EMPI-Indian Express Indian Innovation AwardsCommitment towards making an INNOVATIVE INDIA

The Indian Innovation Awards was launched in the year 2005 by the EMPIGroup of Institutions for fostering a ‘culture of innovation’ under the inspiringpresence and guidance of the then President of India, Hon’ble Dr. A. P. J.Abdul Kalam, with the mission to identify and bring forward innovativeorganizations whose organizational innovations have impacted major changes.

The whole movement has received a fillip since the last year, with the joiningof the two top organizations in their respective fields – The Indian ExpressGroup and The Boston Consulting Group.

The Indian Express Group based on their philosophy of serious and positivejournalism that impact both policy and people, and The Boston ConsultingGroup (India), a globally renowned organization in consulting managementhave helped to strengthen the mission of the Indian Innovation Awards, withthe Awards being re-christened as the EMPI - Indian Express Indian InnovationAwards.

I would like to thank the 400 plus organizations who registered for the 2006Awards. The rigorous Awards process had four stages which involved theregistration and submission of the participant form by the organization, preliminary evaluation and short listing of the organizations followed by aninteractive session with top sectoral Evaluators. Thereafter, the inputs providedduring the interactive session led to the final selection by the Jury of 14 Awardwinners of this year. Of the 14 winners, 9 are Gold Trophy and 5 are SilverTrophy winners and are drawn from a wide diaspora of organizations -Government, Corporates, NGOs etc.

Another milestone, which we have been able to achieve in our second year, isthe readiness for release of the Inaugural issue of ‘Innovations- The EMPIJournal of Inter-Disciplinary Perspectives’, by Hon’ble Dr. Kalam at the AwardsFunction today. The journal, the first of its kind in India with a globally renownedAdvisory and Editorial Board, includes the innovations achieved by the lastyears’ winners in the form of case studies and research papers.

In future, The EMPI Group of Institutions and The Indian Express Group areto launch a series of initiatives to popularize the concept of ‘OrganizationalInnovations’ and ‘Innovative Organizations’ towards accelerating India’sInnovation Movement.

Innovation enriches societies. Technology & Innovation is powered by resource investment

I am delighted to participate in the Indian Innovation Awards2006 organized by the Entrepreneurial Management Proc-

esses International (EMPI) in collaboration with Indian Ex-press. I greet the organizers who are celebrating Indian In-novative Organizations towards promotion of a culture of in-novation among ourentrepreneurs. I con-gratulate the awardwinners, Tata Consul-tancy Services,Karnataka State RoadTransport Corpora-tion, Midas Commu-nication, Tata Motors,Multi Commodity Ex-change of India,Keggfarms, Genpact,LV Prasad Eye Insti-tute, Water Supplyand Sanitation Depart-ment, Govt ofMaharashtra andother institutions fortheir excellent innova-tive culture. I under-stand that these inno-vative organizationshave been selected through a process of rigorous selectionfrom hundreds of participants.

Networking of Institutions Promoting InnovationI have participated apart from today's programme in two otherinnovation promotion centres. One, National Innovation Foun-dation sponsored by Department of Science and Technology;the second one, is the L-RAMP Awards instituted by IndianInstitute of Technology, Chennai in partnership with theLamelson Foundation of USA. Now I am participating in theEMPI Indian Innovation Awards. The first two are promot-ing grass roots innovation that can eventually create an im-

pact in the lives of larger section of the society, particularlyin the rural areas whereas EMPI is promoting organizationalinnovation both in the urban and rural sectors. I feel that thereis a need for interaction between these innovation promo-tion organizations for enhancing national innovative ability.

Higher the innovationresult, higher will be theknowledge building andwealth generation ca-pacity leading to eco-nomic prosperity of thenation. I would like totalk on the topic "Inno-vation enriches socie-ties".

Innovation is theCapitalWhen I was studyingthe Global Innovationreport for the year2007, I found that asper Global InnovationIndex, US is ranked1;Germany 2; UK-3;Netherlands-9; and Indiais 23. We are constantly

in the process of improving. There is a relationship betweeninnovation index and competitiveness. Even though India is23 in innovation index, our ranking in global competitivenessindex is 48. India has to move up in competitiveness within10 and in innovation index within five in five year's time.Growth competitiveness is determined by the innovativeability of an organization. This innovation arises from insti-tutional initiative and the R & D productivity of the firm, shaped by policies and nature of local institutions apart fromgrass root level individual innovation. National innovative ca-pacity has to be the country's important potential for pro-ducing competitive products. Institutions can definitely con-

tribute towards the enhancement in over all competitivenessindex of the country. This requires the combined effort ofresearchers, technologists, production specialists and busi-ness leaders. For building competitiveness what you need istalent with innovation and creativity. Let us now discusscreativity.

CreativityIn a knowledge society, we have to make innovationscontinuously. Innovations come through creativity.Creativity comes from beautiful minds. It can be anywhereand any part of the world. It may start from a fisherman’shamlet or a farmer's household or a dairy farm or cattlebreeding center or it could emanate from classrooms orlabs or industries or R&D centers. Creativity has got multidimensions like inventions, discoveries and innovations.Creative mind has the ability to imagine or invent somethingnew by combining, changing or reapplying existing ideas.Creative person has an attitude to accept change and new-ness, a willingness to play with ideas and possibilities, a flex-ibility of outlook, the habit of enjoying the good, while look-ing for ways to improve it. Creativity is a process throughwhich, we can continuously improve ideas and find uniquesolutions by making gradual alterations and refinementsto our works. The important aspect of creativity is: seeingthe same thing as everybody else, but thinking of somethingdifferent.

