    1) PLACE VALUE -

    The digits of a number express the values of their own when the number is given in expanded

    form and read in words. The value of a digit when expressed in expanded form of the number

    is called its place value in the number.

    Example 1-

    Find the place value of the underlined digit in the number 645.

    Solution –

    H T O The place value of 4 = ( 4 × 10 ) = 40

    Children you all know that there are 26 letters in the English alphabet.The letter a , e , i , o , u are called Vowels and the remaining 21 letters are called Consonants.LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

    The word ‘A’ ‘An’ ‘The’ are called Articles. There are two kinds of Articles

    i) Indefinite articles i.e ‘a’ & ‘an’. They are indefinite articles as they do not refer to any particular person, place, animal or thing.Example: a) This is a pen. b) John took an umbrella.

    ii) Definite article i.e. ‘the’. It is a definite article as it points out a particular person , place, animal or thing.Example: a) The sun rise in the east. b) The Bible is a holy book of the Christian.

    ‘A’ is used before a word begins with a consonant sound. example- a boy, a woman, a house, etc

    ‘An’ is used before a word begins with a vowel sound. example-an enemy, an orange, an umbrella, etc

    Similarly example-a one-rupee note, a one-eyed man. We use ‘a’ before the word starts with ‘one’ because it begins with a consonant sound ‘w’.

    Again words like university, union, etc begin with a consonant sound ‘yu’ we use ‘a’ before it.

    An is used before a word starts with a vowel sound. example- an honest, an historic, etc Do revise the following exercises given below:
