POTASSIUM ACETATE Description
Potassium acetate is an alternative source of potassium ions to the more commonly used potassium chloride. It is principally used to formulate water based fluids where KCl cannot be used due to environmental restrictions on the use of chloride ions.

Application
Potassium acetate is used as a source of potassium ions. These ions, being non hydrated and of the right size compete strongly for the interlayer sites of swelling clay minerals such as montmorillonite and illite, and drive out most of the naturally occurring calcium and sodium ions. This converts the swelling clays into more stable pseudo mica-type structures, thus stabilising the so called “gumbo’ shales.
Advantages
When used in as an inhibitor offers three forms of inhibition. (Cationic exchange, Osmotic pressure and prevention of pore pressure transmission).
Offers a inhibitive environment without the chlorides. Ideal for use in sensitive environmental areas.
Recommended Treatment
The concentration of potassium depends on the level of magnesium and on the estimated bottom hole temperature. The normal concentration would be 10.5 - 40.0 lb/bbl (30 – 114 kg/m3) or higher. Handling Recommendation

Application
Potassium Sulphate is used as a source of potassium ions where a chloride free fluid is required in order to meet environmental discharge and disposal regulations.
Advantages
Tried and tested alternative to potassium chloride. Offers a inhibitive environment without the chlorides. Ideal for use in sensitive environmental area.
Recommended Treatment
The concentration of potassium depends on the level of magnesium and on the estimated bottom hole temperature. Concentrations range from 10.5 - 38 lb/bbl (30 – 108 kg/m3).
Limitation
Cannot be used in fluids containing high calcium and magnesium as it precipitates these ions. The maximum quantity of Potassium Sulphate that can be used is 10%, 38 b/bbl (108 kg/m3).

CALCIUM CHLORIDE Description
Calcium chloride, CaCI2 is used as a completion, workover, gravel packing, perforating and packer fluid. It is also used as an osmotic generator in non-aqueous systems. It is available in a variety of purities varying from 74 – 95+ %.

Application
The amount of Calcium chloride added to the mud is dependent on the water activity and or density of the fluid that is required.
Advantages
Readily available. High purity product. Economically viable. Common oil field usage.
Recommended Treatment
As a brine Calcium chloride can be used to formulate single salt brine to 11.67 lb/gal (1398 kg/m3) or in combination with other salts to form brines of the required density. The most common combination is with Calcium Bromide brines to densities up to 15.1 lb/gal (1812 kg/m3). For details of concentrations required check brine tables. In non-aqueous fluids, treatments will depend on the required degree of osmotic activity required. Limitation
The use of Calcium chloride may be restricted by local HSE rules. If combined with monovalent salts it may cause precipitation in solution. Compatibility with work over chemicals should be confirmed prior to use. Compatibility with various rubber drilling components should be confirmed prior to contact. The crystallisation point of brines must be carefully checked to ensure they are not too low.

Application
NX-PAC LV is a combined filtration controller and minimal viscosifier for water based drilling fluids systems. NX-PAC LV is a high performance product, ideal in low solid muds, designed for fast penetration. NX-PAC LV minimises mud costs, as it is effective at low concentrations.
Advantages
NX-PAC LV imparts reduced viscosity to a mud. Small quantity of NX-PAC LV is sufficient to maintain excellent fluid loss control. NX-PAC LV has resistance against ions including Ca++, K+ and Na+.
Recommended Treatment
1. Fresh water mud 0.5 – 1.5 lb/bbl (1.4 – 4.3 kg/m3). 2. Seawater mud 0.5 – 2.0 lb/bbl (1.4 – 5.7 kg/m3). 3. Saturated salt water mud 2.0 – 4.0 lb/bbl (5.7 – 11.4 kg/m3). NX-PAC LV has a synergetic effect on filtration control when used in combination with starches and derivatised starches. Limitations Although tolerant of high temperatures and salinity, the effect of the polymer is reduced. In high temperature and high salinity environments use of polymer extenders such as NX-OXSCAV will enhance efficacy. Temperature stable to 300°F.

Recommended Treatment

NX-DEFOAM A is a blend of high molecular weight alcohol and modified fatty acid derivatives. NX-DEFOAM A is a water dispersible premium grade defoamer.

