The mixed ability class is a class in which thelanguage levels o f the students vary more widely

than normal. This difference in level can be due to:

the abilities o f the students, their previous study or

experience o f English, their motivation, or a

    combination of these factors.

The mixed ability class poses two main, distinct

problems for the teacher with a coursebook

syllabus to follow: firstly, how to tackle the same

coursebook exercises with students of differing

ability, and secondly, what to do with stronger

students who finish their work before the rest ofthe class.

This booklet contains a variety o f suggestions on

how teachers using the Dream TeamStudent's

Book 2 can deal with both o f these problems.

    2 Using the Sfu

    class

When considering how to tackle the same

coursebook activity with students of differing

ability, teachers need to find strategies for makingthe activity either easier or more difficult, without

affecting the outcome of the activity. In this way

correction can still be done using a single answer

key, or together with the whole class.

The basic rule for such adaptation is to leave the

students of middle ability to complete the exercise

at it appears in the book, while providing

additional support for weaker students, or taking

away support (thereby adding challenge) for

    stronger students.

The following are suggestions for grading specificexercises within Dream TeamStudent's Book 2 in

this way. Different types o f activity are looked at in

turn, and suggestions for extension activities are

also provided. These can be used as 'time-fillers'

for students finishing an exercise early, or as extra

practice for students requiring a further challenge.

The suggestions for adaptation provided here can

be applied to all areas of the Dream Team

coursebook, and, naturally, to other teaching

    materials as well.

    The presentation story

Example: Unit 3, page 31, Exercise 1Students are required to decide whether thestatements about the story are true or false, and to

    correct the false statements.

How can I make this activity easier?Do not require weaker students to correct the false

    statements.

Alternatively, give them a photocopy o f the

presentation story with the relevant pieces of

    information underlined or highlighted. Example:

Jeff Oh no. I'm no t as good as Ricky. He's abetter diver than I am.

How can I make this activity more challenging?Give stronger students the sentences without

punctuation, capitals or spaces between the words

so they first have to write the sentences then

    correct them. Example:

    rickysabetterdiverthanj eff

How can students extend this activity? They can:

use the sentences to write short dialogues.

    Example:

A Is Jeff a better diver than Ricky?

B No, he isn't. Ricky's a better diver than Jeff.

write their own true or false sentences to test

    another student.

    Grammar

Example: Unit 1, page 14, Exercise 2Students are required to complete a text with the

past tense of the verbs in brackets.

How can I make this activity easier?Give weaker students two alternative verbs for

each gap and ask them to choose the correct one.

Give them a photocopy o f the activity with the

    alternatives written in. Example:

Hi! I'm Edward. On Thursday, my mum

bought/spenttwo tickets for the Girlzconcert on

    Saturday evening.

How can I make this activity more challenging?

Give stronger students the text without the verbs.Give them the verbs in a word box. They have to

choose the correct verb as well as putting it into

    the past simple. Example:

  • 7/27/2019 Dream Team 2 Teacher's Resource Pack

    3/30

Hi! I'm Edward. On Thursday, my mum______two

tickets for the Girlzconcert on Saturday evening.

How can students extend this activity? They can:

write comprehension questions on the text for

    another student to answer. Example:

Did Edward's father buy the tickets?

write their own text with gaps for another

    student to complete.

    Vocabulary

Example: Unit 5, page 52, Exercise 2Students are required to match a list of words with

    pictures o f those words.

How can 1make this activity easier?Give weaker students a number of alternatives for

each word and ask them to circle the correct one.Give them a photocopy o f the activity with the

    alternatives written in. Example:

    1 concert hall k b i

To make the activity particularly easy, give only two

alternatives for each picture and make strategic use

of any words that are cognates in your own language.

How can I make this activity more challenging?Give stronger students a photocopy o f the picture

only. Ask them if they can give or guess the English

names without any help from you at all. Then

supply them with a list o f words with certain lettersdeleted, or in anagram form. Example:

    c_nc_rth_ll b_lc_ny st_g_ ...

    or

    treccon allh coyblan egats

How can students extend this activity? They can:

mime the people or musical instruments for

    other students to guess.

add the names of any other instruments ormusic-related words they know to the list,

perhaps using a dictionary for help.

    Reading

Example: Unit 2, page 26, Exercise 1Students are required to answer questions based

    on a tourist map.

