JUNE 2015 THE SKIPPER Onboard Fish Handling 31 DRAWM Fishtubs General Manager Kieran Ward commented ahead of the Skipper exhibition in Aberdeen, “The Skipper show in Aberdeen usually marks the start of summer weather...which means these insulated Fishtubs are in big demand especially the 70 and the 100Ltr tubs. Whether it’s a single tub or more they are after, our customers continue to be pleasantly surprised at the affordable prices. At present we are offering free shipping on these tubs throughout the UK and Ireland including the highlands and islands. I love to hear back from customers and find out how they are using the tubs.” Sean McFarlane from the Isle of Islay bought a 70 Ltr tub just last week. The picture shows his tub filled with ice by his boat. Sean commented “I plan mostly to use it in the summer with iced water to keep freshly line caught jumbo mackerel in prime condition for landing straight into local hotels from the sea to plate in the best possible condition as quickly as possible. In the winter months the bin will be used for keeping bait fresher from one day to the next for catching velvet crabs as they tend to be quite picky with bait.” Jose Anderson, skipper of the Osprey LK321 of Whalsay Shetland, knows the value of product quality. “I got 4 of the DRAWM 100Ltr tubs and 2 of the 310Ltrs. I use them for keeping the fish fresh with slush ice and also for keeping ice. The tubs are fantastic - great insulation, easy to stack and carry, the drain plugs are hand tightened and best of all they’re a good price.” Dublin Fisherman, Eoin Duff, fishes for lobsters and crab off the coast of Skerries. “I used to keep bait in the normal fishboxes. In the height of summer, though, the bait would go off in a matter of hours. I get my bait from Howth which is about a 2 hour round trip and can easily cost €25 in diesel. The 70 Litre was a good size for me, easy to handle and I’m able to keep 2 full 20 kilo packs of frozen bait fresh for over a week in them – The insulated fishtubs paid for themselves in no time.” Insulated fishtubs are recognised to contribute towards improving qual- ity and are eligible for European Fisheries Funding (EFF). GW Containers has long been the number one choice for fish boxes and insulated containers in the UK. With roots in the fish-ing industry dating back over 30 years with Director Graham Witherington helping to convert the Scottish industry from wood to plastic, it is fair to say they have always been at the forefront of plastic boxes & containers!

Saeplast Insulated Containers

GW Containers & Equipment ltd has been UK distributor for the well-known, proven and high quality Saeplast brand of insulat-ed containers for over 15 years.

Their proven strength and high insulation properties are one of the key components in peo-ples purchasing decisions as GW Containers Director, Gregg Witherington expands: “Saeplast

is synonymous with quality and is the most recognised and widely used brand of insulated container in the UK. We have seen significant growth this year as people recognise that paying for a high quality product is far better value for money, as our products are proven to last and proven to do the job they are intended. This is why Saeplast has been around for many years and continues to go from strength to strength”

Plastic Fish Boxes

Four years ago GW Containers took the big decision to stock, print and offer the three key ranges of plastic fish box; the 35, 60 and 75 litre boxes. Large suppliers not wishing to cater for small individual fisherman drove the decision. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength as GW Containers now suppliers many small fish-ing businesses as well as leading box pooling companies in both UK, Ireland, Europe and further afield such as UAE.

Gregg Witherington added: “Small fishermen were being neglected in both lead times, service and large manufacturers not wishing to produce small

runs of boxes. We wanted to sup-port these smaller companies and individuals so invested heavily in printing equipment, storage and staff to ensure we can meet these requirements. All our fish boxes are produced in Britain and we hope that companies keep sup-

ported us to ensure we deliver a quick lead time and excellent service”

UK’s Leading Fish Box & Insulated Container Supplier:

Swedish Unisystem AB was the first manufacturer of approved marine scales according to the European Directive 2009/23/EC. The scales are unique due to their automatic global gravity compensation unit. ’’We have developed and designed our marine scales and weighing solutions to be used at sea in close cooperation with fishermen’’ explains Johan Demes, global sales executive at Unisystem. ‘’This development never ends and we are continuously improving the scales based on new techniques and the demands of our customers’’.

Unisystem’s marine scales are very accurate even after long-term use and do not need recalibration. When trav-elling long distances, with the gravity change, the built-in compensation unit takes care of the global gravity compensation in addition to the tilt and motion compensation. This huge advantage makes the marine scales of Unisystem unique and highly appreciated by fishermen sailing in international waters.

