    SCULPTURE IN THE STREETSCALL FOR ARTISTS

    Deadline for Application: April 12, 2013

    The Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID) views art as integral toour communitys fabric. Access to public art improves the quality of life, enhancesour neighborhoods identity, strengthens economic development and tourism, andenriches the spirit and pride of our citizens. The Downtown Albany BID is pleasedto invite upstate New York artists to apply for the 2013 Sculpture in the Streetsprogram.

    This years exhibit titled: All Signs Point to Downtown will restore old retail signs,also referred to as ghost signs, on the sides of our historic buildings retelling thestory of downtown Albany as the commercial hub for the Capital Region prior to thecreation of suburban malls.

    Now throughApril 12, 2013, the BID is accepting submissions from artists

    interested in participating. Painting will take place between mid-April to mid-Juneand an honorarium will be paid based on the size and complication of the retailsign.

    Eligibility

    Sculpture in the Streets is open to artists primarily residing within 150 miles ofAlbany, NY. Artists in all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply, but must be able to

    free hand letters, pay close attention to detail and line work. Previous workwould include murals, signs and stencil work. This project has a lot of focus onlettering and layout on a large scale.

    Artists must be comfortable painting 20 feet or more above ground. Artists must

    be able to re create from an image they are provided. No application fee is required.

    Guidelines for Exhibit

    The BID will match artists with a specific sign and building location.

    The BID will provide photos of the original artwork for the signs. Somelocations will be straight restoration, while others will be a recreation of ahistoric sign.

    The BID will provide scaffolding or lifts to access the building. Artists must

    attend and adhere to OSHA training rules for the length of the project. Painting must be completed within a two-six week window depending on the

    size and complication of the sign. Paint will be provided by the BID.

    The Sculpture in the Streets Committee will select 5-10 artists for the exhibitionbased on: Someone who is able to do hand done lettering, able to free hand letters in

    different fonts and styles. Previous work would include murals, signs and stencil work.

    The reputation and quality presented in the artists portfolio in meshing with the

    overall theme of 2013 Sculpture in the Streets. The ability to meet the deadline set forth per sign/location.

    Entry Procedure

    To apply, please submit the following: A completed Sculpture in the Streets application form.

    (attached, and available for download from downtownalbany.org)

    Artists should include a current bio which may become a part of the 2013Sculpture in the Streets promotional materials and walking tour maps. Three (3) paintings or artistic examples of the artists work, submitted for

    consideration. Images may be submitted in digital format (delivered on PC CD-ROM) or by e-mail attachment at [email protected] (viaMicrosoft Word or Power Point Presentation).o CDs. All CDs should be labeled with the artists name and telephone

    number and must: Be submitted on a PC-platform CD along with a hard copy of the

    application. Images files must be in .jpg or .pdf format. Each image must be in a stand-alone file (i.e. mypainting1.jpg)

    Current resume/CV and three (3) images of additional works.

    A stamped, self-addressed envelope, appropriately sized for the returnof application materials (if requested).

    o All e-mail attachments via Microsoft Word or Power Point

    Presentation may include up-to three (3) examples and should beappropriately labeled and adhere to the guidelines outlined.

    Honoraria

    Selected artists will receive an honorarium ranging from $500 - $2,500

    depending on the size and complication of the sign. Paint will be provided by the BID, but brushes and other materials needed

    to complete the sign will be the artists responsibility.

    Marketing & ProgrammingSculpture in the Streets will be heavily promoted to the public andprogrammed to encourage visitors and tours to the exhibition. Marketing andpromotional activities will include: Pre-exhibit and ongoing exhibit advertising

    POS collateral including posters and other signage throughout downtown

    Garden Party kick-off event (over 150 people attend and each artist will

    receive two free tickets a $100 value) Walking tour maps (10,000 printed and downloadable online) and historic

    tour tie-ins

    Extensive press and media outreach and coverage

    July 2013 Downtown Digest quarterly newsletter solely focused on exhibit

    (5,000 circulation) Coverage in Downtown Links monthly e-newsletter in May 2013 and

    beyond (+/-10,000 subscribers) Meet the Artists events

    Exhibit partnerships with the Albany County Convention and Visitors

    Bureau and the Albany Institute of History and Art Historic preservation award application to be submitted at the state and

    federal level

    Important Notes

    Insurance: The Downtown Albany BID will secure insurance protecting

    the BID and artists against claims of personal injury during the event. Artists understand that sculptures may be subject to damage or vandalism

    and that the Downtown Albany BID, the City of Albany or their assigns arenot responsible or liable for such occurrences.

    Workers compensation insurance will be provided.

    Artists will be required to enter into a professional service contract with the
