Throughout our lives we use just a fraction of
our brains thinking ability. We could withoutany difficulty whatever learn 40 languages, memorize a set of encyclopedias from A to Z
and complete the required courses of dozens of
colleges.
Pl note, curriculum
load is no issue. It
is the
psychological load
that matters

WHAT DID MY BRAIN ADVISE ME? (LESSON NO 2)
Challenge is my
food.. Give me
a challenging
task
Through CCE
provide a
challenging
environment
to the brain.

HOW DO I FACE THE CHALLENGE?
You dont
overcome
challenges bymaking them
smaller. Youovercome them
by making
yourselves bigger.
Have you grown
bigger than CCE?
12/19/2010

Schools need to innovate
and enlarge their
performance domains
instead of repeating what
the board does

WHEN IS LEARNING MAXIMAL?
Positive stressactivateslearning
Fear disableslearning.
Therefore high
stress and lowthreat are goodconditions forrelaxed learning.
Every teacher
gives me a
project. Howdo I cope?
Whataerobics is

body,
problem
solving is
to the mind

VINCENZO MALACARNE (18TH
CENTURY)
He trained a group of birds todo complex tricks, killed themall and dissected their brain
to observe.
He found that these birdshad more extensive foldingpatterns in specific regions ofthe brain than the untrainedbirds.

healthy
development of
the brain

CHARLES DARWIN
Charles Darwin notedsimilar differencesbetween the brains of thewild animals and theirdomestic counterparts Thebrains of the wild animalswere 15 to 30% larger thanthe tame domesticcounterparts.
These indicated the brain
wiring were different as theexperiences forced theanimals in the constantlearning modeExperiences empower
neural network

ARE YOU GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE
SAME THING? ASKED A PRINCIPAL!!!
(LESSON NO 3)
I am a
natural
innovator
Give everylearner an
opportunity
for
innovating

I AM AN INNOVATOR BECAUSE I
THINK
Thinking is a process of
re-engineering of the
existing neural network.
You may be a creative
thinker or critical thinker
You may be an adaptoror innovator. Believe me,
every one thinks
How will you
answer the
question: Is
there a separate
syllabus and textbook for thinking
skills?

HOW WOULD YOU HELP ME TO LEARN
BETTER? (LESSON -4)
Give me rich
and
stimulating
environment.
Formative
testing yieldsitself to a
variety of
opportunities
for rich and
stimulating
learning

WHAT IS A RICH AND STIMULATING
ENVIRONMENT?
When you provokethe curiosity
When you facilitateextendedlearning.
When you facilitateexperientiallearning ..
Rich and
stimulating
environment help in
improving the
quality of learning

13
8/8/2019 Dr G Balasubramanain
14/35
IS THERE A GUARANTEE THAT EVERYONE
WOULD LEARN IN A RICH AND
STIMULATING ENVIRONMENT?
Create a buffet of
learningexperiences
Recognize theindividualdifferences
Encourage peerlearning and teameffort
In an open
environment every
one constructs his or
her own learning

15/35
DO YOU NEED A TEACHER TO LEARN?
(LESSON -5)Yes. But they are
only my
facilitators. They
dont cause
learning. 90% of
my Learning is
non-conscious
Formative testing
offers unlimited
opportunities for
testing non-
conscious
learning

BRAIN LEARNS MORE THROUGH
SENSORY INTEGRATION
All five
senses teach
me !!(sixth sense is
my personal choice!!)
Co-curricular and
extra curricularactivities
empower
learning through
sensory
integration

DO YOU LEARN THE SAME WAY LIKE
YOUR FRIEND? (LESSON -6)
Sorry! My Learning
is unique. I form
my own learning
pathways
Find the
strength andcompetency of
each learner,
Do not evaluate
everyone with
the same tool.

WHERE DOES THE DIFFERENCE
COME FROM?
The biological organs remain the sameway, the tissues are the same and thenerves work in a similar fashion.
It is when you get to the smaller routes the brains equivalent of residential
streets, one-lanes dirt roads- theindividual patterns begin to show up
Every brain has a lot of these smallerpaths, and to no two people they areidentical
Mam, My CLA is

WE NURTURE SEVERAL
INTELLIGENCES
Sir, Please tell
me which of my
10 intelligences
you want to test?

CAN YOU RE-ENGINEER YOUR LEARNING?
(LESSON -7)Yes .I can. Have you
heard of Neuro-
Plasticity or
cognitive plasticity?
Researches in
neuro-plasticity
indicate the
possibility of
cognitive shifts and
hence enabling
learning in
differentiated
routes

WHAT HAPPENS DURING LEARNING?
(KANDEL NOBEL PRIZE 2000)
He observed that when peoplelearn something the wiring inthe brain changes
He demonstrated thatacquiring even simpleinformation involves physicalalteration of the structure ofthe neurons participating inthe process
Thus there is a continuousfunctional organization andreorganization of the brain.

22/35
WHERE IS THE INFORMATION
STORED? The information is literally sliced into
discreet pieces as it enters the brainand splattered all over the brain
It differentiates vertical lines fromdiagonal lines and stores them inseparate areas
If the picture is moving, the pictureand its motion are stored in differentplaces
The place where a vowel should gois stored differently from the vowelitself
Content is stored separately from itscontext/ container
We have no idea how the brainroutinely and effortlessly gives theimpression of stability

BRAIN IS A PATTERN MAKER (LESSON
7)
Give me
unordered and
chaotic
information. I willset them to order
Stereotypes in
learning leads to
boredom.
Enable an
interactive
classroom forquality learning

23
8/8/2019 Dr G Balasubramanain
24/35
HOW DO I ENCOURAGE LEARNING
THROUGH PATTERN MAKING?
Move towardsintegrated thinking
Encourage inter-disciplinaryapproaches toconcept
development
I am waiting for chemistry
teacher to teach chemical
energy. Physics teacher has
already done the first para
of the topic dealing withmechanical Energy.

BRAIN IS MEANING DRIVEN..(LESSON
9)
Meaning is more important tothe brain than theinformation..
Eg.,,
The husband died and thelady died.
The husband died and insorrow the lady also died.
Wow! There is a world
of difference between
the two.!
Defocus rote
learning and
enable
understanding

STEP 2: RE-ENGINEERING THE
MINDSET FOR CLASSROOM
PEDAGOGY Learn to move away from
right answer syndrome
Offer flexibility andopportunities for extendedlearning
Ask children how they wouldlike to do rather than telling
how they should do Value originality and
differential thinking
8/8/2019 Dr G Balasubramanain
32/35
12/19/2010
32
STEP 3 ENABLE EVERY LEARNER TO HAVE
A CLASSROOM OF HIS OR HER OWN..
Enable minds to move from
analytical thinking tocritical thinking and then tointegrated thinking
Understand the emerging
paradigm from evaluationto empowerment
8/8/2019 Dr G Balasubramanain
33/35
STEP 4 UNDERSTAND THAT CCE IS NOT A