When I see you all, I am reminded of one thought regardinginventors and inventions, discoverers and discoveries. Let usstudy important inventors and their inventions. • The Wrightbrothers and the plane. • George Eastman and film • ThomasEdison and the light bulb • Alexander Graham bell and thetelephone.

Let us study a few discoverers and their discoveries. • AlbertEinstein and the energy equation E = MC2 • SrinivasRamanujan and Number Theory • ChandrasekharSubramaniyam and Chandrasekhar Limit • Sir C. V. Ramanand Raman Effect. Inventions and discoveries have emanatedfrom creative minds that have been constantly working andimaging the outcome in the mind. With imaging and constanteffort, all the forces of the universe work for that inspiredmind, thereby leading to inventions or discoveries. Higher thenumber of creative minds in an organization, the best resultsof innovation in all the three sectors of the economy willemerge. Now let me discuss the dimensions of knowledgesociety, since India is moving towards the knowledgeeconomy.

Dimensions of Knowledge Society

In the knowledge economy the objective of a society changesfrom fulfilling the basic needs of all-round development toempowerment. The education system will be promoted bycreative, interactive self learning - formal and informal edu-cation with focus on values, merit and quality. The workersinstead of being skilled or semi-skilled will be knowledge-able, self-empowered and flexibly skilled. The type of workinstead of being structured and hardware driven will be lessstructured and software driven. Management style will em-phasize more on delegation rather than giving command.Impact on environment and ecology will be strikingly lesscompared to industrial economy. Finally, the economy willmostly be driven by knowledge and knowledge driven indus-try. Now I would like to discuss the present ambience ofour country.

Ascending Economic TrajectoryIn Indian history, very rarely has our nation come across asituation, all at a time, an ascending economic trajectory, con-tinuously rising foreign exchange reserves, reduced rate ofinflation, global recognition of our technological competence, energy of 540 million youth, umbilical connectivity of 23million people of Indian origin in various parts of the planet, with the potential sharing capacity of knowledge and re-sources and interest shown by many developed countries toinvest in our engineers and scientists including setting up ofnew Research & Development Centers. The distinction be-tween public and the private sectors and the illusory primacyof one over the other is vanishing. India as the largest de-mocracy in the world has a reputation for its democracy andfor providing leadership to one billion people with multi-cul-tural, multi-language and multi-religious backgrounds. Ourtechnological competence and value systems withcivilizational heritage are also highly respected. Foreign In-stitutional Investors are finding investing in India attractive. We need to accelerate this process through hassle free singlewindow system of clearance for investment proposals. Ourindustrialists are also investing abroad and opening newbusiness ventures. The Indian economy is growing with anaverage annual GDP growth rate of over 8 to 9%. Very soon,we will be reaching the target of 10% GDP growth rate. Wehave to examine whether increasing the growth rate to 10%of GDP alone will be sufficient to promote prosperity amongthe billion people or other ingredients are also required toensure enhancement of over all national prosperity. All of ushave to work together innovatively to increase the GDPgrowth rate and also ensure that we realize inclusive growth

for one billion plus people. Now let me share with you whattype of nation will emerge by 2020.

Distinctive Profile of India 2020I visualize the distinctive profile of India with dignity to hu-man life well before the year 2020 with the following char-acteristics.

1. A nation where the rural and urban divide has reduced toa thin line. 2. A nation where there is an equitable distribu-tion and adequate access to energy and quality water. 3. Anation where agriculture, industry and service sector worktogether in symphony. 4. A nation where education with valuesystem is not denied to any meritorious candidates becauseof societal or economic discrimination 5. A nation, which isthe best destination for the most talented scholars, scientists, and investors. 6. A nation where the best of health care isavailable to all. 7. A nation where the governance is respon-sive, transparent and corruption free. 8. A nation where citi-zens feel that Indian judiciary is most dependable and people

friendly. 9. A nation where poverty has been totally eradi-cated, illiteracy removed and crimes against women andchildren are absent and none in the society feels alienated.10. A nation that is prosperous, healthy, secure, devoid ofterrorism, peaceful and happy and continues with a sustain-able growth path. 11. A nation that is one of the best placesto live in and is proud of its leadership.

Rural Innovation SystemOn 20 Dec 2007, I met Dr. D. N. Tiwari who has done ex-cellent work in Jatropha area. Under his leadership a NGOhas worked near Allahabad and converted 735 hectares ofwasteland into Jatropha producing land leading to earning ofrupees fifty thousand per hectare. Also, the village has real-ized energy independence through the use of bio-fuel. Thevillagers do not use kerosene for cooking or petrol-diesel forrunning their generators and jeeps. Jatropha cultivation hasalso been used as a heat shield for banana plantation duringsummer. Thus, through the innovative use of Jatropha social,

economic and environmental security has been realized bythe 735 farmers in a village. Such an approach is needed forpromoting rural innovation for large-scale societal impact. Allof you assembled here have a contribution to make in real-izing each one of the distinctive profile through innovativeideas, innovative communication, innovative collaboration, innovative decision-making and innovative actions. I am surethe collective innovative capacity of all the citizens and or-ganization alone can make the country great. At this stagelet me recall Maharishi Patanjali's words stated about 2,500years ago: "When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break theirbounds. Your mind transcends limitations, your conscious-ness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a

new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, facultiesand talents come alive, and you discover yourself to be agreater person by far than you ever dreamt yourself to be."If you all dream and work for it, I am sure, you will definitelysucceed in your missions through innovation. Let me con-gratulate all the award winners once again. My best wishesto EMPI, Indian Express and other innovation promotionorganizations success in their mission of making global in-novation index of India to be less than five within the nextfive years.

