ABOUT NITJ: Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of
Technology Jalandhar was established in the year 1987 as
Regional Engineering College and was given the status of
National Institute of Technology by the Government of India
on October 17, 2002 under the aegis of Ministry of Human
Resource Development, New Delhi. Now the Ministry of
Human Resource Development, Government of India has
declared the Institute as ―Institute of National Importance
under the act of Parliament-2007. The Institute has been
placed amongst top 50 engineering institutions of the
country as per the survey conducted by Mint-C Fore in the
year 2008. The survey was based upon vital parameters,
such as curriculum, quality of academic input, students
care, admission procedure, infrastructure, placements and
overall goodwill of the Institute. A large number of reputed
Industrial houses in the country visit the Institution and
select the final year students as Engineers/ Management
Trainees. As one of the National Institutes of Technology
(NIT), the Institute has the responsibility of providing high
quality education in Engineering, Technology and Sciences
to produce competent technical and scientific manpower for
the country. The Institute offers B Tech, M Tech, M Sc &
PhD programmes in the several disciplines of engineering,
technology and Sciences. Vision: To build a rich intellectual potential embedded with
interdisciplinary knowledge, human values and
professional ethics among the youth, aspirant of becoming
engineers and technologists, so that they contribute to
society and create a niche for a successful career. Mission: To become a leading and unique institution of
higher learning, offering state-of-the-art education, research
and training in engineering and technology to students who
are able and eager to become change agents for the
industrial and economic progress of the nation. To nurture
and sustain an academic ambience conducive to the
development and growth of committed professionals for
sustainable development of the nation and to accomplish
its integration into the global economy.
Department of Instrumentation & Control Engineering The Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering (ICE) commenced its Bachelor of Technology (B Tech) degree programme in 1990 with the intake of 30 students. Initially, the degrees were awarded by Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, subsequently, the Institute was affiliated to the newly set-up Punjab Technical University for the period July 1997 through October 2002. The Institute was accorded Deemed University Status w.e.f. October 17, 2002 under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi. Now the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has declared the Institute as ―Institute of National Importance‖ under the act of Parliament-2007.
Connecting the disciplines of electrical, electronics, mechanics, computer science and control engineering is the core competence of modern engineering. Many areas of specialization namely Process Instrumentation, Control Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Robotic, Wireless Networking etc. equips the engineers for quick adaptation to new fields of technology and new areas of employment. Training students in all these areas is an uphill and challenging task. Thus the ICE curriculum provides a broad insight into state-of-the-art methods for this interdisciplinary combination reinforced by research. Further specialization is realized through the technical electives. Therefore, every effort has been made while developing curricula to ensure full cognizance of all value elements among students. A holistic approach has been adopted while framing curriculum, updating infrastructural facilities and improving coaching methods. The teaching scheme has been enriched by the valuable inputs of experts of respective fields from prestigious institutions / organizations such as IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi, R&D organizations like CSIO and leading industries of the region.
The Department has started M Tech (Full Time) Degree Programme in Control and Instrumentation Engineering w.e.f. July, 2006 and M Tech (Part-Time) Programme w.e.f. July, 2010. The Department has also started Ph D Programme in 2005 in the areas of Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics and Wireless Networking. The Department is consolidating its efforts to promote industrial research and consultancy in appropriate areas of Instrumentation and Control Engineering. In addition to Ph D programme, the current intake for B Tech is 93 students and MTech is 28 students.
The mission, we follow in our research, teaching and technology is the development of technology for the benefit of mankind. According to this motto, students of many different academic and cultural background study and work together in teams. The teaching of methodology and the logic of engineering – ―learning to think‖- is a key aspect of education in the department. This is the way knowledge keeps pace with rapid technological advancements. This sound theoretical foundation is rounded off by a well-balanced mixture of practical application in projects and thesis work. Facts and Figures 2014: Funding: MHRD, Govt of India

Upcoming Plans
1. Department plans to upgrade all the Basic Lab Equipments keeping in view the increase intake for B Tech/ M Tech/ PhD admissions.
2. The new building of the Department has been finalized as top three floors of upcoming ECE Block.
3. The 01 International and 02 Short term Courses are under active consideration during 2016-17.
4. Keeping in view the up gradation of B Tech / M Tech teaching scheme the lab class curriculum is under revision.
5. The proposals for accreditation of BTech and MTech programme have been submitted.
6. Active efforts are being made to implement the salient features of the revised teaching and
examination scheme as under:-
(a) The course work of the 3rd semester has been adjusted in the 1st and 2nd semesters to enable the students to carry out their dissertation work in the 2nd year. This will enable the students to take up industry related problems and from other organizations/institutions for a wider variety of dissertation topics.
(b) The option of one interdepartmental elective course is made available to the students in the 1st and 2nd semesters. This will enable the students to opt for more options in the elective category to pursue their area of interest.
(c) As per the prevalent practice in most of the IITs, the elective list of M Tech has been synchronized with the elective list of B Tech final year. It will enable the Department to optimally utilize the faculty as now onwards B Tech students will be able to opt for departmental electives offered in the M Tech Programme and vice-versa.
(d) New courses like Smart Sensors and Sensor Networks and Industrial Automation etc. have been introduced as electives.
(e) Further, it has been agreed upon that invited lectures should be arranged regularly from the industry & academics/alumni for general as well as academics in nature.
(f) Keeping in view the faculty training and updates, advance lectures/workshops (03-04 days) from persons of eminence in Control and Instrumentation may be arranged as and when needed.
7. Most of the Faculty Members have completed their PhDs in the last few months and planning for the submission of research projects under various GOI schemes.
8. The PhD intake is likely to be doubled in July, 2016 admissions.
