REPORTING TO PARENTS

The end of the first semester is approaching fast and with it comes the first formal report for the school year. Teachers are busy doing final assessments to confirm progress and grades achieved by students and will report across all academic areas against expected standards and social skills in the context of their classes. Formal re-ports are just one of the ways we report to you as parents and carers of our students. The most beneficial and valuable way to get information and to support your children is to meet regularly with your child’s teacher. These don’t always have to be formal meetings and may be as simple as stopping at the end of the day to ask, “How is my child going?” “Are there some areas I can help with?” or “Are you noticing any concerns?” You may want to know what has been achieved to celebrate with your child. Whatever the question, you are showing your child you are there to help and are interested in what they are doing at school. A partnership and working relationship between you, your child and the teacher is a powerful support for your child and their learning. I encourage you to meet with the teacher before the reports come home and build a pattern of regular meetings, even if it is to take a few minutes to look at what your child has done on the day.

Try this simple question today. WILT – What I learnt today. (What did you learn about today?) This will always get a response over the standard, How did you go today? With the response, “Good” or “Yeah”.

The School Board of Wirrabirra School has established a dress code for all students enrolled and reviews this if the need arises.

Wirrabirra School expects that all students will wear the school uniform. Exemptions may be given at the time of enrolment if a parent applies on the grounds of health/cultural/religious reasons. Such exemptions must be obtained in writing and are at the discretion of the principal.

The wearing of denim clothing is not permitted.

changes to the uniform may be introduced by the School Board.

For safety and social reasons, some items of clothing or accessories are not permitted under any circumstances. Spe-cifically, facial piercing other than ear-rings (small stud/sleeper ear-rings only), necklaces and other jewellery, high-heeled shoes, thongs, stick-on tattoos, caps, nail polish, make-up. Medical Alert bracelets and watches are allowed.

For health reasons, hair longer than collar length must be tied back and must not cover the face on girls and boys.

Hair is to be in natural tones only.

The school has a ‘No Hat – No Play’ policy. All students must wear the Wirrabirra approved bucket hat. No other hat will be accepted.

Children are required to wear closed and supportive shoes.

If students do not comply with the Dress Code Policy, the following consequences will apply:

1. Students are not permitted to represent the school or attend excursions if they do not have the appropriate school dress code. This includes sporting events.

2. As a condition of election or appointment to a leadership role, councillors, faction captains, whizz kid and environmental monitors are expected to wear school uniform and abide by the Dress Code.

SCHOOL DRESS CODE

The school has a tradition of children wearing the school uniform and this is supported by a Dress Requirements Policy. Parents recognise the value of uniforms and cooperate with the school by presenting their children in school uniform. Not only are uniforms cost effective but they also enhance the tone of the school. Please support the school dress code and dress your children in school uniform. Children are required to wear school uniform whenever they are representing the school. This is to show that we are proud of our school and also enables teachers to quickly identify our students and ensure their safety.

HATS

As part of our Sun Safe Health Program for the children in our school, students are required to wear a hat when going outside to play at all times. By doing this we hope to foster regular hat wear when outside and reduce the incidences of skin cancer in later life.

A school-approved bucket hat needs to be worn by all students. School hats can be purchased from the Clothing Pool or at the front office. These are reversible with school and faction colours.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Currently we have a small group of students engaged in visiting the Buckley Centre to meet with some of their aged residents. Mrs Melvin has organised this for us and we are very proud to give these students the opportunity to work with the Buckley Centre and residents to spend time doing activities, talking and asking questions. I believe there are great benefits for our students and the residents. Our students gain an insight into times past, listening and questioning to hear stories and providing joy and care to others. For the old ones, they appreciate the connection to young people and the company of someone who is prepared to listen and enjoy an activity together. Next Tuesday, Mrs Ivatts and I will accompany the children and join with them to show our care. Thanks to Mrs Melvin, Miss Lahne and Mrs Ivatts who have been with the children the first two visits.