May God Bless You.

Innovations - The EMPI Journal of Inter-Disciplinary Perspectives

DR. ASHOK JAIN speaks… “Honourable Sir, youhave enthused us. You said we must spread theculture of innovation. We have taken a small step.We have brought out a journal on innovations, titled 'Innovations - the EMPI Journal of Inter-Disciplinary Perspectives'. Sir, please do encourageus to disseminate information collected by students, written by experts on the innovative experiences ofthe organization that have won awards. Please doencourage us by releasing the inaugural issue. I'llbe grateful, Sir…”

The Journal publishes inter-disciplinary research papersand case studies on innovations. Going beyond changes

brought about by technological innovations alone, the Journalcovers innovations in all spheres of human action, - political,

economic, social and technological. The Journal recognisesthat the very process of innovation has undergone a majorchange. In today’s world the search for ‘newness’ is notonly for new products or inventions by individuals, but moreimportantly by the entire organisation, planning andimplementing new ideas, processes and systems across theentire span of its operations. The institutionalisation of theinnovative process has become an indispensable part of alldevelopmental efforts. The Journal brings together on acommon platform varied experiences of innovativeorganisations, government, non-government agencies, corporate enterprises, educational institutions and committedindividuals. The aim is to encourage cross-fertilisation ofinnovative experiences amongst various organisations, as alsoto facilitate integrative multi-disciplinary research oninnovation in different social, cultural and economic settings.

The Journal is part of an Innovation Movement of EMPIBusiness School (Entrepreneurship Management ProcessesInternational). The movement includes presentation of annualEMPI-Indian Express Indian Innovation Awards partnered byThe Indian Express (a leading news paper), The BostonConsulting Group, Apple Computers and others.

The Innovation Movement was launched by the HonourablePresident of India, Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam while giving awaythe 2005 Indian Innovation Awards.

Research papers and case studies based on innovations bythe annual Award winners and other short listed organisationsare also published in the Journal. Project assignments atorganisations carried out by students of EMPI provide inputsto these case studies.

Innovation Journeys... Emerging DirectionsMr. Arun Maira, Chairman, The Boston Consulting Group (India)

in discussion with the Awardees

Moderator: Mr. Arun Maira, Chairman, The Boston Consulting GroupTheme: Innovation JourneysPanelists: Ms. Tara Sinha (CEO, Tara Sinha Associates) Mr. Pramod Bhasin (CEO, Genpact),Dr. G. N. Rao (Chairman, L. V. Prasad Eye Hospital), Mr. Girish Wagh (Head - SCP,Tata Motors), Mr. Shirish Purohit (CEO, Midas Communications), Mr. Vinod Kapur(MD, Keggfarms), Mr. Venkat R. Chary (Chairman, MCX), MR. A. P. Joshi (VC & MD,KSRTC)

Arun Maira: I am going to be asking these panel membershere, shortly, on your behalf, the nature of journeys they areon…Where did they start, what were the stumbles, what weretheir joy and where they are headed now? All these journeys,I noticed, as I listened to the nature of these innovations ofthese winners - they are all a part of a national innovationjourney. I noticed that all our winners are stretching beyondthat last mile to reach the rural areas. They have been stretch-ing in Mahatma Gandhi's words: to reach the last man, thelast woman and the last child.

I also noticed the use of IT in all or almost many of theseinnovations. It is said that India is the place where IT is. Itwas said that we were selling our IT skills and knowledgeoutside India, not applying it to our own causes or our own

needs. But here are examples, where people are doing it.

The beauty for us was to discover how they were organiz-ing themselves so that many people could participate andmany people could benefit out of their innovations. You willalso notice here that innovation is not restricted to just therich private sector but also in the public sector and in thesocial service sector.

Arun Maira to Tara Sinha: Could you elaborate onwhat we were looking for and what we were not lookingfor when we were searching for good innovations in thecountry?

Tara Sinha: One thing we did not want to do was not togive an award for process innovation or a product innovation,

December 2007 30A spot bulletin of EMPI Institutions

Arun Maira: What were the biggest challenges that youfaced in your innovation journey?

Mr. Venkat R. Chary, MCX: The biggest challenge thatthe commodity futures trading community facing was thatfor forty years commodity futures trading was banned in ourcountry. The challenge was to set up a 21st century, state-of-the-art computer linked satellite based exchange.

Mr. Shirish B. Purohit, Midas Communications: The bigchallenge is how to reach every individual or every village ina cost effective manner so that the money that needs to bespent on it is 100 or 200 rupees per month. Thus the capi-tal expenditure has to be very very low. Innovative tech-

nologies are to befound out so as tomaintain cost effec-tiveness. It is a bigchallenge to thetechnology develop-ers of the countrybecause you haveto create a systemthat has to makebusiness sense withthis type of idea.

Mr. A. P. Joshi,KSRTC: Around2.2 million commut-ers take the ticketsevery day, which ismore than all airlinetickets issued in a

year in India. It was a daunting task to reach our people. We cover more than 90% of Karnataka. We also commuteto the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,Kerala and we even go upto Maharashtra. So these 2 millionpeople was a big challenge.

