About the Author Dr Aubrey Jones came lo Wal-

lace in 1983 to serve as pastor of the First Baptist Church where his tenure scoped a period of SL years Jones was very instnnncn-tal in helping the church grow spiritually and physically A new portion of the education bui lding was erected during his pastorship

Jones also did another coura-geous uplifting job for his com-munity He was a volun teer chap-lain at the Wallace Police Depart-ment serving in that capacity for six years and being on call 24 hours a day His job entailed coun-seling ln Crisis Interventionmiddot and he also helped the police person-nel with problems that arose per-sonally and on the job

This program was organized about 15 years ago said Chief Bobby Maready Weve called on the chaplain a lot durinp those years We get calls about ri is situations such as domestic vio-lence suicide rape criminal activity we even have those in-carcerated that would like lo speak to a chaplain we honor their re-questsmiddot

Maready fur ther explained We send chiplains to the J u stice Academy on studies in crisis in-tervention These self-sacrificing individuals are vitaI lo our per-sonnel and to our community at large

When Jones call number 21 O came over the radio he was ready to handle any situtation go any-where in the middotname of the Lord

Dr Jones said he had to thank his church for allowing him to be able to do something he felt made him grow more spirttually as a Christian This work was chal-lenging It was a great blessing to me it enabled me to tell others about the love of Christ and r ach the people I probably would n ot have come in contact with other-wise During my tenure as chap-lain Ive seen some bad thmg but more importantly good came from these upheavals Ive s hared laughter joy and tears with the people I came in contact with but I knew it was a ministJy that needed to be proclaimed it opened doors Jones expressed Min all the times I went out in U1e field or witnessed at the tempo-rary lock-u p I never encountered many who were not interested in their soul and their forgiveness of sin We as Christians know who Christ is and know He is true yet nonbelievers wish they could be-lieve

lace in 1983 to serve as pastor of the First Baptist Church where his tenure scoped a period of SL years Jones was very instnnncn-tal in helping the church grow spiritually and physically A new portion of the education bui lding was erected during his pastorship

Jones also did another coura-geous uplifting job for his com-munity He was a volun teer chap-lain at the Wallace Police Depart-ment serving in that capacity for six years and being on call 24 hours a day His job entailed coun-seling ln Crisis Interventionmiddot and he also helped the police person-nel with problems that arose per-sonally and on the job

This program was organized about 15 years ago said Chief Bobby Maready Weve called on the chaplain a lot durinp those years We get calls about ri is situations such as domestic vio-lence suicide rape criminal activity we even have those in-carcerated that would like lo speak to a chaplain we honor their re-questsmiddot

Maready fur ther explained We send chiplains to the J u stice Academy on studies in crisis in-tervention These self-sacrificing individuals are vitaI lo our per-sonnel and to our community at large

When Jones call number 21 O came over the radio he was ready to handle any situtation go any-where in the middotname of the Lord

Dr Jones said he had to thank his church for allowing him to be able to do something he felt made him grow more spirttually as a Christian This work was chal-lenging It was a great blessing to me it enabled me to tell others about the love of Christ and r ach the people I probably would n ot have come in contact with other-wise During my tenure as chap-lain Ive seen some bad thmg but more importantly good came from these upheavals Ive s hared laughter joy and tears with the people I came in contact with but I knew it was a ministJy that needed to be proclaimed it opened doors Jones expressed Min all the times I went out in U1e field or witnessed at the tempo-rary lock-u p I never encountered many who were not interested in their soul and their forgiveness of sin We as Christians know who Christ is and know He is true yet nonbelievers wish they could be-lieve

From my point of view only two things were missing that day you (if you wertnt there) and the sages rocking chair For sure I middotn never forget the first time I was privi-leged to isit Dr Jones Yo see I ldt Wallace in late 74 having been the pastor of the Wallace Baptist Church - check the name - for lt bout five vcars Sometime be-t ween my pistorate and Dr Jonesmiddot the congregation changed it names to FIRST Baptist Church This I thought was both strange and interesting Strange because I d idnmiddott know there was a Second Baptist Church anywhere around Interesting because in spite of the new name the people had middotailed a man of God who could

really preach and who was used of God to lead them in l he building of lt1 111agni11cent new educational facility a task I failed to pull off ltluring my tenure

At last I was going to talk face to foce wiih this highly respected pastor Yes the then pastor of the -First Baptist Church~ I saw him through the office door He rose slowly and deliberately form his desk middotchair The door opened We ltchanged greeting He offered me a seat but I learned later it wasnt his favoriti- chair an ordinary wooden rocking chair into which he lowered himselfvith an a lmost ina11d1blc sigh as if to say Oh joyl I can sil I can rock again Each rock seemed to produ ei-1 her an on-target query or apl response I shall never forget Re-gardless of the seriousness or the lightntss of our conversation this secmingly shy unassuming man neYcr missed a rock Vhats more I believe he really as at-tentlveand heard everything I said I belieYe he renected on lt as one whose desire it was lo be an alert and sensitive participant in what to me was a most significant dia-logue Dont we all like to be heard
