What’s New in Version 1.2 The Apple Watch has received its firstmajor software update, watchOS 2, withimprovements in many areas. I’ve up-dated the book to include new informa-tion: • Native apps: Under watchOS 2,

developers can write apps that runnatively on the watch itself, whichin some (but not all) cases translates to faster load times and additional features.

• Look ahead: You can now see the future as you turn the Digital Crownand view the complications on yourwatch face ①. I talk about this in Look Ahead with Time Travel.

① Look ahead with Time Travel.

• New faces: Choose from a selection of time-lapse animations or use yourown photos as the backdrop. SeePersonalize the Apple Watch Face.

• Wake up: Your watch can now be-have more like a bedside clock with Nightstand Mode.

• Digital Touch colors: Send your digi-tal touch drawings using multiplecolors in Connect with Friends UsingDigital Touch.

• More friends: You can now have more than one screen of friends available through the Friends button.I describe how to add friends, andmove friends from screen to screen in Edit the Friends Screen.

• Transit on the map: If you happento be in a city that Apple provides public transportation directions for,you can overlay that transit informa-tion over the Map app. See Viewinga Transit Overlay.

• Foiling thieves: A new feature in watchOS 2, Activation Lock, allowsyou to disable your watch if, for in-stance, it has been stolen, makingit impossible for anyone to use it un-less they know your Apple ID cre-dentials. To find out how this works, read Before the Watch Is Lost or Stolen.

• Face time: In addition to having thescreen remain on for 15 seconds af-ter you raise your wrist, you can nowspecify that the screen remain activefor 75 seconds. This will use more battery, but may make your watchmore fun to use, especially if you of-ten demo it. For configuration steps, read Wake Screen on Wrist Raise. Also see Stay Awake Longer.

• Wallet: The Passbook app is nowcalled Wallet. It still works in the same way, making it convenient toshow any barcoded ticket or loyaltycard from your wrist. It’s convenientto pay for coffee, get in to a movieor concert, or board a plane with a quick scan of your wrist. See Use Apple Pay and Wallet.

• Editorial adjustments: Now that the Apple Watch is readily available, I’veremoved the chapter about compet-ing watches. However, the informa-tion about activity trackers is now inExercise with the Apple Watch. I’ve also split the former, lengthy“Communicate with Friends” chapterinto two shorter chapters, Communi-cate with Friends and Communicate Using Mail.

Introduction Apple is hailed as a pinnacle of consumer electronics design, but it has also beenan unexpected driver of fashion. The iPod was notable for storing 1,000 songs in a device the size of a deck of cards, but one of its lasting impacts was to introduce white earbuds to nearly every public space. Wearing them now is so commonplacethat we don’t even think about it, yet a decade ago they were a fashion statement:I own an Apple product. Now, with the release of the Apple Watch, the company is making another fashion statement: Your personal technology can be more personal, and more distinctive. It’s not a sliver of glass you pull out of your pocket or bag. It’s a timepiece, a commu-nications center, and a connection to your personal information that you wear allthe time. Maybe you currently wear a watch, or perhaps you haven’t worn one for years, if ever. What’s the appeal of an Apple timepiece? The Apple Watch is an extension of the data you deal with every day. Without makingthe now-common-but-still-distracting motion of pulling out your iPhone, you cankeep up with notifications, your schedule, and reminders; interact with people via textmessaging or phone; reach out to other Apple Watch owners using the novel DigitalTouch features; track several fitness goals and record vital exercise informationgenerated by the sensors in the watch and in your iPhone; purchase items usingApple Pay; and much more. And you’ll look stylish while doing it. This book is your essential guide to the Apple Watch and its capabilities and possibili-ties. I’ve worn my Apple Watch every day since it was first publicly available. It has surprised, delighted, and, yes, occasionally perplexed me—it’s my job, after all, to beconfused and solve problems first, so I can guide you to the solutions. (If you’recurious, I bought a 42mm aluminum Apple Watch Sport model with the white band;I also separately purchased a black fluoroelastomer band, since it’s normally available only with the space gray-colored aluminum model.) This 1.2 version of the book is an update to the 1.1 version that was released soonafter the Apple Watch was available, which was written to get you up to speed on thewatch’s features, help you choose which model to buy, and share practical knowl-edge based on my on-wrist/hands-on experience. This update covers watchOS 2, thefirst major revision to the software that runs the Apple Watch and adds features suchas real third-party apps, custom complications on the watch face, and more. I’m excited about Apple’s foray into wearable devices, and I hope you are, too.

