DRESS UP AS...
TO MAKE THE HELMET
1. Measure a length of card that will fit comfortably around your child’s head, then add an extra 3-5cm more to one end. Staple the ends together to make a headband.
2. Cut four strips of card. Use one strip to create an arch from one side of the headband to the other. Staple in place. Repeat on the opposite side so you have a cross. Do the same with the other two pieces of card, placing them diagonally over the cross. Staple into place. Cover all the staples with tape to protect your child’s head.

3. Print out and draw round the horn template on to some white card. Cut them out then tape the horns on to the inside of the Viking helment.
4. Print out and draw round the coin shapes on white card, decorate with red felt tip pen and glue onto the front of your helmet.
4. Lastly, if you want to fill in the gaps in the helmet, then stick some brown tissue paper into place. Now you have your Viking helmet.

If you want to make
Hiccup’s helmet from a
hat, you can still use the
horn template. Just cut
out and stick the horns on
to the side of your hat with
double-sided tape. Stick
some patterned coins on
to the front.Use an old saucepan lid as a shield.
TO MAKE HICCUP’S TOP AND TROUSERS
1. Either paint an old top and trousers with some green paint, or if you are feeling more adventurous, you could dye your outfit, or just use green clothes if you have them!
2. When the trousers and top are dry, cut a hole in the knee of the trousers and zig-zag jagged edges around the trouser ankles and the wrists of your top.
OUTFIT TIPS
If you don’t have any dye,
you can paint the t-shirt with
brown acrylic paint, which
will dry hard when painted.

TO MAKE THE WAISTCOAT
1. Cut the arms off an old t-shirt (ideally a bit bigger than your child’s regular size) – but make sure you save the arms! Cut up and along the middle of the t-shirt to make a waistcoat shape.
2. Fringe the bottom edges of the t-shirt and the saved sleeve pieces with scissors.
3. Place the waistcoat and cut-off arm pieces into some brown dye. Follow the instructions on the packet.
4. When everything is dry, attach the arm strip pieces back on to the shoulders with sticky fixers or you can stitch them back on loosely.
Finish off your outfit with
one of the How to Train Your Dragon books to read on
the day.
