We are looking forward to our Awards Day at Costa Hall where we will celebrate and acknowledge our students and staff for their work throughout the year. We appreciate the community involvement with many sponsors and community members participating in the award ceremony. I was overwhelmed by the great support given by our Parents Association who organised the second hand book and uniform sales for our Belmont High School community. There were many parents who worked to prepare and conduct a very successful sale that raises funds which are used for the school. We recently had our final School Council dinner, where we acknowledge the contribution of the members of this important group that govern our school. Thank you to the large number of staff, parents and community members who have made a significant contribution to the successful running of our School Council. There are a number of long standing members that will be leaving the School Council at the end of this year. If you are interested in knowing more about School Council, please do not hesitate to contact me. We have a number of staff who will be leaving the Belmont High School community at the end of the year. Ms Anne Harbison has been a great Green House Leader for 11 years and will be retiring. Ms Jane Kahle who has been instrumental in the suc-cessful running of our Middle Years Program, and she will be on family leave. Peter Macer has mentored a number of teachers and is an excellent teacher who inspired many students in English and EAL, and will be retiring. Ms Ann McGrath has been our Bursar for 11 years and will be retiring. Jim Davidson and Greg Dangerfield have been on extended leave and will be retiring. Rosie Anderson has worked in the Library since 2006 and her experience and knowledge will be greatly missed. We wish them all the very best for the future and thank them for all their work over the years. I would like to congratulate each student and staff member for their work this year and wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas break. Sandra Eglezos Principal SENIOR BOYS BASKETBALL Congratulations to our school representatives at the Australian School Championship National basketball competition. THANK YOU AND GOODBYE I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all the staff, parents and students I have worked with over the past 11 years. My time at Belmont High School has been extremely rewarding and I have been blessed with many opportunities to grow as a teacher and work with amazing students. I will miss the relationships I have with many students, both past and present. I am sad to say goodbye however, look forward to the new chapter of my life ahead. I look forward to seeing some of you again over the coming years. Farewell for now. Have a safe and healthy summer. Jane Kahle

GREEN HOUSE It is with a sad heart that I pen my final Belmont High School newsletter. However, I am excited to begin the next phase of my life. I know Green House will be in good hands being led by Ms Emma Horne as House Leader and Ms Emily Gaito the Assistant House Leader. The student leadership team in 2017 will be led by: House Captains Imogen Hair and Dylan Cowan, Vice Captains Hiba Al-Assafi and Robin Sangwan, Sports Captain Eric Parkin, Music Captain Jasmin Wilson and SRC Rep Brodey Hamilton. A very dynamic team! So after 11 years as Green House Leader at BHS, I pass the baton on! Thank you to all the families for their support over the years. Good luck to all the Green House students past and present. Have a safe and happy Christmas. All the very best to you all.

STUDENT FIBRE WORK Attention All Students. Last chance to collect any work from the Fibre room. All work will be taken to the Op Shop on Wednesday 14th.

RED HOUSE REPORT “Esprit De Corps” Another year in Red comes to an end and what a year it has been. At the start of Term One the Year 7’s were welcomed into the fold. The swimming carnival was a sight to behold. Red Flags waving aloft in the sunshine, the cacophony of whistles and cheers only silenced by the united, rousing renditions of the Red House anthem. House Spirit lives on! A huge thank you to everyone who participated in 2016, let’s go bigger and better in 2017!