Understand the Apple Watch It would be easy to assume that the Apple Watch is like an iPhone for your wrist, butthat’s not really the case. The watch expressly emphasizes short, focused interactionwith your information. For example, on the watch you can receive text messages andcan send quick replies, but lengthy correspondence is best shifted to the iPhone. It’s important to understand this approach. We’re so accustomed to devices thatdemand our focus that it’s slightly jarring at first when the Apple Watch shuns theattention. Don’t be surprised if it takes a few days to adopt this mindset after youstart using the watch, even knowing about it ahead of time.

The iPhone Connection Although the device does feature a touchscreen, wireless communication, and amicroprocessor to run it all, the Apple Watch relies on a companion iPhone to betruly useful ①. Specifically, you need an iPhone 5, 5C, 5S, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, or 6S Plus running iOS 9 or later.

① The Apple Watch requires the assistance of an iPhone.

The core software functions of the Apple Watch—such as the clock andactivity tracker—are dedicated apps thatlive in the watch’s memory. However, for many features, the watch relies onwireless communication with an iPhone via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The watch piggybacks on the iPhone’sInternet connection and pulls GPS posi-tioning data from it. That means evenif you buy a lightweight Apple Watch Sport to track your runs, you still need to carry your iPhone along to record your route and better estimate the calo-rie burn during your workout. (You canhead out without the iPhone, but not alldata will be recorded. See Exercise with the Apple Watch.)

A companion app on the iPhone, un-surprisingly called Watch, controls thewatch’s Home app icon layout, whichfitness features are enabled, how mes-sages are displayed, and more. SeePersonalize the Apple Watch Face for more detail.

Note: The Apple Watch works only withan iPhone, not an iPad or iPod touch.

Charging the Apple WatchApple expects that the battery will lastfor 18 hours of normal use, so watchowners will charge the device once aday. (Exercise drains the battery faster; see The Heart of the Sensors.) I usuallyend up with about 50 percent powerleft at the end of the day, so Apple’sestimate is actually conservative. If the power level falls to 10 percent, the watch goes into Power Reservemode: everything is shut down exceptfor a basic digital readout of the time.(You can also switch the watch intoPower Reserve mode manually; seeRecharging.) The included charger attaches magnet-ically to the back of the watch, whilethe battery receives power via inductive charging (so there’s no exposed plugthat’s difficult to locate in the dark) ②.

Apple Pay and WalletThe Apple Watch has one additionalwireless technology besides Wi-Fi andBluetooth. An NFC (near-field commu-nication) radio enables the watch (whenit’s paired to your iPhone) to use ApplePay with NFC-based payment readers. Instead of swiping a debit or credit cardto buy groceries or other items, youdouble-press the watch’s side buttonand hold the watch near the reader. Apple Pay uses an encrypted token totransmit your payment info, so the in-teraction is as secure as it is convenient. Your cards also appear in the Walletapp on the watch, along with any loyal-ty cards or tickets that create scannablebar codes. With Wallet, you can pay forcoffee at Starbucks, gain admission tomany movie theaters, and even presenta boarding pass at the airport by scan-ning just your watch. See Use ApplePay and Wallet for details.

Note: For more on Apple Pay, read theTidBITS article How to Use Apple Pay.

② The charger attaches to the back of thewatch using magnets that position it correctly.

