The Africa Café featuring THE FRESH CONNECTION - Business Simulation: Supply Chain Management - creating alignment in the value chain

Research has shown that misalignment is one of the biggest issues companies are facing today. The result is a poor execution of the strategy of the company and an underperforming supply chain. Creating supply chain awareness and taking down the silos is a considerable challenge. To achieve this cultural objective, a blended learning approach is required to ensure a top down focus on supply chain management. SunSky 1 - New horses for new courses: Exploring the broad forces driving the South African environment Professor Nick Binedell, Founding Director and Sasol Chair of Strategic Management of the Gordon Institute of Business Science, South Africa South Africa may be entering a long period of substantial growth in which cost, efficiency and continued innovation are key to corporate success. In low growth environments, competitive strategy becomes

even more important and supply chain and its strategy will become even more critical to success. As it becomes increasingly central to value creation for all organisations, so the business environment in which it operates has increased in complexity, become more competitive and is undergoing strategic change. The talk will explore the broad forces driving the South African environment, the challenges we face and the resilience that is built into our economic system. KEYNOTE

SunSky 1 - Packaging in Africa: Opportunities and Challenges and lessons learned André de Ruyter BA, BLC, LLB, MBA, Chief Executive Officer at Nampak, South Africa

Nampak has been listed on the JSE Limited for 47 years and operates from 28 sites in South Africa contributing approximately 40% to trading profit. 11 countries in the rest of Africa contribute 49% to trading profit and 8 sites in the UK contribute 6% to trading profit. A combination of an established regionalised production footprint, strong customer and stakeholder relationships as well as early mover advantage gives Nampak a competitive advantage. Through experience gained of 15+ years operating in the region, Nampak is familiar with challenges of doing business in areas with underdeveloped infrastructure and

volatile political and economic conditions. Although the GDP growth rate estimates in Nampak’s key markets have been revised downwards for 2016 a recovery is expected from 2017 as commodity prices improve. Current challenges do not change the overall long term investment rationale in key markets – Nigeria, Angola, Zambia and Ethiopa have compelling demographics that underpin substantial growth in the packaging sector. Learn how Nampak is uniquely positioned to benefit from this trend. KEYNOTE

SunSky 3 - The Race for Supply Chain 2030

Lora Cecere, Founder, Supply Chain Insights, USA Today, nine out of ten supply chains are stuck in delivering corporate performance objectives of improvements in inventory

turns or operating margin, but could this change in the future based on the evolution of technologies and new processes? Join this session to gain insights on how five trends will reshape supply chain thinking: - Predictive to Cognitive Modeling, -

Networks of Networks with Interoperability, - Autonomous Supply Chains, Outside-in Processes and Shifts in Analytics.

SunSky 4 - Social Supply Chains: tune in or fade out

Juanita Vorster, Owner and Strategist, At That Point PR agency, South Africa A social supply chain understands that valuable data comes

from everywhere and that immediate action on the data is fast becoming the separator between success and survival. Supply chain professionals need to understand that the data freely available through social sharing channels must become an

integral part of both strategic planning and operational execution. This session will not focus on the marketing aspects of tools such as Facebook and Twitter, but rather on the value

available from integrating social data into supply chains.

SunSky 5 - The critical coordination of transport in less

mature logistics environments - Lessons learnt from Rwanda and East Africa on the implementation of a South African transport model.

Carsten Schubert, Director, Transnova, South Africa In the last five years many South African manufacturers have accelerated their expansion plans into Africa but unfortunately often painfully and expensively. All too often the blame has

been placed on the immaturity of local supply chains and poor levels of logistics maturity. But is this really fair? Even worse does this point to an ‘air of arrogance’ that South African

companies believe they know better, an attitude that promotes the very resistance that they are seeking to avoid? In both a pragmatic and amusing presentation, filled with real-world

anecdotes and personal experiences, the presenter will explore the challenges that face the South African logistician attempting to successfully penetrate the East African market.

