Aroid is the name for members of the Araceae family of plants, sometimes known also as the Philodendron or Arum family. Species of this family are characterized by their beautiful combination of spathe and spadix in their inflorescence, sometimes referred to as a "flower". Among others, Amorphophallus titanum is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world, and is native solely in Sumatra, Indonesia. The “flower” is characterized as a carrion flower, and also known as the corpse flower or corpse plant due to its odor. Many other species are used as ornamental plants or food sources.
This field course will cover various aspects of Araceae plants in Indo-nesia, including general biology, systematics, ecology, history, use and ethnobotany. It will consist of in-class lectures, field work, excur-sions and cultural programs. The main event will be a 3-day field trip to Bengkulu province, Sumatra, which is home to several Amorpho-phallus species, and also another famous plant, the parasitic Rafflesia flower (Rafflesiaceae).