SecuritySpeaking of data safety, you can set apasscode, just like the iPhone. In fact, using Apple Pay requires a Passcode;if you turn off the passcode, your Apple Pay cards are removed and need to beset up again. When a passcode is set, the AppleWatch notices when it has been removed from your wrist, and locksautomatically. That prevents a thieffrom using a stolen watch for ApplePay. Activation Lock, a feature addedin watchOS 2, renders a stolen Apple Watch completely inoperable withoutyour Apple ID and password; seeBefore the Watch Is Lost or Stolen.

Longevity and DurabilityOne big unknown about the AppleWatch is how long it will last—is it like acomputer that is typically replaced afterfive years (or more), or is it more likean iPhone that you’re likely to replace every two years? Processors, memory, and other components improve rapidly, but if you’ve spent thousands on a goldApple Watch (or even hundreds for analuminum one), will you want to shellout the same amount for a newer ver-sion in a year or two? There’s no doubt the device itself will change over time—it will certainly be-come slimmer and the specs will im-prove—but my gut reaction is that theApple Watch is designed to last at leastthree to five years. Hopefully Apple isn’thobbling it at the outset, as it did theiPad with a small amount of workingmemory, and is instead using hardwarethat will continue to be responsive overtwo or three iterations of the software. Another possibility is that Apple Watchowners, perhaps over a certain pricethreshold, will be able to lease the cur-rent generation, or exchange a currentmodel for the next for a discount. The gold alone in an Apple Watch Editionis valuable, which the company could recycle to create new models.

In the short term, the materials thatApple is using to create the watchmodels seem durable. I base this on an article by Greg Koenig, who designs products at Luma Labs and is an expertat various manufacturing processes.Koenig looked at the types of metalin the watch cases and how they’re manufactured to come up with his ownanalysis: Apple Watch and durability: How tough are Apple's finishes? Also note that the Apple Watch carriesa water-resistance rating of IPX7, whichis 1 meter of submersion for up to30 minutes. Apple CEO Tim Cook has mentioned that he showers while wear-ing his watch, and others have testedthe device while swimming (which Iwouldn’t be comfortable with). It’s safeto say that neither sweat from a work-out nor getting caught in the rain willharm the watch.

10:09 to Cupertino Every photo of the Apple Watch onApple’s site shows the time as 10:09(and 30 seconds). Why? It’s actually anold watch marketing trick: When thehands are at 10 and almost-2, it conveysthe impression the watch is smiling. Sometimes visible times do have significance. In photos of the iOS homescreen, Apple keeps the Clock app setto 9:41, which is the time when theoriginal iPhone was revealed atMacworld Expo in 2007.

Choosing an Apple Watch With most of Apple’s products, choosing which model to buy involves evaluatingspecifications: Do you want a MacBook Pro with a 13-inch or 15-inch screen? Howmuch storage and memory will it have? How fast is the processor? With the Apple Watch, the device itself is identical across the range of models.Instead, the differentiator is the material used for the case and the display cover. Thewatch is available in three models: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and (the oddlynamed) Apple Watch Edition ①. You also get to choose the size and band.

The Apple Watch Sport has an an-odized aluminum case (using a customalloy that is 60 percent stronger than normal aluminum) and an Ion-X glassdisplay. Ion-X is stronger and morescratch-resistant than normal glass, butnot as protective as sapphire. The Sportcomes in silver, gold, rose gold, andspace gray aluminum finishes; the onlymodel with a black band is space gray.

Apple WatchThe singularly named Apple Watchmodel has a stainless steel case (available in regular steel or a darkerspace black tint) and a sapphire crystalsurface protecting the display.

① From left to right: the aluminum Apple Watch Sport, the stainless steel Apple Watch, and the luxeyellow gold Apple Watch Edition.

Apple Watch Sport Apple Watch EditionFor the flush buyer interested in makinga fashion statement, the Apple WatchEdition features an 18-karat gold casein a yellow or rose hue and a sapphirecrystal cover. Apple’s own metallurgists created theirown gold formulation that is twice ashard as standard gold. High-endwatchmakers develop custom mixesbecause gold by itself is fairly soft—that’s why people in old Westerns bitea gold nugget to determine if it isgenuine. Your dentist and I bothrecommend against chomping on anApple Watch.

