His success began before he had even

completed his doctoral work at Arizona State

University. After applying to five university

 jobs, Dr. Sparks was offered three different

 positions – one of them being the one he

accepted at the University of Maryland.

 Now, decades later, he has transformed the marching band, and entire

 band program, at Maryland. He took the marching band from being a 130-person

group to a 250-person group through his hard work and dedication to ensuring the

group would be the best ensemble possible.

Each year Dr. Sparks strives to give his students new more exciting

opportunities than those of the last year – and he has succeeded. This year the

marching band performed in front of the President of the United States, and the

entire nation, when they marched in the 57th

 Inaugural Parade in Washington D.C.

Dr. Sparks plans to continue to move the band forward in the coming

years with these more opportunities like the

 parade. He says, “The thing that’s really

impressive is we keep getting better and keep

finding bigger things to do.”
