    WORDS OF ADVICE

❖   “Remember the reason you are here. Go to class, be productive and take advantage of the position

you are in. Embrace all the fun, the hard work, the late nights and early mornings, because it will beover in the blink of an eye. Take pride in yourself and be responsible for all the decisions you make.

College is going to be as ‘turnt’ as you want it to be plus some. Undergrad only come once.

Goodluck!” - Taylor Pass, Morgan State University: Bachelor of Arts in Sociology

❖   “Trust your heart! Choose the course of study that interests and inspires you, and throw yourself into

it. Don’t choose a path merely because it satisfies the expectations of others, or because it seems

prudent. You’re a good kid, take a chance on yourself. Do not look at college as preparation for life.

Prepare yourself to be a good person. Be studious, but also make time for leisure and socializing.

Do your homework and finish your assignments on time.” - Melissa Stephenson, Georgia

Gwinnett College: Bachelor of Science in Psychology

❖   “Commit to college, meaning don’t go home every weekend. Involve yourself in your college

organizations and give back to your college community. Network and build your own friends andnetwork while in college because some of the people you meet will become some of the people that

you’ll call family and keep in contact with for the rest of your life.” - Sakeidra Mitchell, Georgia

Southern University: Bachelor of Science in Child and Family Development

❖   “Have as much fun in college and do everything you possibly can as an undergrad. However, be

able to separate the two and maintain your grades to stay in college. Don’t get easily influenced

because there are a lot of distractions in college, but you have to be strong enough not to fall victim

to the negative things your peers have going on. Don’t give up! Finish what you start and get the

degree no matter how hard it is.” - Dexter Davis, Valdosta State University: Bachelor of Fine

    Arts in Mass Media

❖   “Going to college can be scary. Keep God involved in your life. Get yourself involved around

campus. An idle mind is the devil's workshop, so staying busy helps keep you focused on the right

things.” - Ya’Kera Floyd, University of West Georgia: Bachelor of Business Administration

    in Management Information System

❖   “Prepare yourself mentally for college because it’s not an easy journey. Prepare yourself to adjust to

diversity and make the most of it. Get to know people who don’t identify with you and learn from

them as they learn from you. After graduation, you can take your experience and apply it to your

education to make a powerful impact on the world.” - Vivian Botley, University of Georgia:

Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences

❖   “Always keep God first and turn to him when you feel like giving up. Tough times will come but

never give up! Reach beyond your goals and be great.” - Alexis Binns, Augusta University:

    Bachelor of Science in Nursing

❖   “Always go to class! Even if it kills you go to class, let your teachers know you’re there and show

them you do care about whether or not you pass. And it’s okay to have fun, but keep your grades asyour number one priority.” - Breland Mitchell, Georgia Southern University: Bachelor of

Science in Child and Family Development

❖   “Stay focused and pay attention to scholarships and grants. Be careful with student loans. If you can

avoid them do so. Also get work, volunteer and internship experience. Having experience in your

field makes you more marketable.” - Ashley Kenney, Georgia State University: Bachelor of

    Arts in Journalism

❖   “This is the time to experience the good, bad and the ugly but ultimately the time to learn most about

yourself. Enjoy and have fun but always remember you are there to get your degree. And your

degree should be your final outcome after your 4 years.” - Rosa Powell, Erskine College:

    Bachelor of Science in Biology

❖   “Enjoy your time in undergrad it goes by really quick. If you can help it don’t work your way through

school because it’s such a distraction. Be involved in everything! Make friends your first year, they’ll

be your lifesavers at times. Stay focused and pray!” - Jordan Connor, Georgia State University:

    Bachelor of Arts in Journalism

❖   “Don’t go into college feeling like you have everything figured out. College is where you learn who

you are. Don’t be afraid to change majors, take the courses that interest you even though they may

have nothing to do with your major. Enjoy every second of it!” - Prentiss Guillory, Georgia

Southern University: Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts

❖   “Be selfish! Use the next four years of your life to focus solely on yourself. Use that time to grow and

find out who you are as a person. College is totally different from high school. You’re about to

experience something you’ve never experienced before.” - Terron Latimore, Georgia State

