For 95 years, our mission of providing a high quality music education to everyone has offered life-changing experiences to our students and our broader community. I invite you to look through this year’s program catalog to learn how you can grow and be challenged musically in a community referred to by many as their chosen family. CMC is proud to have played an important role this past year in the lives of over 2,500 students and thou-sands of audience members who have enjoyed free or low-cost concerts at our Capp Street concert hall and at other locations around the Bay Area.

Welcome to Community Music Center!

1912 The music department of the Dolores Street Girl’s Club settlement house is founded by Gertrude Field.

1921 Gertrude Field establishes Community Music School and moves to 544 Capp Street.

1926 The auditorium, upstairs offices and four practice rooms are added to the original building on Capp Street.

1953 Community Music School becomes Community Music Center.

1973 The San Francisco Children’s Chorus, now the CMC Children’s Chorus, is formed.

1983 Community Music Center opens its Richmond District Branch.

1987 CMC’s Comprehensive Musicianship Program launches.

1991 CMC creates the tuition-free Young Musicians Program in collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District.

1994 Community Music Center’s Latin music program begins as a residency of the California Arts Council.

1995 The CMC Teen Jazz Band is founded as a free program.

2006 CMC pilots the tuition-free Mission District Young Musicians Program, Latin music education for students who live or attend school in the Mission.

2012 CMC purchases 552 Capp Street, the building next door to its main branch in the Mission District.

2016 CMC celebrates its 95th birthday with CMC Field Day on November 20, 2016!

2011 CMC launches the first of its older adult choirs, the Solera Singers.

At our Mission and Richmond District Branches, CMC provides instruction in 30 different instru-ments, opportunity to join a variety of ensembles, and courses in subjects such as music theory and songwriting. Our faculty comes together to support a program that is rich and diverse in musical styles and traditions. The structure of our offerings allows students of all levels and back-grounds to cultivate interests and find their path. With ages of our students spanning over 90 years, CMC believes that it is never too late to study music.

CMC Model for Musical Study

Private lessons: The foundation of instruc-tion at CMC, private lessons provide guidance through the process of learning to play an instrument or sing. Designed to nurture indi-vidual talent, lessons help students learn how to practice, develop technical skill, improve musicianship, and gain a knowledge of and appreciation for musical works (see page 3). Theory, Musicianship and Composition classes: These classes offer a deeper under-standing of how music works and help stu-dents with rhythm, ear training, reading, com-position and performance skills (See page 29).

Ensemble classes: Complementing instru-mental and voice lessons, ensemble classes give students the opportunity to make music with others (See page 13).

Performances: Students can share their progress and talents and develop performance skills through concerts at CMC and other loca-tions around the Bay Area. CMC’s over 300 an-nual recitals and concerts also give students a chance to hone their listening skills and hear students, faculty and other musicians perform. Students are invited to participate in recitals

every quarter. Juried evaluations in May of-fer students the opportunity to: get feedback from other faculty members, audition for the all-level All School Recital held in June, and, if age 18 or under and receiving financial aid, audition for private lesson merit scholarships. Styles: Private and group classes are avail-able in many styles, including: western classi-cal, jazz, Latin, blues, folk, rock, popular, East-ern European and Middle Eastern.

Adult Certificate Program: This program provides a guided course of study to students of all levels, integrating all elements of the CMC Model for Musical Study (See page 34).

Exam preparation: Some CMC faculty can prepare students for the MTAC (Music Teach-ers Association of California), ASTA (American String Teachers Association), ABRSM (Associ-ated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music/Canada) ex-ams if desired. Ask a registrar for more informa-tion, and see Private Lessons on pages 3 and 4.

Getting StartedThinking about music lessons? Considering a new instrument for you or your child?

