Our 62nd Year—Issue 1 February 2016
Dean’s Message
As we are in the midst of a new calendar year, I extend
to you my wishes for a healthy, wealthy, and wise new
year in 2016. For our Tidewater chapter, we are ap-proaching the busiest portion of our program year, and
even though Christmas 2015 was only a short time in
the past, Lent has begun, and Holy Week and Easter
are just a few blinks away in the future.
Please take note of our sponsored events and concerts
and support them by presence. Your enthusiasm and
advertising of our events to friends and church person-alities is our chapter’s best method for developing our
audiences. When you go to a concert, please invite
someone to attend with you.

Although not part of our Tidewater AGO program, The
Virginia Symphony is presenting Cameron Carpenter in
concert on three days, March 12, 13, 14. His program will include Concerto for Organ by Poulenc, and the
“Organ” Symphony No. 3 by Saint-Saëns. Many may
recall Cameron’s participation in our 2009 Regional
Convention held at
First Presbyterian
Church, VB. In addi-tion to his three con-
certs, Cameron will pre-
sent a 2 hour master
class from 6 – 8 p.m.
prior to his March 13 concert at Sandler Hall,
VB. For his concerts
and master class, Cam-
eron will use his tour-
ing organ, specifically
designed by him to rep-licate any style and pe-
riod of organ design.
Exact details for the
master class are not
available at this time.
Soon you will be receiv-
ing information con-cerning the election of
officers and “members at large” for Tidewater AGO. Pat
Spoettle, chair of the nominations committee, will be
sending information to all registered Tidewater AGO
members. Please take time to vote and return your bal-
lot. Specific information will be forthcoming concerning the election process.
I thank you in advance for participating and attending
our chapter events and concerts. For those of us who
perform, it is a genuine “pat of the back” to see fellow
colleagues attending our recitals and programs. When
you see me at concerts or programmed events, talk to
me and let me know how things are going for you.
Thanks,
Dr. Martin R. Sunderland Tidewater AGO Chapter Dean

1926 ~ 2016
Robert Milton Cundick passed away peacefully in the early morning of January 7,
2016. Born November 26, 1926 to Milton and Florence Pierson Cundick, he married Char-
lotte Clark (Cholly) in the Manti Temple on June 9th, 1949. Since his call to play Sandy
2nd Ward's new Hammond organ at age 12 Bob has been a force in LDS Church music.
During the depression, when family resources were scarce, Alexander Schreiner kindly of-
fered to mentor him as a scholarship student. Under the tutelage of LeRoy J. Robertson he
received a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University of Utah in 1950. After years
of teaching first at his alma mater and later at BYU he was called by President David O.
McKay to serve a mission at Hyde Park Chapel in London. Here he played daily recitals and
performed as guest organist at venues such as St. Paul's Cathedral, Kings College Cam-
bridge, and the BBC Radio Concert Series. Thus was he able to serve the mission he missed
due to his WWII Merchant Marine service. The year following his return from England he was called as Taber-
nacle Organist, enjoying nearly twenty-seven inspiring years of service on Temple Square. He especially cherished
his close association with fellow organists and the staff of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Service to family,
church, and community was his lifelong passion. His greatest musical legacy is his masterpiece, The Redeemer, A
Sacred Service of Music. And yet he was hesitant to claim credit, feeling that his part was more as scribe for inspi-
ration from above. He is survived by Cholly; children Robb (Laurel), Tom (Betsy), Ann Adams (Rob), Ruth Jack-
man (Dave), and Dave (Kim); brother Bert and sister Carol Hoopes (Grover); 23 grandchildren and 38 great-
grandchildren. Preceded in death by brothers Royce and Glenn.
Celebrate Valentine's Day weekend at the movies as The Virginia Chorale
serenades you with favorite songs from the silver screen, including Moon
River (Breakfast at Tiffany's), Over the Rainbow (The Wizard of Oz), Ben
Folds' The Luckiest (About Time), and the theme from Skyfall. Guitarist
Mark Edwards, an audience favorite last season, returns
to perform Romancero Gitano ("Gypsy Ballads"), a tour-de-force for chorus
and guitar by composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, one of Hollywood's
most prolific film composers.
