Welcome to 2013! I am really looking forward to all the wonderful things the Down Syndrome Association of South Texas has in store for the next year!
As we close 2012, I need to reflect on what a great year it was for not only the DSASTX, but for the Down syndrome community, as well. The DSASTX added so many new families, and we are now serving over 900 families with almost 5,000 contacts in our database. More and more people in our community are finding out about the DSASTX, and we love that we can let everyone know the great things we can do and how wonderful our kids are.
We have added a new Spanish support group meeting, which meets every other month. If you or someone you know wants information on the Spanish support group meetings, please contact us so we can make note in our database.
All the events we held in 2012, from the monthly social activities to the Buddy Walk to the Holiday Party, were so well attended that we know we are making an impact. Over 4,500 people attended the Buddy Walk, and we raised over $163,000. The Holiday Party had over 800 people in attendance.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people for their hard work at the Holiday Party:

Teen Club Adult Matters!The Teen Club is open to all teens with any disability between the ages of 13 and 17. The goal of the Teen Club is to foster friendships, stimulate socialization, and increase positive self esteem. Chaperones will be in attendance at each event. Adult Matters! is a social program specifically designed for adults with special needs ages 18 and older. The focus is on providing an environment to help them further develop their social skills, build friendships among other adults with special needs, and offer them safe and appropriate interactions within the community. In order to foster that environment, we encourage them to invite an age-appropriate peer (another adult with special needs) to participate with them. Meet PersayusI am so excited and honored to introduce Persayus Adrianny Witherspoon to everyone. I still remember the very day that I was made aware that the baby girl I was having would have Down syndrome. I was 12 weeks pregnant and got the call with test results. Like many others, the phone fell from my hands and my heart hit the floor as the fear of the unknown gripped me. Little did I know she would be a miracle we needed in our lives for all time. Persayus was born July 28, 2011 to me (Alexandria) and Matthew Witherspoon. The glow in her eyes and the pure innocence in her soul were felt from the very first moment we held her. Since that day of wonder, the love and need for her in our lives grew stronger every moment as we watched her battle�and�overcome�3�long�months�in�the�NICU�due�to�feeding�issues, off and on illness, and her congenital heart defect. She fought hard to come home where she belonged, only to have to go back after 2 months for her open heart surgery, once again showing us the miracle that she was destined to be.
Today, Persayus is now 17 months old and, just like any other baby girl, loves to play, laugh, and show off. I wish the whole world could see her dance and play! She is a combination of smart, sassy, and sweet all wrapped up into one precious little person. Every goal she accomplishes and every milestone she meets makes us so very proud. Watching her steal the hearts of everyone who meets her with her beautifully amazing smile, her dressing up, and her big bows is the miracle we are so very blessed to have and experience every day. She continues to show us through her happiness, strength, and joy that nothing in life should ever be taken for granted.
It wasn’t easy to make that first phone call and reach out for support and guidance from the Down Syndrome Association, but I did it. I truly believe that the open arms, the love, the family, and the friends we have gained in our lives from making one simple phone call has helped us get through what, in the beginning, was fear. We gained a whole new family that we can never live without. There are so many stories, people, and babies who have touched our lives and captured our hearts; in return, we are here to share Persayus’ story and to help, love, and support anyone who may need us. Whether that is through offering friendship, being a parent-to-parent mentor, or giving a simple hug, we are here to love and support those who need us. So, if you need a hug or a kiss, just find us, but be warned, Persayus’ kisses are licks, and her hugs are the best medicine! Welcome to our miracle – her name is Persayus, and she is our world.

D.A.D.S.Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome, or D.A.D.S., is a committee or community group (within a local Down syndrome support organization) of fathers of children who happen to have Down syndrome. We hesitate to call ourself a “support group”, even though we do, in many ways, support each other.
We invite expert speakers to discuss medical, educational, financial, social, and any other issues that affect our children’s lives. And of course, we share stories and experiences that are unique to fathers of children with Down syndrome.

Fiesta Especial2013 Fiesta Especial Royal Court Gabriela Martinez, age 10, will represent the Down Syndrome Association as Page on the 2013 Fiesta Especial® Royal Court.October 19, 2002 was the day that Gabriela made her grand entrance into the world. With her spirited personality, it was not long before this beautiful child struck a chord in the heartstrings of many. Gabriela, now 10 years old, is truly a happy-go-lucky kid.
Her love of music knows no limits and she takes great joy in dancing to all the latest and greatest hit songs. She loves the outdoors very much and enjoys such hobbies as bike riding, trampoline jumping and playing on her swing set. If you ask Gabriela about her friends, she’ll eagerly tell you about them, and she will be quick to tell you that her Grandpa is her best friend. You can usually find the two of them getting into some sort of trouble together. Gabriela is a unique and determined individual. With her happy, unwavering personality, she strives to be as independent as possible and is determined to leave her mark on the world.