CMC offers the following private lessons:

Infants to age 3: Family Music

Ages 4-8: Music for Children

Ages 4 and up: violin, viola and cello (with instructor’s consent)

Ages 6 and up: piano (with instructor’s consent)

Ages 8-12: Children’s Chorus, Guitar and Percussion for Kids

Ages 8 and up: all other private lessons (voice lessons for 8-12 year olds with instructor’s consent)

Ages 10 and up: Chamber Ensembles for kids with two or more years of musical experience

Age Guidelines for Children:

• Attend CMC’s free or low cost concerts and quarterly CMC Sundays (see page 35).

• Visit music stores and ask to try out the instrument(s) that interest you.

• Consider the types of music you or your child enjoy.

• Find out if there are any physical limitations (injuries, hand size, etc.) to keep in mind.

• Think about any issues with transporting the instrument.

• Consider the cost to rent (from CMC or else-where), buy, and maintain the instrument.

Chamber Music for YouthStudents ages 10-18 have the opportunity to play in supportive small ensembles, coached by CMC faculty. Students should have at least two years of experience playing their instrument. Pre-formed groups as well as individuals are encouraged to apply. Please visit page 13 to learn more about the Chamber Music Program.

Children’s ChorusYoung singers: find your voice and learn to blend it into a group. We will work on basic ear training, sight singing and performance skills in an envi-ronment that emphasizes cooperation, teamwork and fun. The CMC Children’s Chorus presents at least three concerts each year at CMC, and per-forms out in the community.

Ages: 8-12

Musical Styles: Popular, jazz, multicultural folk, showtunes, originals

Prerequisites: A strong desire to sing and families committed to supporting their children’s experience

Class Size: Maximum 25 students

Location, Days and Times:Mission District BranchMondays and Wednesdays, 4:00-5:30pm

Tuition: Tuition-free, however a $45 annual registration fee is required Class does not meet during summer quarter.

Family MusicThis is a mixed-age music class for infants to three-year olds and their parents and other caregivers – a musical bonding experience and an introduction to singing, rhythmic activities, movement and musical play. Each child partici-pates at his or her own level, and the adults sing, move and play along with the children. Rhythmic rhymes and songs for one-on-one finger plays with your child, or group singing and dancing in a circle. More than one adult can attend with a registered child.

Ages: 0-3

Instruments: Voice and percussion instruments provided by CMC

Group Guitar for KidsThis class introduces children to guitar in a social environment. Youngsters ages 8-12 will learn how to create a good tone, establish a steady beat, play in rhythm, and internalize melody and song. Students will learn a variety of songs from folk, rock, pop and world music repertoire. These songs will allow students to practice the

fundamentals they learn in class. It is highly rec-ommended that children enroll during the Fall Quarter. Each quarter will have a different focus and will build on the prior quarter’s content. Fall Quarter will focus on melody and rhythm, Winter Quarter on chords and songs, and Spring Quar-ter on reading music. New students can enroll after Fall Quarter with the instructor’s consent.

Percussion for KidsThis course is designed to introduce young people to songs, rhythms, and the joy of making music in a group. Students will play Afro-Caribbean rhythms and will learn about dynamics, sound quality, staying in rhythm, following the conductor, and listening and playing at the same time in a group setting. No experience is necessary to participate!

Teen Jazz OrchestraLed by composer, bassist, and teacher Marcus Shelby, CMC’s Teen Jazz Orchestra performs the music of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Count Basie, other composers, and original composi-tions. Students study the history of American music and are encouraged to write and arrange for the orchestra. Each class includes a discussion about the history of the music, development of the blues, theory, listening sessions, video, and imagining the possibilities of our music. There will be a performance at the end of each quarter.

Youth Wind EnsembleThe Youth Wind Ensemble provides an enjoyable environment in which to learn skills such as tun-ing and blending with other instruments, follow-ing a conductor, playing leading and supporting roles, transposition, music theory basics, and be-ginning improvisation. Students are also invited to try their hand at writing for the ensemble or conducting (optional).