SunSky 1 - Supply Chain Performance Measurement: Trends and Transformation

Steven A. Melnyk, Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management, Michigan State University, USA

Performance measurement plays a critical role in every organization. It is also undergoing a dramatic transformation. This presentation

explores the changes taking place and the implication of these changes for the supply chain manager. It identifies and investigates

the critical changes – from control to communication; from being backwards oriented to feedforwarding.

SunSky 3 - Concert Interrupted? – An agenda for the Chief Supply Chain Officer

to develop countermeasures for Supply Chain risks and disruptions Danie Schoeman, Managing Director, Danie

Schoeman & Company, South Africa Getting your beautiful supply chain concert of coordination interrupted is going to happen

sometime. Supply chain disruptions are inevitable - from superstorms, human illness epidemics to factory fires, child labour and

cyber attacks. Managing risks that cause unpredictable supply chain disruptions have moved past the purview of operational risk managers to the C-suite and corporate boards,

where they are increasingly being held accountable for organizational risk. The goal of this paper is to assist the chief supply chain

officer to set an agenda for identifying supply

SunSky 4 - Getting the best out of your Supply Chain Talent

Lungelo Khumalo CSCP, Supply Chain Planning, SABMiller, South Africa Supply chains are increasingly complex and

thus require talented and skilled individuals who can effectively respond to these challenges. Couple this with the fact that

millennials have swelled the world of work, bringing their own attitudes and beliefs about the workplace. Organisations have up to four

generational cohorts at any time, bringing with it potential conflicts. This only compounds the challenge of attracting and retaining skilled people. Given that millennials will account for

50 % of your organisation’s workforce, understanding this generation will be pivotal in unlocking your organisation’s competitive

advantage and achieving harmony in the

SunSky 5 - Lessons learned from designing Omni-channel Distribution Centres

Marc Austin, Managing Director, Fortna EMEA, South Africa Omni-channel DCs promise better utilization of

labour and inventory and they often make it easier to justify automation. But operating an omni-channel distribution centre comes with a

unique set of challenges and complexities. Are you ready to make the move to one set of inventory across all your channels? Do you

know what you need to do to prepare your organization for omni-channel transformation? Do your people have the skills they need to operate a truly omni-channel DC? In this

session, we will share lessons learned from working with some of the world’s top retailers in designing and operating their omni-channel

DCs.

chain vulnerabilities and risks, and how to develop a plan and countermeasures for these.

workplace. Competitive advantage no longer lies in having the better widget. It now lies in

having the best people who can co-ordinate resources, solve problems and respond to today’s challenges in innovative ways. This

session aims to provide a deeper understanding of what makes millennials tick, share research and practical approaches from

senior business leaders in South Africa and abroad to getting the best out of your top talent.

SunSky 1 - Introduction to the Internet of Things (IoT)

Peter Vanderminden MBA, BS, Senior Consultant, IoT Practice, USA

Internet of things (IoT) refers to how firms are adding internet connectivity to their products to

gather product usage and performance data. This enables the firm to manage and service their

products remotely while providing the means to implement new business models and have a closer

relationship with customers. This session will provide a basic introduction to the range of IoT

product innovation capabilities that can be added to products, including mobile phone applications and the

implications for supply chain management practices that are needed to support such business

operations.

SunSky 3 - Cash is King: The South African Reserve Bank’s

Search for the Holy Grail of Supply Chain Management – Coordination

Mellanie de Jager, Project Management Professional, South African Reserve Bank, South

Africa In 2012, the South African Reserve Bank embarked on a strategic

journey to fundamentally transform the cash industry. This presentation will lift the veil and provide insight

into the way in which supply chain principles and technology are supporting the South African

Reserve Bank in achieving one of its key mandates, namely to ensure adequate supply of good quality

notes and coins to the South African public. Something close to not only our hearts, but to our pockets as

well.

SunSky 4 - Distribution Centres of the future: A case study

Ralton Moses MBA, Divisional Director, DSV Healthcare, South Africa

In 2011, UTi Pharma commissioned a new distribution centre in Meadowview, JHB. With

sustainability as a key consideration, the warehouse was also designed to optimize off-peak

energy usage using a modern thermal storage system and district cooling plant. The high degree of

automation in the facility supports full pallet, case and single piece picking operations and is able to

process approximately 30,000 orders lines per day. The Goods to Person workstations offer virtually

error free picking and movement from the receiving to the shipping area.

