We have now uploaded a second draft program to the website and I would urge all skippers and crews to take a look and send any final feedback before this is ratified by REX. Our Winter and Short-handed series are now underway. To date our weather has been mostly benign with plenty of opportunities to enjoy typical flat water winter racing. If you haven’t nominated for a series please remember that casual entries are always encouraged so why not get the crew together for a one off-sail during the cooler months? The Plympton Cup on June 16th could be an ideal opportunity perhaps. Sadly we finally say farewell to Jess this month as she leaves the office to commence her six-month Maternity Leave. I know I speak on behalf of all Racing Members when I wish Jess and Adam our very best for the coming months. As mentioned in previous correspondence Jon Henschke will be taking on some of Jess’ Race Office duties in the interim but please refer any urgent messages to me or other REX members if possible. Jon is building up his knowledge of TopYacht and the basic Race Office procedures but inquiries of a more technical nature (ie SI’s/NOR/HANDICAPS etc) are best referred to REX. Our AGM is slated for Friday July 26 th where we will be re-electing our Racing Association Committee. If you would like to nominate please download the form from our Racing Documents section of the Club website and forward to Craig Evans or Reception as soon as possible. We will release our final program and announce the REX for 2013/14 season at the AGM and I hope that many of you will attend. TRACI AYRIS TRACI AYRIS RACING CHAIR RACING CHAIR

Hello Racing Members,

A final column from me before I embark on the next

exciting chapter of my life. Most of you would know

that Friday 31st May is my last day in the Race Office

for the year, but I will be back in January 2014 to

take the helm once again, just with bigger bags under

my eyes and baby vomit on my clothes! Once again,

thank you all for the well wishes and kind words I have

received over the past few months.

Now, onto things racing related!

You should all be aware that the DRAFT program is

available for comment on the website. If you have any

feedback, p lease direct it to Wi l l iam

([email protected]). The volunteer programming

committee work hard to take in everyone’s comments

when planning the program and we thank you for your

constructive feedback on this.

We have a few events coming up over the Winter

Months to put into your dairies: the RSAYS Plympton

Cup (16 June), the Short-handed Destination Race to

Pt Vincent (6-7 July), the Racing Association AGM

926 July), and PASC’s Icebreaker Series and Port Line

Cup (3-4 August).

And that’s it from me until next year! Take care of

yourselves and enjoy your racing until I see you again!

SEASON 2012SEASON 2012--13 PRESENTATION NIGHT13 PRESENTATION NIGHT

Presentation Night for Season 2012-2013 was held at the CYCSA’s Horizon Function Room on Friday 3rd May 2013, with 175 Racing Members and guests in attendance.

The Racing Executive always tries our best to provide top notch entertainment in an effort to break up the formal aspects of the evening, and this year we turned once again to our friends at Ding Productions who have provided us with such beauties as the Singing Chefs, Cabaret Queens, and of course, who could forget last year’s Burlesque Act with Sarah Lloyd from The Voice.

This year they came up with the goods again in the form of two of Adelaide’s leading musical theater voices, Mark Oates and Andrew Crisp who treated us to some amazing Broadway tunes.

Representatives from our valued major sponsors Phil Hoffmann Travel, Port River Marine, Yalumba, and Penfolds were all in attendance and, alongside special guests William Strangways, Richard Fidock Jnr, Club Commodore Geoff Catt and Club President Andrew Saies, assisted with the presentations to the lucky winners.

The evening ended with the band ‘All About Her’, and many members hit the dance floor. I think we can call it yet another successful Presentation Night, and the Racing Executive congratulates all of our winners, and thanks all of our boats who competed in the various series of Season 2012 -2013, and we look forward to another action-packed program next year.

CREWPERSON OF THE YEARCREWPERSON OF THE YEAR

YACHT OF THE YEARYACHT OF THE YEAR

ROB HUMANROB HUMAN The crewperson of the year award is awarded to the crew member

who shows the most skill and commitment as a crewperson. For

the 2012/2013, Rob Human was awarded the crewperson of the

year after being nominated by his skipper, Andrew Saies. Rob’s

knowledge, ability and experience makes him an outstanding sailor

in all facets of the sport. He has been a key part of Two True and

it’s success in 2012/2013 and in all previous seasons.