Ages: 10-16 (depending on skill level)

Musical Styles: Popular, classical, jazz, folk, traditional

Prerequisites: Students should have completed a method book with their private instructor. Students should know major scales up to two sharps and two flats and have mastered basic rhythms including eighth notes and syncopation. Admission with instructor’s consent.

Young Musicians Program (YMP)CMC’s Young Musicians Program has brought the many benefits of music—artistic, educational, personal, and social—to middle and high school students since it began in 1987. This tuition-free, award-winning program embraces diversity, partners with the San Francisco Unified School District, and offers a comprehensive, culturally diverse curriculum. Group classes explore theory, musicianship and composition. Ensemble classes may play Latin, classical, jazz and other music forms in orchestra, chamber groups, combos and bands.

Students who are nominated by their public school teacher will audition in Spring 2017 for the following academic year. If accepted, students are eligible for a full scholarship that provides stu-dents with weekly free private instrumental les-sons theory/musicianship and ensemble classes for the academic year. The YMP program focuses on serving middle and high school students from low-income San Francisco households.

Students who are nominated by CMC private lesson teachers are eligible for a scholarship for group theory/musicianship and ensemble classes for the academic year.

Ages: 12-18

Instruments: All

Musical Styles: Classical, jazz, popular

Prerequisites/Requirements: Minimum of two years playing an instrument. Students nomi-nated by their public school teacher must re-main in their school music programs during the program to qualify. Students nominated by their CMC teacher must stay in their private lessons at CMC to qualify. Admission is based on both need and merit.

Class Size: 4-30 students working in small groups and orchestra

Young Musicians Program

Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP)The tuition-free Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP) offers a comprehensive music education with a focus on Latin music. It primarily serves Latino youth from the Mission District who are nominated by their public school music teach-ers and community organizations. The curriculum focuses on music of Latin America and is taught by bilingual (Spanish/English) instructors. Group classes take place at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts each Saturday and private lessons can take place at either CMC branch. Students perform in December and June, and will have ad-ditional performance opportunities off-site.

Ages: 12-18

Instruments: All and voice

Musical Styles: Latin (classical and popular)

Prerequisites: Minimum two years playing an instrument or singing. Students nominated by their public school teacher must remain in their school music programs during the program to qualify. Students nominated by their CMC teacher

must stay in their private lessons at CMC to qual-ify. Admission is based on both need and merit.

Class Size: 25 students working in small groups

Camp CMC An Ensemble Camp for Young Musicians

Make great music and new friends at Commu-nity Music Center this summer! Camp CMC offers young musicians the chance to play in small and large groups and explore many musical styles with our diverse faculty. In past years, campers have played Latin, jazz, classical, blues, folk, rock, spirituals, swing, American Songbook, Klezmer and more. Students are grouped in ensembles by instrument (including voice) and level. There are lots of chances to work on general musicianship skills, too, like playing percussion, singing, and rhythmic movement. Campers will share their work in a big performance at the end of the week.

Chamber Music CampDelight in playing chamber music with others!

Spend a week this summer playing in supportive small ensembles, coached daily by CMC faculty. Students may also participate in master classes, large ensembles by instrument, and daily inde-pendent chamber music rehearsals. Pre-formed groups as well as individuals are encouraged to apply. An informal recital will be presented at the end of camp. Music will be mailed to participants early to allow adequate time for practice with private teachers before the beginning of camp. 11

Musical Discovery CampPlaying Together: Sounds, Rhythms and Songs

CMC’s Musical Discovery Camp introduces kids to songs, rhythms and the joys of making music. Previous experience singing or playing an instru-ment is welcome by not required. The week’s ac-tivities will include singing, rhythm work, a basic introduction to music theory, and introduction to guitar and/or percussion. Campers will be part of an ensemble where they will learn about dy-namics, sound quality, listening and playing at the same time, staying in rhythm, and following the conductor. At the end of the week, students will share their work in an informal performance.

