    1. What Is a dk10?

    1. What is a dK10?

Congratu lations on your pu rchase of a dK10 controller. The

dK10 is the newest member of the d rumKAT family of

MIDI controllers. Virtually every leading d rum mer and

percussionist in the wor ld uses one of our d rum KATs.

Our dru mKATs have become an ind ustry standardbecause of their great feel, responsiveness, power, and

    reliability.

With th e dK10, ALTERNATE MODE has distilled the essence

of its previous controllers into the simplest controller to

use in the indu stry. In spite of its simplicity (and

incredible p rice!), the dK10 has the same great feel,

responsiveness, and reliability as the rest of the

drumKAT family. The user interface for selecting Kits

and changing sound selections has been d esigned and

tested with simp licity in mind.

So, what is a dK10? The dK10 is a responsive MIDI

controller consisting of a road wor thy steel enclosure

with 10 incredibly responsive playing pads, a bass tr igger

inpu t, HiHat control inp ut, and two footswitch inpu ts for

making changes to the internal settings. Plug it into any

dru m m achine, sampler, or tone generator and you r

playing will control the soun ds on your d rum machine

with all the expression that you normally play with!

We at ALTERNATE MODE have an ongoing War OnObsolescence. This mean s that the dK10 is an

up grad eable controller. A year from now, when you

decide that you w ant even more control, you can choose

to up grad e to a dru mKAT 3.5 for a reasonable fee. (That

is why your rubber p laying sur face has editing names on

your pad s - those are the fun ctions your controller will

have someday if you up grad e it.) With Alternate Mode,

your investment is never short-term. You have bought

into a family of percussion p rodu cts that will continue to

improve and advance without leaving you behind.

    Enjoy!

    2. Getting Set Up

    2. Getting Set Up.

    Unpacking:

Packed w ith your d K10 you will find th is manual, 1

footswitch, and an AC adap tor. You w ill need to obtain 1

or two MIDI cables, a drum machine or other soun d

source, and headph ones or an am plification system.

    Optional accessories:

For HiHat: A KF1 or VFP1 footswitch or a hatKAT HiH at

    controller ped al.

For Bass drum: A fatKAT (Foot Activated Trigger), a

miniKICK electronic bass drum attachment to acoustic

bass ped als, or the kicKAT bass trigger.

For mou nting: A dkb m ounting bracket to mou nt the dK10

    with standard 7/ 8 mounting clamp s.

    A BCS black rack stand.

For transp ort: A dkc hand y travel case with extra pocket forsticks and p edals.

    Mounting:

Mount you r d K10 on a snare dru m stand, a table or use the

dkb mou nting bracket to conveniently attach the dK10 to

    a BCS dru m rack.

    Connections:

Plug the supp lied footswitch into the Edit Note

footswitch inpu t on the back of the dK10. Plug the AC

adap tor into the power input. Connect a MIDI cable

from the MIDI Out of your d K10 into the MIDI In ofyour dru m m achine or sound source.

If you h ave a hatKAT (use hatKAT CNTRL outpu t) or HiHat

footswitch, connect it to your H iHat inp ut.

If you have a fatKAT, miniKICK, or kicKAT bass trigger,

connect it to your bass drum input.

If you have an other footswitch connect it into the Edit

    Channel input.

If you have a second MIDI cable, connect it from the MIDI In

of your dK10 to the MIDI Out of your d rum m achine.

If your footswitches are not KAT footswitches make sure

they are plugged in prior to turning on your dK10. ThedK10 reads the footswitch inpu ts on power-up and

ad justs for different typ es. (KAT footswitches can be

removed and inserted into other inpu ts after power u p -

other typ es will cause problems if you rem ove them

    while the dK10 is powered u p.)

    3. Selecting Kits & Playing

    3.Selecting Kits and Playing.

To select one of the 10 Kits in th e dK10, simply hold

dow n one of the 10 playing Pads w hen tu rning the d K10

    on! Its that simp le.

You will hear a beep p attern th at verifies the Kit # youhave selected. (For examp le, 2 beeps for Kit 2, 6 beeps

for Kit 6, etc.) Then, go ahead and play!

Kits 1 to 6 contain General MIDI settings that w ill

prod uce the sounds show n on the following p ages for

    most dru m m achines.