Regards, Steve Richards, Principal

Dear Parents/Carers

For the last four weeks the students have been participating in a basketball program with Basketball WA. The develop-ment the teachers have seen in the skills the children are acquiring has been pleasing. The Sporting Schools grant has funded this program. The school still has some funds remaining and we will be using this to purchase some resources that Basketball WA has recommended so we can continue to develop the ball skills dur-ing play times and phys ed sessions. Taking your child to the local park where there is a hoop is a great weekend or after school activity to help with devel-oping children’s gross motor development and the skills acquired by doing programs such as this.

Teachers are busy finalising your child’s report. These will be sent home to all families in the last week of school. Your child’s achievements which will be reflected in the school report, will be the starting point for the development of their IEP for Semester 2. We encourage all families to carefully look over the report and note any ques-tions you may have to discuss with your child’s teacher next term during your IEP meeting.

I would like to acknowledge Mrs Jo Sutton who has been working very hard to ensure our students have many ways to communicate with their peers and teachers. Each teacher in our school now has their own PODD book which they carry around with them all day. If you have been in the school, you may have noticed staff carrying a PODD book attached to a strap. It’s pleasing to see children seeking the PODDs to communicate with staff. We are working towards creating PODD Books specifically for individual children. Yesterday, Jo Sutton, Rebecca Scoble Wood and myself visited College Row School in Bunbury who have been very successful with their implementation of Augmented Communication Systems to gather some ideas and observe their environment. With the roll out of NDIS starting to happen within the Gosnells area, you may wish to consider including an individualised PODD made as part of your child’s plan. PODDs are very time consuming to make and require a lot of resources to individualise. The school is happy to discuss whether your child could benefit from an individualised PODD Book and estimate of costing needed for them to be made up. If your child has Speech Therapy, the therapist may also be able to help with this.

Don’t forget, next Friday 14th June is Pyjama Day. For a gold coin donation, children can wear pyjamas to school. All funds raised go towards the Year 6 camp happening next term.

Kind regards

Julie Dawson

Chaplain’s Chat

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This term, students have been learning about the noble human sentiment of respect with the focus now on respecting others. Respect for others is about treating people with honour and dig-nity, regardless of age, race, gender, education or status. Howev-er, respect is not something that is automatically bestowed on everyone. For example, a person may be highly skilled and knowledgeable yet display words and actions that are dishonest, showing lack in character so respect may not be given to them. Respect does not mean that we must like everyone, and others may not treat us as they should but even when we disagree or need to part company with others, we can still treat them with dignity and respect. We owe everyone a basic level of respect for being a fellow human being, valuing their ideals, and opinions even if we do not agree with them.

Our level of respect for others will vary from person to person. It will vary depending upon our view of them and their own self-respect. Respect for others can be interpreted in many ways. Am I disrespecting someone by not holding the door open for them as they enter a room right after I do? Or am I disrespectful if I do not say ‘bless you’ to someone near me who sneezes? An older person may feel disrespected if a much younger person calls them by their first name, yet some older people may not find this disrespectful. However, regardless of our personal interpretation of respect all of us can show respect. We can listen carefully and attentively to another’s point of view without interrupting; wait patiently for others; speak well of others; resist the temptation to criticize remembering that we also have faults and failings, or giving and caring without expecting something in return.

How about a respect check – am I being respectful? How will what I am about to say or do make that person feel? Will it in-voke a positive response/reaction, or will it lower their self-esteem, embarrass or harm them in any way?

Respect is indeed a noble sentiment. The highest levels of respect are always earned, never simply given. This is true of self-respect as well as respect for others. Before awarding the highest level of respect to another, it is important that the person is worthy of the honour.

“Respect for ourselves guides our morals; respect for others guides our manners” Laurence Steine

God bless

Congratulations to all the students for their outstanding efforts in the school Cross Country on Thursday 23rd May. It was pleasing to see so many students putting in their best efforts, as well as the great sportsmanship shown by cheering on all

participants and congratulating each other as they crossed the finish line.

Below is a special mention to the students who were presented with ribbons after the event;

Pre-Primary – Year 2

Year 3 – Year 6

Well done to GOLD FACTION who won the shield. They are the first faction to beat Green since the shield was

introduced in 2016.

At the beginning of next term, I will be forming a team of Years 3-6 to compete at the Interschool Cross Country.