Model Sizes Small or skinny-wristed people, rejoice! The Apple Watch will not look like aniPhone strapped to your arm. Eachwatch model is available in two physicalsizes, measured by screen height:42mm and 38mm ②. To get an idea of the size, downloadApple’s Watch Sizing Guide (PDF) or preview an actual-size rendition in theApple Store app on an iPhone or iPad: on the Shop screen, tap Apple Watchto view the options, tap a model, tapthe price (or Buy Now), and then tapthe Compare Case Sizes link ③.

Watch Bands A watch needs something to secureit to your wrist, and Apple offers several types of interchangeable bands, fromsweat-resistant fluoroelastomer sportbands in several colors to a luxurious Milanese Loupe. I won’t list them all here, because it’smore fun to browse them visually, buthere are a few important takeaways: • Mix and match: The bands slide into

notches at the top and bottom ofthe watch, meaning you can easily change them out depending on theactivity—a sport band while running,a leather classic buckle to go out todinner, for example.

• Easy adjustments: Many of thebands include magnets in the strap,so you won’t need to struggle to find a comfortable diameter. The stainless steel link band features buttons in several links to remove them; no special tools required.

• Matching accents: Bands for the Apple Watch Edition models areavailable with matching gold bucklesand connectors.

② The 38mm Apple Watch Sport is at left; the42mm size is at right.

③ View an actual-size preview of the watchsizes in the Apple Store iOS app.

Tip: Models that ship with the fluoro-elastomer band include a large andsmall lower segment to accommodatedifferent wrist sizes.

Apple has also released specificationsfor manufacturers to create third-partybands, which are plentiful.

Apple Watch PricingPricing starts at $349 for the 38mmApple Watch Sport, while the 38mmApple Watch starts at $549 and rangesup to $1,049; in all cases, add $50for the 42mm model. They can be purchased online or at an Apple Store.Apple also sells a stainless steelHermès model with special bands andan Hermès watch face, starting at$1,100. Pricing for the Apple Watch Editionstarts at $10,000 and goes up to$17,000. Availability is through “selectretail stores.” Apple also sells additional bands sepa-rately. You can peruse the configura-tions at the online Apple Store, as wellas in the Apple Store iOS app.

AvailabilityThe Apple Watch is off to a popularstart. Although supplies were limitedshortly after launch, most models andbands can be ordered online with mini-mal shipping times or bought at anApple Retail store (although Editionmodels are at only a few locations).

Left or Right Wrist? The Apple Watch can be worn on your left or right wrist by turning it so the sidecontrols face your fingers. A setting inthe Watch app on the iPhone rotates thedisplay. If you’re left-handed and preferthe watch on your right hand, the sidecontrols are still easily accessible byyour left hand. Flip ahead to Watch Orientation for more options.

Trying on a WatchIf you live near a retail Apple Store, youshould definitely visit the store and tryon various watches and bands ④.

④ Mix and match bands and watches at an Apple Store.

The models available to try on aren’tfunctional—they run a demo program, and are designed to give you an idea ofsize and weight. A handful of workingwatches are set up in special cases. When trying on a watch, pay attentionnot only to the face size, but also to how well the band wraps around your wrist. The Milanese Loop, for example, can be adjusted infinitely, but the sportbands have preset holes (try the othersport band segment for a slightly differ-ent hole alignment). I also suggest youtry to get a feel for weight as well ashow the watch feels when you’re typingor doing other activities (within reasonin an Apple Store). A few stores—far from all—offer AppleWatch Edition fittings, during whichyou’re whisked to a separate room, handed a bottle of water, and allowedto handle the gold models away fromthe bustling store floor.

Interact with the Apple Watch When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone, he explained that the ideal tool to use it wasnot a stylus or physical buttons, but our fingers. The responsiveness of the touch-screen made finger gestures—tapping, swiping, and pinching—the new language ofhow to interact with technology. But fingers are usually too big to do the same with awatch ①, so Apple incorporated additional interaction methods in the Apple Watch.

