T he I Have a Dream® Foundation of Boulder County has selected Magis- trate Tijani Cole as the 2001 Dream-maker Award winner. He will be honored at IHAD’s benefit luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 7, 2001. The luncheon will be held at the University of Colorado Presi- dent's Residence, and will feature Elizabeth Hoffman, CU President, as the keynote speaker. Mitch Jelniker of News7 will be the Master of Ceremonies. Ronald D. Jung and Nanette Schunk are co-chairs for the event. Individual tickets are $50, and corpo- rate tables are $1,250. The First National Bank of Colorado and Debbie Lane are participating as "Dream- builder" underwriters of the event. The Daily Camera and Carrabba's Italian Grill are providing advertising and catering, respectively, as in-kind donors. In addition to performing his duties as magistrate in juvenile court in Boulder Dis- trict Court, Magistrate Cole has made a number of significant contributions to our community. He founded Boulder Prep, a Charter School that targets young people in- volved in the justice system. For this work he received a citation from Governor Roy Romer in 1997. In his spare time, Magistrate Cole has offered help with homework, rec- ommended colleges and given advice on every day problems to a group of low-income students in a north Denver neighborhood. Magistrate Cole has proven to be the kind of man that finds it impossible to turn his back on promising young people. Cole has received a number of awards recognizing his outstanding service to the youth of Metro-Denver and Boulder including the "Beyond the Gavel" award in 1998, and the Channel 9 those "Who Care" award in 1997. Mag- istrate Cole has taken his support of young people to a level of commitment that few can surpass; giving of his time, his expertise, his caring, and his financial support in the form of tuition assistance. Cole helps to build dreams and always maintains very high expectations of even the most challenged young people. High expectations are just what the I Have A Dream® Foundation founder Eugene Lang had in mind when he de- veloped this organization. In 1981, while addressing a class of sixth grade students at his alma mater in Harlem, he promised to provide a college scholarship for each child present who remained in school and completed their high school education. Today, in Boulder County, the I Have A Dream® Foundation is ensuring that nearly 300 students have the chance to fulfill the dream of a college education. From Longmont, to Lafayette, to Boulder, low-income students are "adopted" in elementary school by the Foundation and offered tutoring, mentoring and long-term academic support services designed to ensure a successful educational experience. The Foundation is typically able to double the ex- pected high school graduation rates of the low-income children who enter the program. Nancy Botiller joined the IHAD Board in January 2001 and is an Area Operations Director for Kaiser Perma-nente in Boulder County. She is responsible for the medical service delivery in Boulder, Longmont, and Broom-field. She started her career in healthcare as a physical therapist and practiced for 13 years before entering health-care administration. Nancy’s involvement in the community includes serving as a tutor for 3 years at Whittier Elementary School in Denver and teaching personal finance to middle school classes for Junior Achievement. She is a leader in the planning of a community health fair for Kaiser Permanente, "Veccinos De Salud"; where health screening is provided for the uninsured. "My life has been greatly influenced by the support I had in my education, so I have a passion to help others in their educational pursuits." Anita Mandelbaum was elected to the IHAD Board in June 2001. Anita is a CPA and retired tax partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers. She recently relocated to Boulder from Washington, DC, but spent the majority of her

adult life in Des Moines, Iowa, serving as the Tax Partner in charge of the Des Moines office of Coopers & Lybrand. Anita was actively involved in the Des Moines business, professional, state government and non-profit communities, serving on numerous boards and task forces in a variety of capacities. She was honored as "Woman of the Year" by the Des Moines YWCA, the Iowa Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and the Des Moines Chamber of Commerce Small Business Committee. "Now that I am retiring, I will have time to do things I did not have time to do before, including giving of myself as a volunteer. But I want to be very selective about how this time is spent, and my preliminary "research" indicates that the I Have a Dream® Foundation is an organization where I would like to dedicate a good

bit of my volunteer energy."

Sponsor Recruitment Event a Success

The I Have a Dream® Foundation of Boulder County hosted the first Department of Justice funded Sponsor Recruitment Workshop on April 25, 2001. Thirty-four people attended the session, held at the University Club on the CU-Boulder campus. The event featured presen-tations by and discussions with national and local staff and Sponsors as well as testimonials from two Dreamers and a Dreamer parent. As a result of this workshop, two couples have expressed interest to begin the process of sponsoring a new class, and two other individuals have indicated an interest in a site visit and board member-ship. Special thanks to Mario Fresquez, and Stephani and Andrea Oscarson for sharing their experiences at this heartwarming event.

Dreamer Day is a special event on the University of Colorado Campus for our middle school and high school aged Dreamers. At this year’s event on June 21st, Dreamers were given information on college admissions, the application process, and were fortunate enough to have a Latino CU student share his experiences at the University. They were also given a tour of campus, in-cluding a visit to the Heritage Center. It was a wonderful and informative day for all involved. We would like to thank the University of Colorado and especially Clint Bell from the Office of Admissions for hosting our Dreamer Day event.

