What is a DriveCam?
Implementation at O&R Utilities
• Phase I– 2005 – 7 cameras
• Based on employees driving record – 2 preventable MVAs in 18 months or 3 preventable MVAs in all
• Cameras needed to be manually downloaded
• Phase II– 2007 – 30 camera pilot program in West Nyack Meter Reading
(CECONY added an additional 70 cameras)• Cameras were WiFi download and audio option was disabled
• Local Union files for arbitration
Implementation at O&R Utilities
• Phase III– 2009 – 200 camera managed program companywide
• Cameras are cell phone based and download nightly
• Clips are pre-screened and scored by DriveCam – placed in online database
• Event Review with employees– Initially conducted by Safety Department – Union Team
• Team dissolved – at Union’s Requests
– Moved to a Safety Department review and coaching process
– Currently Supervisors review and coach events – unless event is serious
Lessons Learned
• Check state and local laws
• Involve transportation to assess installation –some battery issues
• Difficulty with tampering and blocking camera
• Program is time consuming and requires constant oversight
• Blanket entire fleet if possible
