Woodrow!Wilson!Middle!School!is!making!the!PBIS!paradigm!shift!–!rewarding!all!students!for!meeting!expected!behaviors.!PBIS!has!many!levels!of!supports!which!include!“(a)!teamNbased!leadership,!(b)!dataNbased!decisionNmaking,!(c)!continuous!monitoring!of!student!behavior,!(d)!regular!universal!screening,!and!(e)!effective!onNgoing!professional!development”!(PBIS,!2014b).!The!focus!of!PBIS!is!on!four!main!elements:!outcomes,!data,!systems,!and!practices!(figure!1).!

These!elements!are!all!interconnected!and!drive!the!sustainability!of!a!schoolNwide!PBIS!program.!!

The!national!website!on!PBIS!(PBIS,!2014b)!says!it!best:!!“In!the!past,!schoolNwide!discipline!has!focused!mainly!on!reacting!to!specific!student!misbehavior!by!implementing!punishmentNbased!strategies!including!reprimands,!loss!of!privileges,!office!referrals,!suspensions,!and!expulsions.!Research!has!shown!that!the!implementation!of!punishment,!especially!when!it!is!used!inconsistently!and!in!the!absence!of!other!!

positive!strategies,!is!ineffective.!Introducing,!modeling,!and!reinforcing!positive!social!behavior!is!an!important!step!of!a!student's!educational!experience.!Teaching!behavioral!expectations!and!rewarding!students!for!following!them!is!a!much!more!positive!approach!than!waiting!for!misbehavior!to!occur!before!responding.!The!purpose!of!schoolNwide!PBIS!is!to!establish!a!climate!in!which!appropriate!behavior!is!the!norm.”!!

The!Process!PBIS!has!nine!components!within!its!process.!They!include!(a)!gathering!baseline!data,!(b)!

establishing!schoolNwide!expectations,!(c)!identifying!problem!areas!in!the!school,!(d)!developing!an!acronym!with!three!to!five!easy!to!remember!phrases!or!words,!(e)!teaching!the!expected!behaviors,!(f)!rewarding!students!for!those!behaviors,!(g)!giving!clear!and!consistent!consequences!to!students!who!violate!the!behavior!expectations,!(h)!monitoring!discipline!and!academic!data!to!make!informed!decisions,!and!(i)!developing!a!three!tiered!system!of!interventions!(schoolNwide,!classroom,!and!individual).!!The!greater!these!components!are!fully!implemented!within!the!school,!the!more!sustainable!and!impactful!PBIS!will!be!for!years!to!come.!!!

Having students model these different expectations will aid greatly in the teaching of the bheavior. Please have students practice, discuss, and model the expectations. Giving students a competative group quiz on Kahoot or playing a jeapordy game with them may make this more interactive.

Consequences!!

!

!

!

! Consequences!are!a!major!part!of!PBIS.!Without!consequences,!students!would!

quickly!learn!they!can!do!whatever!they!would!like.!The!purpose!of!consequences!in!the!

framework!of!PBIS!though!is!not!to!be!punitive,!but!to!be!restorative.!It!is!an!opportunity!

to!reteach!a!behavioral!expectation!and!an!opportunity!for!that!student!to!grow.!There!are!

two!different!levels!of!consequences!for!students!–!1)!classroom!managed!and!2)!office!

managed.!(see!page!10!for!a!complete!flowchart).!Interventions!and!strategies!must!be!

implemented!in!the!classroom!for!classroomNmanaged!behaviors!before!a!student!is!sent!

to!the!office.!If!three!interventions!by!the!teacher!fail!(e.g.!verbal!warning,!refocus!form,!

and!relocation),!the!student!then!can!be!sent!to!the!dean’s!office!and!a!discipline!referral!

should!be!filled!out.!!

Classroom!Interventions!Importance'of'Interventions!

! !Classroom!interventions!and!classroom!consequences!are!also!a!major!part!of!PBIS.!

Classroom!interventions!minimize!loss!of!instructional!time.!In!2013N2014,!WWMS!lost!

33,440!minutes!of!instructional!time!for!discipline!issues!with!students!(averaging!10!

minutes!per!discipline).!Last!year,!WWMS!averaged!17.56!disciplines!per!academic!school!

day.!In!the!2014N2015!school!year,!it!is!slightly!improved!to!15.36!disciplines!per!academic!

school!day.!With!15!disciplines!a!day!and!averaging!20!minutes!per!disciplined!student,!

there!is!a!loss!of!300!minutes!of!instructional!time!every!school!day.!The!more!classroom!

interventions!used!to!keep!students!within!the!classroom!will!maximize!instructional!time!

for!all!students.!!