Chamber Music EnsemblesWhether you are an advanced beginner or an ac-complished amateur musician, CMC’s chamber music program offers an opportunity to develop your musicianship and technique as well as the chance to play with others. Groups are composed of two to five students of compatible levels. Ad-vanced beginners and intermediate students will focus on developing basic ensemble skills, intonation, tone quality, and rhythmic accuracy. Advanced students will study important aspects

of ensemble playing, including interpretation and performance techniques. Each quarter, per-formers will give a group recital as their last class session.

Prerequisites: At least two years of experi-ence playing an instrument is required. To create groups of similarly-skilled musicians, placement auditions for new students take place at the beginning of each quarter. Collegium MusicumThis ensemble focuses on the music of England, France, Germany, and Italy from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Students will learn ornamentation and rhythmic practices, idiomatic techniques and interpretations of the repertoire.

JAZZ Beginning Jazz ImprovisationLearn basic concepts, terminology, and strategies for jazz improvisation and develop a repertoire along the way. Djangology 101Step into the world of Parisian Hot Jazz circa 1935 with this comprehensive course for beginning to intermediate students. Learn some of the most important repertoire in what has come to be called “Gypsy Jazz,” as your instructor guides you through the history and techniques that distin-guish this genre. We will focus on the composi-tions and recordings of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, along with a brief survey of their most notable predecessors and successors. Topics include rhythmic, harmonic and melodic applications; improvising tips and tricks; and his-tory and theory analysis.

Jazz EnsembleExplore a standard jazz repertoire in a dynamic, participatory setting. LATIN Cuban Salsa EnsembleLearn to play Cuban salsa, charanga and other Af-ro-Cuban popular music in an ensemble setting. Play cha-cha-chá, danzón, guaracha, bolero, son and other Afro-Cuban dance music styles. Dur-ing the course of the class, students will have the opportunity to develop improvisational skills and deepen their understanding of diverse Afro-Cu-ban popular music forms. Emphasis will be given to the study of “clave” (a key Afro-Cuban rhythmic concept) and how it relates to each instrument, and to the style performed. The Cuban Salsa En-semble is a performance-oriented ensemble. There will be winter and spring performances at CMC and in the community as opportunities arise.

Latin Percussion EnsembleDevelop a solid foundation on all of the major Latin percussion instruments through a vari-ety of Latin music styles and rhythms, including son, salsa, cumbia, merengue, bachata, Brazilian, and timba. Learn technique on congas, bongos, timbales, bells, and additional minor percus-sion instruments. The class will explore soloing techniques and typical breaks, song forms, team work, and musicianship. Students will also work on singing while playing percussion. This class provides a good foundation for the Cuban Salsa Ensemble.

The CMC Cantabile ChoirCalling all experienced, classical singers! We are forming a new and dynamic classical choir this year at Community Music Center. We’ll work on phrasing, pronunciation, tuning, dynamics, and stylistic nuances of four-part choral repertoire from around the world — from Renaissance to Contemporary musical styles. The instructor, Martha Rodríguez-Salazar, has an extensive back-ground as a choral singer and director in Mexico City and San Francisco. There will be at least one concert at the end of each quarter.

Composition Classes Composition Workshop IAspiring composers, develop your composi-tion skills and find your creative voice! Learn about the basic elements and tools of musical composition: rhythm, melody, and counter-point. With guided listening across a range of musical periods, you will receive an introduc-tion to basic musical structures and variation forms, as well as elements of musical analysis. You will describe and discuss weekly composition assignments in class and work towards a final piece that is one to two minutes long.

Music Theory IIIThis class continues the course of study set out in Theory I and II, with more of an emphasis on com-positional work and homework. The first phase of the class will be a quick review of materials from earlier theory classes. Then we will explore con-cepts that take an ever-expanding view of music into account, discussing elements that relate to larger forms and structures, while trying to keep the smaller details in mind. The instructor will provide all course materials. Topics covered in-clude: phrases and cadences, the sequence, the motive and motive development, modulation/key-changes, musical forms, modes, and coun-terpoint.