How can I make this activity easier?Give weaker students a photocopy o f the tourist

map with the relevant pieces o f informationunderlined or highlighted.

How can I make this activity more challenging?Give stronger students the questions with the

words in jumbled order so they have to form the

    questions correctly before answering them.

    Example:

    is / What / Big Ben ?

How can students extend this activity?

    They can:

write their own comprehension questions or

true/false questions based on the map for

    another student to answer. Example:

What is The South Bank Centre?or

The Globe is an art gallery. True or False?

    Listening

    Example: Unit 5, page 54, Exercise 2

Students are required to listen to four teenagerstalking about their favourite TV programmes. They

must choose two programmes for each student

    from a list.

How can I make this activity easier?Give weaker students a photocopy o f the listening

text (from the Teacher's Book page 75) with the

    following key phrases blanked out:

    1 sports programmes, cartoons

    2 documentaries, soaps

    3 quiz shows, science fiction

    4 sports programmes, comedy shows

As the class listens, the weaker students fill in the

missing words in their text. They then use their

completed text to answer the questions in the

    Student's Book.

How can I make this activity more challenging?Don't let stronger students see the list of

programmes in the Student's Book. Give them the

    following straightforward comprehension

questions instead:1 What are Wayne's two favourite types of

    programme?

2 What type of programme does Wayne think is

    awful?

3 What are Carina's two favourite types of

    programme?

4 What other two types of programme does

    Carina also like?

5 What two types of programme are really

    popular in Poland?

6 Does Magda like these two popular programme

    types?

7 What are Magda's two favourite types of

    programme?

    4/30

8 What are Art's two favourite types of

    programme?

9 What type of programme does Art hate?

How can students extend this activity? They can:

make a recording of their own opinions

regarding the types o f TV programmes they love

or hate. They can use the tapescript as a model.

use a photocopy of the tapescript to do a task,

such as underlining certain lexical items or

    grammatical forms.

    Speaking

Example: Unit 1, page 18, Exercise 3Students play the Who am I?game, where one is a

superstar and the others ask him/her questions to

try to find out who he/she is.

How can I make this activity easier?Allow only a limited choice of superstars by

writing a list of five to ten names on the board.

Give weaker students an extensive list of prompts

    for questions to ask. Example:

Are you... French / English / American / male /

    female / old / young / middle-aged / an actor / a

pop star / a writer etc

Alternatively, allow only the weaker students to be

the superstars. Only the stronger students ask the

    questions and try to guess.

How can I make this activity more challenging?Stronger students need not be limited to

superstars. They can choose to be anything they

want to be: animal, mineral or vegetable.

How can students extend this activity? They can:

prepare oral presentations about their chosen

superstar. They can practise their presentations

in groups. Each group chooses one student to

give his/her presentation to the whole class.

    Writing

Example: Unit 5#page 54, Exercise 3Students are required to write about their favourite

    TV programme, using information prompts.

How can I make this activity easier?Give weaker students a list of questions to elicit the

information they will need for their text. Example:

What is the name o f your favourite TV

    programme? __________

What type o f programme is it? __________

    When do you watch it?_________

Then give them a skeleton text which they

    complete with the appropriate information.

    Example:

    My favourite TV programme

My favourite TV programme is a_____called_____.

    It is on_____and I watch i t______...

How can I make this activity more challenging?Give stronger students the basic paragraph

    structure for the activity(Paragraph 1=

Introduction; Paragraph 2 = Location), but not the

other prompts. Let the students decide themselves

what information to include in each paragraph.

How can students extend this activity? They can:

do a survey to find out the most popular TV

    programmes in the class.

prepare a TV guide which gives shortdescriptions o f some of their favourite TV

    programmes, including times and channels.

prepare oral presentations about their favourite

TV programme. They can practise their

presentations in groups. Each group chooses one

student to give his/her presentation to the whole

    class.

    Songs

Example: Unit 4, page 45, Exercise 1Students are required to complete a song with

    verbs from a box.

How can I make this activity easier?Give weaker students two alternative words for

each gap in the song. Give them a photocopy o f the

song with the alternatives written in. Example:

    1 I call/bringyou, when I need you

    My heart's on fire.

How can I make this activity more challenging?

Give stronger students a copy o f the activitywithout the words in the box to choose from. They

have to listen carefully to fill the gaps.