Dreamers Prepare for College at CU Dreamer Day

A year ago, we celebrated the graduation of a large group of Lafayette Dreamers. This spring we are proud to announce that Janine Brunetti and Carolyn McDowell have completed their GED’s, and Nicole Hoffman has earned her high school diploma. All three report that they plan to begin college classes this fall! Francisco Bustamante and Xang Yang both received their vocational certificates from Boulder Valley Technical Program. With the addition of these recent graduates, the Lafayette Class has 55 Dreamer graduates – 87% of the Class! A special thanks and farewell go out to Lafayette Project Coordinator, Heather Solar, who provided guidance and encouragement for all our Lafayette Dreamers during the past six months.

Friday Afternoon Club Activities Friday Afternoon Club (FAC) activities have allowed for posi-tive connections with Broadway Dreamers beyond their academic efforts and the regular after-school program protocol. IHAD has been fortunate to receive services from the City of Boulder’s Parks & Recreation and Housing Authority for some FAC activ i-ties. Through these partnerships, Dreamers have been able to utilize the city’s recreation center facilities for various sport ac-tivities - swimming is the most popular! Recent FAC activities have included bowling and ice skating at CU, arts & crafts and a special community service day at community gardens in which the Dreamers helped weed in exchange for painting and planting pots for mother’s day gifts. Dreamers gather on the CU-Boulder campus after attending a

“Kids in Space” presentation at Fiske Planetarium during Spring Break

Dreamers Learn about Mother Nature

Broadway Dreamers took part in the Earth Day Celebration at the Farmers Market. The Dreamers learned how to better protect the earth and the environment at the informational booths and presentations at this event. The Dreamers applied this new knowledge a few days later when they helped tilt soil in order to get ready for the planting season for the Cultiva Youth Project.

Summer 2001 Here at the Broadway Center, we are happy to see our Dreamers successfully complete another year of school. Be-cause of their hard work in their academics, we are organiz-ing a summer full of activities and field trips. After attending summer classes in literature, poetry, computers and art, Dreamers will be rewarded with trips to Elitches and Water World. Dreamers are also scheduled to attend two camp-ing trips, one of which includes a full day of white-water river rafting. IHAD is also helping Dreamers attend several classes and camps this summer including the Little Dribblers Basket-ball Camp, Nova Soccer League Camp, Frequent Flyers, and the Latina Girls Wilderness Program. As you can see, it will be a very busy summer for the Broadway Dreamers!

Gabriel Granillo, an 8th grader at Casey Middle School, received special rec-ognition for maintaining a 4.0 GPA for most of the school year. According to his teach-ers, Gabriel continues to show excellent effort and ability on all of his work. Keep up the good work Gabriel!

Patricio Rodriquez, Janelly Cruz, Oscar Ponce, Mario Granillo and Gabriel Granillo made the honor roll for the fourth quarter. Congratulations to all of these Dreamers!

Ramon Arredondo’s positive attitude and enthusiastic work ethic has encouraged other Dreamers, including his younger brother, to follow his example. As a seventh grader at Sunset Middle School, Ramon consistently earned good grades and especially enjoyed geography class. One of his dreams is to travel to Ita ly and test drive a Ferrari. In the meantime, he is busy with school, sports, and family. Ramon confidently approaches every task in life--whether it be a soccer game, a math test, or a sticky social situation--with determination and a fabulous smile. With this attitude, the future could hold nothing but success and fast Ferraris for this bright young man.

Longmont’s first summer program began on June 18th and will run until August 10th. Longmont Dreamers will be keeping their academic minds active through different daily and weekly activities. The 4-H youth and livestock group will be doing several science and nature type ac-tivities, and Dottie, “the Art Lady” as we call her, will help inspire the Dreamers to be artists and tap into their creativity. Dreamers will work on and publish their own newsletter, learn about the earth and environment, and learn about music and culture of other parts of the world. In between all these fun filled days, we will journey into the city to Six Flags Elitch Gardens, Water World, the Museum of Natural Science and the Imax Theater. Last but not least, our younger Dreamers (2nd-4th graders) will experience their first night of camping with the WOW organization. This should be a night to remem-ber. Summer is here…let the fun begin!

