christi and Tango Tea Room.

e Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures is featuring a new mixed media artwork by local artist Antonio “Tony” Armadil-lo. e work combines Japanese sentiments towards nature with Armadillo’s serene yet powerful interpretation of the most recent tragic occurrences in Japan. Two master wood-block print artists, Katsushika Hokusai and Ando Hiroshige are re° ected in Arma-dillo’s representation of the recent tragedy of March 11, 2011. e work is on display August 5 – September 2, 2011.

e Art Museum of South Texas has two wonderful exhibits on display. Beyond Shared Lan-guage: Contemporary Art and the Latin American Experience  in-cludes works by 14 artists of Latin American-descent (from North, Central and South America). e exhibition explores issues relat-ing to cultural identity, ethnic-ity, religion and both the fragility and ° uidity of their visual lan-guage.  Also on view is Dorothy Hood:  Exploring Scale. Dorothy Hood, born and raised in Bryan, Texas, lived in Houston for much

of her life. is exhibition pres-ents a look at Hood’s large-scale paintings that were in° uenced by the wide-open Texas skies and NASA’s space exploration pro-gram. Entrance to the Art Mu-seum of South Texas on ArtWalk night is free.

In Water St. Market, the Tree-house Art Collective LLC is celebrating their One Year An-niversary with featured art work by all six core members:  Sherry Bercaw, Pat Conway, Ellen Feh-renkamp, Gloria Hunter, Melinda Ramos and Kathy Wagner. is is a beautiful shop with some truly original treasures.

e Art Center of Corpus Christi opens new exhibitions by John Williams, Maricela Sanchez and Cli Welty, as well as works by the painting students of Lynn Dickey and Vicki Marshall.

At K Space Contemporary, don’t’ miss the Shockingly Spec-tacular Super September Salon, a giant ° oor-to-ceiling art sale. K Space is turning its walls over to artists from all over the region and letting them cram as much art into the space as possible. ere will be some excellent deals on artwork here!

Peace of Mind is hosting two special guests during the Septem-ber ArtWalk. Rebecca DeLeon will o er unique jewelry, mysti-cal oils, crystals and incense, and Rebecca Flores will provide An-

gel Card readings and Ask Your Guide card readings. Peace of Mind will also be doing massage in La Retama Park.

While traveling about Down-town, be sure to pick up ra¬ e tickets at each ArtWalk location. Bring the tickets back to La Re-tama Park by 8:45 and put them in the ra¬ e drum for a chance to win some great prizes. e draw-ing will be held at 9 pm. Prizes in-clude gi certi cates, door prizes, and the grand prize – an original work of art by a local artist. Art-Walkers must be present to win.

e DTown Tram continues to transport ArtWalkers to centrally located venues in the heart of Downtown with HOBO aboard to entertain the crowds playing their special blend of “Honkadelica”. Both the RTA ArtWalk Express and the DTown Tram connect at La Retama Park every 30 minutes.

For ArtWalk maps and general info, look for ArtWalk Ambassa-dors wearing bright orange shirts. Some are on Segways (thanks to SegCity), and some are stationed at key locations around Down-

town. ArtWalk maps are also available on the ArtWalk Tram, at the DMD booth in La Retama Park, the Art Center, K Space and Water Street Center. Free parking is available and all venues are near favorite Corpus Christi eateries. Admission is FREE.

Walk venues. Additionally, local artists set up booths in La Retama Park and all over Downtown art-ists and musicians can be found sharing their creations with fel-low community members and visitors to the ArtWalk.

Marina Market Days con-tinues the weekend’s events, and is held on the Lawrence Street T-head from 9am until 4pm Sat-

urday. Like ArtWalk, the event is free to the public, and is lo-cated within walking distance of most Downtown hotels, making it highly accessible and notice-able to visitors. e Dtown Tram operates between Shoreline and the Lawrence Street T-head to provide a shuttle service for Mar-ket Days visitors who cannot get parked on the T-Head. e local community, boaters and visitors can enjoy another day of arts,

cra s, and food at the new water-front festival. An estimated 5,000 people attended the rst Marina Market Days on July 3rd and Au-gust Market Days will have even more vendors than last time. At the time of writing over 66 ven-dors have registered and it looks like August will be a similar suc-cess. e September Marina Mar-ket Days will be held Saturday September 3rd.

Bridgewalk has been es-tablished as the Sunday anchor event, chosen to start a “ tness Sunday” theme, it is hoped to add cycling, running, and possibly other physical activity events to the day in order to provide a wide spectrum of activities from which to choose. A er all walking over a high bridge may not appeal to everyone!

Walking the bridge, whilst it has undoubtedly been done be-fore, started in earnest on January 1st 2010 when a small group of friends and family realized a long-time ambition to walk over the Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge. Only about a dozen people took

part that day and the event was covered by Channel 3 and Chan-nel 6. It turned into a monthly walking “club” which continued until April 2010 at which time the pedestrian walkways were closed to the public pending comple-tion of the bridge maintenance contract. TxDot agreed to open the walkways for limited special events and so we requested July 3rd to launch “Corpus Christi First” and January 1st, 2012 to help folks keep their New Year resolutions to stay t. e July event, led by Mayor Joe Adame, attracted 200 walkers, 2 kids in strollers, and 4 dogs to complete the 2.5 mile walk. It was so suc-cessful that the Mayor suggested, to maintain momentum, we relo-cate the walk to Shoreline for the months of August to December, and February and March 2012 and so the “BridgeWalk without a bridge” was born.