In the 2012/2013 season, Rob has taken a leadership roles in all

areas including crew organisation and recruitment, boat

preparation and racing setup, boat maintenance, on water

trimming and boat handling. Rob has also filled in many

positions when Two True were short of crew, including

Helmsman, Tactician and he had even been seen in front of the

mast! His skill as mainsail trimmer is legendary and his passion and

commitment to offshore racing, particularly the Sydney to Hobart

is unequalled in this state.

As well as these many roles, Rob has gone out of his way to help

assist on a number of other CYCSA boats. When Two True were

not competing, Rob helped out Another Planet, Shining Sea and

White Knight as a trimmer for races. All of Rob’s efforts on and off

of the water this season are appreciated by all and have

deservedly earned him the Crewperson of the Year award for the

2012/2013 season.

Shining Sea had a outstanding season, consistently finishing in the top 3 places. Some of Shining Sea’s best results include, 1st IRC and PHS in the Offshore Series, 1st PHS in the Club Inshore Series and 1st Sydney 38 in the Adelaide to Lincoln. As well as these results, Shining Sea has come 2nd in SA IRC Championships, The Great Southern Regatta and The Premiers Cup as well as being part of the CYCSA winning team in the Adelaide-Lincoln. Shining Sea also entered in every Inshore and Offshore race.

The success that Shining Sea has had in the 2012/2013 season as well as their development and dedication to the Racing Association, has earned them the award of the Yacht of the Year for season 2012/2013.

Sunday 19th May 2013.

Run by CYCSA (Windward / Leeward)

It was an overcast day with a forecast of 5/10 knots NE in the morning, moving to 10/15

knots NNW by early afternoon, and fading later.

At 11.30 CYC1 was situated about 2 miles west of the Largs Jetty to accommodate the light

north-easterly breeze. At around about 1150 the Race Officer for the day John Gibson put

the start sequence on delay due to the light breeze swinging 60/90 degrees between NE

and NW. At 1210 the breeze appeared to settle down and a course of 330 degrees was laid

(2 laps, Division 1: 1.8nm and Division 2 -1.4nm).

At the 1220 start time for Division 1 we had 2.5 knots of wind from 355 degrees and a

small outgoing tide, with the same for Division 2 at 1225. It was frustrating for all starters

trying to make progress to windward. Approximately 20 mins into the race the breeze

picked up to 5 knots from 350 degrees, much to the enjoyment of the fleet however a few

of the heavier cruiser/racers were still struggling and it appeared that the whole fleet may

find it difficult to complete 2 laps.

At 1305 the decision was made to shorten the race to 1 lap. CYC1 was hard pressed to get

into position in time as the spinnakers were approaching however all went well and all

starters got a result apart from the couple who withdrew. Ironically, as the bulk of the fleet

went through the finish line the breeze had strengthened to 8 knots from 330 degrees

(strongest for the day). The last few had only 6 knots and it dropped even more and went

back to the NE by the time CYC1 was approaching the Marina entrance at approx 1430.

On Sunday 19th May 2013, John Chatham, the guru of the AMS / SMS Rating System) came from

Melbourne to the CYCSA to spread the word on the merits of both rating systems. The seminar kicked

off at 4.30 pm with a PowerPoint Presentation to a small, enthusiastic group of boat owners. The

presentation was followed by a Question & Answer session with many excellent questions.

Although only 11 people turned up, those in attendance found the concept interesting & are quite

keen to get a division up & running for the 2013/14 summer season.

The certificates are current from the 1st of October to the 30th September, so they could also be used

in the Winter Series if required.

Yachts that attended and showed interest were:

Another Planet, Alliance, Vertigo, Outrageous (RSAYS 44.7), Rock On, Kinetic Energy, White Knight,

Troppo, & Mighty Fine Lyons. There are now 7 Sportsboats in SA with a current SMS rating .

Sam Gaylard (PASC) is the current SMS State Measurer.

IRC REPORT IRC REPORT We finished off the season with 34 current certificates, a huge improvement on last year’s

26. New to SA this year were Concubine (Beneteau First 40), Nimue (Buzzard Bay 25),

Sextant (X 34), Speakeasy (Farr 1104), Horopito (J111), Vertigo (Mumm 30), Liesl (Beneteau

40.7) and Arcadia (Masram 920).

From Thursday 9th - Saturday 11th of May, I attended the annual IRC Measurers seminar

held at Royal Brighton in Victoria. As usual it was very informative with updates on rule

changes and practical sessions on pull down tests for sports boats and inclination of keel

boats.

Tim Cowan also attended the seminar and will become a Yachting Australia IRC Measurer

after a short period of practical experience.
