72 Central & South American immigrants killed by Zetas drug cartel 80 miles south of the border in San Fernando, Tamaulipas.

The immigrants refused to help smuggle drugs into the United States.

Illegal Immigrants Caught in the Middle

Freddy Lala:

One man survived and managed to find Mexican marines back to the ranch where the others were killed.

Drug cartels have taken over human smuggling routes often forcing immigrants to smuggle drugs to pay their fees to enter the United States.

Rodolfo Torre-Cantu:

PRI candidate for Governor of Tamaulipas gunned down on June 28th, 2010 just days before the July 4th elections.

His brother ran in his place and won.

Luis Mario Guajardo-Varela:

PAN candidate for mayor in Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas gunned down with two other men on May 13th, 2010.

Other PAN candidates dropped out of their races following his death.

Matamoros reporter killed in the crossfire while covering shootout between drug traffickers and Mexican soldiers in November 2010.

Mexico: Deadly Nation for Journalists

At least 24 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 1992.

Other journalists have been silenced through assaults and kidnappings.

Many citizens have turned to social media networks such as Twitter and YouTube to share information about drug shootouts.

Federal Response

Federal lawmakers want to increase funds for border security but also create initiatives such as the border fence and unmanned drones.

Texas Response

Texas Gov. Rick Perry wants increased funding for border security.

His request for National Guard troops stationed at the border has not been fully granted.

North Texas Rehab Centers

Thousands of people enter rehab clinics in the DFW metroplex every year but success rates remain low and sometimes have to go through a program more than once to successfully beat their addiction.

Providers have noted that there is not enough public funding for drug rehabilitation programs.

The need is more acute for juveniles for whom there is even less funding.

Dallas County District Attorney’s Office program allows first-time juvenile drug offenders to avoid a criminal past by enrolling in a special, but strict program.