Refocus'Form'

! On!the!next!page!is!a!tool!that!staff!can!use!called!a!refocus!form.!These!forms!can!be!

printed!off!and!given!to!students!when!they!are!in!the!need!for!refocusing.!It!is!a!reflection!

tool!for!students!to!see!how!their!behavior!is!affecting!the!classroom,!the!teacher,!and!

themselves.!Students!fill!this!form!out!when!they!cannot!be!redirected!verbally.!The!form!

should!take!no!longer!than!3N5!minutes!to!fill!out,!cutting!loss!of!instructional!time!greatly.!!

Teaching'students'about'the'refocus'form'and'how'to'fill'it'out'is'necessary'before'implementing'this'as'an'intervention.!

WWMS!Positive!Recognition!System!Warrior!Bucks!

Warrior!bucks!is!the!main!and!universal!recognition!system!for!positive!behavior.!

Staff!will!be!given!300+!warrior!bucks!each!at!the!beginning!of!the!week.!Teachers!will!

give!students!warrior!bucks!for!meeting!behavior!expectations!or!going!above!and!beyond.!

All!teachers!should!give!warrior!bucks!out!for!minimally!(a)!on!time!

behavior/preparedness!and!(b)!turning!in!homework.!The!research!and!suggestion!from!

PBIS’s!national!website!is!to!reward!more!often!than!not.!A!student’s!reward!to!discipline!

ratio!should!be!4:1.!!

On'Time'Behavior'and'Preparedness'

! Teachers!should!choose!two!classes!in!which!they!will!reward!all!students!for!on!

time!behavior!and!preparedness.!If!a!student!is!on!time,!but!not!prepared,!this!student!

should!not!receive!a!warrior!buck.!These!two!classes!should!be!rewarded!3N4!times!a!

week,!but!not!every!day.!After!improvements!in!on!time!behavior!and!preparedness,!a!

teacher!can!switch!the!two!classes!to!other!hours!that!are!struggling!with!on!time!behavior!

and!preparedness.!!

Turning'in'Homework'

! Teachers!can!reward!students!for!turning!in!homework.!How!often!a!teacher!

rewards!for!turning!in!homework!is!completely!up!to!the!teacher.!Warrior!bucks!can!be!

given!to!students!for!turning!in!all!homework!for!the!week,!or!it!can!be!done!daily.!

Whatever!the!system,!it!must!be!consistent!for!all!students.!Teams!can!collaborate!on!this!

and!work!together.!!

Meeting'Behavior'Expectations'

! Students!should!be!rewarded!consistently!for!appropriate!behavior!in!all!locations!

in!the!building.!If!a!student!is!observed!being!safe,!respectful,!and/or!responsible!in!a!

certain!location,!this!student!should!be!rewarded.!This!reinforces!the!positive!behavior!for!

that!individual!student!and!causes!contagion!of!behavior!for!those!who!observed.!Again,!it!

is!better!to!reward!more!often!than!not!rewarding!at!all.!

Incentive!Programs!! Once!students!receive!a!warrior!buck,!they!must!be!able!to!use!it.!There!are!two!

main!ways!initially!that!students!can!use!their!warrior!bucks:!(a)!lunch!drawings!and!(b)!

classroom/schoolNwide!PBIS!programs.!

Lunch'Drawings!

• Students!can!put!their!warrior!bucks!in!their!corresponding!grade!bucket!in!the!

cafeteria.!!

• Before!releasing!students!to!the!lunch!line,!a!lunch!supervisor!with!the!microphone!

will!draw!5!warrior!bucks!and!release!that!student!and!that!student’s!table!to!the!

front!of!the!lunch!line.!This!will!be!done!daily.!!

• The!warrior!bucks!drawn!will!be!put!back!into!the!bucket!for!the!Friday!drawing.!!

• Friday!drawings!are!more!substantive!drawings!where!either!opportunities!or!

material!items!will!be!given!away.!See!appendix!A!for!a!tentative!list!of!Friday!

drawings.!!

• After!the!Friday!drawing,!all!the!warrior!bucks!collected!will!be!counted!and!

redistributed!to!teachers.!

Classroom/SchoolLwide'Programs'

• Teachers!can!make!warrior!bucks!redeemable!within!their!classroom!or!within!

their!specific!team.!

• Examples!of!this!are!extra!credit!points,!turning!in!assignments!late,!team!parties,!

to!the!Behavior!Interventionist.!