2016 will go down as one of the most successful years with wins at Athletics Sports, the Music Competition, Year 7 Volleyball, Year 7 Readers Cup and Year 8 Readers Cup and of course the prestigious ‘House Spirit Award’. In the Athletics, participation was excellent with only a few missed events, which goes to show that House participation goes further toward team success than individual excellence. Congratulations to Lachlan Hurley (8 Red) who took out the Age Group champion in Athletics. If we can show the same participation in swimming next year there is no reason why we cannot take top spot, so get swimming over the holidays and be ready to fill up our events! In the Music Competition, the band put in two great performances and finished 1st in an extremely close contest. Musically, I thought we were top class and the icing on the cake was a fantastic saxophone solo in ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ by Charlie Hudson (10 Red). The great thing is that the band really gelled and enjoyed playing and practicing together. Looking forward to another great performance in 2017 where we will be looking for more performers from the lower year levels to contribute the band! The Band: Rhiannon Winsor, Aiden Vanbeek, Kyle Mitchell, Lazar Vlahovic, Jared Pagels, Callum Marriot, Charlie Hudson, Nathan Reeves. The Y7’s this year have really made an impact, taking out the Volleyball Competition and the Y7 Readers Cup. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and participation and look forward to the same next year. The Y8’s also were victorious in their Readers Cup competition and at the time of writing are still in the Y8 Soccer comp, Good luck! Honourable mention needs to go to the Year 9 group who were narrowly beaten in the Grand Final of the House Basketball Competition, but who again showed wonderful participation and spirit in making it to the final. Also, an honourable mention to the debating team who lost in their round to the eventual winners Mango. Hopefully we can go one better next year. To the graduating Year 12 class of 2016, I consider myself so fortunate to have been the Red House Leader from 2011 when you started in Year 7 and to see your journey through high school. You have been a fantastic group in terms of your participation in House events and inspiring others to show House Spirit. You have been great role models this year and all through your time at Belmont High School and I wish you all the very best for your future adventures. Finally, I wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer holiday and look forward to seeing you all bright and refreshed in 2017 ready for another year of ‘Esprit de Corps’!

VCE NEWS Well another year is drawing to a close and in saying that it has been another great year in the Senior School. We started the year with over 170 Year 12 students at VCE and VCAL and over 200 at Year 11. In Year 12, we have had eight exits of students going to other career options, but once we take those exits out of the picture we had all 154 VCE students complete and earn their VCE. A 100% pass rate. VCAL had similar success. We celebrated this group of students’ schooling at the Graduation at The Arena on the 22nd November with just under 800 guests in attendance and 146 Graduates. It was a fantastic night! We now await the scores and the pathways for these outstanding young citizens. I wish them all the best. REMEMBER: Students are welcome to contact or visit Mr. McAndrew once scores are released to discuss the scores and all other options. Our successes will be celebrated the Awards day on the 12th December. ALSO NOTE: VCE/VCAL Certificates will be available from the school from the 14th December but MUST be collected from the school. They will not be sent out! Statement of Results are sent to home addresses. For the Year 10 and 11 cohort (11 and 12, 2017), it was great to see them take their exams so seriously and work so diligently during the ECP. This makes for a great start to 2017. If you missed the ECP due to illness or absence or World Challenge, you need to collect the work missed. You may contact the teacher direct by email or contact Mr. McAndrew for a work package. REMEMBER: to complete holiday homework. NO PASSENGERS in 2017. Reminders for the Year 12 group of 2017. You will be the biggest Year 12 group we will ever have, over 200. Jumpers will be delivered to camps in 2017 and on CAMP, reminder to get notes back. There will be changes in 2017 to operational procedures and these will be outlined to students in the first few days of school but they have been made to optimise your potential as were the programs run for VCE students in 2016. In closing, I wish the graduates all the best in the new directions away from Belmont, starting with the big day on the 12 th December. Personally I thank you for making 2016 such a great year and I look forward to a great year with the VCE students of 2017. To the whole school community including our wonderful VCE teaching staff, thank you all for your support and efforts and I wish you a happy festive season and a safe and relaxing summer break. THE LANGUAGES CORNER

Selamat Berlibur - Buone Vacanze – Enjoy your Break! 2017 Indonesia Trip Students are getting excited about the up-coming Study Tour to Java, Bali and Lombok in March next year. Passports are in place, immunisations underway and documentation being finalised. Below are a few photos to whet the appetite!!

Host Families for Indonesian Students Families of students studying Indonesian: this is a great opportunity for Indonesian language students to benefit from making an Indonesian friend and improving language skills! Please consider registering to host an Indonesian student in 2017 for two weeks. Registering does not oblige families to go ahead with hosting. Italian Exchange – Host Families Wanted We are looking for seven families to look after an Italian student for about 10 days in July 2017 (dates TBC). Families whose children are currently studying Italian would benefit greatly by hosting one of these students, and a lifelong friendship can be forged with them. It is also very likely that the Italian student may reciprocate the hosting of the BHS student if they should visit Italy in the future.

