    INTRODUCTION

The ma terial present ed in this module is int ended to provide you with a n u nderst an ding of thefundam enta ls of gas a nd electric dryer ser vicing.

Major a ppliances have become more sophisticated, tak ing th em out of the screwdriver an d plierscategory. Their electrical circuits include several different types of automatic controls, switches, hea ter s, valves, etc.. Semicond uctors, solid-stat e contr ols, and other component s usu ally associat edwith r adio and t elevision electr onic circuits ar e being engineered into aut omatic washers, dr yers,

dishwash ers, refrigerat ors and microwave ovens.

The appliance technician is emerging into a professional status of his own. He must preparehimself now to be able to perform his dut ies today as well as to reta in his pr ofessiona lism in th efuture.

No longer is on-the-job tr ain ing sufficient to prepa re t echnicians for t he complicated pr ocedur esrequired for t odays sophisticated applian ces. This tr aining can best be obtained th rough organizedclassroom study and application. However, much of the knowledge necessary to service todaysappliances can be obtained thr ough study cour ses. Completion of th is an d other cour ses will provideyou with sufficient understanding of appliances and their operation to enable you to do minorservice. It will also serve as a valu able stepping stone t o more a dvanced stu dy and on-th e-job tra iningto impr ove your s ervicing sk ills.

    LINT SCREEN

The lint screen is locat ed in th e right r ear of the top,un der t he lint screen cover, and is used to catch lintas th e air leaves the dryer drum.

Failure to push the screen all the way down couldcause lint to pass under the bottom of the screen. This could cause lint to build up in your exhaustsystem, causing a possible fire ha zard.

FRONT BEARING an d S EAL

The bearin g and sea l is locat ed on the inside flan geof th e front cabinet pan el and is used to support t hedrum a nd mak e a seal between the front dru m andpan el openings.

When r eplacing this sea l, make su re t he folded edgeof th e seal is facing away from the front cabinet pan eland the two holes in the bearing fit over the tworubber plastic clips.

Reduced air pressure in the drum during operationdra ws the sea ls in and effectively seals the dr um ends.

The two seals, one at th e back and one at t he front ,are the points most su sceptible to leaking. If eith erdoes n ot seal effectively while th e dru m is rotat ing, there would not be enough air passing through theheat er box.

If air is allowed to leak in through any point otherthan the heat source, drying efficiency is greatingaffected. Not only is the lack of heated air a factor, but i t must also be remembered that the heater isgenerating a predetermined amount of heat. If notenough air is passing t o car ry off the heat as fast a si t i s being produced, the excess ive temperaturebu i ld ing up in the hea t duc t w i l l open a h igh -temperature-limiting safety thermostat switch andshu t off the heat source.

    DOOR SEAL

This part is located on the rear door panel and isused to form a t ight seal between th e door a nd frontcabinet pan el when t he door is closed.

When replacing this seal place a bead of siliconeru bber adhesive/sealan t ar ound the groove in the reardoor pa nel. Place the door sea l with th e round sidein th e groove in the r ear door panel.

    DOOR HINGE

There a re different types of door h inges tha t couldha ve been used on dryers.

These hinges ar e used to support t he door.

    DOOR STRIKE / DOOR CATCH

These two parts fit together and hold the door in aclosed position.

Models were built with either the cat ch or st rike onthe front cabinet pan el and the mat ing part on therea r of th e door.

    LEVELING FEE T

These plastic or m etal feet ar e screwed into the frontan d rear corn ers of the dr yer.

    DRIVE MOTOR P ULLEY

The pulley is located on the end of the drive motorand is used with t he drive belt in order to turn thedrum.

    IDLER P ULLEY

This part is located below th e drum an d in line withth e drive motor pu lley.

The function of this part is to supply tension t o thedrive belt.

    DRIVE BELT

The drive belt fits aroun d the dr um , under t he idlerpulley, an d a round th e motor pu lley. The m otor pu lleymoves the belt which turns the drum, causing theclothes to tumble. The idler pulley mainta ins dru mbelt tension.

NOTE: It is recommended that anytime the front

cabinet panel is removed, the drive belt be checkedfor frayed spots or wea r, and replaced.

    V-belts an d pu lleys ha ve been chan ged several timess i n c e t h e y w e r e i n t r o d u c e d . T h e b e l t m u s t b ecompatible with the correct pulley for proper rpm.There are also belts and pulleys with five grooves.However, a 4-rib belt can be u sed on a 5-rib pulley.

Belt Vees must fit evenly into the grooves on themotor pulley. If the Vees are out of the grooves,higher-than-normal drum speeds will be attaind, causing the c lo thes to c l ing to the drum s ides ,resul t ing in prolonged drying t ime or excess ivewrin king of cloth ing.

For proper tumbling of garments, all dryer drumsshould revolve at 48 rpm s or 55 r pms if it is a compa ctdryer. Always check t he ser vice par ts list to be sur etha t you ha ve the corr ect belt for t he model you arerepairing. An incorrect drum drive belt or one notfitt ing in th e pulley grooves can cause very h igh dru mspeeds.

To inst all the drum belt, begin by removing t he dr yerfront pa nel. Then place th e belt over th e drum in thedriving position, an d insta ll it u nder the idler pulleyand over the motor pulley.

When a ssembling the belt on th e motor pu lley, firstform a sm all loop, then slide the drive belt u nder theidler pu lley. Push the idler a ssembly to th e right, an dat th e same t ime place the loop of the belt over theend of the m otor pulley.

    LINT CHUTE

The lint chute is locat ed in th e right r ear corn er. Thelint screen is housed in this par t.

Air pa sses thr ough the screen an d chute before it isexhaust ed to th e out side.

    BLOWER HOUSING

The blower housing is located in t he ba ck of the dr yer.

The blower wheel and th ermostat s are h oused in th ispar t .

    BLOWER WHEE L

The blower wheel pulls the air out of th e drum an dpushes i t out the exhaust du ct.

    HEATER BOX

The heater box houses the heat element on electricdryers and carries the heat from the gas burner toth e drum on gas models.

This heat is pulled into the dru m ar ea by the blowerwheel.

    MANIF OLD COVER

This part is locat ed behind the bulkh ead an d in frontof the h eater box.

    DRUM

The dru m is the large, round cont ainer m ounted forrotation within the cabinet. Wet clothing is placed

within th e drum , to be heated an d tum bled dry.

Baffles with in th e dru m lift a nd t umble th e clothin gduring drum rotation.

    DRUM BAFFLE

The dru m baffle is at tached to the inside of the dr um,and is used to tumble the clothes when the drumturns .

    BEARING RING

The bearing ring snaps into place within the roundopening in th e front of the dr yer drum . This bearingring rides on the outer surface of the bearing andseal fastened t o the outside of the flange formed inthe center of th e front cabinet pa nel.

To insure the minimum of air leakage and proper

drum alignment when r eplacing the bear ing ring, thebearing and seal should be chan ged at the sam e time.

    REAR DRUM SEAL

The rea r dr um seal is used to keep cool air from beingdrawn into the drum area and the heated air fromescaping.

It is cemented to the rear of the drum and rides onan em bossed area of th e bulkhead.

Reduced air pressure in the drum during operationdra ws the sea ls in and effectively seals the dru m ends.

The two seals, one at th e back and one at the front, are the point s most su sceptible to leaking. If eitherdoes n ot seal effectively while th e dru m is rotat ing. There would not be enough air passing through theheat er box.

If air is allowed to leak in through any point otherthan the heat source, drying efficiency is greatlyaffected. Not only is the lack of heated air a factor,

but i t must also be remembered that the heater isgenerating a predetermined amount of heat.