The DSASTX is a participant in Birdies for Charity. Birdies for Charity is a fundraising program designed by Golf San Antonio to give participating organizations the opportunity to generate contributions through the Valero Texas Open. Birdies for Charity is a no-cost program that gives 100% of the funds raised back to the participating organization. Funds are generated by soliciting pledges from individuals and corporations.
Birdies for Charity is like a walk-a-thon, but instead of donating per mile, participants make a pledge for every birdie made at the Valero Texas Open. The 2012 Valero Texas Open had 2,022 birdies made, so a pledge of $0.01 yielded a donation of $20.22. Last year, the DSASTX raised over $6,000 through Birdies for Charity!
Donors also have the ability to make a one-time donation and flexibility to pay in advance or be billed after the tournament. Donations are accepted from anywhere around the world and are tax deductible.

A disability does not automatically mean that an individual needs a guardian. During this workshop, you will learn whether your child or other family member should have a guardian and how to obtain guardianship. LLQ USA is a 501(c) 3 which was formed solely for improving the lives of children with Down syndrome. The name, LLQ USA, is an acronym for Living, Learning, eQuipping Children with Down syndrome for full inclusive lives.
The mission of LLQ is to bring a reading and language teaching intervention (RLI) to the United States education system which was recently developed and evaluated in a large randomized controlled trial in the United Kingdom by researchers at Down Syndrome Education (DSE) and the University of York. This was a landmark study, and the research findings from the UK have recently been published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. The results of the study can be summarized as follows:
� •��After�only�20�weeks,�children�with�Down�syndrome�taught�using�the program had made substantially more progress than those receiving typical classroom Literacy instruction (which included 1:1 support)
� •��On�average,�the�children�using�the�program�gained�4.5�words�on�a standardized reading measure in 20 weeks – more than twice as many as those not using the program (this measure is equal to a typically developing child’s progress)
� •��Although�only�60%�of�children�with�Down�syndrome�were�able�to score on a standardized reading test at start of the study, 90% could score after receiving the intervention – 50% more children
� •��By�the�end�of�the�study,�1�in�5�children�with�Down�syndrome�had�achieved word reading skills as good as typically developing children
This study demonstrates that the reading skills of children with Down syndrome can be dramatically improved in a short period of time with more effective teaching techniques.
The RLI pilot study to convert the work done in the UK to the USA education system is being conducted in San Antonio, Texas in a small random trial at 10�schools�in�the�North�East�Independent�School�District�(NEISD),�Carnahan�Elementary�and�New�Braunfels�Christian�Academy campuses which began in August, 2012, and will be completed in July, 2013. Dr. Kelly Burgoyne, PhD, and Dr. Sue Buckley, PhD who co-managed the trial in the UK, will be collaborating on this pilot with Dr. Judith Moening,�Director�of�Special�Education�at�NEISD,�and�her�team.
This pilot study will be a landmark in the United States, as there is no known evidence-based reading intervention in place in the US education system that is geared specifically towards children with Down syndrome. The program is theoretically-motivated, and based on principles of best practice adapted for the learning profile of children with Down syndrome. It is designed for children with Down syndrome between the ages of 5 to 11.
The response from the teachers, staff and administrators during the training for the intervention was very well received. The district staff that participated in the training were asking questions if the teaching methods could be done with other disabilities as well. The basic fundamentals of literacy used in the intervention are the same used to teach any child to read. Dr. Sue Buckley was asked to lead a Region 13 training in the Austin ESC training center where an additional 30 schools have committed to roll out the intervention methods in their classrooms as well. These schools will not be published in the research trial. In whole, the RLI training was very well respected by the educators�who�attended.�Region�13�and�NEISD�staff�are�collaborating�on plans to roll out the evidence-based intervention to more of their campuses with a training effort being discussed by the end of the school year. Dr. Buckley and her team are discussing a “train the trainer program” to possibly being implemented at the end of the 2013 Academic school year as the RLI pilot is completed in San Antonio.
Dr. Sue Buckley, while in the US in January met with Gene Lenz from the Texas Education Agency and members of his staff in Austin and discussed a possible introduction to all 20 region service centers in the state of Texas to introduce this evidence based reading strategy to the schools across Texas. This effort would be done in a teleconference structure streamed by meetings that occur with the regions once a month. Discussions to this roll out are currently being had by the administration and Dr. Buckley’s team.
LLQ team members have met with Paul Watson and Vicki Mitchell from the Texas Special Education Continuing Advisory Committee for TEA (TSpECAC). This collaboration is in hopes to have the committee recommend the RLI program, bring some bi partisan support to the project establishing a bill to teach children to read using this evidence based strategy in all Texas Public schools, and secure possible funding to assist with the training support needed to the ESC regions across Texas.
Dr.�Buckley,�LLQ�staff,�and�NEISD�officials�met�with�Chief�Justice�Wallace Jefferson and a representative from Gov. Perry’s office on disabilities to discuss possible support venues for the literacy project during her two week visit to the US.
Dr. Terry Allor, an education department head for Southern Methodist University was also collaborated with regarding a recent literacy research project with children with a wide range of intellectual disabilities. This study was conducted over a three year period in Dallas Texas and many of the same intervention methods were used. A collaboration effort was discussed with SMU and Dr. Buckley’s Team (DSE) to further advance these literacy interventions for special needs children thru the Texas education system.
