Dear Family and Friends, Time passes so quickly! The spring sports season is drawing to a close; the Prom and After- Prom Party are now fond memories; and the Underclassmen have been honored at their awards ceremony. Only a few events remain before we close another great year at James Monroe High School. On June 8 we will honor our spring athletes with a reception and awards ceremony in the auditorium. On June 9 the Senior Class will be recognized for their achieve- ments during Honors Evening; and seniors in attendance are expected to wear full graduation regalia (cap and gown). On Friday, June 17, we celebrate the graduation of our seniors. This year we have special events planned. Beginning at 8:30 A.M., seniors are invited to return to school dressed in their regalia, to participate in the first ever Senior Walk, which will tour all three lower level schools. Upon returning to James Monroe, the Senior Class officers will host a semi-formal luncheon for the graduates at 11:45 in the Commons. The mandatory gradua- tion practice will follow at 1:00 P.M. at the University of Mary Washington Anderson Center. Graduating seniors are expected to arrive at the Anderson Center by 6:15 that evening. The 2016 commencement will begin promptly at 7:00 P.M. Please remember that admission to the ceremony is by ticket only. There will be a live broadcast of the ceremony for those who are unable to attend. Please visit edu.regionalwebtv.com/jmgrad.html for this broadcast. It is understandable that parents, family, and friends are proud of their graduates and want to ap- plaud as they cross the stage, however, calling names and making comments detract from the dignity of the occasion. Guests are asked to refrain from behavior which disrupts the atmos- phere that we would like to maintain for graduation. We also ask that all guests remain in their seats until the recessional of the graduating class and the conclusion of the ceremony. As we conclude our 2015-2016 school year, it is important to remember that attendance is im- perative to our studentssuccess. On June 10, 13, 14, and 15 all students who are required to take an End of Course SOL or an End of Year Final Exam will be tested. Dismissal will be at 10:35 A.M. each of these days. Students taking a Math SOL will be allowed to stay past the 10:35 dismissal time. A late bus will depart at noon each day to accommodate those students needing the extra time to complete their SOL. On June 16 and 17, SOL Remediation will take place for students who qualify for expedited retakes, and students who missed an SOL or an End of Year Final Exam will be scheduled for make ups. Please check the exam schedule pro- vided in this newsletter for specific details. Students that failed a core class during the Fall or Spring term may be required to attend sum- mer school. Summer School at James Monroe High School will be June 27—July 26 from 8:00 A.M.—12:15 P.M., and July 4 and 5 will be holidays. Transportation will be provided. Students will be required to enroll if they did not pass a core academic/credit bearing course or if they need to retake an End of Course SOL test for verified credit. Our school counseling staff have been in contact with several students that will need this additional academic opportunity. If you have any questions, feel free to contact your respective school counselor. I want to personally thank all of the students, faculty and staff, and school community for all of their support this year. I cannot believe the year is over! Serving as the Principal of James Monroe High School is one of the greatest honors in my life. I respect the relationships that I have built with many of you, and the fact that you trust me to take care of your children. FINAL EXAMS

Final exams are given in every course and are designed to cover the content objectives and skills of the entire term. Each exam counts 20% of the final grade. Exam periods include a thirty minute review period followed by a two hour and fifteen minute testing period. Students who are absent from examination periods will not be al-lowed to make up the exam unless they present a doctor’s excuse, court order, or have prior ap-proval from Dr. Rachal. Only seniors are allowed to leave their exam as soon as they have completed it. They must, how-ever, leave the building promptly. ALL under-classmen must remain in the examination room until the end of the examination period. NO EAR-LY DISMISSALS WILL BE GRANTED DURING EXAMS. It is requested that parents not come to the school during the examination time to secure their student’s release. This practice is disruptive to the examination environment, and classes will not be disturbed for an individual student’s early release. If seniors are exempt from all of their exams, their last day of school will be Thursday, June 9, 2016. Seniors are expected to be at school on the days or periods in which they have class or an exam. When students are not scheduled for an ex-am, they need not report to school.