SunSky 5 - New global findings on capturing value from flow

optimisation & smart logistics Nick Gazzard, CEO, Incept, UK Competition in retail markets is

increasingly based on different logistics channel strategies. New detailed channel cost analysis

indicates on-line and retail discount channel costs are dramatically different to traditional formats, and

rising rapidly due to accelerating delivery frequency, fragmentation of networks, proliferation of delivery

points and service proposition. Recent projects and research with organisations like Nestle, Coca-

Cola, CHEP, Modulushca, Jan De Rijk and SPAR on the retail channels, the physical Internet and

modular unit loads showed opportunities to reduce “end to end” costs of over 25% that are now

being proved in live trials. This presentation will outline the relevant changes in global retail markets,

and expose European case studies on the cost differentials by actor for different retail channels, supplier

collaboration in shared DC hubs, and SPAR – CHEP in South Africa on flow optimisation and modular

unit loads. Nick Gazzard’s participation has been made possible by CHEP.

SunSky 1 - Smarter Supply

Chains: Leveraging the Internet of Things and Big Data to Impact Growth and Performance

Maha Muzumdar, Vice President, Supply Chain, Product Business Group, Oracle, USA

ABI Research estimates that more than 30 billion devices will be wirelessly connected to the Internet

of Things (IoT) by 2020. Additionally, enterprise data volume is concurrently estimated to grow

50X year-over-year between now and 2020. IoT and Big Data presents both challenges and

opportunities for companies and supply chains. The combination of IoT & Big Data is expected to

revolutionize how products are developed, manufactured and delivered to customers in the near

future through machine-to-machine connectivity, smart devices and instant communications. Today sensors can detect a wide variety of

real time signals in situations so manufacturers can be proactive and make adjustments before these

situations become problems. When

SunSky 3 - Orchestrating the

balance between a growth strategy and costs efficiencies in an emerging market – A Case

Study from Nigeria Elmien Sambandan PMP®, Manager Africa Team for Supply

Chain Transformation and Operations Advisory, EY, South Africa

It takes a musical genius to orchestrate a rock band and classical orchestra at the same

time. The contrast is similar when balancing cost efficiencies and investing in growth in an

organisation. Nigeria is one of the most attractive consumer markets in Africa, with promising double digit

growth whilst ensuring supply chain efficiencies. This presentation provides practical examples to

address these key challenges, such as price sensitive consumers and distributors, fragmental logistics network, limited network visibility

and complex product portfolios.

SunSky 1 Supply Chains in Perilous Places

Bryan Baylis CSCP, Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Consultant, Merck, USA In 2008 a Nepali region of over 250,000 people

that made $141 per year, lived 36 hours by bus one-way from the capital and healthcare center of the country, were recovering from a 10 year

civil war, and didn’t have access to a single healthcare provider. A unique partnership between a non-profit and the local Nepali

Government was born and exists today as the Bayalpata Hospital in Achham, Nepal. Fast forward to 2015, Bayalpata Hospital has

provided healthcare to over 220,000 patents free of charge. As part of a philanthropic initiative through Merck & Co. Inc. three Supply

Chain Professionals made the trek to Achham, Nepal to redesign both the internal and external medical and surgical tools supply

chains. The goal, to implement a reliable process to efficiently procure stock and deliver life-saving medicines to the patient. Join Bryan

to learn how this successful implementation included creatively implementing basic supply chain principles while constantly taking into

account the cultural differences that exist in such an environment.

SunSky 3 The physical challenge of e-commerce

distribution Rainer Buchmann, President at SSI Schäfer Peem GmbH, Germany

In recent years purchasing behaviors have been changing significantly. The impacts of demands like next-day, even same-day

shipping, perfect accuracy and returns handling are presenting new challenges to the distribution of goods that require modern

technology to stay competitive. Not only the demand for greater efficiency, economy and productivity leads to automation and

innovation, but rather the need for speed and quality. This presentation will point out how to leverage automation in E-Commerce

distribution and will give you an overview about existing and future opportunities of application through representative best-practice reference

installations from all over the world.

