A L AT E R V E R S I O N Charles and Ray Eames created the DSW (Dining height, Side chair seat shell with Wood base) as a later version of the shell chair designs they created for MoMA’s 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design.

M O R E G E N T L E A new look combined with classic Eames style. The Dowel Leg Side Chair brings a softer, warmer feel to the geometric base of the molded plastic side chair.

SUSTAINAB LE Today’s chairs are true to the originals, with updated, eco-friendly materials. Their enduring forms and quality construction make them comfortable, durable performers.

MATE RIAL S Colored seat made of polypropylen, base made of painted, and stained maple, with horizontal cross beams made of basic dark round bar, without cushion.

NEW TECHNIQUES In the 1940s, Charles and Ray Eames were lookingforward while other American designers were content to stay put.New materials, new techniques,new shapes—these were what interested the Eameses.

ORGANIC SHAPES The designers were focused on the new plastics becausethis exciting material held the promise of being able to do more with less.They realized that plastic could be molded into organic shapes that would conform to the shape of the body.

EXPERIMENTS The Eameses adapted molding techniques developed during World War II to produce the shells.They also perfected another techniquewith which they had been experimenting—creating a bent, welded wire base.

Charles and Ray achieved their monumental success by approaching each project the same way:

Does it interest and intrigue us?

Can we make it better?

Will we have “serious fun” doing it?

They loved their work, which was a combination of art and science, design and architecture, processand product, style and function.
