Shining Stars show howband empowers the youthLIEZL DAVIDS
Thisyear theShiningStarsShowBandhasopened its doors to school kids in the Wel-lington area to help empower the young-sters with different musical skills.
According to Devina Janse van Rens-burg, the project officially started on30 January and is operating from 10 Pel-ikaan Street in Hillcrest, Wellington.
“We started out with 20 children comingfor lessons on musical instruments andnowwehave 48 kids. The band ismore likean organisationwhereweare teaching lifeskills through the medium of music (in-struments and singing), art and dance andat the same time we are keeping the youthoff the streets.”
They facilitate music subjects such asmusic reflection, ear training, conducting, music theory, concert production andteaching skills.
Even though the band is only in exis-tence since January, they have alreadyperformed at various events.
Because the children attend the classesstraightafter school, theyalsoreceivehelpwith their homework.
“We also facilitate and interpret entre-preneurial skills to prepare our youth forthe business world.”
Devina said that there are a lot of young-sters who are bored after school and manytimes theybecomeinvolved incriminalac-tivities because of this.
“With the band, the children have some-thing positive to keep them busy with inthe afternoons.”
The children are also educated about so-cialandsafetyskills theycanapply intheircommunities.
“There are much more subjects to be fa-cilitated, but because of instrumentalshortages we can only apply the lessonstheoretically.”
To grow even bigger and better, ShiningStars Show Band needs more musical in-struments.
If anyone can assist them in this regard, contact Devina on 082 220 0145.

Both friendship and material benefits may well come to youat this time. You feel very sociable and gregarious and seekconviviality, especially with people who really know how tohave a good time. Charitable and philanthropic impulses
are stronger now, also, and should be followed withpositive action on your part.
21 January To20 FebruaryAQUARIUS
A nonstop flow of communication between yourself and thepeople in your immediate environment is likely today. Youmay engage in interesting and informative discussions or
fritter your time away in inconsequential chatter andgossip. Mental curiosity or restlessness may also impel you
to take a short trip or visit.
20 February to21 MarchPISCES
What occurs now makes you more aware of what you need, feel, andwant in your relationships. If you are unhappy in your personal life, this
is brought out now, and you'll need to face what is causing yourdissatisfaction. Differences in personal style, tastes, and ways of
expressing affection may emerge. You also feel amorous and loving and,if your personal life is going well, this is a time to really enjoy it.
21 March to21 AprilARIES
This is a good time to travel, especially to places you've neverexperienced before, where you will be exposed to new ideas and
different ways of looking at the world. Studying new concepts is alsofavored; your ability to understand abstract ideas and your desire togrow intellectually is strong now. Anything that broadens your world
appeals to you at this time.

22 June to23 JulyCANCER
Your amorous feelings and passions are strong andcompelling at this time, and you tend to be very demandingof a lover's energy and affection. Tensions may erupt in close
relationships because one of you feels that you have beengiving more and not receiving enough in return, or one of
you is more amorous than the other.
21 May to22 JuneGEMINI
A fast pace, with many letters, phone calls, errands, meetings,or discussions, is on the agenda. You may feel mentally
restless, impatient, and overly eager to get your own ideasacross. Also, a situation may arise which requires you to saywhat is on your mind, to make a decision, or to clearly voice
your personal opinion on some issue.
23 Julie to24 AugustLEO
You are fascinated by the mysterious now. Unsolved or puzzlingproblems and the hidden or behind the scenes aspects of a
situation interest you most, and you delve and probe until youdiscover the truth. An interest in psychology or other peoples'
secrets comes to the fore. You enjoy spy, mystery, andsupernatural stories.
24 August to23 SeptemberVIRGO
Your choices and decisions may lack prudence, realism, or soundjudgment right now. Be wary of overly optimistic plans which are
presented to you, signing contracts without doing thorough backgroundwork or reading the fine print, or promising something which will bedifficult for you to fulfill. Questions of honor, ethics, law, or morality
arise in your mind at this time.

