COURSE DESCRIPTION: Fifth semester Filipino is an advanced-intermediate level course in the language. It is a continuation
of the second-year courses, LCA 405-406, designed to advance learners’ proficiency to be able to
function effectively in a wide range of social situations, participate in conversations dealing with a
variety of familiar and some less familiar topics. The focus of the course is the further development
of learners’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to be able to successfully perform in
interpersonal, presentational (written and oral) and interpretive (written and oral) modes of language
use.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following language
use areas:
1. Actively participate in sustained conversations and discussions covering a wide range of topic
areas, such as family and friends, travel, the weather, leisure activities and sports, food and diet,
beliefs and values, and some social issues.
2. Read and understand short to medium-length texts on general interest topics such as news reports,
articles on travel and recreation, short stories, and other authentic informational materials.3. Give and follow relatively detailed directions and instructions, e.g. direction to a particular place,
recipe, and other materials explaining step-by-step procedures.
4. Correctly interpret and appropriately use common idioms and expressions.
5. Give detailed narrations of a variety of events using different time frames.
6. Provide rich descriptions and comparisons of things, places, events, people, etc.
7. Understand overheard conversations, announcements, radio and TV talk showsand news
broadcasts on a range of familiar topic areas.
8. Demonstrate nearly full understanding of and retell in detail a movie or a story.
9. Use appropriate language in specific social situations, paying attention to cultural considerations,
e.g. meeting people at a party, complimenting, complaining, etc.10. Write letters, narration of events and description of people, objects, and places with relatively rich
detail.

• Weekly mini-presentations on a topic related to the week’s theme every Thursday (weeks 1, 2,
3) Three 8-minute mini-presentations with accompanying 2-page essays. There will be 3-5
minutes of Q&A after each presentation.
• Weekly discussion of a news article from an online news outlet every Tuesday (weeks 2, 3, 4)
Three 10-minute summary + comments on a news article (in Filipino) selected by the student,
followed by a discussion. Write a short summary of the points discussed.
• Weekly tests every FridayAll tests will include the following sections: grammar, reading,
listening, & writing.
• Final written exam and OPI (oral proficiency interview),There will be a comprehensive exam
and a 20-minute interview on Thursday, July 12th.
• Portfolio, due on Friday, 7/13
The collection must include six original and revised versions of writing assignments and a
1- page introduction. 1-2 writing assignments from each week must be revised and compiled
into a portfolio. Optionally, you may also include other interesting homework and in-class
writing assignments. You are free to organize your portfolios in any manner that you like. Be
creative! You may use pictures, illustrations, etc. to make your portfolios more interesting.

GUIDELINES FOR WRITING ASSIGNMENTS & HOMEWORK EXERCISES
A. WRITING assignments should be 150-300 words (not more than two pages!) typewritten on letter
size bond paper, using 12 point Arial or Times Roman font, double spaced, with 1-inch margins on
all sides, and left aligned or justified.
B. HOMEWORK can either be
a) completed worksheets provided by the instructor
b) typewritten, double spaced on letter size bond paper
c) handwritten, double spaced on letter size ruled pad paper

CLASS POLICIES
1. Attendance-- Coming to class on time and every session is very important. Any elective
absencewill significantly lower your final grade. You are responsible for any missed lessons or
assignmentsdue to absences. No make-up exams/quizzes for undocumented/unexcused absence
on exam days.
2. Using Filipino—It is LCA policy to use the target language (in this class, Filipino) as the
medium of instruction. English will be used no more than 10% of the time during class time.
Students must do their best to use Filipino during class hours and practice it beyond class time.
3. Placement-- A language proficiency assessment will be conducted by the instructor on the first
week of classes to confirm students’ proficiency levels. You may be asked to transfer to a different
class that is deemed to be the most appropriate course level for you.
4. Preparation-- You must come to class prepared by bringing the appropriate materials,textbook,
handouts, and completed assignments.
5. Homework and Writing assignments—All assignments must be turned in on time. Late work
will incur a 1-point deduction per day late.
6. Participation-- You are required to participate in class. This includes daily recitation and class
activities. If you are working in a group or with a partner, you must actively participate in the activity
in order to receive full attendance and participation points.
7. Electronic devices-- Cellular phones and pagers must be in silent or vibrate mode during class
hours. Music/video players must be turned off. Computers may only be used to take notes; no web
browsing during class, unless otherwise instructed.
8. Consultation-- If you have any questions, concerns, or problems with the class or with the lesson,
contact your instructor as soon as possible.
9. Student code of conduct-- All students must adhere to the UW student code of conduct.
Violations of the code include, but are not limited to, submitting plagiarized work, cheating on tests
and/or exams, falsifying information or producing false documentation for absences, and violating
other students’ academic freedom of expression and/or opinion. It is expected that students will
conduct themselves in class in a manner that is non-discriminatory and acceptable to the university
community. By enrolling in this course, each student assumes the responsibilities of an active

Course Description
Third year Filipino is the next course following the Intermediate Level in the language program. The
course is designed to develop communicative competence among learners allowing them to function in
daily social situations, and engage in conversations on a variety of concrete topics in the target culture.
Macro-skills development is the major goal of the course and will be realized by using different
approaches for the learners to ask and answer questions on selected topics for every week. Using the
target language, learners will be asked to describe, narrate, explain, and argue on issues read and
discussed.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, the students will be able to demonstrate advanced proficiency in the
interpersonal, interpretive (reading and listening), and presentational (writing and speaking) modes of
communication covering a wide range of topic and competency areas. More specifically, the student
will be able to perform the following tasks:
Participate actively in sustained conversations on various topics such as recreation, travel,
celebrations and festivities, and current events.
Give detailed descriptions of people, places, events and cultural activities using appropriate
modifiers.
Use appropriate words/expressions which are politically correct and acceptable in the target
language culture.
Discuss issues citing one’s opinion on various issues using appropriate vocabulary.
Participate actively in individual, dyadic or group activities in response to daily tasks, events
and other topics.
Provide detailed narrations of events or episode of a film/documentary viewed or story read with
correct sequential adverbs and a variety of cohesive devices.
Read and correctly interpret a variety of texts like news reports, articles from academic journals,
blogs, and literary pieces.
Write short to medium length compositions, including research-based articles which are
comprehensible to co-interlocutors and native speakers