① Pinch-to-zoom on the Apple Watch obscures the face. Don’t worry, you won’t be doing that.

The Digital Crown What’s Digital about the Crown? Let’s start with the signature new con-troller, the knob on the side called theDigital Crown. A crown is a staple ofmechanical watch design, used to setthe time and, on some models, to windthe mechanism that keeps it running.

Turning the CrownTurning the Digital Crown scrolls con-tent on the screen, zooms in and outon the Home screen and when viewing photos or maps ②, and switches be-tween other visible options.

Pressing the CrownPressing the Digital Crown has variouseffects, depending on the context: • When the watch face is visible, a

single press of the Digital Crowndisplays the Home screen.

• At the Home screen, or while view-ing a notification or glance, pressingthe crown returns to the watch face.

What’s “digital” about the DigitalCrown? Instead of operating mechanicalgears inside the watch, the crown trans-lates rotary movement into digital datausing internal infrared LEDs and photodiodes.

② Turn the Digital Crown to zoom into a map.

• Pressing and holding the crown for asecond initiates Siri’s voice-activated interface.

• On the Home screen, you can rotatethe crown to zoom in to and launch the centered app (which is the watchface by default).

• Double-pressing the crown switchesbetween the last app you used andthe watch face.

The Side Button • Pressing the “side button” (Apple’s

name for the physical button next tothe Digital Crown) brings up a literal circle of friends ③ so you can Com-municate with Friends with text, voice, or Digital Touch.

• Double-press it to Use Apple Pay.

Interacting with the ScreenWhen you raise your wrist, the watchdetects the movement and activates the screen. You can also tap the screento wake the watch. The watch’s Retina display is a touch-screen, so you can tap or drag as youcan with an iPhone. In fact, you can usu-ally scroll with a finger instead of theDigital Crown if that’s more convenient. Apple has also added watch-specificviews called glances: swipe up fromthe bottom of the watch face (but not in other screens). A glance can reveal the day’s calendar events or music play-back controls, for example. Swipe leftor right to switch between glances.(Jump ahead to Glances for more on configuring these snippets of data.) Unlike most iOS devices, which don’tcare how hard you tap, the AppleWatch can tell the difference between a normal tap and a harder force touch: the screen registers pressure sensitivity. In the Maps app, for instance, a forcetouch brings up options such as asearch tool and list of contacts.

③ Pressing the button below the Digital Crownreveals your friends.

Stay Awake Longer Does the display go to sleep too quicklyfor your taste? A new setting inwatchOS 2 governs how long the screen is active when you tap it. On the watch or in the Watch app onthe iPhone, go to Settings > General >Wake Screen and under On Tap, chooseWake for 15 Seconds or Wake for 70 Seconds.

Swiping to Go Back Some screens have a link in the top-leftcorner to go back one level; sometimesthat tiny target is tough to hit ④.

④ It’s often easier to swipe left to right togo back one level instead of tapping the text in the top-left corner.

Instead, swipe from left to right to goback.

Talking to Your WristYou won’t find a virtual keyboard on thewatch to enter text. Siri, Apple’s voice-activated intelligent assistant, can besummoned by raising the watch andsaying, “Hey Siri,” or by pressing andholding the Digital Crown ⑤. You can request info, dictate messages, ask for directions, view or create calen-dar events, and do much of what Sirican do on the iPhone (since the watchis actually just relaying the stream ofdata via the iPhone to the Internet). And, yes, you can take phone calls; seeCommunicate by Phone.

Taptic FeedbackYou don’t always need a button ora screen to interact with the Apple Watch. It includes the Taptic Engine,Apple’s name for a linear actuator thattaps your wrist to provide feedbackwhen something happens, such asreceiving a notification. Unlike the vibration that a muted iPhone makes, which can shake a table, the Taptic Engine is subtle. The feed-back is contextual, too: for instance, when you’re led on a route in the Maps app, distinct taps indicate whether anupcoming turn is left or right. The Taptic Engine combined with aspeaker driver creates tactile feedbackfor actions such as force-touching the screen. The Taptic Engine is also great forpeople who miss calls and messagesbecause they don’t feel the iPhone’svibration in their pockets, purses, andbags. A small tap and quick glance atthe watch face identifies the caller.