Come join us at 9am on Sep-tember 4th, October 2nd, No-vember 6th, and December 4th, weather permitting, to walk from the water park at Resaca, along Shoreline to Lawrence Street, around the T-Head and back. is is a 2.6 mile walk roughly equivalent to the distance covered on the bridge.

On July 28th, 2011, House of Rock celebrated it’s sixth year in Downtown Corpus Christi. Af-ter six years of hosting countless musicians, artists, comedians, Burlesque girls, zombies, etc., the phrase “If these walls could talk” can’t be overused around there. ough the venue has had its share of both ups and downs, an equal mixture of contributing talents, by Casey Lain (managing partner of House of Rock) and by the community surrounding him, are the ultimate ingredients that have made celebrating 6 years possible. Everything from the in-terior design to the many events hosted at House of Rock depend on (and wouldn’t be possible without) a love for sharing talents and ideas with one another.

A few of September’s upcom-ing events include: Friday, September 2nd and Satur-

day, September 3rd: e Art of Blue festival

Friday, September 9th: Periphery, e Human Abstract, Textures, e Contortionists, and Buried Under Texas.

A er a short House of Rock History lesson with Casey, we’ve got a few fun facts that you may or may not know about House of Rock.

Lets Talk House of RockHouse of Rock en:-Now a 3-room venue, House

of Rock was originally just two rooms: e smaller, front bar, and a big room in the back (now the middle bar and the Venue).

- e front bar has stayed its original size, but its ° oor-plan has

changed quite a bit. e original front bar had 2 pool tables in it, no video games, foosball table, or internet jukebox. e actual bar was located where our pool table now sits, and a hallway led to the bathrooms next to it.

- e rest of the building was one large room, painted com-pletely black. e stage in what is now the middle bar used to have a pool table on it, and the sound booth was at the back of the room.

-Originally, the only form of art-work/decorations in the building were a few hand-painted designs of House of Rock initials on some of the walls, painted by one of the founding partners and his niece. ese designs remain today and are the oldest art in the building.

House of Rock Now:Almost 3 years ago, major

renovations took place at House of Rock. A large garage door was installed, and the middle bar was created, allowing House of Rock to become a three-room venue.

- Light Fixtures throughout the building are made out of gui-tars and drums that were donated by customers in exchange for free concert tickets.

-House of Rock’s walls are now covered with art and pictures cre-ated by local artists.

- e rst person to hang their art in House of Rock was a cab driver named Lee who used to regularly park his cab out front and come inside and draw. He do-nated some of his drawings to be

hung up as decorations, and from then on the art never stopped coming in. Some of its been do-nated, some is on loan, and some sold to us. Every form of art in the building has a story behind it that relates to House of Rock.

-Fred Cook and his wife Melis-sa designed all of our 6 year An-niversary Posters except the rst one. at one was designed by a Corpus Christi native named Jack Bar eld who now lives in Austin.

-Fred Cook also designed the rooster (House of Rock’s logo).

BY LIMELIGHT PRODUCTIONS“Why downtown Corpus

Christi?” at’s what many people may have thought when Derrick Frazier opened the doors of this men’s retail store located on the corner of Peoples Street and Mes-quite. With a position in the fam-ily business rooting his feet in the CC sands, Derrick and his wife Ryan decided that they wanted to contribute to the movement hap-pening amongst young entrepre-neurs in the downtown area. So, he decided to live out his passion starting right here, right now.

When it comes to Co-Op Sup-ply, Derrick’s objective is to create a specialty retail store that o ers a highly-di erentiated collection of apparel, accessories and home goods. He hopes for Co-Op’s “supply” to become the keystone products worn and endorsed by men, not only of the Coastal Bend, but across the nation as well. And, with a sleek website, an online shopping store and the implementation of the Co-Op

Box (an exclusive membership that gets you hand-selected out- ts shipped to your door), that won’t be too di cult of a feat. However, ultimately, Co-Op is to become something more...a life-style movement for the common man, known by the savvy and sophisticated but at home and comfortable for those who maybe

are not. You may see or hear the phrase “a more meaningful to-morrow” around Co-Op’s neck of the woods, and that’s what this is about for Derrick...out tting each man with the supplies that will help him discover his place, in his culture, tomorrow and every day that follows.

So, what does “Co-Op” even mean and what does it have to do with clothes? e name is a con-versation piece in and of itself. In the early phases of the store’s de-velopment, Derrick decided that he wanted to absorb the creativity and in° uence of other key men-tors. Although the store carries his unique outlook on fashion, style and culture, this was going to become a “cooperative” e ort for direction and innovation. Fusing this idea with the ultimate goal of supplying every man with his most basic needs, Derrick landed on “Co-Op Supply.”

When he’s not working at his 8-5, Derrick can be found in the store running the day-to-day op-

erations. Because a er all, shar-ing this venture with each an ev-ery customer is as impor-tant as the venture itself. So, next time you’re downtown dining, touring or entertaining, drop by and ex-perience Co-Op Supply anytime Tuesday through Saturday, 12-7pm.