When you r d K10 was shipped ou t from ALTERNATE

MODE, the contents of the User Kits were:

Kit 7 is for the Yamaha RY-30 (on Channel 1), Kit 8 is a Blues

Scale for Melodic Sound s, Kit 9 is for the E-muProcussion, and Kit 0 is a General MIDI drumset.

(The User Kits can be re-initialized back to original Factory

settings by simultaneously holding dow n pads 1, 3, and 4

    on power-up.)

To select another Kit, turn your dK10 off. Hold dow n

another Pad w hile turn ing the dK10 on. The beep

pattern w ill verify another Kit selection. Play it.

A second, easier way to change Kit selection requ ires a

second, optional footswitch. If you have 2 footswitches, dep ress both the Edit Note footswitch and the Edit

Chann el footswitch. While they are both depressed hit a

Pad. You will hear the beep pattern verifying the new

    Kit selection.

The dK10 will also respond to Program Changes on

Channel 16 on its MIDI In.

To play on the dK10, just d o what comes naturally! Play!

It will respond dyn amically (soft to loud ) to your p laying

and will follow even your fastest buzz rolls. If you are

playing into a sound source with pitched sound s (horn

stabs, strings, synth soun ds, etc.) you may even h old

dow n on the p laying pads to control the sustain of notes.

Feel free to express you rself, that is wh at ALTERNATE

    MODE controllers are for!

    4. Altering Your Kits

    4444.... Altering Your Kits.

There are three typ es of Kits in you r d K10:

Kits 1 through 6 are Factory Kits that are always present

in your d K10. Kits 7,8,9 are User Kits and can contain

    personalized settings.

Kit 0 is a scratch-pad or temp orary, working Kit location.

When you m ake a change to any of your Kits, the d K10

automatically p uts th ose changes into Kit 0! This

preven ts you from accidentally changing one of your

User Kits 7, 8, or 9. After you are satisfied w ith the

changes you have mad e, you may easily Copy Kit 0 to

any of Kits 7, 8, or 9 as shown in th e next section.

You shou ld avoid keeping your favorite Kit in Kit 0. Since all

editing goes through Kit 0, the contents of Kit 0 get

    changed easily.

Now , to make changes to your Kits (remember, the changes

go to Kit 0), you have two ways of changing which

    sound each pad controls:

    MIDI In AutoTrain:

If your d rum machine has buttons that play all its sound s

(and your d rum machine send s out MIDI information)

you can conn ect a MIDI cable from the MIDI Out of your

drum machine to the MIDI In of your d K10 and veryquickly make changes to the sound assignments in the

    dK10.

Manual Training: IfA doesnt work, you can manu ally

change Note #s and Channels directly on th e dK10 itself

by using the p ads in combination with the footswitches.

So, how do you d ecide wh ich method to use? MIDI In

AutoTrain is easier if your sound source will let you do it.

The following details which instrum ents can respond

prop erly to MIDI In Au toTrain and those that cannot.

To chan ge the sound selections in any of the Kits:

    1. To use this meth od you mu st first connect a MIDI cable

from the MIDI Out of your d rum machine to the MIDI In

    of your dK10.

    2. Depress the Ed it Note footswitch.

    3. While it is depressed, hit the Pad you w ant to change.

    (Do not release the footswitch.)

You w ill hear a tick-tock pattern ind icating you are in

    Note Edit mode.

    4. Now p ush the button on your dru m machine to send the

    sound you want.

    5. If the d k10 receives a valid N ote # (and Chan nel #) it

respond s with a verification beep (a quadrup let). Thats

it, you h ave perm anently changed Kit 0 to be a mod ified

copy of the Kit you came from ! (Now you may release

    the footswitch.)

If the d K10 does not respond , check your connections and

try again. If you cannot get this method to work , you

may still use the Manual Method described on pages 10

No actual Saving of your kits is necessary. Everychange you make is automatically saved (in Kit 0) foryou as you make the changes. To Copy Kit 0 to anyof the 3 User Kits see the next section.

It is OK to select a new pad while you are in the middle ofediting some other pad. The sounds you will then hearwill be the sound you are assigning to the new pad youhave selected to edit.