Mr. Pramod Bhasin, Genpact: I think there were more chal-lenges. When we started we didn't have people trained onthose skills, we did not have telecom, no infrastructure, wedid not have office buildings. We had a good idea. That'sabout it. I think the challenges were making sure we couldconvince the US and UK companies to change the way theywere working, and bring their work 7000 miles away andentrust it to us.

Mr. Pankaj Baliga, TATA Consultancy Services: Thereare 200 million illiterates in India, it requires 200 hours of

The Panel Discussion in progress

but to look at it in a more holistic manner so as to see whatit did for the organization and more profoundly what it didto people outside the organization. Reading through the cita-tions of these winners, we would see that almost all are con-tributors to the larger society in improving the quality of life.It is more than just making a process change and multiplyyour profit rate. I think that was a guideline to us in the juryand you will find that it reflects in the citations of the awardwinners today.

Arun Maira: From your perspective, what do you considerthe most novel part of your innovation?

Dr. G. N. Rao, L. V. Prasad Eye Institute: I think the mostimportant compo-nent is trying tomake excellence andequity compatible.Taking the best qual-ity healthcare to allpeople in the remot-est areas, withoutcompromise.

Mr. Girish Wagh,TATA Motors: Ifyou look at the prod-uct, it was the en-gine of ACE, the in-digenously devel-oped engine whichwas the most inno-vative part of theproduct, as seen bythe customer. Because if you see today, it is the engine ofthe ACE which is delivering the maximum value to the cus-tomer. From the organizational perspective, we changed ourstructure, we changed our work systems, which gave usmore sustainable advantage in terms of coming out with moreinnovations.

Mr. Vinod Kapur, Keggfarms: It was trying to adjustour own mindsets to the reality of the village poultry asit actually happened, trying to understand what goes onat the village level. So getting our mindset into the situationwas the foremost. Secondly, producing a distribution sys-tem- how do you produce something? Genetics was a partof it. But how do you produce something in millions? Andthen, distribute them in ones and twos and threes in the re-motest of villages - house delivery in a sustainable economicfashion?

December 2007 31A spot bulletin of EMPI Institutions

training to make an adult person literate. Now adult illiter-ates who have to put food on the table do not have 200 hoursto spare. Hence the drop out rate was 86%. That was thechallenge.

Mr. Arun Maira: So that brings us down to the spark strik-ing separate people. And that someone in the government hasto feel the same spark. We have examples of governmentorganizations who have made changes. I am sure that theconstraints on government organizations in terms of govern-ance requirements, their budgeting requirements are moresevere than you in a multi national environment.

I think ultimately the lesson for me from the diversity of thevarious people here is that each of us has the potential in usto make the change that is needed. Each of us will be thatchange that we need to see in our country and in the world.

I would like to conclude the panel discussion quoting thewords of a young boy on a white horse from Macedoniawho was 16 years of age when he said this: " Gods putdreams in the heart of men, dreams that are much larger thanthey are."

The greatness of a man lies in that painful discrepancy be-tween the goal that he sets for himself and the strength ofthe nature when he came into the world. It is the nature ofthe goal that you set for yourself and never let go and real-izing that you are very small and how painful it is to reachthat goal. That is one thing I've noticed in all of these inno-vators. There was a pain they felt in the two things - one,the condition of the world around them and the other thingwas their pain regarding their inability to do something aboutit. But rather than blame the conditions around them, theytook it upon themselves to learn and change and innovatewhat they did - their ideas, their organizations, the way theypartnered themselves with others.

So to the students out there, I hope you shall have the spiritof that young man on the white horse, to be called Alexan-der the Great later.

I thank the panelists for your time and congratulations onceagain…

The Welcome Address by Dr. D.V. Kapur Chairman - The Organising Committee

Respected Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Prof. M. G. K. Menon and distinguished Members of theJury, Mr. N. P. Singh, Director, The Express Group, Mr. Arun Maira, Chairman, The BostonConsulting Group, Mr. Gurnam Saran, President, EMPI, Recipients of Indian InnovationAwards, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of the organisers of this event I welcome allthose present here and in particular to you, Sir, on this

occasion to give away the EMPI - Indian Express Indian In-novation Awards 2006. I recall your words of wisdom thatyou spoke while giving away the Awards 2005, which in-spired us and crystallized the guidelines for our pursuing In-novative India activities with missionary zeal. In the contextof development challenges in reaching different regions ofthe nation, you elaborated on the role of innovations and de-fined Innovation as the engine of Knowledge Society.

You also discussed the necessary ingredients of knowledgesociety and how knowledge is converted into wealth for so-cial goal. What could be better fitment or linkage with ourfocus on organizational innovation for service to society? With a selfish motive to reinforce energies and accelerate ourefforts, we approached you again and we are so grateful toyou for having consented to our request to give away theAwards 2006. We on our part take this opportunity torededicate ourselves in taking the movement forward.

In today's world the search for 'newness' is carried out not

only for new products or technological innovations, but moreimportantly for planning and implementing new ideas, proc-esses and systems across the entire span of corporate opera-tions. We are also witnessing significant changes beingbrought about by innovations in political, economic, socialand governance practices world over. Innovative corporationsadapt to change, to develop and create new products, proc-esses and systems important to sustain businesses in com-petitive environments.