⑤ Ask questions or request actions using Siri.

Siri Tip After you say, “Hey Siri,” keep goingwith your request; you don’t need towait for Siri to respond. For example, liftthe watch and say, “Hey Siri, what’s theweather like in Seattle this week?” with-out pausing.

Personalize the Apple Watch Face Since the Apple Watch is as much a fashion statement as it is a piece of technology, personalizing it goes beyond merely choosing the case material and watch band. ItsRetina screen can display digital, analog, and a even few whimsical watch faces.

Pick a Watch Face The Apple Watch offers several watchfaces, from a simulated traditionalchronograph to Mickey Mouse and histapping toes to an astronomical designthat lets you explore our solar system.Force-touch the current watch face to reveal other faces. Swipe to highlightthe one you want, and then tap to se-lect it ①.

Tip: You can set a photo or album as thewatch face, which I describe just aheadin Use Your Own Photos.

Customize the Face Some faces include elements (the prop-er term is complications) that you canadd or remove, while others offer theoption to change colors: 1. Force-touch the face and then tap

the Customize button. 2. Tap an outlined item to select it

and use the Digital Crown to scrollthrough the options ②. If anythird-party apps offer complica-tions, they show up as you scroll. Some faces include multiple cus-tomizations; in the figure, for exam-ple, swiping left (notice the indicatordots at the top of the screen; the leftdot is very light) highlights the entireinterface, and rotating the crownchanges the color of the interface.

3. Force-touch the screen to return to the face selector, and then tapthe face to make it active.

① Swipe left and right to reveal other faces.

② Choose a different set of information for the middle group, outlined in green.

Use Your Own Photos Any image in your iPhone’s Photoslibrary can be set as the watch face—even multiple photos in an album thatdisplay as a micro-slideshow. The watchgrabs the photos from the album yousync to the watch via the Watch app’ssettings (see View (and Capture)Photos).

Tip: Photos in your Favorites album onthe iPhone copy to the watch’s internalstorage for viewing by default. I don’tneed all my favorite photos for this task,so I created an album in Photos on the iPhone and added a dozen or so shots that would look good on the watch.

To put your own photo or album onthe watch face: 1. Force-touch the face and then

swipe to the Photo face. Or, touse the entire album, choose the Photo Album face and skip toStep 5.

2. Tap the Customize button. 3. Turn the Digital Crown to zoom

out and view all the images in thealbum ③.

4. Tap the photo you want to use.You can optionally use the DigitalCrown and your fingers to includeonly a portion of the image ④.

5. When you’re done, force-touchto return to the gallery of watch faces and then tap the face tomake it active.

When you wake the watch, the photoappears as the backdrop—if the imageis a Live Photo captured using aniPhone 6S or 6S Plus, it also moves. Forthe Photo Album face, a new photo ap-pears each time you wake the watch;tap the screen to view the next photo. Unfortunately, these two faces offerzero complications: All you get is thetime and date.

③ Choose a photo from the album that’ssynced to the watch.

④ To prevent the time from obscuring mydaughter’s face, I zoomed in and repositionedthe image.

Use ComplicationsThe complications on some facesprovide quick information, such as thecurrent temperature, but they aren’tstatic. Tap a complication to open arelated app. For example, tapping thetemperature launches the Weatherapp, the activity circles lead to theActivity app, and dates or listed eventsopen the Calendar app. The Astronomy face is particularly funfor space geeks. Normally it shows yourposition on the Earth and the currentsolar coverage. Tap the Moon button torocket to our sister satellite. Or, tap theSolar System button to view the planetsas they currently stand in circular rela-tion to one another ⑤.

Tip: Can’t remember which planet iswhich? Double-tap the screen to linethem up with their names.