Prerequisites: Students who did not take Theory I and or II are invited to join the class if they have previous experience. Communicating with the instructor before the first class meeting is recommended.

Our body is our instrument. How we use it in-fluences the quality of our movements and the sounds we make with our voices and instruments. This group class will present tools to free yourself from tension, pain, and injury in order to improve the quality and longevity of your musical life. You may also find innovative sources for expres-sion, composition, and improvisation based on the somatic methods of Feldenkrais® and Body-Mind Centering.® We will explore the relationship between the body and the mind through move-ment, guided attention and non-verbal dialogue. This work can create fertile ground for new per-formances and improvisation. In the process, stu-dents may find improvements in breathing, tone, coordination, and technical proficiency as well as overcome performance anxiety. Argentine Tango Dance “Tango is about listening and moving as one in each other’s arms.” Join award-winning teacher Sonja Riket, as she helps you connect with your-self, your partners and the beautiful, rich Tango music from the Golden Era (1930-50’s). With the basic steps of the three styles and rhythms of the Argentine Tango, we will learn how to feel the music in our bodies and express it through our movements in an improvisational dance. Cultural and historical elements will be woven into the teachings. At the end of the quarter, we will practice our dancing to live music from the CMC Tango Ensemble: a unique opportunity! To experience the social aspect of Argentine Tango dance, students are encouraged to attend CMC’s

Milongas (social Tango dance gatherings) with a drop-in class and dancing to recorded and live Tango music. After a long and worldwide profes-sional dance career, Sonja Riket has taught Tango in the Bay Area for 16 years and regularly hosts Argentine Tango music and dance events in the community.

CMC offers weekly, individual music therapy for children and adults with special needs. This program is suitable for individuals with physical, emotional, cognitive and social challenges. Our experienced board certified music therapists are person-centered and provide a platform for individuals of all abilities to achieve personal growth. Clients may develop musical skills and awareness as they work on individualized goals. Based on the assessment and input from client and parent/caregiver, an individualized treatment plan may be requested.

The Adult Certificate Program (ACP) guides students of all skill levels through an integrated course of study. Your certificate program is built around your instrument or your voice, musical style (such as classical, Latin or jazz), and your personal goals. You will work with the ACP Coordinator to develop the overarching goals of your studies and create a personalized curriculum. Routine advisory meetings are scheduled to exchange feedback and evaluate your progress with written reports. Your coursework will bring together a unique combination of Community Music Center’s wide array of offerings in private lessons, theory, musicianship and ensembles. You will also be encouraged to give benchmark and cul-minating performances at CMC’s concert hall or other community venues.

Start your program at the beginning of any quarter and complete it in the recommended four to six quarters. Programs are built with a minimum of eight courses selected from CMC’s four core areas of study below.

Community Music Center collaborates with numer-ous arts and non-arts organizations to provide music education both on and off-site. These collaborations include programming with Bethany Center Senior Housing/Ruth’s Table, Laguna Honda Hospital, the San Francisco Unified School District and various San Francisco Public Library branches. CMC is in the fifth year of a partnership with UCSF and the SF Department of Aging and Adult Services through which 12 choirs have been created at senior centers throughout San Francisco. CMC’s Older Adult Choir program has grown as choirs have cycled out of the Community of Voices research study (see pages 24-28 for more information).

Concert Hall Performances, Rentals & Recordings

Performances at CMC CMC presents music in our Mission District branch Concert Hall throughout the year. Perfor-mances range from world class touring musicians to performances from our esteemed faculty’s professional groups, to student recitals. Please check www.sfcmc.org for calendar listings.

Concert Hall RentalsCMC’s Mission District Branch Concert Hall is avail-able for rent to the public for music-related con-certs and events, rehearsals, and sound recording. Renovated in 2014, the concert hall is wheelchair accessible and opens onto the courtyard of an Ital-ianate Victorian house dating back to the 1870s. There is a balcony at the rear of the hall, where there is also a sound recording booth. The audito-rium seats roughly 130.