In non-corporate areas, Governments, NGOs and other or-ganizations innovate to overcome problems of poverty, illit-eracy and healthcare, in agriculture, social development andindeed in the processes of governance itself.

What is the Indian scenario? Often India is perceived by manyas a society in which individuals may innovate but organiza-tionally tend to be conservative and resistant. However, thereare lots of success stories of individual and collective inno-vations in almost all areas of human activity but these needto be dramatically multiplied if India has to emerge as a na-tion that has a developmental model for all and is inclusive

of the deprived millions of its impoverishedcountrymen.

It is, therefore, essential to bring together anddocument the success stories and celebrate thoseinnovators and their innovations, which transcend togroups or organizations. Mission Innovative India isto promote and strengthen such a culture.

Sir, you had directed us to create synergies with thewinners. Thus EMPI took the lead in putting togethera consortium of IL&FS and AISECT- the result wasa change in national policy on 1 lakh ICT kiosks inthe country. You also directed us to disseminate casestudies widely involving students and faculty. Wehave taken significant initiatives in that regard. AJournal of Innovation was also launched to carrycase studies and academic research papers and weare launching its Inaugural issue today. ImportantlyIndian Express Group, leading and progressive media leadersjoined us to disseminate the innovation message. In additionBoston Consulting Group (BCG), global leaders in InnovationConsulting helped us with developing case studies.

The Awards process started with recognizing innovativeorganizations as role models through a rigorous evaluationprocess. Information was also disseminated through theelectronic and print media and by publishing case studies inInnovation.

Particular care was taken to cover diverse sectors - not onlyindustry, trade and business but equally the organizations thathave made major impact in improving performance throughinnovative actions in the areas of governance, education, health delivery, judiciary etc.

In response to our invitation through announcements innewspapers and through nominations by eminent people invarious fields, well over 400 award entries were received in2006.

A four stage rigorous process validated by BCG was adoptedfor evaluating the entries. In the first stage, key role wasplayed by a panel of about 25 experts with experience andexpertise in the areas of Technology, Finance, Services,Environment, Infrastructure, Education, Governance,Healthcare etc. and each entry was evaluated by 2 or 3experts keeping in view the following aspects:

• Newness of the Innovation

• Implementation record of the Innovation

• Impact of the Innovation

In the second stage evaluators were divided in following fourgroups:

• Business and Technology group

• Social Sectors group

• Infrastructure & Services group

• Governance group

In the third stage each group defended its selection to othergroups resulting in a shortlist of 20 entries. Finally in thefourth stage, the Jury consisting of some of the mostdistinguished persons well known for leadership in theirrespective fields and chaired by legendary Professor M. G.K. Menon did the final selection of awardees.

This extensive evaluation process ultimately narrowed to arich portfolio of 9 outstanding and 5 commendable organi-sations.

Sir, I will also try to give you a glimpse of the profile ofeach of the selected organizations, which would indicate howdiverse those are in nature:

1. An organization from the state transport sector consid-ered notorious for inefficiency and poor service, for theircarrying out innovations for successful delivery of mul-tiple end results ranging from quality customer care, en-vironmental protection and high efficiencies.

2. A state level government organization for successful andsustainable implementation of village level cleanliness

through self-help by villagers and panchayats in over 300villages.

3. A large corporate entity for discharging social responsi-bility of high order in pioneering computer modules toprovide functional literacy to adults within 40 hours.

4. An organization though not so well known to people, forrevolutionizing the commodity markets to a level that itfeatured amongst world's top exchanges.

5. Yet another organization, which has done pioneeringwork in rural areas by propagating a viable poultry culturebuilt on micro entrepreneurship among the rural poor.

6. An excellent example in the area of academia industrynetworking to innovate voice and broadband data tel-ecommunication products providing cost effective com-munication between the rural and urban centers.

7. An engineering organization for pioneering a culture ofinnovation in advanced technological field, generally con-sidered possible only with the support of a major proveninternational partner.

8. The case of a foreign entity, which, as pioneers, broughtinto India a new business sector from concept to viable

and replicable business model resulting in India becom-ing an outsourcing hub.

9. The field of healthcare wherein an institute is recognizedfor innovative approach in providing sustainable andcomprehensive rehabilitation and community health eyecare in remote as well as urban areas.

In addition to above 9 gold trophies, Jury has selected 5organizations for silver trophies in the following areas:

1. Innovation in the process of construction in India andsetting new standards.

2. Reducing cost and time in design/product development.

3. Adaptation of IT for improved logistics and cost reduc-tion.

4. Expanding the scope of IT industry from conventionaloutsources service and applications market to investingin R&D.

May I now request Chairman of the Jury and my respectedcolleague Prof. M.G. K. Menon to say a few words.