Alternatively, increase the number of gaps in the

song for the students to fill.

How can students extend this activity? They can:

find words that rhyme in the song, and make

    lists of other rhyming words.

create their own gap-fill exercise based on their

favourite song on the same theme for other

    students to complete.

    What channel is it on?

Pages 8 - 25 of this booklet provide three

photocopiable pages of additional exercises for

each o f the six units ofDream TeamStudent's Book

    2. These consist of a page of grammar practice

exercises, a page of vocabulary practice exercisesand a page of activities related to the Dream Team

presentation story, called 'Meet the team7. These

photocopiable pages can be used with the whole

class for consolidation of the work covered in the

Student's Book and the Workbook, or for revision

before a test. Alternatively, they can be given to

individual students who finish their classwork

before the rest of the class, or to weaker students

for extra study at home. The exercises are all

designed so that they can be completed

    independently by the students.

The first half of each page provides exercises o f thesame language level as the Student's Book, while

the second half of each page provides exercises

(labelled 'plus') o f a slightly higher level or freer

nature. These exercises offer stronger students

challenging extra language practice without taking

them further ahead in the coursebook syllabus. The

Grammar plus exercises and the Meet the team

plus exercises are, on the whole, of a freer nature

than those offered in the Student's Book, and give

    students opportunities for self-expression and

personalized writing practice. The Vocabulary plus

exercises extend the vocabulary presented in theStudent's Book by presenting extra words within

    the vocabulary topics.

The key to these photocopiable exercises is

provided on pages 26 - 31 of this booklet. Teachers

can correct the standard exercises either

individually or with the whole class, but it is

advisable to correct the freer 'plus' exercises

individually. For many such exercises, a model

answer is given in the key.

The Teacher's Resource Pack also contains a poster

(The Story of Pop) for use in the classroom. This

poster combines a 'family tree' o f popular music

with vocabulary and grammar familiar to students

from the Dream TeamStudent's Books. The poster

can be permanently or temporarily attached to the

classroom wall and used for whole-class activities

or for time-filling / extension activities with small

    groups or individual students.

Point to the pictures on the poster and ask

students to identify the types of music they

    represent.

Ask students if they can identify the artist/group

    in each picture.

Put students into groups of three (if there are

one or two students left over, make up one or

two groups o f four). Give each the name of one

of the music types in the lower half of the poster

(ie, not Rock'n'roll or Soul). Stronger groups

can be assigned two types of music. (It doesn't

matter if more than one group is assigned the

    same type of music.)

Students elect one member of their group

(Student A) to do all the writing for the activity.

Either give the groups photocopies of thefollowing questions, or dictate the questions to

    the groups:

1 When/Where did this type of music start?

2 Can you name any performers o f this type of

    music?

3 What other types of music is this type related

    to?

4 What are the main characteristics of this

    type of music?

5 Do you, as a group, like this type o f music?

Circulate round the class, giving help if

    necessary.

One member from each group can go up to the

poster to gather information. They may not

write the information down, but must pass it on

to the group orally. Only Student A writes

    anything.

If the specific information is not given on the

poster, encourage students to try to give their

    own answers.

If some groups finish the task much earlier than

the others, ask them to write a paragraph about

their type o f music, or assign them another type

    of music to research.

When each group has answered all the

questions for at least one type of music, the

Student As report back to the class about their

    types of music.

    Whole-class activity 2

Keep the same groups from the first activity.

Give each student a photocopied questionnaire,

like the one below, asking them to grade each

type of music on a scale of 5 (love) to 1 (hate).

Each student takes turns at asking another their

opinion o f each type of music, e.g. What do you

    think o frock'n'roll?

When every student in every group has been

questioned, the Student As report to the rest of

the class what the most popularand most

unpopulartypes o f music for their group.

collate the information to determine what is the

most popular and most unpopular type of music

    for the whole class.

    Individual activities

Low level: give weaker students a list of

statements about the types o f music, some o f which

are true and some of which are false. Example:

1 Motown was based in New York, USA.

2 Rock'n'roll comes from 'rhythm and blues'.

Middle level: give students a list of

comprehension questions based on the poster.

    Example:

1 Where was the home of Merseybeat?

2 What are the main ingredients of heavy metal?

High level: get stronger students to write a quiz,

    using information from the poster.

Copy their quizzes and give them to the other