Application
NX-DEFOAM A is used in any application where it is desirable to reduce the foaming tendencies of water base mud. It suppresses foam in all types of water-based mud including brines. It is compatible with all water base systems and restores pump pressure reduced by air or gas in the drilling mud.
Advantages
Economical. Good at reducing or eliminating gas cutting. Effective against most types of foam.
Recommended Treatment
Add NX-DEFOAM A at 0.1 - 1 gallons (0.38 - 3.78 litre) per 25 bbl (4 m3) of mud as required to reduce the foaming. Limitation
Over treatment may enhance foaming. When used in DRILL-IN fluids, use must be approved by testing.

Application

NX-MUL S is a proprietary anionic surfactant blend for use as a secondary emulsifier in synthetic and oil based drilling fluids.

Application
NX-MUL S offers emulsion stability as well as high temperature tolerance and resistance to contamination. NX-MUL S does not require lime, however the use of lime will enhance the emulsion stability and the HTHP Fluid Loss.

NX-MUL S improves emulsion stability. NX-MUL S has secondary wetting agent capabilities. NX-MUL S helps maintain HTHP fluid loss in a water-free state. NX-MUL S will enhance thermal stability and increase contamination tolerance of oil mud.

NX-RM is used as a viscosifier in invert oil / synthetic base systems. NX-RM is designed to provide increased yield point and gel strengths with minimal plastic viscosity in invert oil / synthetic base systems. NX-RM may be used with any type of oil to obtain increased carrying capacity and improve the shear thinning and thixotropic characteristics of invert oil/Synthetic base systems. NX-RM Can be used to prepare newly blended oil/Synthetic muds at ambient temperatures, which will contain satisfactory yield point and gel structure values to support weight material until NX-GEL and or NX-GEL HT have fully yielded. NX-RM may be added to an existing oil mud to provide increased yield point and gel strengths for improved hole cleaning. NX-RM may be used to formulate high viscosity sweeps and may also be used to for spacer fluids where viscosified oil mud is needed to separate two fluids.
Advantages
NX-RM enhances the performance of organoclays under initial, low temperature mixing conditions resulting in improved yield point and gel structure.
Ideal as a rheological enhancer for new build load out muds, as CONFI-GEL/CONFI-GEL HT may not have fully yielded.
Additional of NX-RM to oil muds containing CONFI-GEL will cause the fluid to quickly develop increased gel structures and permit the oil mud to become thixotropic. NX-RM is not an oil-thickening agent, but performs by maximizing the thixotropy of fluids which contain organophilic clay.
NX-RM will aid in reducing HTHP fluid loss and improving emulsion stability.

Application
NX-CLOUD is a medium–cloud point glycol designed for a salinity range from freshwater to ± 150,000 mg/l. It can provide significant reductions in mud dilution rates, reduced friction coefficients, less mud related drilling problems and enhanced rates of penetration. It is particularly effective with common salts used in drilling fluids. NX-CLOUD is compatible with most aqueous systems. When clouded out the glycol strongly at the surface of troublesome swelling shales forming a water repellent barrier, thus minimising the effects of troublesome water sensitive shales on the drilling process and mud properties. Excellent inhibition is observed in the presence of potassium ions which are recommended for optimum performance.

HEC L liquid viscosifier is a suspension of high quality hydroxy ethyl cellulose polymer in a synthetic carrier. Application
HEC L is used to viscosify single salt CaCl2 brines and all mono-valent-salt brines such as NaCl, NaBr, KCl, KBr, and NH4Cl. It can also provide viscosity for spacers or pills, fluid loss control, hole cleaning while washing, milling or reaming, gravel pack fluids, and non-damaging drill-in fluids. It is not adversely affected by polar compound or divalent cations such as calcium and magnesium or cement.

Easily dispersible and rapid viscosity development with minimum tendency to form ‘fisheyes’.
Breakable polymer for non-damaging applications. Viscosity develops without high shear. Stable at temperature up to 225 °F (107 °C).
Recommended Treatment
Treatment levels of 0.6 - 1.2 gal/bbl (14 - 28 litre/m3) of completion fluids. Maximum of viscosity will achieve at pH range of 7 - 9. HEC L should be poured slowly into the hopper or under special conditions, directly into the agitated fluids.