    5555.... Trigger & Pad Adjustments.

Adjusting the Gain Level of the Trigger Input

As you m ay know, there are many d ifferent kinds and

brand s of bass dr um triggers on the market. You may

find that when p lugging in your favorite bass drumtrigger, the gain outp ut may not be to your liking. Have

    2. Depress the HiHat pedal, also. The tick-tock starts.3. While both the Edit Note footswitch and the HiHat peda l

are depressed, hit the pad you w ant to assign the Closed

    soun d to. Tick-tock continues.

    4. Do not release the Edit Note footswitch or the HiHat

pedal. While both footswitches are still depressed, rehit

the pad you w ant to be a HiHat pad . Do Note training

(see section 4. Altering the User Kits) until you have the

    Closed sound you wan t.

To define the Open HiHat sound:

Perform th e same actions as the other pad s - simply do notdepress the HiHat ped al.

To define the HiHat Chick or Foot sound:

    1. Depress the Edit Note footswitch.

    2. Depress the HiHat ped al. The tick-tock starts. (Do not

    release the Edit Note footswitch.)

    3. Do Note training (see section 4. Altering the User Kits)

the HiHat pedal will play a different sound . Keep

playing the HiHat pedal until you find the Foot sound

    you are looking for.

Stopping a HiHat pad from being a HiHat pad:

    1. Depress the Edit Note footswitch.

    2. Depress the HiHat ped al. The tick-tock starts.3. While both the Edit Note footswitch and the HiHat peda l

are depressed, press the pad you d o not wan t to be a

    HiHat pad . After 2 second s the dK10 will give a

backward s verification beep to ind icate the recognition of

a request to stop this pad from being a HiHat pad .

Release the Edit N ote footswitch, the HiHat p edal, and

    the Pad.

If you connect a hatKATs Control Ou tput in to the d K10s

HiHat inpu t, the dK10 will automatically create a Velocity

sensitive Foot sound for you. (If a hatKAT is plu gged in,the d K10 will also send control inform ation as both

Controller #1 and #4 for sound sources that u se either of

those assignments for expressive HiHat control.)

    MIDI Primer

What is MIDI anyway? First, MIDI is an acronym for

Musical Instru ment Digital Interface. It is a stand ard or

an agreement among the various mu sical instrum ent

manufacturers that we w ill all use the same kind of

connections and electrical signals so that any tw o mu sicalinstruments can be connected together and work.

    Connections:

MIDI connections are all made w ith 5 pin DIN cables

that p lug into 5 pin din jacks on the musical

instrum ents. Only two w ires are used in these cables to

carry the information from one instrum ent to another.

A MIDI Out jack is used by an instrum ent to send

information to another. A MIDI In jack is used by an

instrum ent to receive information from another.

    Signals:

The electrical signals of MIDI are digital, not analog.

This ensures that the comm un ications will be exact. The

expression close enough for rock-and-roll doesnt

app ly here. If you want to hear a snare dru m, but some

of the time hear a bass dru m instead , because they are

close to each other in the note table, youd get u pset.

Digital gives you exactly what you asked for.

The signals are serial, not parallel. This means you d ont

need a complicated or expensive cable to make the

connection. One pair of wires in the cable will do.The signals are opto-coupled. Current flowing th rough

the MIDI cable turn s on a tiny light inside a chip inside the

receiving instrument which ends up prod ucing the

electrical signal that the receiving instrument uses. Wow!

Cool, hu h!? That means that there is no ground

connection between the MIDI-connected instrum ents.

This eliminates 60 cycle hu m from grou nd loops between

    these instruments.

    Concepts and Commands:

The main Concepts you need to un derstand are: MIDIChannels, MIDI Notes and MIDI Velocity. The main

Command s you need to und erstand are: MIDI Note On,

MIDI Note Off, and System Exclusive.

If we use a telephone line analogy, MIDI Channels are

like ph one num bers. Sound Sources are like hom es.

MIDI Notes are like the individual people in the

individu al homes that has that phone number. A

separate MIDI Channel is usually assigned to each Sound

    17

  • 8/3/2019 DrumKat - DK-10Manual

    19/28

    8. Appendix

Source you are u sing (like a phone num ber per hom e).