Summer Days

Longmont Adventures During Friday Afternoon Clubs, Longmont Dreamers have enjoyed wild game days, creative art projects, monthly birthday celebrations, a play from the Drama-Rama Youth Theater, and an imaginative exercise where Dreamers turned their community room into a restau-rant! This spring, almost all the Dreamers reached their educational goals. Therefore, we had a high level of par-ticipation in our exciting Incentive Field Trips. For the Martin Luther King Celebration, we took a trip to Boul-der’s Public Library where Dreamers were able to see local youth groups perform. Dreamers have visited CU-Boulder on several occasions for an ice-skating party, a basketball game, “Stars and Lasers” show, and the Mul-ticultural Literacy Festival. In addition, we took trips to a bowling alley, Laser Storm, a movie, roller skating and went on a picnic at Chautauqua Park.

Spring Break Happenings During Spring Break, Lafayette Dreamers enjoyed seeing the Kids in Space Presentation at the CU Fiske Plane-tarium and a trip to Dairy Queen for a blizzard covered with their favorite topping. Pridemark Paramedics intro-duced Dreamers to procedures on an ambulance and told them what EMS personnel do during an ambulance ride. They got a chance to see a fellow student strapped to a backboard as well. Of course, listening to the lights and sirens was the best part of the presentation. The students also enjoyed a bowling outing, many for the first time. Dreamers eagerly answered yes to a second game before walking to McDonald’s for lunch and a tour.

Wal-Mart Helps I Have a Dream® IHAD would like to thank Wal-Mart’s managers Jeff Hartman and April Manzanares for organizing their Spring Garden Department fundraiser this year for our organization. Lafayette Dreamers and parents sold hot dogs, coke and chips to raise $600 to go towards a summer trip to Elitches. AmeriCorps members recruited community members to become volunteers for IHAD. Special thanks to Coke and Frito-Lay for donating their products and to Sandy Nel-son, Mariah Trenary, Laura Garcia, Ivan Garcia, Reyna Gonzales, Lenny Bueno, Javier Bonila, Big Jesse Young and Vicky Vega who volunteered their time to help during this successful three day event.

The week after school let out, girls from the Lafayette class attended a technology class sponsored by the YWCA. Dreamers were paired with professional women as their e-mail mentors, learned how to search on the internet, and made their own cards through Blue Mountain Cards. The week ended with a trip to Collage Museum and a pizza party. Thank you to Michele, Alison and Sara for coordi-nating a great technology week.

Angel Torres, a Kalmia Dreamer deserves to be recognized for all of his hard work this past school year. This Sojourner Middle schooler has com-pleted 6th and 7th grade in one year! Starting in September, Angel will be-gin 8th grade. Throughout the year An-gel received some tutorial help, but self-motivation has been Angel’s big-

gest helper. Andy Bachmann, Angel’s mentor has also been key in providing support to one of our star Dream-ers! Good jobs guys- keep up the good work!

Kalmia Dreamers have an opportunity to join in many activities throughout the summer months. A BCN computer class will be offered on Monday and Thursday evenings to Kalmia and Broadway Dreamers. Tuesday afternoons are reserved for hiking trips and community activities. Every Wednesday night the Kalmia center will be open from 5-8 for teen night. On Fridays we will go on field trips. Trips that are planned include Water World, Elitches and an overnight camp out with white water rafting. We always welcome your participation in any of our activities. Enjoy your summer!

Summer Fun for Kalmia Dreamers

Kalmia Dreamers were very busy over Spring Break. Several Dreamers took the opportu-nity to spend a day with a professional in their field of interest and participated in the following job shadows: Armando Avila - Roche Colorado; Daisy Navarro - Pioneer Elementary School; Bash Preston - Cisco Sys-tems; Mayra Carranza - Pridemark EMT; Terry Shoemaker & Angel Torres - Rockynet/Neonet; and Megan Vasquez - Valleylab. In addition, Kalmia Dreamers spent a day in Denver helping build a house for Habitat for Humanity. Thanks for giving back Kalmia Dreamers!

Kalmia Dreamers Participate in Job Shadows and Give Back to

their Community

Now that school is over and summer has started many Dreamers will begin summer jobs. After a day of interviewing on June 11th, six Kalmia Dreamers were selected to participate in the CU Summer Internship Program. Other Kalmia Dreamers have found rewarding work as well:

? Megan Vasquez—CU Transportation Department ? Armando Avila—CU Genetics Department and CU Transportation Department ? Angelica Ramirez—CU Communications Department ? Raquel Lepure—CU Student Academic Services Department ? Josh Terranova—CU Bursar’s Office ? Robbie Morris—CU Bursar’s Office ? Bash Preston—Fresh Water Software ? Mike Drieth—Camelot Music ? Jackie Jiminez—Babysitting

We would like to thank the CU–Office of Diversity and Equity and especially Susan Martinez for her support in organizing the CU internship program.