Keeping up language learning during the holidays Just like with playing an instrument or a sport, learning a language is most effective when practised regularly. Students are encouraged to keep up Indonesian / Italian by completing tasks on Language Perfect or Languages Online, watch films and listen to music in those languages. Visiting Italian or Indonesian restaurants with the family and talking to the staff can also be an authentic way to use the language and get a feel for the culture. With summer approaching, festivals can be a good day out for kids and parents alike. Melbourne has a number of multicultural festivals happening every month: http://www.thatsmelbourne.com.au/Whatson/Festivals/Multicultural/Pages/Multicultural.aspx. Of course, Geelong also has a wealth of interesting multicultural initiatives, Pako Festa being the main one taking place on February 25th next year: https://www.pakofesta.com.au/ We wish students and their families a happy and relaxing break and look forward to seeing them in the New Year. Are you interested in hosting an Indonesian student in 2017?

Fantastic opportunity for Indonesian language learners! We would like to form a register of interested families who may like to host a student for approximately two weeks in 2017. This is

especially useful if your child studies Indonesian, but is not restricted to these families.

Info you may like to know before registering:

· Students are approximately 15-16 years old.

· Every effort is made to match the gender of the visitor to that of your child.

· Approximately $200 is available to families to help with costs during the two weeks.

· Visitors will have their own spending money.

· Preference for families will be given to those with children studying Indonesian at BHS.

· Visitors have some English language skills.

· Visitors will be engaged with school programs on week days, but probably not on weekends.

· Family members over the age of 18 must have a Working with Children Check.

· Being on the register is a register of interest only.

· No dates confirmed for 2017 yet, but likely to be late Term Two or Term Three.

Contact: Glenda Wood (Bu Glen), Indonesian teacher, with your name, email address and phone number to register your

interest.

MUSIC NEWS This is our last Music news for 2016, so I’d like to thank everyone in the music department for all their hard work in lessons and ensembles this year. Don’t forget to return your re-enrolment forms for lessons/ensembles for 2017. We are excited to have secured a strings teacher for 2017, so please put in an enrolment form if you would like lessons on violin, viola or cello in 2017 at BHS. You will need to have your own instrument, they are not available for hire through the school. If you need advice on instrument hire, please make contact with Ms Humphrey before the end of the year. Last Monday, Intermediate Jazz toured Montpelier, Roslyn and Bellaire Primary Schools, performing a polished and entertaining set to the students. They were joined on stage by some of the Year 6 students who have been participating in the Year 6 music program, and it was great to see our Jazz students so welcoming and supportive of the next generation of BHS music students. Thanks to Amanda Linton for all her organisation of the day, and congratulations to the Woodwind section for their contentious victory in the annual Brass/Percussion vs Woodwind Cricket match. On Tuesday, this same group performed for the 2017 Year 7 group bright and early in the gym, and later during the day as the year 7s toured through the bandroom in house groups. Many thanks to all these students, particularly those who came back to school for this performance. On Tuesday evening, the Year 6 Music program held a short concert to celebrate their achievements over the 6 week program of lessons, and it was a wonderful showcase of how much progress the students had made. Many of the students bravely volunteered to perform solos and duets in the concert, and showed impressive confidence and skill. We can’t wait to welcome these students into the 2017 program next year! This program wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the Primary schools in finding spaces for us to teach, so our thanks to them for accommodating the Year 6 program over the last 6 weeks, and of course to our instrumental music teachers for their time + effort travelling to the primary schools for lessons each week. Jazz Syndicate gave a smooth + polished performance at the Year 7 parent information evening last Tuesday, and both Syndicate and Senior Band will have their last performance for 2016 at Awards Day on Monday 12th December, as will the year 1 VET band and the Senior Saxophone Ensemble. Beginning Band are busking at Bunnings in Waurn Ponds on Friday afternoon, so listen out for Jingle Bells in the paint aisle from 1.30 – 2.30pm! If you miss them there, you can catch them at the Roslyn Primary School Carols Night on Friday evening at 6.30pm. Don’t forget to practise over the holidays, and looking forward to a big year of performance in 2017!