Starting with just a marine scale as

a standalone scale Unisystem offers the possibility to extend later on with software for reports, a printer for labelling and last but not least with the total eSea®System software including RFID. This system can be delivered with communications for direct transfer of catch reports to an E-logbook and even traceability can be transferred. As more and more countries require traceability report-ing the eSea®System will be the next generation of marine scales.

‘’Unisystem supplies highly durable and very easy-to-use marine scales. Convinced by the quality of our products we can therefore offer a two years warranty. That’s why you will find our scales all over the world used by satisfied customers’’ says Johan. To conclude, I would like to mention we develop and manufac-ture customized weighing platforms and pallet scales including the same global gravity, tilt and motion com-pensation for use at sea. As far as I know Unisystem is the only producer of these large marine and pallet scales which can. be used to check

that allocated fishing quotas will not be exceeded’’.

Unisystem marine scales are avail-

able from authorized dealers in the UK and Ireland. For more informa-tion and contact details of our dealers visit www.marinescale.com.

Since 1919 BAADER has been the worldwide leading manufacturer of Fish Processing Machinery and Solutions. BAADER has specialized in developing and manufacturing machines and complete plants for processing of fish on board fishing vessels. The machines are developed with regard to dura-bility, reliability and operation to comply with the special high demands of machines installed on board fishing vessels.

Fish is such a scarce resource almost everywhere that catching fish cannot be carried out any longer without regard to size of the fish stock. Quotas and other regulations limit the quantity of fish available to the individual fisherman. Therefore, more than ever it is important for the fisher-men to handle the fish efficiently on board to achieve the highest possible quality of the fish. The quality of the fish depends on a

number of factors, e.g. how quick the fish is gutted, how the fish bleeds, how the fish is washed and how quick the fish is chilled.

Using BAADER gutting machines ensures that the highest possible quality is achieved. The Baader 510 Gutting Machine is perfect for on board processing of Cod, Hake, Haddock, Whiting, and Mackerel.

The 510 gutting machine has three main sections: A) Fish entry section with con-veyor chains, catches and a self-adjusting system of guide plates to position the fish correctly. B) Gutting section with rotating, cutting knives and rotatingnylon brush controlled by cams. The water system – using fresh or sea water – ensures efficient cleaning and washing of the fish during the gutting process. C) Driving section with electric or hydraulic motor, v-beltdrive and reduction gear for knife and brush.

With a throughput rate of up to 55 fish per minute depending on species and size, and requiring only one operator, this is the ideal compact but efficient machine for on board processing.Further information from Eddie Carr & Co. Tel +353 719147180 Eml: [email protected]

MARELEC is a Belgian com-pany founded in 1983 and produces marine systems, weighing equipment and trawl control systems. MARELEC marine scales.A steady delivery of marine scales to many European fishing vessels is being processed. More than 1000 marine scales have been delivered by MARELEC since 1993, and the new MARELEC W50C/D100 com-pletes the product range. This scale is CE-certified.

MARELEC has designed the ulti-mate weighing and labelling system for use at sea. The W50C/D100-scale is a combination of high-precision components, which results in a powerful production management system.

The first component is the D100 indicator, which is an intelligent pro-duction selection keyboard. With a few easy gestures on the touchscreen, you can select the species, size, quality and presentation. The next component is the W50C weighing platform. The accurate motion com-pensation and high weighing speed

optimizes your productivity. The C50 production management soft-ware offers you full control of your catches. It gives you a detailed report either in graphical or table form. The W50/D100 is produced with the MARELEC PR1 or PR2 label printer, for an efficient marking of your fish boxes.

Catching the fish

The MARELEC trawl control solu-tions give the vessels better fishing protection, because of the reduced trawl damage and less repair costs. The effect of fasteners is reduced drastically, especially on difficult grounds. The trawl control ensures maximum net opening through equal tension control and consequent length difference. You also get fish-ing time gain, through fast turning with the ship up to 180°, without haul-in of fishing gear. Another way MARELEC trawl control saves time, is through synchronized pay-out and haul-in of the warps towards preset lengths at optimal speed. It’s also labour saving, because there’s no more remarking the warps and mark

counting.

With the MARELEC D, skippers can monitor their fishing gear eas-ily through the user-friendly inter-face. Time and tension registration, maximum tension limit, actual ten-sion, shooting length can easily be

monitored on the screen. To measure the mesh gauge open-ing, MARELEC has introduced the Omega mesh gauge in 2007. Finally, with the MARELEC Pulse the company delivers an efficient solution in electric fishing on shrimps and razor clams.
