President’s MessageBy Candace BowersMVHA President

The Association is grieving the loss of our friend and neighbor Patricia, Pat, Figueroa, who died on June 24. Pat is survived by her husband, John, their two sons; and three grandchildren.

Pat and John moved to Mountain View in 1968—long-time residents by any standards, yet surprisingly “recent” because Pat was one of those people who seemed to have even deeper roots in our city, as if she had been born and raised here. A more dedicated community leader would be hard to imagine. Pat not only loved her community, she helped to build it. Serving on numerous local and regional committees, including two terms as Mountain View’s mayor, Pat worked to make Mountain View a better place to live.

A celebration of Pat’s life will be held at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, August 7 at 3:00 p.m.

Although you might have noted that the Association had originally planned to hold our annual summer meeting on the above date, needless to say, we will reschedule our event for later in the month. We hope you will be able to join us on Sunday, August 28 for our traditional summer BBQ at the Adobe. As always, we appreciate an opportunity to come together, to share memories, and to celebrate everything Mountain View.

—Candace

History Center UpdateBy Candace BowersMVHA President

From the Mtn. View CoHousing Community: Scrapbook chronicling the history of the Abbott House at 445 Calderon Avenue (see page 4 for more info!)

From Member John O’Halloran: Scrapbook chronicling Mr. O’Halloran’s career as Mountain View city manager from 1958 to 1973.

From Nick Perry, Newsletter Editor: St. Francis High School 60th anniversary commemorative publication. Souvenir (possibly gift to customers) from J. H. Mockbee Plumbing: metal drain cover/strainer stamped with company name. This could be a hair trap for the bathtub, or a strainer for the kitchen sink; either way, it’s an interesting piece (and a wonder it has survived.)

From Lisa Garcia, Director-at-Large: Los Altos High School commemorative mug with 1980s Los Altos Eagles logo.*

*Editor’s Note: We plan on adding the Los Altos Eagles mug to the History Center’s exhibit on Mtn. View’s high school campuses. Next year’s class of 2017 will be the 35th class at Los Altos High where the student body is 50/50 Mtn. View and Los Altos residents, sharing old Mtn. View High’s blue and gray colors and eagle mascot. Time flies for the eagles!

Abbott House RestoredOn April 30, 2016, residents of the new Mountain View CoHousing Community hosted an open house for their new housing complex at 445 Calderon Avenue in Old Mountain View. One very special component of the project is the restoration of the property’s historic Italiante Victorian farm house, originally built c. 1885 by local carpenter Charles Abbott. At the time, Calderon Avenue was a rural street and the house was surrounded by a 12-acre orchard. In 1926, the house was purchased by the Bakotich family. Anne Bakotich, born in 1917, grew up in the house and lived there until she passed away in 2007.

The house is now believed to be third-oldest home still standing in Mountain View. Few knew it existed though; the home was set far back from the street and hidden by dense foliage. During its restoration, the house was relocated to the front of the property and is now visible to those traveling along Calderon Avenue. The house will now be used as gathering space and a guest cottage by the Mountain View CoHousing Community. The house’s restoration was a true labor of love and priceless gift to Mountain View! Thank you, Mountain View CoHousing! Anne Bakotich’s friends and family were invited back to the

property to see the results of the home’s restoration.

Palo Alto historian Steve Staiger (left) and Nick Perry (right) shared the history of Mayfield and Mayfield Mall.

On May 1 a large crowd filled Mountain View’s historic Adobe Building as Palo Alto historian Steve Staiger from the Palo Alto Historical Association shared the tale of the long-lost Town of Mayfield and Nick Perry presented a slide show on Mayfield Mall. Here are a few snapshots and images from the event.

Nick Perry presented a slide show that featured many vintage images and ephemera related to Mayfield Mall, including this ad from the September 3, 1966, edition of the San Francisco Chronicle.

MVHA member Lucas Ramirez and City Council member Mike Kasperzak welcome guests to the event. MVHA Director-at-Large Lisa Garcia chats

with guests during the event.

MVHA members and guests listen to Steve Staiger’s fascinating lecture, titled “Mayfield: The Town that Disappeared.”

Summer BBQ Preview!

The Mountain View Historical Association invites our members and guests to join us for our annual Summer BBQ and Membership Meeting! The BBQ will take place at the historic Adobe Building on Sunday, August 28 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

The menu will once again feature our version of the famous “Parisian Burger” served at Mountain View’s beloved Linda’s Drive-In (1956–1985). And yes, “super fries” will be served too.

In addition to getting a tasty bite of Mountain View history, this year’s BBQ will also feature a special screening of the new documentary film, The Legacy of Arrow Development. The film chronicles the fascinating history of Arrow Development, a Mountain View company famous for building Disneyland’s earliest rides and designing the world’s first modern looping roller coaster.

Those who attended last year’s BBQ may remember that portions of the documentary were actually filmed during the event, when the filmmakers interviewed our guest speaker, former Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr. We are excited to welcome back the film’s creators to introduce their documentary, and we look forward to sharing this unique piece of Mountain View history with you all. Due to seating capacity, inside seating for

the film-screening is not guaranteed, so be sure to arrive early if you want to see the film!