CU-Boulder has selected the I Have a Dream® Foundation of Boulder County as its first America Reads pilot site by providing work-study students to tutor Dreamers in literacy and math. America Reads was a grassroots national campaign started in 1995, which challenged every American to help children learn to read and reach a competent level in mathematics. To assist with the effort, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley issued a waiver to the Fed-eral Work-Study (FWS) regulations that allowed the Federal Government to pay 100% of eligible FWS students’ wages if they serve as a tutor to preschool through elementary age children. We feel fortunate to be part of this initia-tive and want to welcome our new America Reads employees. Thank you for your commitment to teaching the youth of tomorrow.

Heribierto Crespo, Ramon Arredondo, Jessica Lopez, Flor Rodriguez, Elizabeth Vasquez, Jose Friare, Olga Arredondo, and Josephina Raygoza all participated in a Climbing For Life rock-climbing adventure in Gregory Canyon pushing their physical and mental limits. The Dreamers learned how to trust each other and themselves while learning how to climb rocks. They learned how to belay each other, tie figure eight knots and learned how to be safe on the rocks. In fact, they did such a good job that on the second day the Dreamers from Saturday taught the new Dreamers how to put their harnesses on, tie their knots, and how to belay. It was a great success to see the Dreamers so involved with their peers. Long-mont Dreamers Ramon and Heribierto were so excited about the program that they attended three additional climbing adventures. We hope that they will have the opportunity to continue their interest in rock climbing and that they will continue to be strong leaders in their futures.

Climbing For Life

National Volunteer Week was April 23rd. In appreciation of all the hard work and time our 135 volun-teers give to IHAD, we held a couple of different events. For the Broadway and Kalmia volunteers, Dreamers and their tutors and mentors headed over to Gateway Fun Park and enjoyed pizza, go-cart rides and miniature golf. On April 27th, we held a BBQ for Longmont volunteers. The gathering was a huge success culminating with a water balloon fight. Each volunteer was given a picture of their Dreamer and themselves to take home in memory of their experience. On April 21st, Lafayette held a scavenger hunt for their Dreamers and volunteers. A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL IHAD VOLUNTEERS!

Dreamer Receives Scholarship from Association of Computing Machinery

Thanks to a generous donation from the Boulder Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the I Have a Dream® Foundation of Boulder County has awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Boulder Class Dreamer, Theexa Vue. Theexa is currently a senior at Westwood College in Denver majoring in Electronic Engineering Tech-nology with an emphasis in Computer Technology. Founded in 1947, ACM is the world's first educational and scien-tific computing society. The Boulder Chapter provided this scholarship opportunity specifically for a qualified Dreamer engaged in the study of computer related technology. Congratulation to Theexa!

Lasso Lafayette Fundraiser We are proud to report that IHAD will receive $1,900 from the proceeds of this City of Lafayette annual event. Nine parents and staff enjoyed the event thanks to the generos-ity of Dianne Ladd and Debbie Lane. All en-joyed dinner, music and a silent auction.

Diamonds & Spurs Benefit a Huge Success

Every year, the Boulder Valley Rotary Club holds the Diamonds & Spurs fundraising gala to benefit sev-eral area nonprofit organizations. This year the I Have a Dream® Foundation of Boulder County was cho-sen as one of two organizations receiving support from this event. The event, held at the netLibrary facility in mid-May, was a huge success. With nearly 400 people in attendance, the event featured a live and si-lent auction with over 100 pieces of local art, a delectable buffet, an open bar, and live music for dancing. Thanks to a tremendous effort by the IHAD Board of Directors, who sold over 60 tickets to the event, IHAD will receive close to $15,000 in proceeds. On behalf of everyone at IHAD, thank you to the Boulder Valley Rotary Club and to all those who attended. See you next year!

IHAD is looking for mentors for our Dreamers. Make the differ-ence in the life of a child and have a great time. Just four hours a month can make a dif-ference in life of tomorrow’s youth. Pass down what you have to share for generations to come. Call Sara at 303.444.3636 for information.

IHAD welcomes Eli Spanier as the new Director of Education and Program Services. In this newly created position, Eli's main responsibility will be to recruit, train and supervise IHAD’s 20 AmeriCorps members. In addition, he will help with curriculum development, tutor and mentor training, facilitate the coordination of efforts between the Project Coordinators and plan special events and programs. Originally from New York, Eli has a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Bates College and a Master’s Degree of Education in Multicultural, Bilingual and Social Foundations of Education from CU-Boulder. After college, Eli served as an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer on the Navajo Reservation in Utah directing several after-school and summer programs for K-12 Native American students. Eli then became a Facilitator of a Federal "School to Work"

Grant. In 1997, Eli moved to Colorado and accepted a job as the Campus Supervisor at Clearview Educational Cen-ter, a school for suspended/expelled students. Most recently, Eli worked in the Service Learning Department at Eagle Rock School, an alternative residential school for youth in Estes Park. Fortunately, Eli heard about this new position for IHAD and, in effect, has come full circle in his career as an educator.