University: Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a Pre-Law Concentration, Law Student at

    Charlotte School of Law

❖   “You are the one pivotal person in charge of your future. Do not conform to what everyone else isdoing. Take different classes and find the one that sparks your mind. As a matter of fact, I highly

encourage to enroll with an undeclared major. Go explore! The world is yours. Stay focused! Be

great!” - Anissa McIntosh, Georgia Gwinnett College: Bachelor of Science in Psychology,

Brenau University: Pursuing Master of Science in Clinical Counseling Psychology

❖   “I would advise them to start off working really hard because it is not easy or fun to try to catch up

later. I would recommend really looking at your options before just diving into a program. Make sure

what you go to school for is something that you will enjoy and you’re not just going because that

career path will make a lot of money. Always do your best and no matter how tired you get of school

never quit.” - Brent Miller, University of Georgia: Bachelor of Science in Education. Exercise

    and Sport Science

❖   “Never compare yourself to others because finding your path takes time. It’s very easy to get caughtup but making sure to remember who you are will keep you grounded.” - Katherine Randolph,

Georgia State University: Bachelor of Arts in Economics

❖   “Time management is key! You have to learn to balance your class schedule, study time, extra

curricular activities, time to eat and sleep, and exercise. It is also important to network. Create good

relationships with fellow classmates as well as your professors.” - Alesha Smith, Xavier

University of Louisiana: Bachelor of Science in Political Science

❖   “Have fun, but stay on top of your work. Get to know people that have the same major as you or that

is majoring in a field similar to yours. And also if you’re a female be careful of your surroundings and

where you go.” - Jeffrey Burton, Gordon State College: Associate of Science Degree with a

    Physical Education Concentration

❖   “College is a time for personal development - a time where you really learn yourself. Be greedy with

you education. Get into any and everything you can because finding out what you don’t like to do

can sometimes be even more valuable than discovering what you like doing.” - Alicia Whetstone,

University of Memphis: Bachelor of Science in Psychology

❖   “Do not get overwhelmed and over think things. It’s going to seem a bit hectic at first but a

planner/calendar will make your entire college experience a lot easier. Have your schedule laid out

so that everything is done in a timely manner. Once you have made every deadline, you’re on your

way to a very smooth and successful.” - Kendra Smith, University of West Georgia: Bachelor

University: Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, Augusta University: Master of Business

    Administration

❖   “Use your time wisely. College can be a fun experience but your priorities must be in place. Keep a

small circle of friends who have the same ambitious attitude towards school and goals as you do.

Be true to yourself and stand up for you to believe in. Be a leader not a follower.” - Cameron

Prather, Albany State University: Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education

❖   “Take your time! Don’t rush through college at the same tempo as high school. Soak up every

moment. College is exciting, creepy, interesting and liberating all at once. It can be overwhelming at

first, but once you find your tempo, you’ll be unstoppable. And that’s the beauty of it. So relax, take

a deep breath and start your new journey with an open mind, a goal at hand and success in your

heart.” - Taylor Morrell, Valdosta State University: Bachelor of Fine Arts in Mass Media

❖   “Always remember your main goal throughout college which is your degree because you can easily

get distracted by other things. Just enjoy the college life but also make decisions based off of what

you want in the future for yourself. Always handle your business, be organized, meet new people

and make smart decisions.” - Aja Sorrells, Marshall University: Bachelor of Business

so much more to you if you just follow those two rules.” - Mallory Fannin, Georgia Southern

University: Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education

❖   “Never lose sight of the end goal. There’s always gonna be somebody that wants to see you fail but

as long as you focus on why you’re there and what you want to become, success will follow. Hard

work never goes unnoticed.” - Aviana Pearl, Valdosta State University: Bachelor of Science in

    Education. Middle Grades Education

❖   “Remember what you came to school for and don’t get distracted from the freedom of your parents

