    Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht was an influential German Dramatist of the 20th century. & commonly

    know as Bertolt Brecht.

    MAIN CHARTERS

    Andreas Kragler the poor proletarian. Annas lover who missing WWI solder.

    Anna Balicke the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Balicke, who engage MurkeKarl Balicke & Emily Balicke who convince Anna to marry a wealthy war-materials

    manufacturer, Murk.

    SETTINGS

    Munich, after WWI

    Newspaper building they are re-united to the sound a white wild screaming.

    PLOT

    The story revolved around Anna Balicke, whose lover Andreas has left to fight in WWI. Annas

    parents try to believe her that he is dead and that she should forget him.Annas agrees to this arrangement eventually, just as Andreas returns. Believing that the poor proletarian

    cannot provide the kind of life for Anna that the Bourgeois

    Murk can, Annas parents encourage her to stick to her agreement. Anna leaves Murk & her families stay

    behind in Berlin, and against the backdrop of the Spartacist uprising, searches for Andreas. In the final

    scene theyre consolidated, they walk away together. They play dramatizes many of grievances of the

    Spartacists in their uprising. The soldiers had been stolen before they left for fighting, symbolizes that

    feeling by the working class of having been cheated.

    SYNOPSIS

    Drums in the night is the American Premiere of Finegan Krukemeyers new translation of BertoltBrechts expressionistic and darkly comic anti-war parable. WWI is over Berlin is in Chaos & Anna must

    finally accept that her lover, Kragler who has been missing in action for 4yrs, will never return. Then one

    night, as the moon hangs red in the sky, he appears like a ghost to find her engaged to another man.

    SYMBOLS

    Street Kragler & Anna meet in the morning.

    Bar Andreas quarrels with Annas parent and the Drunken Munk.

    STYLE

    Brechts way is present a clichd view of the romatic peot.

    He writes of himself in the 3rd person also saw the writer wedekind performing his works in a style which

    he had develop in Cabaret.

    PROBLEM

    The soldiers returning from the front felt they had been fighting for nothing.

    ATTEMPT SOLUTION

    The war profiteer attempts to steal the soldiers fianc.

    SHE

    The significance of this poem as a marker of the shift in Brechts work towards a much more

    urban, industrialized flavour.

    CONCLUSION

    Kragler refuses to return to the fithing & they go home together.
