The Remnant Trust Student Scholar and Intern Projects for Spring 2019

The Remnant Trust’s Student Scholar for 2019, Reynaldo Torres, will give his presentation on his project on April 17th, 2019 at 5:30 PM in the Formby Room of the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library. An exhibit of the works used in Mr. Torres’ presentation will be located in the Texas Tech University Library until the Fall 2019 semester. According to Mr. Torres, his presentation,

The Origins of Economic Game Theory Through the Scope of the Remnant Trust Collection, concerns the following: “The inception of mathematical game theory is widely attributed to the research of mathematicians John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern. However, the collection contained within the Remnant Trust provides ample literature to pinpoint a plausible preface of logical economic game theory. Through the analysis of multiple canonical works of historical figures such as Adam Smith, Jean-Baptiste Say, and David Ricardo, numerous economic games of competition and cooperation can be outlined. The present research focuses in showcasing major examples of archaic game theory, as well as demonstrating their contributions to modern economics and social sciences.”

Marisa Stephens, The Remnant Trust’s Student Intern for the 2018-2019 school year, has created an exhibit of her own design based around documents in The Trust’s collection. Her display can be seen in the case outside of The Trust’s office, Room 109 in the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library.

Ms. Stephens’ display, entitled The Rebirth of the Soul and Resurrection of Man’s Monstrosity, covers the following: “This collection includes works regarding both the rebirth of the human soul in the afterlife as well as the resurrection of humanity's own folly in attempted creation. The literature displayed shows a correlation between divine retribution leading to rebirth in the afterlife, yet the maintenance of corruption as the soul is resurrected in punishment and eternal suffering.”

The way a book looks is the result of many decisions made by many people, including publishers, printers, binders, and designers. And the way a book looks subtly affects how we respond as we read it. By studying the material qualities of a book, we can learn a great deal about how that book was valued and marketed

as well as about how it was handled and read.

The Remnant Trust Student Scholar Award isavailable to all undergraduate and graduatestudents at Texas Tech University to doindividual research using documents from TheRemnant Trust Collection to create and curate anexhibit, as well as make a presentation to theuniversity and wider community. The successfulcandidate has the opportunity to work closelywith The Remnant Trust’s collection of first andearly edition books and manuscripts, participatein an active, collaborative learning experience,and find creative means of expression and

communication through the curating of anexhibit and the public presentation of research.

Brett Stine, the recipient of the 2018 Remnant Student Scholar Award, is a graduate studentpursuing a degree in Classics and part-time instructor in the department of Classical andModern Languages and Literatures at TexasTech University.

Brett’s project, "Ancient Authors, SacredFathers, and Peter Comestor's HistoriaScholastica: A Medieval Approach to AncientHistory Through the Collection of TheRemnant Trust," centers around PeterComestor, his Historia Scholastica, and his

influence on early medievalUniversity education. Brett alsoexplored how Roman and Greek authors influenced Comestor and his peers.

Pre-Modern Bibles: From the Dead Sea Scrolls to theComplutensian Polyglot Bible

From August 18, 2018 to March 3, 2019,select works from The Remnant Trustare on display in the Pre-Modern Biblesexhibition at the Museum of Texas TechUniversity. The exhibition focuses onthe evolution of the physical bible andhow biblical ideas have been conveyedthroughout history. The exhibitionfeatures the largest collection of originaland facsimile biblical texts ever placedon display at the same time in WestTexas. Texts have been provided by theHarry Ransom Center of the Universityof Texas at Austin, the LanierTheological Library, and the SarahCampbell Blaffer Foundation of theMuseum of Fine Arts Houston, amongother institutions. The Remnant Trusthas eight works on display at thisexhibition, including a Torah scrollfrom the 16th Century and a LatinVulgate Bible manuscript from circa 1250. Three of the Trust’s documentsare shown on the left.

Traveling libraries in the 18th and 19th centuries allowed literature fans to travel with a large number of works that do not take up a large amount of space; the traveling library shown above is approximately the size of two large folio volumes. Diamond Poets and Classics, published by Jones and Company of London between 1821 and 1830, is a miniature traveling library in The Remnant Trust’s collection. The library is on permanent display in the Reading Room of the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library on the campus of Texas Tech University. Forty-five works in fifty-two volumes are housed within the traveling library and includes works such as The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope, Poems by the Honorable Lord Byron with his Memoirs, Francis Bacon’s Essays, Moral, Economical, and Political, and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. The Remnant Trust also has individual works by John Milton, John Dryden, and Hannah More that are included in Jones and Company’s traveling library in its collection; these works are shown on the following page.

This work contains Dryden’s translations of Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Homer’s Illiad, three of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and several of Dryden’s own works, including Alexander’s Feast.

The Poetical Works of John Dryden in two volumes with the Life of the Author (both volumes) and The Works of Virgil translated by Dryden in two volumes (both volumes) are contained in Jones and Company’s Traveling Library.

HANNAH MORE

The first complete American edition of The Works of Hannah More, published in 1843, can be found in The Remnant Trust’s collection; only volume I is present. Hannah More devoted herself to reforming the culture of the English nation and aimed to lead a moral revolution against the excess and indulgence found throughout England at the time.

Hannah More’s Sacred Dramas; the Search After Happiness and Other Poems is found in the Traveling Library.
