  • FR. MATT’S PEN

You are invited! You are invited to a meal. The meal that you are invited to is free and promises to be the best meal you have ever had. This meal will begin with a social time of meeting the guests you are about to share this meal with; some guests you will know well, some will be people that you have met a time or two, and some of the guests you are going to meet for the first time. It will be a friendly gathering and in this friendly gathering there will be appetizes to wet the appetite, something salty, sour, sweet, and savory. A foretaste of the good things that are about to come.

At the appointed time the host will ring a bell to call you and your fellow guests to table. A long table, with nice comfortable chairs, at each place there will be multiple plates, cups, and pieces of silver-ware. Once everyone is seated you will be served a salad with a vari-ety of fresh crisp vegetables and dressed with a savory dressing, along with freshly baked bread right out the oven and butter that melts instantly into every nook and cranny. After the salad and bread will come the main course. The main course will feature your favor-ite protein cooked to perfection; it will melt in your mouth. Also, on the plate there will be the right balance of starch and warm vegeta-bles to compliment the protein. Be sure to save room for dessert, as this meal will end the way that all meals should end with dessert, a dessert that is sweet and rich but not too sweet or rich but exactly right to bring the meal to its close. As you eat, and physically nourish your body you will also nourish your spirit as you and the invited guests have a lively conversation with everyone talking and enjoying each other’s company. After everyone has finished eating you and the invited guests will return to your homes. This is the dinner you are invited to enjoy, are you coming?

Some hear this invitation to this free dinner, it sends your mouth watering and say “absolutely, I am coming, when is it?” Still others hear about this invitation and are skeptical, they say, “sounds too good to be true, and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, nothing is really free, there is always some catch, no I am not com-ing”. Still others will say “as good as the dinner sounds and as much as I would like to eat the meal, I am on a diet and I cannot come”. Still others will say they just cannot attend.

In our scriptures today we hear of an invitation to a feast. Isaiah speaks about how the best food will be provided. Jesus speaks of a king hosting a wedding feast for his son. The king prepares the best spread for the occasion as we hear the “calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready” Matthew 22:4. The king dispatches the servants to summon the invited guests to come to the feast and the invited guests refuse to come and we hear the king’s frustration. Each time we come to Mass, each time we receive the Eucharist we come in response to an invitation to eat the best food that nourishes, sustains, and satisfies our lives.

While we are sustained, nourished and satisfied, we also share the king’s frustration as there is empty space in our church for others to share in this feast. Some of the empty space we know is because we are in the middle of a pandemic and it is best that they do not join us. Still others choose not to be come because it sounds too good to be true. Or they choose not to come because of a past hurt, they have been there but did not get nourished, or for some other reason. Still our call as the Lord’s servant is to go out and to continue to invite the guests to this feast. Who is the Lord calling you to invite?

    REGIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

World Mission Sunday Collection, October 18 - For next weekend’s mission collection, please support our fellow Catho-lics in 1,100 mission dioceses worldwide through the Holy Fa-ther’s Pontifical Mission Societies. Your generous donation is appreciated more than ever this year as the COVID pandemic is having a deadly effect on many of our 1,150 mission dioceses worldwide. With their scarcity of medical supplies, facilities, and personnel, the need is very high. You may also give on-line though the Mission Office at: https://www.givecentral.org/pontificalmissionsocieties. Or mail a check to: Mission Office, Archdiocese of Cincinnati, 100 E 8th Street, Cincinnati, OH, 45202. Thank you for your generous gift that enables God’s love and hope to come alive.

October Respect Life Month - The U.S. bishops have reaf-firmed that “the threat of abortion remains our preeminent priori-ty because it directly attacks life itself, because it takes place within the sanctuary of the family, and because of the number of lives destroyed.” While they did warn us not to “dismiss or ig-nore other serious threats to human life and dignity such as rac-ism, the environmental crisis, poverty, and the death penalty,” they did give priority to upholding and defending our brothers’ and sisters’ most basic right—to live. (There were 20,123 abor-tions reported in Ohio in 2019. In Montgomery County 2,740 babies were aborted.) “Society as a whole must respect, defend and promote the dignity of every human person, at every mo-ment and in every condition of that person’s life. Each life is a gift from God and ultimately belongs to God. It is our responsi-bility to care for and protect human life, especially the lives of the most vulnerable among us.”