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM Another Great Year for the Our EAL International Student Program 2016 The combined EAL /International 7 -12 student program had another great year with many successful activities throughout 2016. Students attended a school camp in Melbourne. We visited the Immigration Museum and we attended a musical performance of Matilda, a thrilling soccer match between Melbourne Victory and Atletico Madrid, and an exciting performance of The Great Mos-cow Circus. Students finished the year with an evening at The Drumcondra Bowls Club and at Eastern Beach playing soccer. Stu-dents wrote about some of these and their other experiences in an online booklet which will be available in an online Ebook in The Belmont High School Library shortly. Below are some student responses to some of our extra curricula activities. EAL/INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CAMP

On the 16th and the 17th of June 2016 the BHS International Student Group went on a camp to Melbourne with Mr. Caccamo and Ms. Buchanan

We went there by the train, and caught three other trams to travel around the city. On the first day, after we went shopping, we went to the MCG on a two-hour tour. We learnt about when the cricket ground was first built, where the teams have meeting briefings and we even got to see their new ice baths they had just put in. We also got to go on the cricket and footy ground, but we could not play because it was raining. They had special lights that cost two million dollars to help the grass grow, because in the winter the sun only gets to one part of the oval. The tour guide told us that the lights are very expensive to use. He told us the story of where they got the idea of the lights from. It was from a flower grower in The Netherlands, who used them to grow his flowers when there wasn’t

enough sunlight. Samuel Tine 8G

MATILDA and the IMMIGRATION MUSEUM On Wednesday the 10th of August my EAL class and I went to Melbourne to watch the Matilda play. We read the book by Roald Dahl and watched the movie directed by Danny DeVito. I was curious to watch the theatrical adaption by Dennis Kelly with music by Tim Minchin, because I found the book and movie so good. When we first arrived in Melbourne we went to the Immigration Museum where we learnt about the various identities of immigrants to Australia and the need we all have to belong and feel ac-cepted. The exhibition explores how our cultural heritage, languages, beliefs and family connection have been brought to Austral-ia from many different countries. I discovered the great contribution made by immigrants to Australia, but sadly, I not all new arri-vals were treated well.

I was so excited to watch the play. It started with the kids singing ‘’When I grow up’’ then it went to the hospital where her mother gave birth to Matilda. The actress who played Matilda’s mother did an outstanding job and her dancing was awfully funny. All of the children did a remarkable job remembering the words, songs and dance routines with apparent ease. The music and the light-ing was spectacular. What I really enjoyed about Matilda the Musical was that it was familiar and yet so different to the book and

the movie version. That made me want to watch it even more. Msendoo Tine 10P

Matilda the musical was a captivating and fascinating performance, it was invigorating to see Matilda in a new way. Especially because I have never seen a live performance of a children’s book before. The characters, the singing and the dancing, every-thing was seen in a new light. From the marvellous singing, all the way to the sensational dancing and stunts, they managed to keep the audience focused and alive. Medha Podder 10 P Melbourne Victory vs Atletico Madrid On Sunday 31th of July everyone gathered in Mr Williams’ house and then walked to the Geelong Simonds stadium to watch the

game Atletico Madrid vs Melbourne Victory. When we arrived there we found our seats and waited for the game to start. Every time we saw Atletico Madrid players, getting close to scoring a goal Ahmed and I cheered and screamed; but no goals were scored until a couple of minutes before the end of the first half when Melbourne Victory scored with a header. We were shocked. We didn’t expect that. And we didn’t

expect Atletico Madrid to lose 1:0. When the game had finished and we were coming out we saw a crowded spot where people were waiting for something or some-one to come out of a doorway leading into the stadium. I suspected that this was the exit where players left for their bus. So Ah-med, Jialu and I waited there and we saw Fernando Torres and I took so many pictures with him. Sina Mohammadi 09S

THE GREAT MOSCOW CIRCUS Thanks to the generosity of The Belmont Rotary Club who assisted with tickets on 25th of August a group of sixteen EAL students

went with Mr. Williams, Mr Williams’ wife Sarah and Ms Cologni to the Great Mos-cow Circus.

