Next Generation foundation 01/2003 – 08/2006

Director. Responsible for concept, strategy and implementation of a foundation to promote creativity, learning and play as a philanthropic vehicle for the CEO of LEGO, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen. The NGf was registered as a charity in the UK in 2003, and was widely recognised for its innovative web-based platform, the Map of Creativity, its projects, such as Making Playful Learning Visible, and its support in bringing researchers from the developing world to attend international conferences in London. The work of the NGf can be seen on www.ngf.org.uk

Museum für Angewandte Kunst (mak.frankfurt) 01/1999 – 12/2002

General Director. Responsible for all aspects of the museum’s operations, reporting to the Deputy Mayor for Culture and the City Council of Frankfurt. Relaunched the museum (formerly the Crafts Museum or Museum für Kunsthandwerk) in 2000 as the Museum for Applied Art with a major design collection and a new emphasis on ‘digital craft’ – a collection of websites and computer games (www.digitalcraft.org). Revamped the museum’s programme with exhibitions including ‘Blood: art, power, politics and pathology’, extended opening hours ‘till 8pm daily, bilingual texts throughout, and wireless internet throughout (a European first). Revitalised the museum shop mak.3 and the museum restaurant Emma Metzler. Visitor numbers doubled in three years, and built a group of ten, 3-year museum partners to support the museums new programmes. The museum generated more income from private sources than any other Frankfurt museum in the same period.

newMetropolis science and technology centre, Amsterdam 09/1994 – 12/1998

Head of Design, Education and Programming. Invited to lead the design team for the new Dutch national science and technology centre. Responsible for overseeing the development of 3.000+m2 of new interactive exhibitions over four floors in a new-build Renzo Piano building. Responsible for the concept and implementation of a strategy to increase the ‘holding power’ of traditional interactive exhibits. Responsibilities grew to include directing the institution’s research programme, which resulted in 28 published papers, 8 Master theses, and the initiation of 3 doctoral theses by the end of 1998.
