Letter from the SUPERINTENDENT
Greetings!
The goal of the Superintendent’s
Annual Report is to identify events and
accomplishments of the previous
school year. This report provides a
division-wide report regarding the state
of our school division. We have a lot
to be proud of in Brunswick County
Public Schools. This report highlights
several student academic and extra-
curricular accomplishments. As
always, we aim to be transparent; therefore, you will find
information regarding our accreditation, chronic absenteeism,
graduation rate, per pupil expenditures and other pertinent
information as we report on the state of the school division from
the lens of the 2018-19 academic year.
Brunswick County Public Schools (BCPS) is committed to
maximizing student success and opportunities for growth that will
result in improved student outcomes. We understand the necessity
to continue the trajectory of upward mobility. Please note that the
annual report for the 2019-20 (current academic year) will not be
available until fall of 2020.

BCPS Student Spotlight: Jahmya McLeod-Walker, a (14) year old freshman at Brunswick High School this school year, was one of eight students nominated for the National Youth Leadership Forum from Russell Middle School. She was the only representative from her school and the division to attend this summer. The forum was a real life college experience. Jahmya stayed in a campus dormitory, worked in their laboratory, and utilized all of their resources. During her stay at St. John's campus, her studies consisted of medicine, robotics, and criminal justice. This experience advanced Jahmya’s knowledge in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. She believes that it has prepared her for the possibility of many career opportunities. During this time, she met new people, learned new things, and had an experience of a lifetime.
BHS Junior, Scarlett Raney served as a Senate Page during the 2018 session of the Virginia General Assembly. In addition, Scarlett attended Wellesley College during the "One Wellesley Summer" in August, 2018 and she was selected as one of nine Virginia high school students to attend the 2019 Virginia Youth Education Summit in Richmond. Scarlett was awarded a Brunswick Shining Star award in 2019 and was named a 2019 "Changemaker" by the Brunswick County Democratic Committee for her service as a Senate Page and her participation in the Brunswick High School "We the People" program.

The J.S. Russell Middle School Eighth Grade Community Service Project was a success. This year, students handed out HOPE Baskets for Thanksgiving to local residents. The word hope stands for Helping Our Precious Elderly. The students visited the homes of three amazing senior citizens and provided them with everything they would need to have a beautiful Holiday meal. The HOPE basket included a turkey, ham, and all the fixings! Kudos to the Russell Middle School Lions.
BCPS Community News: Our Second Grade students at ROSE received a visit from Mr. Jones (Board of Supervisors Member) and Mr. Harrington (Community Leader) this week. During their visit, the students enjoyed learning about the 2018 Feed Va Day of Action. Mr. Jones & Mr. Harrington read the book The Gigantic Sweet Potato written by Dianne de Las Casas. Sweet Potato Day was held at Red Oak-Sturgeon Elementary School on September 13, 2018. #BrunswickStrong #BCPSVA
ROSE School Beautification Project - On Beautification Day, volunteers worked on the campus beautification and cleanup project at ROSE. The mission was to improve the physical beauty of the campus to reflect the value of academic success by showing students that the school and greater community values a comfortable learning environment.