You the entrepreneur: How tobe lucky in businessDAVID MALHERBE
Somehow many people havethe desire to be lucky someway or another. That is whymany people regularly buyLotto tickets. “If I canonlywinthe Lotto, then all my prob-lems will be solved.” But thatdoes not seem to be true.
I recently read in theYoumaga-zine about a man who wonR100 million in the Lotto, spent it all withintwo years and now says he wishes that heneverwon it because it brought himno luck, rather the contrary.According to articles in Entrepre-
neur.com, it seems that the roll-of-the-dicekind of luck does not exactly work in busi-ness, rather the make-your-own kind ofluck.Much emphasis is placed on the impor-tance of preparation. People say that luckis when opportunity meets preparation.Adam Toren says we need to be prepared
in three ways. First, we need to always beready for an opportunity when it comes ourway by having business cards available, tosell ourselves or our business’ products orservices and by always looking our best.Secondly, be prepared to ask for an oppor-
tunity to present a business proposal where
you can supply a needed productor service. Don’t be afraid to geta “no.” If you do not ask you al-ready have a “no” without anypossibility of a “yes.”Thirdly, always show grati-
tude. Many opportunities andmuch “luck” will come your waysimply by saying thanks. This, unfortunately, is rare. In
Luke 17we read howJesus healed10 lepers, yet only one returnedto thankHim.Much goodwill will
come your way, simply by living a life ofgratitude. On the other hand, Steve Tobak reasons
that “luck” often happens where opportuni-ty meets desperation. According to him, wearemost open to new ideaswhen our surviv-al is at stake. Often when people feel hope-less they’ll adopt the “I’ll try anything, I’vegot nothing to lose” mind-set. Necessity isthe mother of invention.Manysuccessfulbusinesseswerebornout
of necessity and desperation, yet some peo-ple deem the owners “lucky.” Perhaps our“luck” is in our own hands.* David Malherbe is a business and career

Salt: Too much causes high blood pressureWearebringingupourchildren tobecomeyoung sufferers of high blood pressure! This is the finding of the Heart and
Stroke Foundation South Africa who saythat at least one in 10 children in SouthAfrica are already diagnosed with highblood pressure. This shocking trend is largely as a result
of the unhealthy foods we feed our chil-dren. An unhealthy lifestyle, which in-cludes a diet high in salt, is themain causeof high blood pressure.Whilst we expect to see high blood pres-
sure in older adults, the phenomenon inchildren is now much more common andvery worrying, especially as these youngchildren will have a much greater risk ofdeveloping severe health problems likeheart disease, stroke and kidney failure asyoungadults. It is estimated that highbloodpressureisoneof theleadingcausesofdeathworldwide. In South Africa one out of three individu-
als over the age of 15 suffers fromhighbloodpressure, with the number of people affect-ed steadily increasing year on year.Although the estimates for salt intake of
South African children are unknown, saltintakeamongstadults ishigh, leadingmanyexperts to believe that the same is true forchildren, since children follow the habits oftheir parents and carers. Foods high in salt
such as crisps, fried chips, kotas or pies areoften bought at school tuck shops and ven-dors. Recent research has shown that oneout of three adolescents eat fast foods twoto three times a week. Fast foods of coursetypically contain high levels of salt. A fa-vourite daytime meal amongst Sowetanteenagers is the Kota (‘quarter’), typicallycomprising of a quarter loaf of white bread, chips, fried eggs, cheese and polony or sau-sage. A kota alone will provide more saltto a child’s diet than the entire recommen-dation for the day.Dietary habits in childhood and adoles-
cence also influence eating patterns in laterlife. Liking salt and salty foods is a learned
taste preference and so it is vital that chil-dren do not develop a taste for salt in thefirstplace.Furthertothis, ahighsalt intakein children can influence blood pressureand may predispose a child to the develop-ment of a number of diseases including:high blood pressure, osteoporosis, respira-tory illnesses suchasasthma, stomachcan-cer and obesity. This year for World Salt Awareness
Week, the HSF wants to ensure everyoneunderstands the importance of a healthystart for children. As part of the week theywant to encourage the food industry to actmore responsibly by reducing the amountofsalt theyaddtochildren’s foodandtostopadvertising high salt food to children. Theyare thus calling on all tuck shops, food ven-dors, restaurants, take aways and food com-panies to help us save our children’s hearts.Public education is another key element