For benefit concerts for other organizations, CMC must receive written confirmation of beneficiary. Admission fees over $15 must be approved by CMC’s Executive Director.

Q: Can I register online?A: Yes! Students can now make a private lesson request online. A registrar will respond to private lesson requests within 4-6 business days (response time may be longer during busy times). Students may also register for most group classes online.

Q: Do I need a registration appointment?A: New private lesson students need to make an appointment with the registrar to enroll. Dur-ing new student registration, make an appoint-ment by clicking on the “Register” tab and fill-ing out the “Registration Appointment Form,” or by calling the branch at which you’d like to study. Note that all lessons and classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Online regis-tration is available, and appointments are not necessary to register for most group classes.

Q: Can I still sign up for lessons or classes after a quarter has begun?A: Yes. You may sign up through the 8th or 9th week of each quarter (5th week of the Sum-mer Quarter). CMC charges from the week a stu-dent begins to the end of the current quarter.

Q: Is it necessary to sign up for all 12 weeks (8 weeks in Summer session) of the quarter?A: We ask that students sign up for the entire quar-ter, or the remainder of the quarter if it has already begun.

Q: How do I apply for financial aid?A: You must show proof of the family’s monthly net (after tax) income. If you are self-employed, you may submit bank statements and your tax return from the previous year. The sliding-scale discount is based household monthly net income. It will will be applied on the date your information is ap-proved. Applications are available at both branch-es, and online: sfcmc.org/register/financial-aid

Q: Can I apply for a full scholarship?A: Any student currently a junior in high school or younger can apply for a full scholarship if the family is receiving a CMC sliding scale discount. Students applying for a scholarship should have at least one year of study at CMC and the recommen-dation of their current CMC teacher. Auditions are held each May.

Q: What if I miss a lesson?A: There is no credit, reimbursement or make-up for missed lessons. It is a courtesy to inform your teach-er if you plan to miss a lesson and it is at the dis-cretion of the teacher to provide a make-up lesson.

Q: What if I get sick and miss a lesson?A: Teachers are not required to make up a missed lesson due to a student’s absence. A leave of ab-sence may be granted by the teacher (with regis-trar’s approval) in cases of serious illness or injury.

Q: What if I am not happy with my class?A: Registrars can work with you to find a more ap-propriate class or teacher for you. You may drop the class after the first lesson, however notice must be given to the registrar at least 24 hours be-fore the second week’s class in order to receive a reimbursement for the remaining lessons. You will then be charged only for the first lesson (and the registration fee, if applicable).

Q: Are parents allowed to stay in the room where the class is held?A: Parents can attend their child’s private lessons with faculty approval, and they are welcome to at-tend the first meeting of a group class. Q: Will I have the chance to perform for an audience?A: We welcome all students to sign up for student recitals, which are scheduled on Sundays through-out the year. There are also performance work-shops hosted by faculty members. The instrument and the topic vary from quarter to quarter.

Q: Is CMC wheelchair accessible?A: The Concert Hall at CMC’s Mission District Branch is wheelchair accessible and the Richmond District Branch is wheelchair accessible.

Work-study: Work exchange for course credit is available for students over 18. Continuing students are preferred and availability is limited.

Free classes: The Children’s Chorus (see page 5) is tuition-free, CMC’s Teen Jazz Orchestra (see page 7) and Older Adult Choirs (see page 22) completely fee-free.

Senior discount:* Seniors (age 65+) can apply for a sliding scale discount. Seniors who do not qualify for the sliding scale discount will receive a 30% discount instead.

Household discount: Each additional person from the same household enrolling in private lessons or group classes will be given a discount of $3.00 per lesson or class. This discount applies to full-fee students only.