Application
NX-ZO material reacts with sulphides to form Zinc Sulphide, ZnS under normal operating conditions. This precipitate is an insoluble, inert, fine solid which remains harmlessly in the mud system or is removed by the solids control equipment. NX-ZO is effective at the pH levels found in drilling fluids. It is recommended that a pH above 11 be maintained whenever H2S is expected. This high alkalinity converts the dangerous H2S gas to less toxic disulphide (H2) and sulphide (S2-) ions. The alkaline pH >11 allows an extra margin of safety. NX-ZO should be added through the hopper.
Advantages
Effective oil based hydrogen sulphide scavenger - pilot test is recommended before treatment.
Recommended Treatment
The initial treatment of NX-ZO is usually 1 - 2 lb/bbl (2.85 - 5.7 kg/m ).Subsequent field treatments should
be based on approximately 1 lb/bbl (2.85 kg/m ) of NX-ZO per 600 mg/l of sulphides detected. Use a
Garrett Gas Train to accurately determine sulphide levels in the mud.

Application
NX-SCAV TZ is used as pre-emptive treatment for potential hydrogen sulphide existence or following a gas influx. NX-SCAV TZ is compatible with all types of water based mud.
Advantages
NX-SCAV TZ miscible with water. It can be mixed readily in all water based mud systems and has minimal or no adverse effects on mud properties at recommended concentrations.
NX-SCAV TZ is able to remove souble sulphides when added to a water based mud sytem. NX-SCAV TZ converts sulphides to sulphur which is completely insoluble in water and will not revert
to form hydrogen sulphide. NX-SCAV TZ is a liquid product, it can be used in solids free fluids such as completion brine, packer
fluid, etc. NX-SCAV TZ doesn’t contain zinc or other heavy metals and is not toxic to aquatic life.
Recommended Treatment
Recommended pre-emptive concentration of NX-SCAV TZ in water based fluid is 0.05 to 1 gal/bbl. 0.1
gal/bbl of NX-SCAV TZ shall treat 100ppm of hydrogen sulphide.

Application
NX-OXSCAV acts as a sacrificial oxygen scavenger and prevents corrosion. It also acts as a polymer extender ensuring the efficacy of polymers in high temperature and pH environments.
Advantages
NX-OXSCAV eliminates corrosion due to dissolved oxygen. NX-OXSCAV reduces the possibility of drill pipe failure such as twist-offs, washout and rig equipment
maintenance cost. NX-OXSCAV increases the life of pump parts as well as the drill string, casing strings and production tubing.
Recommended Treatment
Inject liquid NX-OXSCAV at controlled rates directly into the pump section. Injection rate is dependent upon the oxygen content and mud circulation rate. Typical injection rates can be
1 – 2.5 gal/hr (4 - 10litre/hr). Exact injection rates must be regulated by monitoring excess sulphite concentration in the mud system, at the flow line.
To assure the complete removal of dissolved oxygen, maintain the excess sulphite content in the drilling fluid of 100 - 300 ppm, depending upon conditions.
For drilling fluids made up with extremely hard water, increase the concentration of excess sulphite to 300ppm level.

Limitation

NX-THIN HT L Description

Application
NX THIN HT L is an effective water based deflocculated. It also acts as a preventer of high temperature flocculation. It’s thermally stable to temperatures in excess of 350 F (176 C) and moderately tolerant to calcium and alkali metal salts.

Application
NX-CIDE is effective against sulphate reducing, sulphide forming and slime forming bacteria. NX-CIDE surface active property provides penetration into slime masses and adherence to metal surfaces that prevent further bacterial slime build-up in secondary oil recovery water injection systems.
Advantages
Effective against bacteria, fungi, yeasts. Highly effective at low concentrations. Tolerant of high salt environments. No odour or vapours at effective treatment concentrations. Does not contain formaldehyde. Effective over a wide range of pH and temperatures. Readily water soluble.
Recommended Treatment
The treatments can best be established by biological bacteria count tests. Normal additions range from 0.2 - 1.0 lb/bbl (0.57 – 2.85 km3). Limitation

Application
NX-LUBE N is compatible with most water based muds. Although effective in most aqueous systems this high value additive was formulated for use in DRILL-IN fluids and clear brines.

