Avoid the “Squeeze Play”!

Truck and bus drivers sometimes need to swing wide to the lef t in order to saf ely make a right turn. They can’t see cars directly behind orbeside them. Trying to “squeeze” in between the commercial vehicle and the curb is an invitation f or disaster.

At NCI we continually train our drivers and staf f with the latest saf ety courses. There is NOTHING more important to National Carriers than thesaf ety of our drivers and the motoring public. For more inf ormation about the No-Zone areas visithttp://www.sharetheroadsaf ely.org/nozone/wideRightTurns.asp.

Who Cares What They Call You? EDWARD (conclusion)

P os te d on Ja nua ry 21, 2013

(Continued f rom 1/14 blog)

Coaches never call an athlete by their f irst name. I don’t think they care if players have f irst names. During my sporting career I simply became“Kentner.” I was embarrassed by this change. My brother Donald, (known by those back at the f arm as Gene) wasn’t a great athlete who’d lef t alegacy behind f or me to bask in. In f act, I had witnessed him getting beaten up on our school bus not once, but twice. The second time was byNancy Estes . I had also witnessed him getting beat up while carrying groceries out of the local supermarket. His broken glasses and bloodynose were barely noticed due to the glass ketchup bottle contents splattered across the concrete sidewalk. Soon all my teammates startedusing my surname as if I had never been known as Edward or Ed.

Naturally, they continued this practice in our high school classrooms. During my sophomore year, a skinny cheerleader started calling meKentner. I didn’t mind that she called me by my last name. I was f lattered and even excited she knew I had a name. Over time, Kentner becameKentnerd, and Edward became Edweird. Thirty –f ive years later, she still calls me Edweird Kentnerd, and our grandchildren giggle with glee .

During my f ormative years, I never f elt comf ortable with who I was. If someone called me Edward, Eddie, Ed, Lee, Kentner Kenter, Keltner or“hey you” it was suf f ice f or me to answer without correction. As a youngster, I was embarrassed that I was not sure who I was and what I shouldbe called. Several years have passed and many names have been added to the list. Dad, Coach, Fast Ed, Boss, Mrs. Kentner’s husband, and

Grandpa. I think the title of Lylah M. Alphonse’s much read essay “ I’m Just Me” says it best. No matter the name that is used, I am just me.

NCI Teams with Army Corps of Engineers

P os te d on Ja nua ry 18 , 2013

In 2009 the US Army Corps of Engineers responsible f or Beaver Lake, AR and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 56 had booths at theNorth West Arkansas Boat Show. The show is an annual event f eaturing displays f rom boating dealers, outdoor equipment companies, saf etyagencies and others.

Ranger Alan Bland approached National Elite Transportation, LLC employee, Mickey Boyce, who was a member of the USCG Auxiliary. Mickeyhad volunteered to man the USCG booth. Alan mentioned that the Corps of Engineers had a desire to have a boating and water saf ety decaldisplayed on tractor trailers crossing the country and reminding f amilies of water saf ety. Ranger Bland asked if inquiries could be made to NCIabout their willingness to participate in such a project.

Both parties kept in contact throughout 2009 and 2010. The possibility of the project slowly moved f orward. In 2011 Ranger Bland receivednotif ication f rom headquarters in Washington, DC stating the decals had been included in their budget. A f inal proposal was presented to NCIand approved. The US Army, the Corps of Engineers, the USCG and USCG Auxiliary were then notif ied and the order f or the decals was placed.

In 2012 the decals arrived at the Corps of Engineers of f ice in Rogers, AR, and shipped to NCI. The of f icial placement of the f irst decal onan NCI trailer was made by Jim Franck, NCI President, Johnny Branstine, NCI Director of Maintenance, and Brigadier General Luka of the U.S.Army, at National Carrier’s Irving, TX f acility.

NO-ZONE: Avoid An Accident

P os te d on Ja nua ry 16 , 2013

The “No-Zone” represents the danger areas around trucks and buses where crashes are more likely to occur. Some No-Zones are actual blind spots or areas around trucks and buses where your car “disappears” f rom the view of the drivers. These blind

PDFmyURL.com

spots are the Side No-Zone, Rear No-Zone, and Front No-Zone areas. The right-side blind spot is doubly dangerous because trucks and busesmake wide right turns! Knowing the No-Zones can save your lif e.

Don’t “hang out” on either side of trucks. Trucks and buses have big No-Zones (blind spots) on both sides. They’re much larger than your car’sblind spots. If you can’t see the driver’s f ace in the side-view mirror, the driver can’t see you. If that driver needs to swerve or change lanes f orany reason, you may be in big trouble .

Avoid Tailgating. Unlike cars, trucks and buses have huge No-Zones directly behind them. The truck or bus driver can’t see your car there, andyou can’t see what’s going on ahead of you. If the truck or bus driver brakes or stops suddenly, you have no place to go and could end uprunning into them.

Pass Saf ely. You could get “rear-ended” by a truck or bus if you “cut-in f ront” too soon af ter passing, then immediately slow down. If you dothis, trucks are f orced to slam on their brakes. They need nearly twice the time and room to stop as cars. So, when passing, look f or the wholef ront of the truck in your rear-view mirror bef ore pulling in f ront.