Merit scholarships for youth: A limited number of full scholarships for private les-sons are awarded to students age 18 and un-der based on financial need and merit (see page 36). Juried auditions are held each May. Comprehensive youth scholarship pro-grams: Other scholarship programs include CMC’s Young Musicianship Program and Mission District Young Musicians Program (see page 8).

Discount instrument rental: Because most students need access to their own instruments, CMC offers some discount instrument rentals. A quarterly rental fee of $35 or $50 (depending on the instrument) and a $25 refundable deposit is due at the time of rental. Instruments must be returned at the quarter’s end unless students confirm with the registrar that they are planning to continue the following quarter. If a rental in-strument is not returned within seven days of its due date, renters will not be able to register for classes at CMC or take advantage of any CMC programs. Contact the registrar at the Mission District Branch for more information.

Registration PoliciesNew student registration: Call the registrar at the branch through which you wish to study to make a registration appointment or begin online at www.sfcmc.org.

Purpose of registration: Registration is for sched-uling and payment purposes only; the student’s first meeting with the faculty member will take place at the first lesson or class.

Current student registration: Current stu-dents are automatically enrolled for the follow-ing quarter unless they notify the Registrar with a change or drop request. Students receive an invoice for a $25.00/student deposit to secure their lesson/class times and will be dropped by the deadline if the deposit is not paid.

Late registration: Individuals unable to register during new or current student registration should contact the registrar at the branch where they wish to study. Late registration is pro-rated and on a space-available basis.

Payments: Full payment is due at registration. We accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Ex-press and Discover. If payment is not made, student will be dropped immediately. In case of financial hardship, one half of the payment due may be paid at registration, with the balance due by the fifth les-son or class (third for Summer Quarter). There is a $15 check return fee.

Attendance policy: Regular and punctual atten-dance is one of the best investments students can make in their musical education. It is essential to progress, enjoyment and the high quality music at the heart of CMC’s mission. While some absences may be unavoidable, the accumulation of three or more absences in a given quarter may result in the evaluation of a student’s commitment to future study at CMC. Communication about attendance is also an essential part of the teacher-student re-lationship. If a student is not going to be able to attend a lesson, he or she must notify the teacher or the front office. Teachers are not required to make up student absences. On occasion, however, with

proper notification a makeup lesson may be ar-ranged.

Missed lessons: Students pay tuition regardless of their attendance. Students must notify the registrar before any absence, but this does not exempt the student from payment. Faculty members are not required to make up missed lessons caused by stu-dent absences. Faculty members may make up les-sons caused by faculty member absences, or a credit will be applied to the student’s account.

Student illness guidelines: While we encourage students to attend all of their lessons, classes, and ensembles, an ill child or adult will not perform well and may expose others to communicable illnesses. If a child is sneezing, coughing and/or sick enough to stay at home from school, please do not send your child to music lessons. Having sick children at CMC creates a hardship for faculty, staff and the community.

Leaves of absence: In cases of serious illness or injury, a leave of absence may be arranged. Prior ap-proval of both the faculty member and registrar is required. If approved, credit may be given for two or more consecutive absences.

Discontinuation: CMC reserves the right to dis-continue a student’s enrollment at any time for rea-sons including, but not limited to: poor attendance, non-payment of fees, lack of interest, or disruptive behavior. If a student is dropped for non-payment of fees, the student might be able to continue the quarter by paying the unpaid balance.

Refunds: Tuition refunds are given when lessons or classes are canceled by CMC. A refund, minus the first lesson or class cost plus registration fees, may also be given if the student decides not to con-tinue after the first lesson or class and notifies the Registrar at least 24 hours prior to the second les-son. If the registrar is not notified at least 24 hours in advance, the student is responsible for the full quarter’s tuition. $100 per week of camp tuition is non-refundable: the remainder is refundable only until the cancellation deadline (see camp program information on pages 11-12).

Photo and video release policy: CMC occasion-ally photographs or videotapes students for its print and online publications. Compensation will not be provided to these individuals. See photo and video release statement on CMC’s registration form.