Sleep and Study. Definitely get to know your professors really well. Learn the importance of building

and maintaining friendships with people. Try to get involved as much as possible on campus.Step

out of your comfort zone. Prioritize and just remember the real reason why you’re there, ‘to get an

education’. - Alandra White, Paine College: Bachelor of Arts in Communications

❖   “Manage your time wisely. Be sure to prioritize assignments and find a balance between academics

your interests. It’s important to make those connections early.” - Keyanna English, Georgia

Southern University: Bachelor of Science in Psychology

❖   “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to not be a procrastinator! College isn’t like high school, you have

be easy as long as you stay focused.” - Jenise Burgess, Valdosta State University: Pursuing

Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice

    ❖   “Take advantage of the resources that are available on campus. Anything from academic resources;

such as tutoring and study groups, to social networking resources; sororities & fraternities. A holistic

college experience entails being active on campus. Make sure you get good grades also. Go to your

Georgia Southern University: Bachelor of Science in Public Health, Kennesaw State

University: Pursuing Master of Science in Biology

❖   “Stay focused & stay positive! There are times to party, but don’t let the partying come before work.

Smith, Gordon State College: Pursuing Bachelor of Science in Human Services

❖   “You are in the direction of doing something that you really want to do, even if you don’t know what

a doubt, determine your future and do what you love!” - Tanisha Kishan, University of Georgia:

Bachelor of Science in Education. Early Childhood Education

❖   “Know exactly what you want to major in. Because if you keep switching majors your first couple of

years you’re going to be wasting a lot of unnecessary time and money. Try to find out what you

Have a vision and figure out your identity. Are you more of a corporate job type of person or a

owning your own business type of person?” - Ryan Davis, Gordon State College: Associate of

❖   “Remember your purpose and fulfill that purpose. Although you will not have your parents

supervising you, continue to uphold those values that were instilled in you. College forces

seventeen and eighteen year olds to become independent while challenging your morals and

pressuring you to constantly make ethical decisions. Make educated decisions; every decision you

make has a consequence that will affect your life positively or negatively. Additionally, join student

organizations on your campus. Being active within your college community is a great way to make

friends and network. Networking with your professors and peers is essential to all college students

because it opens doors for your future. Remember, work hard, stay focused and network! Good luck

are plenty of resources here to help you be the best person you can be. Always go to class!” -

Sumaya Raphael, Georgia Southern University: Bachelor of Science in Public Health

❖   “Stay focused! There is nothing wrong with partying and hanging out but remember what you are

there for. There is a time to play and there is a time to crack down and get in them books. Your goal

is to graduate and don't let anyone steer you from that. Believe in yourself or nobody else will.” -

Jade Willis, Gordon State College: Bachelor of Science in Nursing

❖   “College is a learning experience not just academically but spiritually, mentally, and physically. It

allows you to grow in so many ways you never knew where possible. By going to college you will

have access to many opportunities to become successful in your career as well as in your everydaylife. Just remember there's no right or wrong way in college, everything is a learning experience.

And Always remember to strive towards your dreams.” - Kristolyn Long, Albany State

University: Pursuing Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication with Concentration in

    Journalism

❖   “Never be too hard on yourself. Never be afraid to do what makes you happy out of fear you'll

disappoint somebody. Always stay true to yourself. Find a solid support system, whether it's one

good friend , or a student organization. It makes a difference!” - Joi Jones, Buffalo State:

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, University of Georgia: Pursuing Master of Social Work

❖   “Every day will be a challenge. Wake up knowing you will give it your all. During the day, learn

more step closer to accomplishing your dreams.” - Terry Dotson, University of North Georgia:

Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing

❖   “Don't be shy. Introduce yourself to others especially the ones in the same field as you. You never

know who could provide advice or become an important partner when networking.” - Spencer

Dykes, Georgia Gwinnett College: Pursuing Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science

❖   “Stay Focused! Don’t give up on your dreams. It’s going to get hard and be rough in the beginning,

but all of it will pay off in the end. You have to stay down until you come up.” - Whitney Arnold,

❖   “Find ways to stay motivated about whatever. Each year of college is going to be different with ups