Thank you

Opening Remarks by Prof. M. G. K. MenonChairman - The Jury

Prof. M. G. K. Menon, Chairman, The Jury

Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Former President of India, Dr. D. V. Kapur, Mr. N. P. Singh, IndianExpress, Mr. Gurnam Saran, EMPI, distinguished invitees,

It gives me great pleasure to say a few words on this occa-sion. As the Chairman of the Jury, I've had a very distin-

guished group of individuals who constituted the jury. Wehad a wonderful set of nominations, which were actuallydone by the companies, and the institutions concerned onwhat they thought was the innovation they had introducedat an institutional or organizational level. I certainly believethat the individuals, entrepreneurs and discoverers in scienceare important because the world where it is today is the resultof these discoveries, innovations and entrepreneurs being ableto function through a system. And that system is the inno-vative system of an institutional or organizational nature. Andwe see many examples of that in the awardees on this oc-casion. And as the citations are read, you will see the widespectrum of coverage of those responsible for the innova-tions. I believe that there are many awards that are givenfor discoveries, like the Nobel Prize, given each year insubjects of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine orthe Life Sciences apart from the ones given in Literature,Peace and now Economics. But I would like to say thatbeyond these discoveries what really happens and how theyget implemented in such a way that the society is totallytransformed. You will be amazed, I have in the small book-let in the folder, that an account of original discovery of X-

ray has transformed medicine, biotechnology, material sci-ence and a whole range of areas. It has become common-place today. But there were people who made it happen andthose people are the organizations who picked up the ideaand made it important for the society to transform itself. Iknow individually the person who was responsible for thebasic idea of what is today called the worldwide web. Eve-rybody here must be using it. But for the worldwide webto become what it is today, a commonplace item, hugenumber of things have to come together. All of internet hadto come together. Internet protocols had to come together. The application areas had to be relevant. And therefore wenow have the totality of Information Technology availableat our fingertips through an initial discovery but transformedby organizational and institutional innovations. And that iswhat we are aiming for. It is the spirit of innovation thatwe want to cultivate at an organizational level, at an institu-tional level and it can be done through a whole range ofmeasures and steps taken in each organization and in thecountry as a whole. So I hope that this award function andthe presence of Dr. Abdul Kalam, who as the President ofIndia, gave away the first set of awards of 2005 will in-spire many more.

Thank you.

Mr. Gurnam Saran, President, EMPI Group of Insitutions

Vote of Thanks by Mr. Gurnam Saran,President - EMPI Group of Institutions

Honb’le Chief Guest for the evening, H.E. Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Ladies & Gentlemen,For me, personally it is a very emotional repeat when I recall 7th March 2005, when I pre-sented to you, Sir, the dream of the young team of EMPI working at our center for innovationenterprise and intellectual property with the dream of making India innovative. We thoughtof promoting a culture of innovation.

When we looked around, we realized that innovationwas not new to the culture of India. We had done it

in the past. We are doing it now. But then the realization theseare two eureka types of innovations where individuals comeout with new ideas, our discussions led us to conclude thatorganizations that fit in innovation are rarely recognized. The thought caught momentum when we approached Prof.M. G. K. Menon and Dr. D. V. Kapur, both stalwarts andscientists who had brought India to the world of Science -the India, which is, recognized world over today, especiallyin the field of space. Dr. Kapur, the wonderful engineer whohas worked both in private and public sector, in governmentsector and is currently on board the Reliance Industries.

In 2005, we were looking at a very big picture but we didnot know how to go about it. The only thought that came tomy mind and my colleague's mind was to put the first switchon the trigger and the idea of awards was born. That's how

we approached the then President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalamand we knew his involvement in science, innovation and tech-nology and whatever will take India up to the fore. We hada very prompt reply. We had just about 10 weeks to launchthis award. In about 10 weeks around 596 responses wereready. We hurriedly put our jury together. Prof. M. G. K.Menon agreed and he got the best minds of India not limitedto various fields but to an entire spectrum. We also got a teamof 30 expert evaluators who promptly responded and theprocess of identification was settled.

I was not sure that we would be continuing with this in thesame fervour, but I was optimistic. And this year we havehad 400 more responses and we have crossed the number1000. All this has really motivated our team. When I look atour former President, I think he is an icon of the youth andwe went to him to get more and more advices, and whateverwill make India big. The function was held on 7th March,

2005. It was called ‘Bhoomi Poojan’. We had a big picturein mind. And I am still very apprehensive because many atime we open the first chapter of the book and then weforget it. We found also that the President was looking at2020 and we thought that it was a good time period in whichwe could align our dream with what we were visualizing. It brought to fore where the society was, and where thesociety was moving. We talked of Knowledge Society. Wehave seen how fast the society is moving, particularly thesoftware and telecom industry have shown us where we canpreach if we put our hands together and work. It remindedus of the ingredients of innovation, how to build them andfinally how to carry them to the rural masses. It againreminded us that the real innovation would be effective onlyif a lot more people in the rural areas benefit them. We talkedof connectivity, communicating right across the masses. Wefocused on communication. We had a very enthusiasticIndian Express joining us and we decided to go along to thefinal destination of 2020. We found in Apple Computers, whohave set up a very beautiful Wi-Fi environment in the EMPIBusiness School campus to web cast what is happeningtoday to the world. This has also been a period of greatlearning. We also realized that the aim to achieve is very big.And we have a very big task to bring all the bodies together.

Dear Sir, it is a great honour to have you with us. And I amlooking forward to sailing along with you to 2020 and carrythis mission to the rural masses of India. You have added toour thoughts and reinforced some of the dimensions, par-ticularly when we are informed that we stand 23rd in the worldhierarchy of innovators. I can assure you that with so manypeople coming along and the momentum with which the proc-ess is catching, we may be there before the date you haveset for us. Thank you very much, Sir. We would like to thankthe senior officials from the Government of India, as well asthe Governments of Maharashtra and Karnataka, Delhi andRajasthan, Prof. Menon and the distinguished members of thejury, Mr. Arun Maira and his team of evaluators, the AppleComputers team and NTPC, who have sponsored the megaevent and all the winners who have come from different partsof the country and the Press in particular who have agreedto cover this event and carry the message of innovation todifferent parts of the country and beyond.