The Chronograph face includes a stop-watch for immediate use, so you don’tneed to launch the Stopwatch app ⑥: • Tap the Stopwatch button at the top-

right to start recording time. • Tap the Lap button at the bottom-

right to track a second lap time; tapit again for additional splits.

• To stop recording time, tap the redbutton.

• Once you’ve stopped recording, toclear the results, press the Lap but-ton again.

Before you clear the times, you canview them in the other views within the Stopwatch app on the watch—force-press the screen to switch amongAnalog, Digital, Graph, and Hybridreadouts.

⑤ See the planets’ current orbits in the solarsystem view.

⑥ The Chronograph face doubles as an instantstopwatch without opening the Stopwatch app.

Set the Clock Ahead I love this little timekeeping detail. If youhave trouble arriving at events on time, you can change the visible display time. On the watch, press the crown to accessthe Home screen, tap the Settings app,tap Time, tap “+0 min,” and turn thecrown to specify how many minutesahead the clock should read—up to 59! This setting doesn’t affect when notifica-tions and alerts arrive; it’s simply an age-old way to fool yourself into thinking thecurrent time is later than it really is.

Look Ahead with Time Travel What’s happening later today? Youcould open the Calendar app, but ifyou already have a Calendar complica-tion visible, turn the Digital Crown toadvance the time. As you do, everycomplication updates, from the project-ed temperature to third-party apps. As you turn, a Time Travel badge indi-cates the time difference ⑦. Tap it toreturn to the present.

Tip: Rotate the Digital Crown in Astrono-my to view the Earth, Moon, or planetsat different times. In Solar, rotate the crown to view the sun’s position withlabels and times for events like sunrise and dusk. Tap the screen to return tothe current time.

Save a Custom Face You can save a custom face for later use. The Modular face, for example, packs in a lot of data, but perhaps on the weekend you’d prefer to view sun-rise and sunset information in the mid-dle of the face, and replace the batteryindicator with the stopwatch. I created aSimple variation that includes no detailsaround the edges, just the hands. To save a custom face: 1. Force-touch the screen to view the

faces and swipe all the way to theright to choose the New face.

2. Rotate the Digital Crown to findthe face, and tap to make it active.

3. Force-touch again. 4. Tap the Customize button and set

up the face as you’d like. To remove a saved face, force-touch toview it, swipe up, and then tap theDelete button that appears ⑧.

⑦ Look into the future with Time Travel.

⑧ Swipe up to delete a saved watch face.

Note: It’s possible to delete the facesthat originally came with the watch, incase you think you’ll only use a few. Youcan always add them again using theNew face option later.

Glances The Apple Watch runs apps, but often you don’t want to launch an app just to viewa snippet of information. Glances act as quick windows to that data and offer several convenient controls, much like Control Center does on the iPhone. Swipe up from the bottom of the watch face to reveal a glance ①. Swipe left or rightto switch among the installed glances; the dots at the bottom of the screen indicatewhich glance you’re viewing.

① Think of glances as a row of screens that live just below the watch face, ready for quick access.

In glances such as Calendar, tapping anywhere switches to the associated app.Others are interactive: Settings includes controls for enabling Airplane and Do NotDisturb modes, muting audio, and locating your iPhone; Heart Rate samples yourheartbeat (peek at the underside of the watch to view the sensors’ green bursts oflight); and Now Playing controls audio playback (see Control Media Remotely).

Install and Organize GlancesIn the Watch app on the iPhone, tapGlances and then tap Edit ②. From the Glances screen: • Remove a glance: Tap that glance’s

minus-sign button and then tapRemove.

• Add a glance: In the Do Not Include section, tap the glance’s green plusbutton.

• Adjust glance order: Drag thehandle icon to the right of an itemup or down.

You can also add or remove a glance inits app’s settings in the Watch app, viathe main My Watch screen (see Appsand the Apple Watch).

② Add or remove glances from the watch withthe app on the iPhone.

