CONTACT DOWNTOWN KINGSTON! NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2015 HOLIDAY WRAP 2014 Another holiday season has come and gone in downtown Kingston! Here are some highlights: the season started off with the spectacular Greater Kingston Santa Parade. Parade participants and attendees all reported an increase in holiday spirit following the parade! Santa continued to bring his magic downtown every Saturday leading up to Christmas at Santa in the Square. The results were exciting again this year in the Window Wonderland competition. Participating businesses did an incredible job decorating their store fronts. Congratulations to Send in the Clowns for winning Best Overall! Pewter Collectibles were wildly popular again this year! The tradition continued with another five ornaments released: Millan Building (53-55 Princess St), Holy Name of Jesus Parish Church, The J.K. Tett Centre, The Phoebe and Sir John’s Public House. Thank you to our sales outlets this year: Grand Theatre, Kingston Community Credit Union and Rogers K-Rock Centre. REMINDER: SNOW AND ICE Let’s work together to keep our sidewalks clear of snow and ice this season! Just a friendly reminder to business owners to keep sidewalks clear and safe and to remove any overhanging icicles from their buildings. Please ensure the sidewalks in front of your business are shoveled and that sand or salt is used to prevent them from becoming slippery. Sand and salt products are relatively inexpensive - they can be purchased from a number of downtown businesses. For vacant buildings, it is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure safe passage for pedestrians. Bylaw enforcement officers will be on the street and business owners who do not comply may face a fine of up to $5,000. To report unsafe conditions, contact the City of Kingston directly at 613-546-0000 or email [email protected] There are also a number of snow removal companies currently operating in Kingston. Please see Snow Removal in the Yellow Pages for a complete listing of companies offering this service. REFOCUS ON MAINTENANCE We have been working with the City to make improvements to the overall look and feel of the downtown, through a new program titled Refocus on Maintenance. This program is a partnership between the BIA, various city departments, our downtown businesses, residents and the general public. The DK! office is currently working on branding for the new program, marketing materials, and information sheets for businesses and tenants. Bylaw officers’ patrols will also be done on a more frequent basis, and there will be charges for infractions. Look for more information in our upcoming weekly email updates or contact [email protected]

HERITAGE WEEK AWARDS This year marks the 26th year of the annual Heritage Week Awards, a partnership between the Frontenac Heritage Foundation and Downtown Kingston! Nominations for the awards honouring the “best historically sensitive renovations or development of commercial property” in the downtown core are now being accepted. These awards recognize the efforts of downtown property and business owners who have invested in both our heritage and our future over the past year by restoring, rebuilding and maintaining the beautiful building facades that make Kingston famous! Last year, our award recipients were 62-66 Brock St (Kingston Olive Oil Company) and 122 Princess St. (now Dollar Tree).