SunSky 4 How Transnet changed its game through

value chain coordination Raisibe Lepule, Group Executive, Transnet SOC Ltd, South Africa

Ask any of our customers about how we can keep them happiest and they will start the list with “if Transnet can deliver on promises” and

then “if Transnet can show us where our goods are and how long they will take”s. During the next 45 minutes, Raisibe will ignite the room by

taking the audience through the journey that Transnet embarked on in changing the game. The value chain coordination initiative was a

key strategic move to realising that the customer plays a key role in defining the framework for how we as Transnet do business

in South Africa.

SunSky 5 Supplychainforesight 2016 – Navigating

SunSky 1 - Managing in an Uncertain World Robert A. Stahl, Educator, Author and S&OP Coach, R.A. Stahl Company, USA

Business leaders today have an ever-increasing amount of data at their fingertips. But when it comes to anticipating the future, this data and the models they feed only provide an illusion of precision and control. Demand fluctuations are inherently unpredictable. As such, the key to success is not to try to predict the variability, but rather to employ a strong process that manages through the variability. The

most effective way to manage this uncertainty is with an authentic Executive S&OP (eS&OP) process. It must, however, be embraced across the entire organization for maximum impact. Moreover, some of

the best practices in eS&OP are counterintuitive such as operating with less detail. The benefits of a successful implementation are transformational: increased operating profit, reduced working capital, and increased service levels doing things not before possible through aligned human energy. Bob Stahl’s participation has been made possible by Syspro.

SunSky 1 - S&OP Maturity Comes

Prior to Advance Planning Software Steven Hainey CPSM, CPIM,

CPF, MCIPS, C.P.M., Director of Supply Chain, Jarden Applied Materials, USA

With the majority of companies stuck in the first stages of S&OP maturity and struggling to move

forward, the session will cover why implementing advance planning software for their ERP systems is

not always the best next step. This session will shed light on the different stages of the S&OP

maturity journey, the key requirements for those stages, and methods to overcome the major

hurdles for each one. When companies are in the first stages of S&OP maturity, the existing culture

and processes frequently limit advancements more than a company’s technology and

software. The presenter will address the appropriate stage to install the advance planning

software which is typically required to move into the higher maturity levels.

SunSky 3 - How to become truly

Demand Driven based on accurate Customer Orders rather than inaccurate Forecasts

Ken Titmuss, B.Sc. (Prod. Eng), CFPIM, CSCP, SCOR-P, CPF, PLS, CS&OP, CDDP, CSCA, Kent

Outsourcing, South Africa In the past the Demand Driven Institute (DDI) has developed

Demand Driven Material Requirements Planning (DDMRP) and a Demand Driven Operating

Model (DDOM) that suits these Complex Adaptive Systems and has proved that it works for all

material in the Supply Chain from primary raw materials to retail, through manufacturing and

distribution. More recently, to complement DDMRP and the DDOM, the development of

Demand Driven Sales and Operations Planning (DDS&OP) and the Demand Driven Adaptive

System (DDAS) now gives us a complete demand driven planning and control system from Strategy,

through Tactics to Operations. This new material will now be taught in the recently released DDI

certification – Certified Demand Driven Leader (CDDL). Let us show you how you can quickly move from

the traditional “Push and Promote” methods to the Demand Driven “Position, Protect and Pull” method

and take the lead in your industry.

SunSky 5 - Benchmarking Supply

Chains in South Africa Liezl Smith M. Eng., Pr. Eng., CSCP, CPIM, CPF, ACPF, EMLog,

SCOR-P, CDDP, Specialist Trainer and Consultant, Businessix Business Brokers

CC, South Africa Companies often wonder how they are performing in relation to others

in the same environment. South Africa has some unique challenges and conditions that make it difficult

to compare to benchmarking data from the US or Europe. During 2015, as part of completing her M.