I would like to thank the staff of the Taj Palace Hotel, myown colleagues at EMPI and a very enthusiastic team of stu-dents - in fact all 700 of them wanted to come here. How-ever due to limitation of space, we could not bring themalong. Thank you very much Sir, and to all of you…

Interview Session with Awardees - Excerpts from The Apple Webcast

GENPACTWEBCASTER: How does it feel to receive this award?

PRAMOD BHASIN, CEO: It feels wonderful. It is agreat honour to win this award. And Dr. Kalam is aninspiring leader. He, more than most other people inthose positions have an idea about innovations andcreativity, given his background as a scientist. And hisview of what he wants to do, or what he wants India tobecome is wonderful. I hope we get there. It is wonder-ful to hear it.

KSRTCWEBCASTER: From a loss making PSU to a profit-able venture. What was the main thing that broughtabout this change?

M. A. SALEEM, DIGP & DIR: Basically it is theprofessional management, which is responsible for theturnaround of KSRTC. For the last 6 years, we areinto profits and the good feelings always brought inmore innovations- particularly the ATMs, the bio-fuelinitiatives and the advanced ticket reservations. Allthese have added to our innovative causes.

KEGGFARMSWEBCASTER: How do you feel being a winner onthis?

VINOD KAPUR, CHAIRMAN: Very encouraged. When you do a work like this, because it is your pas-sion with you, it is something that possesses you andwhen somebody acknowledges you, it becomes inspi-rational and helps you carry on your work with greaterenthusiasm.

LVPRASADWEBCASTER: To what extent can this award influ-ence the work that you are doing?

DR. GULLAPALLI N. RAO, CHAIRMAN: Any timeany one gets an award, it increases your responsibility. And you have to work hard to deserve that award andcontinue to be deserving of that award. We’ll continueto innovate to make sure everybody in India and inother developing countries be freed of all needlessblindness. That task will continue and this kind of rec-ognition will give us greater encouragement to moveforward to achieve our goal.

December 2007 41A spot bulletin of EMPI Institutions

MIDAS COMMUNICATIONSWEBCASTER: How do you feel at this moment?

SHIRISH B. PUROHIT, CEO: It has been a greatfeeling. And it gives us lots of impetus, a lot of en-couragement when industry experts, academics or me-dia will acknowledge what you have been doing foryears. And it gives many ways to access more people, access more customers, access more targets. More im-portantly, it gives you a feeling of achievement.

MCXWEBCASTER: What is the innovative part of yourwork?

JIGNESH SHAH, CEO: The innovative part is tocreate technology, create market place, to take thepower of market to the rural masses, give them a veryclear and equitable inclusive growth and benefits ofglobalization, straight to the heartland of India andlink them with global markets. So power of markets tothe masses is the innovation, using technology, byIndians, in India, for India.

TCSWEBCASTER: I hope this award gives yourprogramme all the boost that is necessary.

PANKAJ M. BALIGA, VP, CSR: I hope so, too. Manypeople have been talking about this. In South Africa, where illiteracy conditions are similar, the First Ladywas highly impressed about this program. We have cre-ated this program in one of the South African lan-guages. UNESCO is now looking how they can takethis forward in similarly affected countries.

TATA MOTORSWEBCASTER: What were the biggest challenges youhad to face while you were coming up with this bigidea?

S. RAVISHANKAR, SGM-ERC: The biggestchallenge was to make a product that could meet cus-tomer expectations and in order to do that, we did awide spread investigation of what the customers wantedfrom this product. We took a lot of time analyzing thedata to decide what is the product that should be madeto meet the customer expectations. And thereafter wehad a very young team on the product development ofthis, which was headed by Mr. Girish and they did amarvelous job with their empowerment to make ithappen.

December 2007 42A spot bulletin of EMPI Institutions

WATER SUPPLY & SANITATIONDEPT, GOVT. OF MAHARSHTRAWEBCASTER: Would like to give a message to theaspiring innovators?

AJIT KUMAR JAIN, PRINCIPAL SECRETARY:Our message is that we should always believe in thepower of the people, the strength that the communityhas, whether it is sanitation or water supply or anyother reform and once you recognize them, you have togive them support and facilitate them. I think that isthe most important agent of change.

HPCLWEBCASTER: What do you plan to maintain thatuniqueness of HPCL to give it an edge over itscompetitors?

ARUN BALAKISHNAN, CHAIRMAN & MD: Thebasic objective is to make sure that the customer getsthe correct quantity and quality of the fuel that he haspaid for. That can be done in many ways. We haveemployed technology to do that monitoring. I can sithere, and monitor on my laptop any of the 2000outlets where the equipment has been installed. Thatis innovation. I would use the word, unobtrusive. Withthis kind of technology, you can’t go wrong. You don’tcatch the wrong thief. And the very fact that thistechnology is available there dissuades people fromdoing anything wrong. That’s the more importantthing.

L&T - ECCWEBCASTER: How would you define innovation atthis occasion?

V. B. GADGIL, EXECUTIVE VP: Innovation is think-ing absolutely on new terms and having lateral think-ing rather than thinking in a conventional manner.Innovation is required in all facets of our life toincrease the efficiency of everything that we do.

MAHINDRA & MAHINDRAWEBCASTER: What is the feeling at this point oftime? How does this award matter?

