Research in Progress

"Flagship Stores: How Luxury Brands Create Brand Identity" (On-Going)Using qualitative research techniques to compare and evaluate the way in which luxuryflagship stores in three cities (New York, Tokyo and London) create and emphasize brandheritage and country of origin.

"FOREVER NOW: GUCCI’S USE OF A PARTIALLY BORROWED HERITAGE TO ESTABLISHA GLOBAL LUXURY BRAND" (On-Going)Luxury marketing in Italy has a long history. Gucci is an integral part of that history. This

article seeks to formulate the role that Gucci has played in the Italian and global luxuryindustry, and its strategies to play a strong role in the future.

"Halston and Calvin Klein : Fashion Icons. A Historical Perspective" (Writing Results)The decades from 1968 to 1988 stand as a landmark in the unfolding of fashion designers aswe know them today. This research compares and contrasts the characteristics of bothdesigner's marketing strategies and the outcome of those strategies that have pointed totheir success or failure today.

"In the Heart of Africa: A World Away from Poverty, the Luxury Market Thrives" (On-Going)Despite crushing poverty across the African continent, some Sub-Saharan countries areamong the fastest growing economies in the world. For the past half-century, it is poverty, not growth, which has epitomized Africa. However, today’s young Africans have a burningdesire to leave behind the post-colonial misery of their parents and grandparents. They areseeking out luxury products. They find these in glitzy malls, springing up across thecontinent, from Cape Town to Nairobi, Luanda to Lagos. This study aims to look at thegrowth in the luxury market, and to determine if this is a trend that can be sustained in thevolatile political environment of Africa.

"The Challenges and Opportunities of Marketing Luxury Goods in Brazil" (On-Going)Brazil has long been recognized as a member of BRIC, large emerging markets. However, only very recently has it has been seen to "emerge" in the luxury market. Today, Braziliansare swarming into luxury stores and shopping malls in North America and Europe, eager toparticipate in this consumer trend. This movement offers an excellent opportunity to globalluxury marketers to develop a foothold of their own in Brazil. Whilst many Brazilians may onlywindow shop as yet, a significant upper income group is eager to participate in thedeveloping shopping spree. Companies entering this market see enormous opportunities. However, there are also challenges in terms of different cultural norms and a threateningpolitical climate.