& downs and all types of life situations. Believe that you are able to eradicate & create new goals of

success & happiness for yourself. Don't place yourself in a box for any reason: financially, spiritually

or educationally. Keep going!” - Valencia Reid, Georgia State University: Bachelor of Arts in

Public Relations with a Concentration in Pre-Law

and you will always succeed. Never lose faith in yourself. Keep pushing the finish line is closer than

you can reach.” - Brittany Flanagan, Kennesaw State University: Bachelor of Science in

    Human Services

❖   “Go in with no distractions. For example having a job, eliminating unnecessary relationships and

anything that can hinder you from being 100% focus in your first year. Because a lot of freshmen

come to college and flunk out because of them being distracted. Secondly I would say to learn how

to develop good study habits. Because you want your grades to be the best especially your first

year. The first year is your foundation to your whole college experience and grades. Lastly I would

say to come to college with an open mind. There are so many different people, cultures, and

learning opportunities in college. Many time freshman's are still learning who they are and being

exposed to different things can hope mold you into that successful person you want to be.” -

Travere Wilson, Clayton State University: Bachelor of Arts in Communications ❖   “Pray for clarity, remain focus on what you're in college for, find your purpose, build relationships,

have fun, maintain B average, challenge yourself, get uncomfortable (come out your comfort zone),

continue to pray and study.” - Tenathe Lane, Gwinnett Technical College: Pursuing Associate

    Degree in Nursing

❖   “Participate in things that force you out of your comfort zone. In high school, I'm sure you hung out

with people who were very similar to you. Diversity is deeper than skin color and the beauty of

college is that you are given an opportunity to expand your horizon. The world isn't supposed to be

black & white and neither is your college experience - explore the gray area.” - Teara Mayfield,

Georgia State University: Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing

❖   “Network, network, network! Make sure that you utilize every resource that is offered to you on

campus because it’s those resources that will benefit you in the long run. Networking is very vital inyour college years as you are beginning to prepare yourself to start your career and the more you

have invested in in your college years will most definitely help you once you graduate!” - Tamara

Taylor, Georgia Southern University: Bachelor of Science in Sociology, Pursuing Master of

Education in Counselor Education with a Concentration in Clinical Mental Health

❖   “In college you have a little bit more freedom but don't let that keep you from continuing to work hard

and do well in your classes. You need to train yourself because not every professor can or will keep

you accountable with turning in your assignments and studying for your exams. Your hard work and

self-discipline will pay off in the end when the next chapter in life comes around after graduation.” -

Blake DiSpigna, Georgia Gwinnett College: Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science

❖   “Focus and time management is key! College is nothing like high school when you can get away

with out studying and just procrastinating everything. To make it through college to receive that

degree and good GPA you need to focus and give your undivided attention to each class. Sitting in

the front row helps a lot. Try to get all your assignments done before the due date so you won't have

to stress about homework being due and especially when final exams come around.” -

Georgeanna Young, Georgia State University: Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Pursuing

    Master of Public Health

❖   “Go into it with a want. Focus on what's important, you went to school to graduate therefore don't let

nothing or anybody stop that. Never let trials & tribulations deter you from finishing what you

started...practice resilience! last but not least it has been said that birds of a feather flock together...

If you want to be successful in college associate yourself with other successful peers who will

motivate you to be successful in whatever you do.” - Ebony Lewis, Georgia Southern

University: Bachelor of Science in Education and Child and Family Development, Master

    of Education in Counselor Education

❖   “College is a journey , a journey to find yourself . Take your time to embrace the fact that you are a

educated young individual . You are capable of doing anything you want. You have to be able to

understand and see who you truly are in order to finish successfully. With that being said , be true to

yourself and chase after your dreams and college will be just another accomplishment of yours.” -

Kourtney Barnett, Piedmont College: Pursuing Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood

    Education

❖   “Stay focused! Never give up, and remember your motivation, the initial reason you chose to attend

college. Keep God first and choose the path that makes you happy. It's pre-adulthood so be sure

the choices you make won't hinder you in the long run. Have fun, but also be responsible. The sky's

the limit!” - Shericka Smith, Georgia Southern University: Bachelor of Science in Criminal