Eng in Engineering Management at the University of Pretoria, the author embarked on a process to

find a list of measures and their method of calculation to create a South African benchmarking

program, specifically focused on supply chain performance. Initially a panel of senior supply chain

gurus were engaged in a focus group to agree on the measures to be used as well as their calculation.

Thereafter the measures were tested in the market with the help of a survey. This research will

continue in 2016 and it is envisaged to have an annual benchmarking survey for South African

companies. The aim is to evolve this program so that it becomes a useful tool for businesses to gauge

their performance in relation to others.

Economics – Supply Chain Solutions When Zero Counts Marilize Worst BCompt Honours,

Managing Director, SmartMatta, South Africa There is a growing understanding of the value of waste by

companies. The move from considering waste management merely as a cost saving exercise to

seeing it as a value-add to the bottom line is slowly infiltrating forward thinking businesses’

strategies. Making the real and utmost difference requires rethinking waste as an integral

component of your supply chain. Rethinking your supply chain as a continuous positive

development cycle that preserves and enhances natural capital, optimises resource yields and

minimises system risks – often referred to nowadays as a circular economy and closed loop approach

which optimises value throughout the life cycle of products.

SunSky 4 - Why Organisations

invariably underestimate the true costs of MRO Brian Andrew B.Com, B.Acc,

Country Manager, RS Components, South Africa The complexity of MRO (maintenance, repair, operations)

procurement means that organisations spend a disproportionate amount of time

sourcing and purchasing items that are of relatively small value, both individually and in total. These

process costs are largely invisible and tend to be underestimated or ignored. To put it in perspective the

study provides quantitative evidence that total procurement costs (product and process costs)

can end up being double the average product cost.

SunSky 5 - Container port forecasts: Decision making

factors for volumes and types Various port container forecasting models are used worldwide. Most

of the current models are based on macro-economic parameters, and

NB – programme may be subject to change without notice.

Our modern economy currently operates through a linear approach

where products are made, used and disposed of. This Linear Economy is powered by

increasingly expensive fossil fuels, relies on continual economic growth and generates waste. An

alternative approach is a Circular Economy. This is an industrial system which benefits business,

society and nature; it aims to reuse products and materials to realise their maximum value. The Circular

Economy is estimated to be worth $4.5 trillion per annum and capable of removing all new CO2 emissions

generated by global GDP growth over the next 15 years (COP21).

There are many certification schemes available on the global

stage. Each of these have been designed to better the organisation, however many companies merely

implement these in order to have a certificate. The risk of non-compliance is potentially

catastrophic to the manufacturer. The presentation will look at a case by case basis where the effective

lack of management and adherence to the management systems resulted in outbreaks

which destroyed national and global supply chains, effected economies and sunk organisations.

Supply chains are increasingly global and things can shift quickly,

today there are more risk incidents with greater impact. Procurement organisations cannot afford to

neglect supplier risk, need to take into account reputational risk, and are having to cope with an ever

increasing level of regulatory compliance that means our procurement staff are trawling

through huge amounts of structured and unstructured data in order to try to drive optimum value and risk

for their customers. Cognitive Computing is helping us to ensure we can bring all of the intelligence

to bear immediately in the form of insights for our practitioners to drive value with confidence. The focus is

collaborative Digital Reinvention with our clients by driving outcomes across the enterprise supported

digitally by design. Cognitive computing allows us to utilise Big Data for Supplier Risk leveraging

tend to overstate capacity requirements. Obtaining the

infrastructure investment too early can be costly to the SA economy, but the alternative of investing too

late has been felt with the pain of Eskom’s load shedding. The timing for port infrastructure planning is

thus crucial. One way to improve forecast accuracy is to understand the container content, and then

forecast the content and “re-pack” the content into containers. This session is about understanding

parameters for predicting container content.