There were acrobats, flying trapeze artists and motorbike riders in a globe, a clown with the Russian doll and the best thing that I liked about it was the motorbike riders in the globe and the acrobats. Sina Mohammadi 09S My favourite part of the show was when they had six motor bike riders all riding at the same time in a small steel caged dome called ‘The Globe of Death’. I felt scared when the six riders in the Globe of Death, all sped around inside the globe rapidly

Page 8: Download Our Newsletter

9/12/2016 Page #8

changing directions inside. I thought they were going to crash and someone would be badly injured, but luckily, no one crashed. They said that ‘The GMC’ was the only circus where six riders had ridden ever inside the dome in Australia. I am so glad I was there to see it happen live with my own eyes. Samuel Tine 8G DRUMCONDRA BOWLS / EASTERN BEACH

On Thursday the 1st of December Mr. Caccamo Ms. Rita, Mr. Williams and fifteen EAL students had a great excursion to at Drumcondra Lawn Bowls Club. A forty-five minutes playing bowls went to Eastern Beach first to the Geelong Boat House where we ate fish and chips and chilled in a nice weather. Afterwards, and we made up soccer teams. I scored one goal and Mr Williams scored two goals. Sina Mohammadi 9S

I loved the fish and chips restaurant on the water and going upstairs to eat- lots of friends together, having dinner in really good weather while pigeons were flying around us. That was so good!

John Gao 10E

I had never played this game before. I played with Mersad and Sina. I was running hot and surged to a 4/1/1 early lead. But then Mersad caught up and led 5 to my 4 and Sina’s 3. Even though I lost it was a great day especially when Mr. Williams scored two goals to Sina’s one in the soccer.. hahahaha. Kelvin Mu 8R

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM "Hello, my name is Giulia Carvalho, I'm a Brazilian exchange student and I've been in Australia for the whole year of 2016. Coming to Australia was a dream since I was little because my dad used to talk about it a lot...Today I can say that I successfully achieved it. Here I improved my english language skills and met some incredible people who I'll remember forever. My host family was simply amazing! They took me to places that I would never imagine to go; I got to deeply experience the culture, we went camping, surfing and we also did lots of day trips throughout the year. Belmont High School was very supportive since the beginning of the program and I am very thankful for that. I believe that my exchange helped me grow as a human being, I gained a lot of independence and learned to deal with situations that I wasn't used to before. The experience was incredible and I truly wish to come back to this beautiful country one day!"

‘Ciao Belmont High School. I am Andrea, the Italian Exchange student who has been at Belmont High School for 3 months. I’ve

had a great time getting to know new friends and experiencing a completely different culture and lifestyle. Although for the scholastic aspect, the time of the year probably was not the best period to come over, for it was during the last term, when the classes were wrapping up and finishing for the academic year. I have had lots of fun at school and I want to thank everyone that has been so kind and friendly to me right from the start, making me feel at ease and making this my second home. I would like to thank all the teachers that helped me throughout my stay, especially Mr. Caccamo who helped me with everything and was always approachable and available to give me advice. I would also like to thank my Host family – They have all been extremely kind and they have helped me to not feel homesick and to fully enjoy my exchange experience by taking me to wonderful places to visit in this beautiful country. When I return to Rome, I hope to keep in touch with everyone that I have got to know during these 3 months. I hope to come back in the future to see you all again. Arrivederci !!!’

NEW ASTHMA ACTION PLANS FOR VICTORIANS SCHOOLS As part of Belmont High School’s commitment to meeting our legislative requirements and the Schools Policy Advisory Guide, we require you to provide us with an updated Asthma Action Plan for your child diagnosed with Asthma. Please visit the Victorian Asthma Foundation website for the new Asthma Action Plan for Victorian Schools, which has been spe-cifically designed for schools to identify asthma signs and symptoms, and respond accordingly using the asthma medication de-vice that your child currently has at school. https://www.asthmaaustralia.org.au/vic/about-asthma/resources/victorian-action-plans/victorian-asthma-action-plans If your child’s medication device has changed since their Action Plan was last updated please forward this letter on to your child’s medical practitioner, so they can download and complete the appropriate Asthma Action Plan for Victorian Schools. Once com-pleted please return it to us prior to Term 1 commencement in 2017. Please ensure your child has their medication and any other device (eg. spacer) with them to better manage their asthma symptoms. If your medical practitioner has informed you that your child has grown out of their asthma, they will need to provide a letter, on the Medical Practice letterhead, to the school stating such.

If you have any questions, please contact me on 5243 5355 between 9am—3pm.
