First SeasonRhode Island ‘02Kim Camara takes the helm of the Dragons this season as the seventh head coach in the 24-year historyof Drexel softball. Camara’s post at Drexel is her first head coaching position after serving as the topassistant at UNC Wilmington for the past five years. Camara, who takes over for former coach TerryDeTuro, will strive to continue Drexel’s ascent this season, as the squad has improved or maintained itswin total in each of the last four seasons.

Camara’s coaching and recruiting resume at UNC Wilmington is nothing short of impressive. She playedan integral role in the Seahawks’ rapid rise to success in the Colonial Athletic Association. WithCamara’s help the Seahawks earned their first berth in the CAA Tournament in 2006 after finishing inthird place in just their third season of competition in the CAA. Camara was also instrumental inrecruiting All-Conference First Team selection Ali Gardner, who led the CAA in hitting last season. Sixother Seahawks, who Camara helped to recruit, were also named to All-Conference teams in 2006.

Her passion for softball and its intricacies developed as a four-year letterwinner at the University ofRhode Island from 1997 to 2000. She served as a team captain as a junior and a senior and earned theField General Award during the 1999 season as well as earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team atthe UNC Triangle Classic. She graduated in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and went on

to work as operations manager and instructor at Planet FastPitch in Uxbride, Mass.

Camara moved into the assistant coach position at UNC Wilmington in 2001 where she assumed responsibility for recruiting, organizingpractices, and game-day coaching. She worked primarily with pitchers and catchers and also instructed players in batting and baserunning. Her work with the team was displayed prominently on the field last season as the Seahawks led the CAA in batting average, sluggingpercentage and hits.

Camara’s intensity and commitment to excellence is a perfect match for a Drexel team that has been on the rise in recent years. The Dragonsexploded for one of their most potent offensive seasons in the program’s history last year. While the squad fell short of the conferencetournament with a 19-29 record, there were plenty of reasons to be hopeful for the future. The team returns all but one regular starter, including All-Conference selections Ashlee Veilleux and Amanda Hastings. Hastings and the talented crop of juniors and seniors on the teamtasted post-season competition at the CAA Tournament in 2005 and they are poised for Camara to lead them back this season.

2007 COACHING STAFFAssistant Coach Lisa Wambold

First Season Hofstra ‘06Lisa Wambold joins the Drexel coaching staff aftercompleting one of the most successful softballcareers in recent CAA history. Wambold, whoplayed second base and outfield throughout herfour-year career at Hofstra, was a two-time All-Conference selection and the 2005 CAA Player ofthe Year. That season she also earned a place onthe All Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team. Wamboldwas at the heart of a Pride team that dominatedthe conference during her tenure. In her

sophomore season, Wambold was named the Most Valuable Player of the CAATournament and she went on to lead the Pride to conference tournamentchampionships and NCAA Tournament berths in each of her four seasons withthe team.

Wambold wrapped up her playing career at Hofstra last season and graduatedwith degrees in elementary education and psychology. Her equally successfulcareer in the classroom included a spot on the 2005 CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team. This season the Horsham, Pa. native returns to thePhiladelphia area, bringing her passion for the game and winning attitude asvaluable assets to the Drexel coaching staff. Wambold will assist Head CoachKim Camara with on-field coaching and recruiting, as well as working with theinfield and as a hitting coach.

Assistant Coach Krista Van WertFirst SeasonDrexel ‘06Krista Van Wert returns to Drexel Field this seasonas an assistant coach on Kim Camara’s staff. Aftera successful four-year career at Drexel, Van Wertworked on the co-op portion of her Drexel degreelast year in the Philadelphia area. As an assistantcoach this season, Van Wert will work primarilywith pitchers and the infield.

During her playing career from 2002-05, Van Wertwas one of Drexel’s top starters. Her best

performance came during her senior season when she posted an 11-6 recordand helped the team qualify for the conference tournament for the first timesince joining the CAA. She finished 10th in the nation with an 0.84 earned-runaverage that year, was an All-Conference selection and named to the NationalFastpitch Coaches Association’s All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team.

In addition to pitching, Van Wert also played reliably at shortstop for Drexel, posting a .948 fielding percentage and leading the team in assists as a senior. She brings to the bench a tie to Drexel’s proud softball tradition and areminder of its resurgence in recent years.

Van Wert is a Yardley, Pa. native and she attended Pennsbury High School. Shegraduated from Drexel with a degree in biology.