SunSky 1 - Public vs Private – Best Practice is what matters – be part of the discussion

The understanding of the term Supply Chain Management between the public and private sectors is more

often than not, a great debate. Aren't Supply Chain Management principles the same across both sectors? In

some ways public sector supply chains are not very different from their private sector counterparts. Public sector customers demand that materials and services be delivered with the speed and cost structure of the private

sector, and public sector supply professionals are struggling with how to accomplish that. It can be done—by using private sector principles such as strategic sourcing, supplier management, and inventory control in a way that is acceptable in public sector settings. Join our team of supply chain professionals from public and private

sector and participate in what is going to be a lively discussion! This session will be facilitated by Cobus Rossouw CSCP, SAPICS Director and Chief Business Development Officer at Imperial Logistics

Workshop 6 Maximizing supply chain learning through simple patterning and sequencing Joyce Lewis MAEd, CPIM, CSCP, C.P.M., President, APICS Los Angeles Chapter, USA Have you ever found yourself humming a tune, counting time to stay on track or counting off steps to a task using your fingers? Have you ever reorganized a warehouse for a more efficient picking process, classified inventory into groups, or proceduralized the material requirements planning process? It is human nature to make sense of every-day experiences through patterns and sequencing. The complexity of understanding supply chain concepts is simplified by placing ideas and coordinating details into logical and sequential patterns. What are key, simple techniques to remember and comprehend the concepts of time fences, days of

supply, types of waste, or balance sheet equations? Designed for APICS instructors and using APICS certification review course concepts, this workshop will explore how patterning and sequencing in supply chain concepts can efficiently develop conceptual understanding and procedural fluency for Supply Chain Professionals.

Tech Talk 8 Business Modelling Associates Speaker: Erika Marais LLamasoft Supply Chain Guru vs. Spreadsheets - Top 8 Reasons Why Modelling Technology Trumps Spreadsheet-Based Solutions

Most supply chain analysts know Microsoft Excel like the back of their hand - the relationship started back in student days, and after so many years of daily use, they know its capabilities and feel confident building more and varied spreadsheet-based formulas and calculations. But what happens when the dataset is too large to solve using Excel, no one else is quite sure how the formulas were even created, or the supply chain questions become too complex and numerous for the spreadsheet to answer? Spreadsheets are great for many things. However, large-scale supply chain

optimisation is best done using sophisticated supply chain modelling technology. This session will explore some of the top reasons why supply chain analysts prefer supply chain modelling software to spreadsheet-based solutions.

11:05 – 11:35 Tech Talk 9 Knapp Speaker: Roman Schnabl Industry 4.0/Logistics 4.0 the Next Big Thing?

Logistics Services are described as the backbone for the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0). The question however is, does Industry 4.0 signify a revolution for the Intralogistics also? Speed, precision, flexibility and availability are deciding competitive criteria in the execution of Logistics. Transparency is demanded each step of the process: customers want to have access at any time and from anywhere to information pertaining to product on hand and availability of product. The Future Route to Transport Procurement Cost Savings – Automated Tendering

South Africa’s economy is transport intensive with transport being the single biggest contributor to logistics costs in the country. Significantly, transport is also one of the biggest expenses on a

company’s income statement. Since the majority of transport expenditure is typically incurred through long term contracts, strategically sourcing transportation services is fundamental to

successfully driving down costs. And there is no better way to achieve this than leveraging the technology available for Automated Tendering. Traditionally, a transport procurement event has been

a tedious, time-consuming manual process and is still a significant challenge for many companies in South Africa. But now it is possible for companies to easily configure a web-based tool to

automate and streamline the transport procurement process. This session will demonstrate the features and benefits of Automated Tendering.

Speaker: Colin Seftel CFPIM. CSCP, CDDP, CSCA and Ken Titmuss CFPIM, CSCP, CDDL, CDDP, CSCA REPLENISHMENT+®, the DDMRP enabler REPLENISHMENT+® is a materials and inventory management software which uses the methodology of Demand Driven MRP (DDMRP). It is the most popular DDMRP software in the world.

At this presentation, Ken Titmuss will present the results of the simulation conducted at the REPLENISHMENT+® booth, where random demand patterns were submitted by visitors. We will see whether the DDMRP buffer is robust enough to be able to supply to that demand. Colin Seftel will present some case studies from organisations where REPLENISHMENT+® has been implemented. Finally, one lucky delegate will be presented with a flat-screen HD TV. To qualify, submit a random demand pattern at the REPLENISHMENT+® booth and attend this session.