RAM MANRAO, SENIOR VP, PRODUCTDEVELOPMENT, R&D: It is a great feeling. In fact,we have won many awards for many activities that weare carrying out, esp in PDRDS, ie, Product Develop-ment & R&D Services. This award is more importantbecause it is an award on innovation, in whichMahindra is well known, in both processes andproducts, where innovations happen everyday.

December 2007 43A spot bulletin of EMPI Institutions

MINDTREE CONSULTINGWEBCASTER: What has been the biggest businessimpact of the Bluetooth innovation that your organi-zation did?

VINOD P. DESHMUKH, EVP & CTO, R&DSERVICES: In fact Visheshwar Hegde would be themost appropriate person to talk on that, yet I will givemy perspective on that. Essentially for Mindtree,Bluetooth happens to be one of the IPs that we havedone. It is much more than just a Bluetooth, but an IPled business model. So the different kind of businessmodels based on Intellectual Property – like thelicensing model, engineering services model, customization model. Thus it opens up door for manyother business models through that. So, the impact hasbeen that it has created mindset of research, mindsetof IP led business and a downstream of engineeringbusinesses through that. So that’s one of the significantimpact for us and I see that its encouraging a lot morepeople to join us even when we do campus recruitmentand people joining us from other companies becausepeople want to work in high end technologies.

TRIPURA FOREST DEVELOPMENT &PLANTATION CORPORATIONWEBCASTER: What were the challenges youfaced in convincing ordinary nomads to a permanentsettlement?

V. K. BAHAUGUNA, MD: We were not dealing onlywith tribals. There were a lot more others who aredependent on the forests. There was the Bengalipopulation who were up rooted from East Pakistan. The tribals were told about the model of things tocome, and they were really hard put on achieving thatgoal. Because they were facing shortened jhoom cycle. There was no soil. Land was getting degraded. Sowhen they came to know that there were modernpractices that they could avail, they were enthusiastic. Now all tribal population are demanding rubberplantation. But rubber plantation is banned on forestareas. Around 60% of the area is forest. We are atpresent trying to convince the Government of Indiato give us permission to have rubber plantation onsome of these areas where the forest is degraded sothat we can settle these jhoomia cultivators who areotherwise honey combing the forests. And there are nontribal population who indulge in smuggling activitieswho can brought into decent livelihood by providingopportunities of rubber plantation.

- Gold Trophy Winner“I finally received the e-mail that you had earlier sent onthe captioned subject. Where the awards are concerned, Ican only state that we were Singularly pleased as beingchosen by your Selection Committee to receive theInnovation Award for Infrastructure in 2005. This was agreat fillip for the morale of our organization, and alsouseful in communicating the initiatives of our organizationto a wider public. As you know, most organizations thatengage in innovation tend to be publicity shy, and prefer tolet their products speak for themselves.

On another plane, I think the preparation we had to do toprovide you the requisite information was itself a learningexercise for our Institution. Although we are not a largeorganization in terms of head count, we have literally ascore of specialized teams, and it was quite a challenge toget each one of them to come forth with their product, experience and documentation within the short period inwhich we had to submit the same for your consideration.

I think you have developed a good format and yourassociation with the Indian Express Group will certainlyrender the award to be recognised as an importantattribution to any Company’s corporate performance.

My best wishes on this occasion.”

“I am happy to know that than Indian Innovation Awardis contributing significantly to address the problem ofbridging the gap between the haves and the have not’s.Unfortunately, media relishes bad news than good news. There are so many innovations happening in this country, which will make India perhaps the first country in the worldto dissociate essentialities of life like healthcare andeducation from affluence. In the years to come largemillions of people will continue to live in the slums likebefore. However, when they fall sick when they are in painthey will have access to high-technology healthcare withdignity like an American or European and as soon as thetreatment is over in an exclusive hospital, they will go backto the same slum they came from. Similarly, children fromthese slums and children from villages will have access togood quality education, which will not be linked with theaffluence. I am convinced that this can only happen inIndia and then the rest of the world will follow. For all thesemajor transformation to happen, innovations in these areashave to be highlighted, supported, appreciated andcherished.

Indian Innovation Award will do this in a significant manner.I should congratulate you and compliment you for yourwonderful work in making this world a better place to live.”

Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman,Narayana Hrudayalaya

“The Indian Innovation Award was conferred on us in 2005in recognition of our scientific contributions & innovativestrategies to give the economically weak rural growers abetter return and the urban consumers an increased valuefor their money. We could make this happen by removingthe ill effects of the conventional methods of cropmanagement & inefficiencies in the supply chain and alsoby providing a direct link between the farmer and theconsumer leaving no role for any middleman.

The award has encouraged us to move on the continuouspath of innovations adding economic value to all stake-holders in the supply chain - beginning with millions of ruralproducers who are miles away from the market and theend users who begin their day with MOTHER DAIRY &SAFAL products. The award has also boosted the moraleof our employees & business associates who havecollectively translated our vision into reality.”

“Innovation can be defined as something that has increasedproductivity tremendously by just a small change in thebusiness process or technology. At NSE, we identified thepain areas of our core business which involved access tosmall retail investors from all across the country on anequal footing. Technological solutions were used by re-engineering the various business processes to achieve theirobjectives by doing an A, B, C analysis (detailed analysis)keeping the customer, the employees and the risk involvedin mind. All this resulted in a highly innovative organizationfor governance of capital markets in India.

The recognition for these innovative initiatives at the IndianInnovation Awards gave us the confidence of moving at afaster pace in this area of Innovation.”