The Spring of 2007 brings new promise for the DrexelDragons softball program. The team returns one of its mostexperienced and talented groups of players in recent history.First-year head coach Kim Camara inherits a team thatrewrote Drexel’s record books last season and has thepotential to soar to new heights this year. Camara, whostepped in as head coach after the resignation of four-yearskipper Terry DeTuro, brings a good understanding ofcompetition in the CAA after a five-year tenure as assistantcoach at UNC Wilmington. Camara was an essential part ofthe recruiting and coaching that has helped to make theSeahawks one of the top-tier teams in the conference.Camara takes the helm of a squad that returns all but onestarter from last year, including All-CAA performersAmanda Hastings and Ashlee Veilleux. Veilleux led atalented crop of freshmen who came into their own lastseason and return as confident sophomores ready tocontinue their contributions this year. Hastings, an All-CAAselection at designated player, and catcher Molly Dacey, whoset Drexel’s single-season mark for RBIs last year, headlinethe junior class. Brianne Brown and Lena Aiken, thecornerstones of the team during the past three years arelooking to close out their senior season with a trip to theconference tournament.

InfieldBrianne Brown anchors the Dragons on the infield dirt fromher patrol at third base. Brown has been one of the steadiestfielding third basemen in the conference during the pastthree seasons. Her defense at the hot corner is a key tobuilding the confidence of a young pitching staff this year.Freshman Ashley Botelho could spell Brown at third basethis season. Botelho is a versatile player who could alsospend time behind the plate. Sophomore Kristen Beaverplayed her way into the everyday shortstop role last season.Beaver’s height helps her to cover a lot of ground in themiddle infield and she backs up her range with the strongthrowing arm that is essential for successful shortstops.Beaver showed marked improvement at the plate throughoutlast season and ended the year as one of the team’s hottesthitters down the stretch. Fellow sophomore Ashlee Veilleux, one of the team’s top pitchers and offensive threats, willalso see time at shortstop when she is not in the pitchingcircle. Both Veilleux and Beaver are versatile enough to playseveral positions for the Dragons and the addition of utilityinfielder Carla Waldron will give the Dragons depth on thedirt this year. Shoring up the middle infield at the secondbase position is senior Lena Aiken who has been a stalwartat second throughout her career. Aiken is one of thetoughest players on the team. She has worked her way backfrom several injuries over the past three years. Aiken is notafraid to sacrifice her body to make a play and her hard-nosed, competitive nature has helped to set the tone for theteam. Sandi Wambold earned a starting spot at first baseafter proving to be one of the team’s best hitters in theclutch last year. Coach Camara has added Lisa Wambold, a

former All-CAA second baseman at Hofstra, to her staff tohelp work with the infield. Wambold, the CAA’s Player of theYear in 2005, helped her Hofstra team earn NCAAappearances in each of her four seasons and will help tobring that winning attitude to the Drexel bench this year.

OutfieldDrexel returns a speedy outfield this season that includessophomore starters Christina Rodriguez and Lisa Williams.Rodriguez led the team in runs scored and ranked amongthe top 10 in the CAA last season while splitting timebetween shortstop and left field. Williams took over as theeveryday centerfielder in her freshman season. She alsosettled into the lead-off position in the lineup afterdisplaying a knack for doing whatever it takes to get onbase. She led the team in walks, was fifth in hits and rankednationally in getting hit by pitches. Her team-leading on-basepercentage was just under .400 and was one of the best inthe conference. Williams’ speed and aggressive nature alsomade her a terror on the base paths, as she ranked amongthe top 10 in the CAA in stolen bases. Lauren Greenberg, who was a four-year fixture in the outfield, is the onlystarter not returning from last year’s squad. Several playerswill likely vie for her position in right field this season.Junior Amanda Hastings, an All-CAA Second Team selection

in 2006 as a designated player, returns with a healthyshoulder this season and, as a result, could return to theoutfield. Ashlee Veilleux could see time there when she’s notpitching and freshman Katrina Gaudier, another pitcher andutility player from California, may also patrol the outfieldgrass. In addition, sophomore Jessica Bongiovanni couldplay herself into the rotation after getting a season ofDivision I softball under her belt last year. Having her bat inthe lineup gives Camara another offensive weapon at herdisposal.