Justice ❖   “Stay focused! I got so sidetracked because you're out on your own, experiencing different things,

meeting new people, finding out who you are as a person. Although those things are key and very

important in having a great college experience, you can get so wrapped up in the fast-paced

environment and lose focus on the initial goal and that's finishing school. You have to find that

balance. Party hard, study 10 times harder.” - Delecia Jackson, Georgia State University:

Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice

❖   “Make college the best time of your life! Manage your time to achieve your goals, explore your

passions and build relationships. Don’t waste valuable time on people and/or things that don’t help

you get where you want to be.” - Ericka Brundage, Georgia Institute of Technology:

Bachelor’s in History, Technology, and Society

❖   “Take advantage of all the resources and opportunities that any college campus can offer you. Fromtutoring, to student organizations, to student organizations, to on-campus jobs. Make the college

campus your ‘home’. It will make the college experience so much easier if a student really invests

themselves in the full experience. Several different ways to be successful, just have to find the right

route for you.” - Kandyce Reeves, Georgia Southern University: Bachelor of Science in

Biology, Master in Public Health with a Concentration in Community Health

❖   “Don’t rush the process! Live in the moment. Take time to actually be present in all that college has

to offer whether it's making friends or joining clubs. Keep the finish line in mind. Remember why you

are really going to college, to get a degree. Always keep that in mind!” - Sekita Redding, Georgia

Southern University: Bachelor of Science in Child and Family Development

❖   “College is a journey that highlights a pathway to your future. Be bold, be courageous, and know

who are going in so no one detours you away from your values. Be willing to meet new people and

try new things that are out of the norm. Build knowledge, empower others, and create bonds that will

last a lifetime. College is an opportunity to develop and expand what is already inside of you! Now

go and change the world!” - Arissa Camp, Georgia State University: Bachelor of Science in

    Education

❖   “Develop good study habits and make the most of any free time. Stay grounded! Be sure to always

put your studies first and stay connected with family and any other support system you may have.

STUDYING TIPS ● Don't try to do all your studying the night before the test. Instead space out your studying, review

class materials at least several times a week, focusing on one topic at a time.

    ● Have all of your study material in front of you: lecture notes, course textbooks, study guides and any

    other relevant material.

    ● Find a comfortable and quiet place to study with good lighting and little distractions (try avoiding

your own bed; it is very tempting to just lie down and take a nap).

    ● Take notes and write down a summary of the important ideas as you read through your study

    material.

    ● Take short breaks frequently. Your memory retains the information that you study at the beginning

and the end better than what you study in the middle.

    ● Space out your studying, you'll learn more by studying a little every day instead of waiting to cram at

the last minute. By studying every day, the material will stay in your long-term memory but if you try

to study at the last moment, the material will only reside in your short-term memory that you'll easily

    forget.

    ● If you choose to study in a group, only study with others who are serious about the test.

    ● Test yourself or have someone test you on the material to find out what your weak and strong areasare. You can use the review questions at the end of each chapter, practice tests that the teacher

may give out or other pertinent materials.

    ● Listening to relaxing music such as classical or jazz on a low volume can relieve some of the

    boredom of studying.

A BLESSINGMay the places you go be blessed, and may you bring the blessing…

May your feet bring the peace already hidden in your heart…

May your hands always create, and never tear down…

May your mind be sharpened by experience and thought,

But never too dull to learn…

May your heart be full, but always have room…

May your eyes be open for opportunities, but not only for yourself…

May your words bring healing to a broken world,

And your ears listen for the sign of hope…

May you forgive, and never forget you were once forgiven…

May you love, and never forget that you are loved…

May you strive to do right, and admit wrong…

May you praise others, and not yourself…

May you speak well, but not forget how to listen…

May you have enough success to be confident, and enough failure to be humble…

May you choose to be a blessing, and not to be blessed…

This is your charge. This is what you’ve learned.

    Pay attention.

Be courage for those that have none.

Remember that who you are will always matter than what you do.

And never forget that home is just another word for friends, and that you will always have those here.

     Amen.