Tip: Up to 20 glances can be installed, but trust me, fewer is better. When youget to the last one, you have to swipe-swipe-swipe back to the beginning.

Apps and the Apple Watch iOS developers who create apps for the iPhone can create versions for the watch—remember, the watch communicates with the iPhone to retrieve data for many apps(see Understand the Apple Watch). Under watchOS 2, developers can write apps thatrun natively on the watch itself, which in some (but not all) cases translates to fasterload times and additional features. In fact, you may be surprised to find that manyapps you already own now have a watch component ①.

① This is just the beginning of apps on the Apple Watch.

Locate and Open AppsIn most cases, pressing the DigitalCrown displays the Home screen ②(the exceptions are when you’re view-ing notifications or glances). Slide your finger on the display to viewapps that are currently outside thescreen edges. • To open an app, tap it. • You can also turn the digital crown to

alternately zoom out to reveal all appicons, or to zoom in to open which-ever app is centered.

• Do it the hands-off way: Raise thewatch and say “Hey Siri, open app’s name.”

Tip: You can turn off the Home screen’s icon-resizing animation. In the Watchapp on the iPhone, go to General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion and turnthe option On. All the icons appear thesame size ③.

② The Home screen as it normally appears.

③ The Home screen with Reduce Motion on.

Customize the Home Screen App icons are ordered from the centeroutwards, with the watch icon alwaysanchoring the center spot. Arrangethem however you want, in two ways: • Touch and hold any app until all the

icons are gently vibrating; that appappears larger to indicate it’s select-ed. You can then move it to a new location. To move another app, touch and hold it until it’s selected. Note that this doesn’t require a forcetouch; simply touch the screen andwait a second. Press the crown when you’re donereorganizing.

• In the Watch app on the iPhone, choose App Layout. Touch and holdan icon to select it, and then drag itto a new position ④.

Install AppsTo choose which apps are installed onthe watch, do the following: 1. Open the Watch app on the

iPhone and scroll down pastApple’s built-in apps, like Stocksand Weather. Any iPhone appwith a watch component appearshere ⑤.

2. Tap the name of the app you wantto install.

3. Tap the Show App on AppleWatch switch ⑥. The app appearson the watch’s Home screen with-in seconds.

An app’s detail screen, accessed bytapping the app’s name on the main MyWatch screen in the Watch app, mayalso include a Show in Glances option, which is another method of adding aglance (see Glances, earlier).

④ The Layout screen in the iPhone’s Watchapp is an easier way to organize apps (movingthe Starbucks app, in this case).

⑤ Each watch-compatible app appears in themain screen in the Watch app on the iPhone.

⑥ Install an app and choose whether it alsoappears as a glance (if the option is available).

Remove Apps and GlancesWhen you no longer want to include anapp on the watch, it’s easy to remove it: • On the watch, go to the Home

screen, touch and hold to make theicons shake, and then tap the app you want to remove ⑦. The watch asks you to confirm the action bytapping the Delete App button.

• In the Watch app on the iPhone, tapan app’s name and turn off the ShowApp on Apple Watch switch. If youhad added the app’s glance, it is alsoremoved.

Note: You can reposition Apple’s built-in apps (like Stocks), but you can’tremove them.

Find New AppsBy tying watch apps to iPhone apps,Apple has stuck with a proven formula:the App Store. In the Watch app on theiPhone, tap the Featured button at thebottom of the screen to view apps withwatch components ⑧. When you purchase an app, it down-loads to the iPhone, and then it ap-pears in the Watch app to be installedon the watch itself. Any iPhone app can include a watchapp, so check after you install it on yourphone. For instance, when my editorset up her Wi-Fi Withings bathroomscale, it downloaded its iPhone HealthMate app automatically while makingan iPhone-Bluetooth connection to the scale. After setup, she added theHealth Mate watch app through theWatch app on her iPhone.

⑦ Remove a third-party app from the Homescreen by tapping the X that appears after youtouch and hold the icons.

⑧ Why yes, Apple will help you find new appsthat work on the Apple Watch!