BatteryThe key to Drexel’s success this season is inextricably linkedto the success of its young pitching staff. Former Drexelpitching stand-out Krista Van Wert has been added toCamara’s staff to tackle this challenge. VanWert, who was anAll-Conference selection as a senior and ranked nationally inlowest ERA in 2005, knows what it takes to be a dominantpitcher at the Division I level and will work to impart thisknowledge on Drexel’s rotation, which is comprised of fourunderclassmen. Veilleux will head up the pitching staff whileworking on the sequel to one of the best freshman seasonsin Drexel softball history. The crafty hurler pitched her wayto two no-hitters last year, which was just the second timethe feat has been accomplished in the history of theprogram. Her tenacity helped to lead a Drexel pitching staffthat surrendered the fewest hits in the CAA last season andheld opponents to a conference-low .237 batting average.Veilleux was even more dangerous at the plate. The FirstTeam All-CAA and Second Team All-Mid-Atlantic Regionselection led the team in batting average, doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage. She set single-

game records for singles and doubles and matched Drexel’ssingle-season mark with 28 RBIs. Veilleux’s primarybackstop last season was Molly Dacey, who is entering herthird season with the Dragons. Serving as a team captain asa sophomore last year, Dacey had a break-out season. Sheled the conference catchers in batters caught stealing and isranked eighth among Drexel’s all-time fielding-percentageleaders. Dacey also matched Drexel’s single-season RBI markwith 28, making Dacey and Veilleux the most offensivelyproductive battery in school history. She also set a single-game record by driving in eight runs against MarylandEastern Shore. Dacey will again serve as a team captain thisseason and her leadership behind the plate will be key tomanaging a still-developing pitching staff this season.Sophomore Amanda Shattuck led Drexel in saves lastseason, posting the most by a Drexel reliever since 1995.This year she could be used more as a starter, helping to fillthe spot vacated by senior Amanda Heyser. Shattuck locatesher pitches and changes speeds well and after a year ofexperience on the Division I level she will likely emerge as aconfident starter this season. A pair of pitchers fromCalifornia will join the staff this season in hopes ofduplicating the success of fellow golden-stater AshleeVeilleux. Katrina Gaudier helped lead her Northwood Highteam to a league championship from the circle and as an All-Conference shortstop. Breanna Gomez, a two-time All-Conference performer in Whittier, Calif., will also competefor a spot in the starting rotation. Freshman Ashley Botelhogives Drexel another catcher and a big bat in the lineup.Botelho set a school record at Cassidy and Coyle High inRochester, Mass. by driving in 90 runs during her four years.Junior Victoria Hanks also gives Drexel another reliablecatcher. Her experience competing against some of theworld’s best players with the British National team over thepast two summers has helped to make her a poised, confident player and an asset as a team leader.

The ScheduleDrexel starts its 2007 campaign at the North CarolinaCharlotte Tournament where it will square off against UNCGreensboro, Marshall, Western Carolina and the host UNCCharlotte. The Dragons’ home opener is on March 7 whenthey take on Rider in a doubleheader before playing adouble-dip against Rutgers at home three days later. Drexelwill also travel to play in the Delaware State Tournamentbefore opening its conference season against rival Delawareat home on March 24. The Dragons will face a tough road intheir quest for a bid to the CAA Tournament this season asthe conference returns 19 of its 26 All-Conference players, including Player of the Year Ashley Lane from Hofstra. ButDrexel is a team loaded with talent and potential. TheDragons, who ranked among the top three in the CAA inbatting average and on-base percentage, proved that theiroffense can compete with anyone in the conference and witha number of quality young arms in the bullpen this season,Drexel could play its way to a tournament bid in 2007.

Student-athletesrefer to the center as “The ACHIEVE” and have made it a placewhere they like to study, utilize computers and interact with thestaff about academic questions and concerns. The renovation hasmade it possible for more private advising and tutoring to takeplace while maintaining the general use area for computers andstudy halls. The ACHIEVE Center will continue to be used as agathering and instructional space for workshops and meetings topromote and encourage life skills, leadership, personaldevelopment, career readiness and community outreach. Thequality of Drexel’s academic services program is punctuated by thisrenovation and further evidence that at Drexel, the “student” instudent-athlete really does come first.

Vidas Athletic ComplexRenovations to Drexel’s athletics fields continued during thesummer. The Vidas Athletic Complex at 43rd and Powelton nowboasts two turf fields in addition to resurfaced tennis courts and awell-maintained softball field.

