India is one of the most linguistically complex countries in the world.
2001 Indian census - there are 29 languages with more than one million native speakers each.
More and more Indians are expected to getting online access.
BACK GROUND & MOTIVATION
Dr Paul Raj Engineering College, Bhadrachalam
7
Still in India, larger populations in the rural areas are being deprived of the benefits of the use of ICT.
One of the main reasons for this seems to be the language barrier.
BACK GROUND & MOTIVATION
Dr Paul Raj Engineering College, Bhadrachalam
8
A person with manageable acquaintance with English may not feel much comfortable to work with computer systems in English because the documentations, system manuals, help menus etc. are mostly available in English.
Since, most of the rural population are not well acquainted with English and they prefer to learn/understand in
their mother tongue.
BACK GROUND & MOTIVATION
Dr Paul Raj Engineering College, Bhadrachalam
9
Due to this reason, most of the rural population are unable to exploit the
fruits of ICT.
In the country like India with diversified cultural groups and languages, ICT
usage can be promoted by making the content available in local languages.
BACK GROUND & MOTIVATION
Dr Paul Raj Engineering College, Bhadrachalam
10
The content in local languages will be vital to promote their enthusiasm and facilitate their understanding.
There is an urgent need for language computing works especially in
education sector.
Microsoft, Google and Face book also have translated their products into
local languages.
BACK GROUND & MOTIVATION
Dr Paul Raj Engineering College, Bhadrachalam
11
These initiatives provided a strong foundation for language computing works in India.
A massive translation initiative ‘National Translation Mission’ (NTM) started in the year 2006 also feels that the “technical terms in all disciplines and all 22 Indian languages” is an important task.
Still, it is an open task which requires efforts of technical experts and linguists etc

Telugu is the third most spoken language in India.
In Andhra Pradesh there are more than 600 engineering colleges and 150
(approx.) Polytechnic colleges and ITI’s with 2.5 lakhs students coming out every year.
Especially in the first year of theircourse, students are facing severe language problem.
BACK GROUND & MOTIVATION
Dr Paul Raj Engineering College, Bhadrachalam
13
JNTU - H results revealed that in 1st year B.Tech course pass % is ~25% and 4th year pass % is 65%.
The language barrier is severely affecting the students who are passing through the transition phases.
Technical terminology in Telugu can breach this language barrier.
BACK GROUND & MOTIVATION
Dr Paul Raj Engineering College, Bhadrachalam
14
This project being proposed aims at developing a technical dictionary in Telugu and provide on-line access to the users .
India is producing more than 4.8 lakhs engineers every year and A.P.
contribution about one lakh.
The proposed compilation will enhance the learning skills of the technocrats from A.P. Which in turn will improve the quality of the output.