Each Sound or Pitch within each Sound Source is accessed

by the MIDI Note Num ber that is sent (just like asking

for theperson by name when you reach the correct

home). The Velocity that is sent tells the Sound Source

something about the dynamics of the Soun d - usually how

    loud to play the Sound.

A MIDI Note On Command tells a specific Soun d Source(Channel) to p lay a specific Soun d (Note) at a sp ecific

volume (Velocity). It turns a Soun d on.

A MIDI Note Off Command tells a specific Sound Source

(Channel) to stop playing a specific Sound (Note). It

    turn s a Sound off.

A MIDI System Exclusive Command is something specific

to a particular instrum ent. It is typically used to d o Data

Dumps. A Data Dum p is when an instrument sends its

settings ou t MIDI in a big group so that they can be

saved on some storage d evice (like a comp uter or a MIDIdisk drive). Then the Data Dump can be sent back into th e

instrum ent later on to retrieve those settings again. Data

Dum ps are u sed as a back-up against the accidental loss

    of your settings or Kits.

There are many ar ticles and books available on MIDI if

you are interested in find ing out more about it. Give us a

call if you would like more information.

    some of the paint).

The rubber can be cleaned with a mild cleanser such as

dish wash ing liquid. Do not pour cleanser on your

playing surface. Apply a small amoun t to a clean clothand then clean you r p laying surface with th e cloth.

For a major cleaning of the ru bber p laying su rface,

remove the rubber from your dK10 by first removing

the 6 screws arou nd the front and two sides that hold the

metal frame down over the rubber. Use a mild cleanser

such as Soft Scrub, then wash clean with water. Dry off

    completely before reapplying.

The metal can be cleaned with a mild cleanser such as

    8. Appendix

    Appendix GGlossary of Terms

Channel: In MIDI there are 16 Channels. A MIDI Channel is like a phone number.

For two instruments to commu nicate they mu st talk over the same

Channel. This is very much like comm un icating with a friend on th eph one. You mu st dial the correct phone num ber first.

Controller: A MIDI Controller is a device whose purpose is to control other MIDI

devices (as opposed to a Sound Source whose job is to be controlled).

Generally, a Controller is the Interface device which you play on , such as

a Guitar Controller, Keyboard Controller, Violin Controller, Wind

    Controller, or Drum Controller.

Dynamics: A measure of how hard or softly you are playing with your sticks.

Edit ing: The act of changing the settings in a device.

Factory Kits: Kits that are always present in your instru ment. These are Kits that we at

Alternate Mode generated for you to use with the various Soun d Sources

    available.

Kit: A collection of MIDI Note and Channel settings for all of your Pads,

FootControl, and Bass dru m. Basically, a Kit defines what Sound s your

    Pads make.

MIDI: MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is an agreed upon

standard for commu nications between electronic mu sical instruments. Itis simply the m eans by which you r dK10 comm un icates with the Sound

    Sources you connect it to.

MIDI Delay: A term which is mistakenly used, by m any, to refer to all kinds of delay

ranging from Sound Source Delay, to Sound Travel Delay, to actual d elay

du e to MIDI. The delay caused by the transmission of MIDI information

is only 1 millisecond! (.001 Second).

MIDI In: A 5 pin DIN jack by which an instrument receives MIDI information from

another m usical instrument. Through its MIDI In, the d K10 can receive

DATA DUMPs, Kit changes, and Note/ Channel AutoTrain information.

MIDI Out: A 5 pin DIN jack by which an instrument sends MIDI information to

another instrument. The dK10 sends ou t Channel, Note, and Velocity

information, Continuous Controller messages 01 and 04 if hatKAT is

plugged in and SYS EX Data Du mp s.

    8. Appendix

Note Nu mber: A MIDI Note is the num ber sent in a MIDI NOTE ON or a MIDI

NOTE OFF comman d to tell the receiving instrum ent which Sound to

    make.

Sound Source: A device that accepts MIDI inpu t and then p lays a sound based on the

information it received. Drum machines, samp lers and syn thesizers are

all examples of Soun d Sources.

User Kit: Kits that are changeable in your dK10. These are Kits that you alter to

    meet your needs.

Velocity: A measure of how loud or soft a Note the dK10 will play on your Sound

    Source.