“We are excited about the changes that have been implemented atDrexel’s athletics fields,” said Drexel Director of Athletics Dr. EricZillmer. “We feel the upgrades to our facilities enable us to competeand recruit at a higher level and keep us competitive with the otherschools in the Colonial Athletic Association.”

Robert Buckley, ‘58, a member of Drexel’s Board of Trustees and aformer student-athlete at the school, was a key figure in the effortsto make the transformation a reality through his support andgenerous contributions. His company, Buckley and Company, Inc.,completed the base-layer work for the Astroturf field as well asother smaller projects for the renovations.

Last season the field hockey team called Buckley Field “home” forthe first time since 1997. The team plays on the state-of-the-artAstroturf field, which is located on the North side of the Complex. The field also features a new scoreboard as well as bleachers, whichcan seat up to 500 spectators. In its first season on the home turf, the Dragons went 8-4 and lost just one non-conference home gameall season.

Vidas Field is the lower field at the Complex, which serves as thehome for Drexel’s men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams. The field is named for Drexel alum Vince Vidas who graduated in1959 and then earned his master’s in electrical engineering in 1964.He later became the president and CEO of SEMCOR, Inc. A DrexelHall of Fame inductee, Vidas was a three-year letter winner infootball and two-time All-America selection. He also playedbasketball and lacrosse for one season. Vidas married Judy Weberwho was a 1956 Drexel graduate.

The field which carries his name has been converted from naturalgrass to a Sprinturf field, which is a synthetic infill system with acombination of sand and rubber. Last season Vidas Field playedhost to the Drexel Invitational Soccer Tournament and was apractice site for the 2006 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Final Four, inaddition to hosting Drexel’s regular-season soccer and lacrosse

games.

Lighting has been added to both the Astroturf and the syntheticSprinturf fields and a portion of the tennis courts. The addition oflights allows teams to play night games and schedule morning andevening practices to better accommodate the schedules of thestudent-athletes.

The latest additions to the field house complex are the Jack BuckleyHoogstraten Sports Medicine Center and the renovation of both themen’s lacrosse locker room and coaches’ offices. The center allowsDrexel’s sports medicine staff to provide student-athletes withimmediate medical attention and treatment at the athletics fieldcomplex. In addition, locker room facilities have been expandedover the summer. Exterior improvements to the field house, including a 44-by-56 patio addition to the Kopp Lounge, will alsoenable teams and fans to further enjoy the Drexel experience at theVidas Athletic Complex.

The ArmoryThe Philadelphia Armory will be the future home of the DrexelUniversity men’s and women’s basketball teams. A tentative timetable for the transfer has been set for 2007-08 with a possibleopening date for the arena in 2010.

The Armory, which currently houses the 103rd engineeringbattalion, is located across the street from the Daskalakis AthleticCenter one block north of 33rd and Market Street. Designed in 1916by local architect Philip H. Johnson, the three-floor, 21,346 square-foot Philadelphia Armory earned the honor of being listed in theNational Register of Historic Places in 1991. Drexel’s upgrade of theArmory will proceed concurrently with the relocation of the 103rdbattalion to a new base of operations. The renovations will alsoprovide for the continual operation of the National Guard’srecruiting station, headquarters and museum at the Armory.

“This development is a ‘win-win’ situation for Drexel, the NationalGuard and the City of Philadelphia,” said Drexel President Dr.Constantine Papadakis. “Drexel is committed to preserving thishistoric Philadelphia landmark. As the Armory is renovated into aconvocation center and basketball arena, it will become an excellentvenue for celebrating academic and athletic excellence, serving ourstudents and the city in new and exciting ways.”

Preliminary designs depict an excavated arena with the first levelbeing below street level and the second level of seating above it. A4,000-5,000 seating capacity has been proposed along with a hall offame walk, concession stands, LCD boards and eight suites. Thearchitectural plans capture the basketball arena as an exciting venuewith a view of the Philadelphia skyline and a center of Drexelactivity.

“Once completed, the Armory will become a local focal point and, quite possibly, one of the best venues for basketball in the nation, where military history and architectural technology meet within thecontext of sports,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer. “Withsuch a venue, Drexel basektabll is poised to attract more fans andincrease local, regional and national recognition. At the same time, aWest Philadelphia architectural staple will be restored to its originalsplendor.”