Application

NX-NANO SURF is a highly concentrated blend of surfactant, powerful water-wetting agents designed to effectively break and remove invert emulsion filter cake. It disperses mud cakes efficiently with low environmental impact, by changing the filtercake surface into water-wet condition. The nano phase mixture with few surfactants in NX-NANO SURF serve to both release the solids and mud residue from the downhole formation surfaces and release any oily residue blockage to minimise formation damage , facilitating removal from the near well-bore and water wet contact media by reducing the interfacial tension to ultra-low value.

NX-NANO SURF is used to clean up wells from the exposed reservoir matrix prior to the start of production. It is intended to be used as a solution in freshwater or seawater and brine, and applied as a ‘spacer’ perforating fluid or as reservoir suspension fluids. It is also designed to disperse the solids into water phase and prevent re-deposition of oil-wet solids into the reservoir rock or other media surfaces. NX-NANO SURF does not contain either aromatic hydrocarbons or alkyl-phenol surfactant.

NX-NANO SURF is a blend of nano phase surfactants and water-wetting agents that will effectively disperse the residues of drilling mud and other deposits into water wet condition for easy and effective removal as well as filtercake removal. NX-COR Description
NX-COR is an oil-soluble, slightly water dispersible, film-forming organic amine type corrosion inhibitor. It effectively protects the drill string by forming a tough, persistent film on metal surfaces. It is compatible with all types of water-base muds, both weighted and un-weighted. It is most applicable when severely corrosive conditions are anticipated e.g. when utilising air-drilling techniques, or in the presence of carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulphide gases.

Application
NX-COR is used especially as a corrosion inhibitor in water-based drilling fluid systems. It coats both the inside and outside of drill pipe.
Advantages
NX-COR provides excellent corrosion inhibition for the drill string tubular goods and downhole tools.
Compatible with all water based fluids. Mixes readily with all oil solvents allowing ease of application. Effective in low concentrations. Stable up to 350 °F (176 °C).
Recommended Treatment
NX-COR is typically blended in a non-aqueous fluid, base oil or other hydrocarbon, at a ratio of 14 gal (52 litres) of NX-COR per 2 bbl (0.32 m3) of non-aqueous fluid and is applied directly to the pipe to be protected by spraying onto the pipe. NX-COR can be used a pill for pumping inside the drillstring at a rate of 2 -3 gallons (7 – 11 litres) per 1000 ft (300m) of pipe. Monitor effectiveness by running corrosion coupons. If corrosion levels is too high increase frequency of treatment. Most effective if treatments are on the drill pipe directly and not via the mud system.

NX-PPD C100 Description
NX-PPD C100 is a concentrated pour point depressant , a product to reduce pour point and improve pumpability of a wide range of waxy crude oils, in distillates and residual fuel oils. At this temperature, most concentrated pour point depressants are solid thus ideal formulation is required for each crude oil characteristic. This product has shown an excellent performance in solid formation modification for improving flow. Crystal modifiers interfere with the normal crystal growth pattern and prevent the growth of insoluble deposits.

Application
NX-PPD C100 pour point depressant can be formulated into finished blends using heavy aromatic solvents. If winterization is required, toluene or xylene should be used. NX-PPD C100 can also be combined with paraffin solvents or paraffin dispersants to enhance the performance of the finished compounds. When formulations made from this product are used to inhibit paraffin crystallization or for pour point depression, continuous injection is recommended. The severity of the problem will dictate the dosage, but a typical rate would be 1 gallon of a typical dilution of this product to 500 barrels of produced oil. An initial slug of 5 to 10 gallons should be made prior to continuous injection.
Winterization properties of this product will depend on the solvents used for dilution. The pour point of finished blends can be adversely affected by heating/cooling cycles. If the sample is cooled from 60˚F to lower temperatures, it will be fluid at the published pour point. If the temperature is cycled or the product is exposed to cold temperatures for extended periods of time, gelling may occur at significantly higher temperatures. This gel can easily be broken by agitation or heating with no detrimental effect to the product or its performance. Heated storage to a minimum of 60˚F is recommended until the product is moved to the field for immediate use.
Advantages
Dilutions of NX-PPD C100 can also be effective in treating tank bottoms where paraffin has separated out of stored crude oil.
