The SUNY Oneonta men’s track & field program added two more All-Americans to its honor roll, as junior J.D. Roth (Pearl River/Nanuet) and sophomore Joe Carr (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) brought home hardware from this year’s NCAA Division III indoor track & field championships held at the University of Nebraska on Mar. 14-15. The Red Dragons scored eight points and finished tied for 24th with the team title going to the Uni-versity of Wisconsin-La Crosse with 63.5 points.
Roth, who competed in both the weight throw and shot put events became the first Oneonta thrower to earn All-American honors. He placed fifth in the weight and 13th in the shot at the championships. Roth soared past 19 meters in the weight, breaking his own school record in the process. His distance of 19.13m (62’-9.25”) was only two inches out of fourth place and nearly one half meter further than his previous best mark in the event. In the shot put, Roth’s best throw was 15.05m (49’-4.5”), as he failed to make
the finals in that event. This was the first time Roth qualified for the national championships.
Carr, who was making his first appear-ance at the indoor championships, finished fifth in the 200m dash to earn his All-American honors. Carr, who was an outdoor national champion and All-American last spring, ran a personal best indoor time of 21.65 in the prelims and a finals time of 21.74.
Oneonta had a total of four men com-pete this year, as junior Patrick Weinert (Schenevus/Schenevus) and sophomore Jake Alviene (East Greenbush/Columbia)
competed in the weight throw and 60m hurdles respectively. Weinert was making his first indoor championship appearance and Alviene was

Weinert recorded a personal best mark of 18.41m (60’-5”) in placing ninth in the weight throw while Alviene tied his school record of 8.15 seconds in placing ninth in the hurdles.
Senior diver, Jermaine Miller (El-mira/Southside), competed for the last time as a Red Dragon March 19th and 21st, as he returned to the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships for a third straight year. This year the cham-pionships were hosted by Franklin College on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis, IN.
Miller was one of only 25 men that qualified for the championships. Jermaine qualified in both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
“It’s bittersweet,” said head coach Chris Schuler-Ghiorse. “It was excit-ing to watch him compete, but knowing that his career is over is a little sad. He has come so far during his career and has worked so hard to achieve so much. I am proud of what he has accomplished.”
Miller concluded his career with a 24th and 20th finish on the 3-meter and 1-meter boards respectively. Jermaine scored 380.45 points on the 3-meter and 408.70 points on the 1-meter.
Miller graduates as the school record holder in both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of 537.20 and 509.50 points, respectively. The 1-meter record was on set Nov. 15 of this season while the 3-meter was set at this year’s SUNYAC championships. He placed second in the 3-meter and third on the 1-meter boards.

Teams Honored for their AcademicsFour Teams Recognized
for its Academic Accomplishments
This past fall, SUNY Oneonta had four teams earn national academic hon-ors from their respective Coach’s Associations. They included women’s cross country, women’s soccer, field hockey and wrestling.
The women’s cross country team was recognized for a sixth consecutive year. The Red Dragons were one of five squads from the SUNYAC to be recognized as well as one of 215 overall. The women had an overall GPA of 3.33. To be considered, a team must have competed and compiled a score at the NCAA Regional meet while having a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or higher.
The women’s soccer team was honored for the second consecutive year by the NSCAA for it’s academic accomplishments as a team. Oneonta was one of 593 women’s teams to be recognized across all divisions for having a minimum GPA of 3.00 or better as a team. The NSCAA began recognizing teams for their accomplishments in 1996.
The field hockey team was honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for the Division III National Academic Team Award. They were one of 126 schools to earn team honors. To be eligible, the team must compile a combined GPA of 3.0 or greater. The Red Dragons were one of only three SUNYAC schools to be honored. This was the eighth consecu-tive year that the team earned national honors.
The wrestling team earned the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Team Academic Award for its overall academic success as a team. It was the eighth time overall for the team honor. Oneonta was the only SUNY and one of only two teams from the state of New York to be recognized.

SUNY Oneonta Athletics hosts Kids in Sports Day SUNY Oneonta student athletes, representing men’s and women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, vol-leyball, men’s and women’s tennis, softball and field hockey, hosted over 100 children ages 4-13 for “Kids in Sports Day”. The event took place on Saturday, Feb. 1 in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House.
The student athletes of SUNY Oneonta enjoy every opportunity to mentor young, aspiring ath-letes. This day was another such opportunity where they could give back in the same way that someone gave of their time to help them when they were younger.
Senior women’s lacrosse captain, Stefanie Rodriguez stated, “Kids in Sports Day provides an opportunity for children to become exposed to various sports. Being involved in this event allows our athletics department to build the framework for future athletes. The children who participated in this free event were treated to loads of fun and skill learning as each team spent time teaching the skills of their specific sport. The day was split into two sessions and the children rotated to four different stations during each session that lasted 25 minutes each.

Chi Alpha Sigma Induction
SUNY Oneonta recognized National Student Athlete Day with its 18th annual luncheon honoring the college’s top student-athletes. The luncheon celebrated student athletes who have shown exem-plary performance in both the classroom and athletics. The NCAA created National Student Athlete Day 27 years ago to honor student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics, while having made significant contributions to their schools and communities. It also honors the network of parents, coaches, teachers and school systems that make it possible for young people to strike a balance between academic and athletic achievement and who use sport as a vehicle for positive social change. The day, established by the National Consortium for Aca-demics & Sports, is co-sponsored by the NCAA.
The event also falls during NCAA Division III Week, a celebration of our division’s unique philosophy that equally values academics, athletics and student-athletes’ involvement in a full and rich campus life. The NCAA Div. III philosophy is Discover, Develop and Dedicate.
In addition, the college will celebrate the induction of it’s 16th class of Red Dragon athletes into the The Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society. The 16 Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society inductees have achieved at least junior academic standing with a minimum 3.4 grade point average while completing two years as a varsity athlete in an NCAA intercollegiate sport. They also must be of good moral character and have the endorsement of both the head coach of his or her sport and the chapter president.