Who Cares What They Call You? EDWARD part II

P os te d on Ja nua ry 14, 2013

(Continued f rom 1/7 blog)

I adored my Grandpa Bob. He had visited a f ew times bef ore I was old enough to start school. I missed kindergarten due to a f amily movef rom a trailer court in New Mexico to a f arm in Missouri. Grandpa joined us on the f arm a couple years af ter we moved. He excelled at playingsolitaire and teasing us. I never really understood why he lived with us, but I enjoyed him being there. He wasn’t much to help out around thef arm, and in that way I took af ter him.

My dad was quite the opposite. I cannot remember a single evening af ter supper that he did not drag us boys out to the machine shed to handhim tools while he worked until it was our bedtime. Once while we were cutting cordwood, I was sitting on a stump daydreaming. Over the roar ofthe chainsaw, I heard Dad yell at me, “Get of f your f uzzy butt and get to work.” I was a f irst grader and my grandpa Bob had great f un with thisnew name. He called me Fuzz or Fuzzy until the day he died.

As I began attending junior high, my school name altered . I attended seven dif f erent classes each day. My f irst hour teacher was thebenevolent Mr. Shockley . Bef ore taking roll on the f irst day, he inf ormed us we were no longer in grade school. If we wanted to be called by adif f erent name, let him know and he would call us by that name. Andrew wanted to be Andy , Michael wanted to be Mike and I thought this wouldbe a good time to put an end to my dual identity. When he called f or Edward Kentner, I asked to be called Lee . He dutif ully jotted this down andcalled on Royce Gastanue next. He also asked to be called Lee. What? I’d known him since third grade and he had always been Royce. This wasgoing to be conf using f or everyone. Not only would I have a new name, there would be two Lees to keep separate. A week later I asked Mr.

Shockley to start calling me Ed like Mr. Dobbs, my second hour teacher. He never did .

During my late junior high and early senior high years, I f ound my mom had another name she sometimes used. Thankf ully, I only heard it af ew times, but it chilled me to the bone. It is the name all children should f ear. “Edward Lee Kentner, come here this minute,” she wouldcommand. Everyone knows if a f ull name is called f ollowed by a command, what is about to happen, won’t be good .

No-Zone: NCI Educates the Motoring Public

P os te d on Ja nua ry 9, 2013

In 1991 with the enactment of the Intermodal Surf ace Transportation Ef f iciency Act, Congress directed the Federal Highway Administration –FHWA (now under the direction of the Federal Motor Carrier Saf ety Administration - FMCSA ) to educate the driving public about how to saf elyshare the road with trucks and buses. In response, FMCSA introduced the “No-Zone” or “Share the Road” Program in 1994.

The Campaign was created in 1994 to educate motorists about how to saf ely share the road with trucks and buses (Commercial Motor Vehicles[CMVs]). Its goal is to increase awareness of the No-Zones — danger areas like blind spots, around commercial vehicles, in which cars“disappear” f rom the view of the truck or bus driver. No-Zones are areas where crashes are more likely to occur. Educating drivers about theNo-Zones may reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage f rom these kinds of crashes.

National Carriers was pleased to join this ef f ort and continues to provide education on the highways of America with our No-Zone trailer.Opportunities to educate at schools, parades, and civic clubs allows NCI to continue to f urther this important saf ety initiative.

The “No-Zone” represents the danger areas around trucks and buses where crashes are more likely to occur. Some No-Zones are actual blindspots or areas around trucks and buses where your car “disappears” f rom the view of the drivers.

Who Cares What They Call You? EDWARD

P os te d on Ja nua ry 7, 2013

Edward. Edward? As the f irst grade teacher peered around the class patiently, she again called out, “Is Edward Kentner here?” Suddenly, Isnapped to attention, recognizing my last name. The f irst name attached to my surname was a mystery, but I knew I was a Kentner. I timidlyraised my hand, which got an immediate smile f rom Mrs. Toll. I decided at school students must have dif f erent names than at home.

PDFmyURL.com

Since my earliest recollection, everyone I knew called me Lee. Of course, the only people I knew were my immediate f amily: Mom, Dad,Grandma Mary, Grandpa Bob (not the husband of Grandma Mary), and my brothers, Gene and Steve. We were a f arm f amily with no closeneighbors or relatives. Our lives revolved around gathering eggs, raising a garden, milking cows, and slopping hogs. I always thought I was mymom’s f avorite because I could make her laugh. I loved to hear her call my name. It was like hearing music.

Thus began my lif e with a dual identity . From the time I stepped of f the school bus each af ternoon until I mounted the steep, intimidatingbus steps each morning, I was Lee. Lee was the animal-loving f arm kid who enjoyed milk toast f or breakf ast. From approximately 7:15 everymorning (Monday through Friday) until 3:45 each af ternoon, I was Edward . Here, I was the socially retarded, country hick with two pair of schoolpants and three school shirts. I cleverly mixed and matched my wardrobe so none of my classmates realized how poor our f amily was. I hadone pair of shoes, and I hoped no one noticed. A strange thing happened that f irst year while riding the bus. I f ound out my older brotherGene’s school name was Donald. I decided Edward wasn’t such a bad school name.

Garfield Rocks

As a child, I would look f orward to the Sunday newspaper and its comic section. Scanning Blondie and Dagwood , skimming through BeetleBailey, and glancing at Dick Tracy –then there it was, that which I had searched f or. The f at, lazy, lasagna eating, sarcastic, orange cat namedGarf ield. Saying things he shouldn’t and not doing things he should.

Over the next month, I have asked our drivers and of f ice staf f to allow Garf ield to accompany them. We hope to have photographs f romaround the United States of the f at cat doing “his thing”, whatever that might be.
