Division of Conducting and Ensembles
A. Professional Development: In my previous academic appointments at Sam Houston State University and Luther college, and now at the University of North Texas, I have maintained a highly active conducting schedule as both a performer and clinician. In addition to performances for juried conference such as North Central ACDA, and extensive touring performances with the Luther College Nordic Choir both domestic and abroad, I have been especially active as a guest conductor for high school choral festivals, conducting all-state choirs in Wisconsin, Illinois, North Dakota, Michigan, Mississippi, Minnesota, and Texas Private School All-State in the past few years. I will guest conduct Virginia All-State in 2019. My guest teaching opportunities have led me to South Korea, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee in addition to extensive work in Texas. In 2016, I served as the conductor of the Southwest ACDA Collegiate Honor Choir, and later this spring I’ll be teaching in a choral conducting workshop at UMKC, serving as a clinician in New York City with Choirs of America, guest conducting the Kentucky ACDA Collegiate Honor Choir and University of Louisville Symphony, and conducting the High School Honor Choir for the Southern Division of ACDA. Since student recruiting and outreach is listed under Professional Development for our division, I would point out that I have been extremely active in this area through numerous clinics, festivals, workshops, and the founding of a high school choral invitational for UNT. Ongoing work with our voice and opera faculty and Director of Admissions is proving to move us forward in reaching our goals for both undergraduate vocal recruitment, and graduate choral conducting recruitment. This year’s applications numbers reached 40, 8 more applicants that the precious year.
B. Teaching: My teaching responsibilities have changed considerably in recent years, having transition from a liberal arts college, where the focus was purely upon undergraduate teaching to a research intensive institution, with a heavy expectation of graduate teaching. I am challenged and invigorated by this new opportunity. I am seeking to become ever more structured in my guidance of our choral conducting majors, seeing then through their recitals and dissertation work. I have felt that our choral conducting majors have, on the whole, made very fine progress in their conducting and to their rehearsal technique. I believe that my private conducting lessons have gone very well, and the addition of the Conductor’s Chorus has greatly enhanced the rehearsal training that we are able to offer our graduate students. I believe that the UNT A Cappella Choir is making consistent improvement, moving each semester closer to the musical and tonal ideals for which we are striving. I look forward to the opportunity to prepare the Grand Chorus for the Verdi Requiem this semester.
C. Service: I have had the opportunity, during my brief tenure at UNT to serve on the search committee for the choral music education faculty position. I believe we did exceedingly well with that search. I was recently elected to the COM PAC committee. I have worked closely with colleagues in the Conducting/Ensemble Division as well the Voice to refine our shared calendar. I have been working with numerous faculty and staff to develop a new choral rehearsal schedule for the choral program, still pending approval. Whether considered part of “Professional Development”, “Teaching”, or “Service”, the administrative duties of the role that I play in the College of Music are very substantial. I am mindful that over the first several semesters of my work here, I will become increasingly more proficient at accomplishing the necessary tasks, as well as advancing the choral program through my leadership and collaboration with other faculty.
