This year, we have struck a deal with Tromsø’s great, new hotel, The Edge, to do similar things there. This is done, to give the inhabitants of Tromsø a little taste of all the beautiful music that is going on at Top of the World.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to our contributors, particularly Trond Mohn, Troms Fylkeskommune, Tromsø kommune, Kulturnæringsstiftelsen, Utenriksdepartementet, University of Tromsø and SpareBank 1 Nord-Norge, who support the project with consider-able funding.

I would also like to thank the volunteers, without whom the project would never have been realized.

It is with great pleasure and pride that I wish you all welcome!

THE 4TH TOP OF THE WORLD INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITIONTo work with the first Top of the World International Piano Competition in 2009, was a realization of the ten year old dream of a major, international music event of this kind in Tromsø..

In 2011 and 2013 the competition cemented its position among the World’s best, and this year we have hopes of reaching even more milestones. The contestants are some of the best performers of their generation, and all of them have prestigious prizes and awards to prove it. It is no doubt that we have a week of glorious music experiences to look forward to.

Top of the World International Piano Competition has already achieved great recognition abroad, and in 2011, we were invited to join Steinway Prize Winner Concerts Network. This year, we also became a member of the highly prestigious World Federation of International Music Competitions.

Top of the World wished to fulfill its responsibility towards the younger talents. In 2012, the first Top of the World Masterclass Youth was organized, for pianists between 12 and 17 years of age in the Barents region. This event was repeated in 2014, where we invited one of the prize winners 2013 to give masterclass and play concerts for the participants.

At Top of the World 2013, we arranged several, free mini-concerts with the contestants around town.

GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR It is my utmost pleasure to greet the organizers and the audience of the 4th Top of the World International Piano Competition in Tromsø, June 13-19 2015.

Not many centuries ago, Northern Norway was considered to be Ultima

Thule – beyond the borders of the world. Today, the whole world looks in

our direction – towards the top of the world. The natural resources play

an important role, but there are other important players too.

Top of the World International Piano Competition was born in 2009. Tori

Stødle was – and still is – the proud and able mother. And the child

certainly lives up to its name - Top of the World!

Geographically, of course, but also measured in quality. I am immensely

proud that Top of the World brings the most talented young pianists on

the planet to Paris du Nord.

Very recently, Top of the World International Piano Competition was

accepted as members of the World Federation of International Music

Competitions. My congratulations! This is a recognition that Top of the

World is in the Premier League of music competitions, regardless of

instrument.

We are in for a treat! I am looking forward to the opening of Top of the

World International Piano Competition 2015 June 13!

KETIL VEA’S DEDICATES HIS WORK, “OCEAN”, TO TOP OF THE WORLD’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Northern Norway’s most celebrated composer, Ketil Vea, will again grace the Grand Finale with an orchestral piece, which originally had its premier at Top og the World 2013.

“Ocean” is dedicated to the Artistic Director and

founder of Top of the World, Tori Stødle, with whom

Ketil Vea has collaborated a lot with over

the years. The composition deals with the harsh

realities of the lifegiving, but at the same time

terrifying and grim, seas in the Northern region.

It is partly based on a theme from Vea’s 1st Piano

Concerto, which Tori premiered more than 40 years

ago, and later recorded in 2009.

Ketil Vea’s career spans more than 5 decades,

over which he has composed hundreds of works

for everything from philharmonic orchestras, choirs,

string orchestras, brass orchestras, chamber orches-

tras and concertos for piano, flute, tuba, clarinet,

saxophone and trumpet. Vea has 19 releases to his

name, and has been awarded the Lindeman Prize,

Nordland County’s Cultural Prize and the Petter

Dass Prize, among others. In 2007, he was also

awarded His Majesty the King’s medal in gold for his

phenomenal contribution to classical music.
